Monday, November 4th. Jessica and Sara liked being prepared. Thanksgiving was coming up, and they wanted to be ready… to procrastinate.
Okay, just because she was buying brown sugar and canned pineapples, doesn't mean her and Sara needed to make the ham right away. Thanksgiving was weeks away, and their parents were making the turkey as usual. The sisters loved spending time with their parents but they weren't quite ready to host yet. Bringing a baked ham was the least they could do.
With her on her trip to the store was one Jaune Arc, straight from Remnant. She'd taken to showing him around the planet and showing him things that were so intrinsic to Earth's everyday life. It was like seeing the world through his eyes. She wasn't sure what would be different about food shopping compared to Remnant, but he insisted on going with her.
"You know you didn't have to come with, right?" she asked. "I'm just getting groceries."
"I know, but I wanted to. I want to spend as much time with you as I can." Jaune said earnestly. He smiled and looked down to meet her gaze. He moved himself closer and took her hand in his.
Jessica had previously felt chilly as the fall season was upon Oregon, but now her face was burning. He was so effortlessly sweet at times. She leaned closer to him, pressing her cheek against his arm.
"How did I get lucky enough to meet you?" she asked.
Jaune let out a small laugh. "I should be asking that."
They passed the threshold into the store, happily welcoming the warmth of the building's heating. Jaune stood in awe of how massive the place was. Sure, there were probably huge supermarkets like this on Remnant too, but he wasn't from any of the big cities in the kingdoms. At best, he was probably a country kid like Oscar from a small rural town outside Vale (the kingdom, not the city). Heck, his hometown probably wasn't big enough to qualify as a town.
And it wasn't like being a full-time student – and then a full-time traveler with Team RNJR – afforded many opportunities to visit stores like this. Not even in Atlas, where he arguably had the most free time, did he have to shop for groceries in a place like this. Mostly he trained or took on missions. And as much as he didn't like thinking about the Ever After, the markets there only reminded him of the shopping trips he took with his family to the weekly farmer's market in town.
Jessica saw the wonder on Jaune's face and smiled. Choosing to pursue this relationship with Jaune was one of the best decisions she had ever made. "Well, my sister asked me to pick up some stuff for Thanksg–"
Suddenly, Jessica heard it. That familiar chime of a xylophone, playing that unforgettable melody ingrained into everyone's heads. The sound of the Holiday season itself. She froze in her tracks, eyes widening. "… Oh, no."
Seeing the expression on her face, Jaune worriedly called her name. "Jessica? What's wrong?"
I ~ ~
There it was. The first word of the song rang out in the store as the voice turned it into a riff. "It's begun… She's returned."
Jaune, who had no clue what Jessica was talking about, frantically checked their surroundings, scanning for danger. "Who?"
Jessica sighed. She had been careless. "I forgot what time of year it was. Now it'll be stuck in your head."
"What?" Jaune's eyebrows knit together. He hadn't spotted anything to indicate danger, and the only thing he could hear was the music playing over the speakers.
"The song?" he asked her.
"Not just any music…" Jessica continued dramatically. "It's one of the catchiest songs ever written, synonymous with the season itself." She waved her arm in a flourish to present the various decorations for the next holiday. As she spoke, the song continued lyrics sung beautifully, acting as a call to action for all things Christmas, accompanied by brass bells and cymbals. And just like that, November went ignored once again.
Jaune, however, had no idea what was going on, or what she was talking about. "… Uh… What?"
Jessica, now disappointed in herself for not remembering such an obvious pitfall, began explaining. "Your brain isn't prepared for all of Earth's customs yet. You haven't learned to make this song into background noise." She hoped Jaune knew he had her full sympathy. She gently patted his shoulder, knowing this song would infect him. "I'm sorry, but this song will be stuck in your head for weeks, now."
As if on cue, the song's intro finished, and the distinctive piano melody began. Jaune, amused by Jessica's antics, chuckled at this satiric act. "Okay, I don't know about that. It does sound really nice, I'll admit, but I think you might be a little overdramatic. It's just a song.
And, cue the drums.
(It was, in fact, NOT just a song.)
ONE WEEK LATER
Jaune was back on Remnant. The back-and-forth trips to Earth could be a bit of a hassle at times, but in his eyes, it was all worth it to see Jessica again. He didn't think he had done much in the simulation they met in, but he tried his best to help her. Apparently, that was enough for both of them to feel a connection forming.
He reminisced on all Jessica had shown him. How big Earth was compared to Remnant will always amaze him. So many different people, places, and even things like music. He couldn't wait for the next thing she would show him.
As he was packing a bag, he happily hummed a tune that made him think of her. Wait… what was he humming?
He stopped altogether, replaying the song in his head. Where did that come from? Where had he heard… Oh. Jessica was right all along, he realized. It really would be stuck in his head for a while.
