Chapter 7: A Fresh Start
Rin spent the night tossing and turning, her mind occupied with Kakashi's cryptic comment about Naruto being "special" to her. The question gnawed at her, blending with thoughts of the teasing earlier that evening. Adding to her restless night was Shizune's sleep talking. Sharing the hotel room meant Rin had to endure Shizune mumbling Naruto's name occasionally, along with comments about his "strong back." Rin sighed, filing it all away for later and wondering what exactly was going on in her teammate's mind.
Morning came, and Rin was already up and dressed when Shizune groaned from her futon. "Rin…" she murmured, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. "I'm so sore. Do you think Naruto could… you know, help me again?"
Rin smirked faintly, raising an eyebrow. "You want me to call him so he can carry you again?"
Shizune flushed slightly, but nodded. "I can barely move, and we can't keep Tsunade-sensei waiting."
Rin relented and left to fetch Naruto. Moments later, after Shizune managed to get dressed in her sleek black kimono, Naruto arrived, full of energy as always.
"Alright, Shizune!" Naruto exclaimed, kneeling down so she could climb onto his back. "Hop on!"
Shizune did so, albeit with a slight blush, while Rin followed behind them, observing the dynamic between the two. She noticed how effortlessly Naruto carried Shizune and how comfortable Shizune seemed, even joking lightly with him as they made their way to the training grounds. Rin couldn't help but feel a twinge of curiosity about the bond forming between the three of them.
When they arrived at the training grounds, Tsunade was waiting for them, arms crossed and a knowing smirk on her face as she watched Naruto set Shizune down. "Comfortable, Shizune?" she teased, her tone light but laced with amusement.
Shizune flushed and waved her hands defensively. "I couldn't walk properly, Tsunade-sensei! It's not what it looks like!"
Tsunade chuckled and shook her head before addressing the whole team. "Alright, listen up. You've all been working hard, and I can see some progress already. But now, it's time for something different."
Naruto tilted his head in confusion. "Different? Like what?"
Tsunade's smirk widened. "A new look. You're not just individuals anymore; you're Team Tsunade. You need something that shows you're part of something special, something that makes people take notice."
Rin exchanged a glance with Shizune, who was equally intrigued. "What do you mean by 'new look,' sensei?" Rin asked.
"Clothing, gear, a symbol—something unique that marks you as a team," Tsunade explained. "It doesn't have to be flashy, but it needs to mean something. I want people to look at you and know you're not just another group of shinobi."
Naruto grinned, his excitement growing. "So, like a team uniform or something? That sounds awesome!"
Shizune, still trying to stand fully upright, looked thoughtful. "Something that ties us together… I like the idea."
Tsunade nodded. "Good. You've got until the end of the day to come up with something. I want you three to work together on this—it's an exercise in teamwork as much as anything else."
As the team began brainstorming ideas, Tsunade watched them with a hint of pride. This was more than just a cosmetic change. It was a step toward forging their identity as a unit, something she knew they would need in the challenges to come.
As Team Tsunade sat together discussing what their team symbol should be, they tried to find something that truly represented them. Shizune suggested something related to medical ninjutsu since they were all training under Tsunade. However, Rin pointed out that Naruto wasn't a medic, aside from constantly needing healing.
"If we base it on Naruto," Rin mused, "it could represent how he brought us together into this new era."
Shizune frowned slightly. "That might give people the wrong idea—like we belong to Naruto instead of training under Tsunade."
Naruto, who had been quietly listening, turned to Tsunade with a curious expression. "Sensei, do you have something unique to you? Like a special technique or mark that represents who you are?"
Tsunade raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the question. "Well, I do have a technique that leaves a unique seal-like pattern on my skin when I use it," she admitted.
Naruto's face lit up. "That sounds perfect! We could use that as our team symbol. It's something only you have, and it represents strength, healing, and pushing past limits—just like your training."
Tsunade smirked, crossing her arms. "Not bad, brat. You might actually be onto something." She glanced at Shizune and Rin. "What do you two think?"
Shizune tilted her head in thought. "It is unique, and it represents resilience and healing. Plus, it avoids any awkward misunderstandings about our team dynamic."
Rin smiled. "I like it. It's subtle, but it still means something important."
Tsunade nodded in approval. "Alright then, looks like we have our team symbol."
As Team Tsunade strolled through the village, the mood was light and relaxed. Rin walked up front with Naruto, chatting about anything and everything—training ideas, favorite foods, even funny stories from their childhoods. Naruto, as always, was full of energy, his enthusiasm making Rin laugh more than once.
Meanwhile, Tsunade stayed toward the back with Shizune, who was doing her best to walk normally despite her sore muscles. The last thing she wanted was to show any weakness in front of her mentor. More importantly, she absolutely refused to let Naruto carry her again, not with Tsunade watching.
But Tsunade had seen everything that morning. She had been waiting for the perfect moment to bring it up, and now, strolling through the village without distractions, was exactly the right time.
"You know, Shizune," Tsunade began, her voice deceptively casual, "I don't think I've ever seen you let anyone carry you around like that before. You're usually too stubborn to accept help. Makes me wonder… just how comfortable are you getting with Naruto?"
Shizune stiffened instantly, her face turning pink as she shot a flustered glance at Tsunade. "I-I was exhausted! He offered! It would've been rude to say no!"
Tsunade smirked. "Oh, of course, of course. And you just happened to fall asleep on his back? Snuggling in like he was your personal body pillow?"
Shizune groaned, covering her face with both hands. "You saw that?"
Tsunade let out a deep chuckle. "Oh, I definitely saw that. Honestly, I'm just surprised you didn't start drooling on him."
Shizune groaned even louder, shaking her head. "It wasn't like that!" she insisted, her voice bordering on pleading. "Naruto's just… warm, okay? And I was really tired."
Tsunade grinned. "Mmmhmm. That's what they all say."
Shizune sighed, rubbing her temples. "He's just my teammate, Tsunade-sama."
"Uh-huh," Tsunade said, drawing out the words teasingly. Then, as if to twist the knife just a little more, she added, "You know, if I didn't know better, I'd say you were getting a little too fond of the kid. First, you let him carry you. Then you fall asleep on him. Next thing I know, you'll be patching him up just because you want to hold his hand."
Shizune shot her mentor a sharp glare, her face now fully red. "I patch everyone up. I'm a medic!"
Tsunade laughed, clearly having too much fun. "Sure, sure. But I don't see you letting just anyone carry you around town."
Shizune huffed, crossing her arms, but Tsunade could see the way she was overthinking the situation now, her mind racing through the implications.
After a moment, Tsunade nudged her lightly. "Relax, I'm just messing with you." She softened her tone slightly. "But you do seem pretty comfortable with him. Maybe it's worth thinking about what that means."
Shizune frowned, not in annoyance, but in deep thought. Tsunade watched as her student mulled over her words, clearly torn between embarrassment and contemplation.
Satisfied that she had planted the seed, Tsunade smirked and walked ahead to join Naruto and Rin, leaving Shizune stewing in her thoughts.
Behind her, Shizune sighed to herself. "Great. Now I won't be able to stop thinking about this."
As Team Tsunade entered the ninja equipment store, Tsunade wasted no time making her presence known.
"HIGARASHI! I have a request for you!" she bellowed, striding confidently toward the back of the shop.
The response was immediate—a high-pitched, girlish scream followed by a thud, the unmistakable sound of someone either fainting or getting knocked to the floor.
Naruto, Rin, and Shizune exchanged glances but didn't react beyond that. They had seen Tsunade intimidate plenty of people before, and Higarashi's reaction was nothing new. With Tsunade handling business, the three took the opportunity to explore the shop on their own.
Rin wandered over to a section displaying various types of chakra pills, her curiosity piqued. She carefully examined each label, making mental notes of their different compositions. Her goal was to understand how each variant enhanced recovery and chakra reserves, and perhaps even reverse-engineer them for future use. If she could master the science behind them, she could create specialized pills that catered to their team's needs.
Shizune, meanwhile, drifted toward the clothing section, partially to escape Tsunade's earlier teasing. As she scanned through various outfits, her eyes landed on an elegant battle dress—sleek yet practical, designed for mobility while maintaining a refined look. The thought of wearing something like this on a mission intrigued her. It was a far cry from her usual shinobi attire, but it had its uses.
As she traced her fingers over the fabric, a familiar voice suddenly spoke up behind her.
"Whoa, that's really pretty!" Naruto commented, his tone full of admiration. "How do people even fight in something like that?"
Shizune tensed slightly, caught off guard. After everything Tsunade had teased her about that morning, she had hoped to have a moment of peace. Taking a deep breath to steady herself, she turned to Naruto and explained.
"Well, kunoichi sometimes wear things like this for specific missions," she said, gesturing toward the dress. "They can hide weapons, create distractions, or even make it easier to blend into high-society settings."
Naruto nodded along but still seemed puzzled. "But wouldn't it get in the way? Like, wouldn't all that extra fabric slow you down?"
Shizune smiled at his innocent confusion. "Not if it's designed well. Some outfits like this have hidden slits to allow for better movement. And besides, not every battle is won with brute force. Sometimes, being underestimated is an advantage."
Naruto folded his arms, considering her words. "Hmm… I guess that makes sense. So you'd use this for sneaky stuff, like infiltration?"
"Exactly," Shizune confirmed. Then, after a brief pause, she hesitantly added, "There's also… another method some kunoichi use. It's not about fighting at all, but rather persuasion."
Naruto tilted his head. "Persuasion? Like, talking your way out of a fight?"
Shizune hesitated. She wasn't sure how deep she wanted to go into this explanation. "Sort of. Some shinobi—especially kunoichi—use charm and attractiveness to get information or manipulate a target."
Naruto's eyes lit up in realization. "Ohhh, so like tricking people with kindness?"
Shizune exhaled in relief. "Something like that…"
Before she could change the subject, Naruto suddenly grinned and blurted out, "Well, I think you'd be really good at it!"
Shizune felt her entire body freeze. "W-What?!"
Naruto shrugged casually. "I mean, you're really pretty, so wouldn't that make it easier?"
Shizune's face turned scarlet. After enduring Tsunade's relentless teasing all morning, this was the final blow. She could barely form a response before quickly turning on her heel and walking away—fast.
"Uh… Shizune?" Naruto called after her, completely confused. "Did I say something weird?"
Rin, who had just walked over with a small box of chakra pills in hand, witnessed the scene unfold. Seeing Shizune's flustered retreat, she let out a small laugh.
"You really have no idea, do you?" Rin mused, shaking her head.
Naruto blinked at her. "No idea about what?"
Rin only patted his shoulder before walking off, leaving Naruto standing there, still utterly lost on what had just happened.
