Months had passed since the trial, since the verdict, since everything had changed. The weight of the past year still pressed heavily on Kate's chest, but today—today was different. Today, she was granted a rare moment of peace, a brief reprieve from the chaos of her life.
It was Theo's first birthday.
A family visit in the conjugal room—small, a little cramped, and about as far from ideal as one could get—but it was a room she could share with her family. And for a few hours, she could pretend that the world outside didn't exist. She was allowed this time with her father, her son, Martha and Alexis. She knew this moment was the result of countless favours being pulled by those who still cared about her, but for now, she wasn't questioning it. She was just grateful. Grateful for the chance to see them, to hold them, to be with them again.
The guards escorted her down the hall, the familiar clicking of their boots on the concrete floor echoing in the sterile silence. When they reached the door, they uncuffed her with a practiced motion, and opened it for her. The door creaked as it swung wide, revealing a small, rectangular room that had been converted into a makeshift living space. A single daybed, a small table, and a bathroom separated by a thin curtain.
But it wasn't the room that caught her attention—it was the faces inside.
Ryan and Esposito stood near the door, waiting for her. She froze for a second, blinking in disbelief. The sight of them, standing there, their grins wide and familiar, brought a lump to her throat. They were the last people she expected to see today, and their presence felt like a piece of home that she didn't realize she had missed so much.
Before she could say anything, they were on her, wrapping her up in a big, comforting bear hug, their arms engulfing her. She gasped in surprise, overwhelmed by the warmth of their embrace, the unexpected tenderness of their touch. It was a welcome she hadn't realized she needed until this very moment.
"Beckett!" Esposito said, his voice thick with emotion. "You look... damn, you look like you've been through hell, but still..."
She laughed softly, despite herself, a tear slipping down her cheek as she pulled back to look at them. Her eyes lingered on Esposito's face, then Ryan's, the familiar warmth of their friendship slowly knitting her back together.
"You guys—how—" Kate started, but Ryan cut her off, his grin widening.
"We've got a surprise for you," he said, his voice full of mischief. "We worked our asses off for this. We pulled a lot of strings. You deserve it, Kate."
Ryan knocked softly on the bathroom door.
The sound of footsteps, light and hesitant, followed. The door creaked open.
And then, there he was.
Castle.
Kate's breath caught in her throat. She hadn't prepared herself for this moment—not like this. The sight of him standing there, looking every bit like the man she had missed so desperately, tore through her, breaking something deep inside her. Her hand flew to her mouth to stifle the sound of the sob that escaped, but it was too late.
Tears spilled down her cheeks, her chest heaving with a mix of laughter and sobs. She couldn't believe it—she couldn't believe that after all this time, after all the pain and separation, he was standing right there in front of her.
She couldn't move for a few seconds. It was like her body couldn't quite process what her eyes were seeing.
Then, Castle was there, in front of her, pulling her into his arms, his hands cupping her face as he kissed the top of her head. His embrace felt like everything she had been missing. Everything.
"I missed you so much," he whispered into her hair, his voice thick with emotion.
Her arms wound around his neck as if she couldn't bear to let go. "How did you—how did this happen?"
Castle pulled back slightly, his face soft with that familiar, endearing grin.
"Let's just say we owe a lot of people a lot of favours," Esposito said, glancing at Ryan.
"And we had a little help from Gates," Ryan added.
"I told you she liked me," Castle teased, trying to lighten the moment.
Kate looked back at him, shaking her head, her lips curling into a smile despite the tears still streaming down her face. She could hardly believe it. "You guys… you really did this for me?"
Ryan and Esposito, obviously uncomfortable with the intimacy of the moment, exchanged glances. "We'll, uh, give you guys a minute," Esposito said, his voice softening. "But, we'll be right outside."
The door clicked shut behind them, leaving Kate and Castle alone in the small room. She took a shaky breath, still processing the reality of him being here, with her, finally.
She looked into his eyes, searching his face for any sign of the man she had missed for so long. His gaze was steady, filled with love, longing, and a quiet sadness that mirrored her own. His hands were gentle on her, tracing the lines of her face as though he couldn't quite believe she was real either.
"I've missed you so much," he said again, his voice raw.
She nodded, unable to say anything, because she knew he felt it too. She didn't need to speak—it was all there, in the way they looked at each other. She stepped closer, her heart pounding in her chest. The nerves that had been coiled tight in her stomach since he walked in now swirled like a storm. She had dreamed of this moment for so long, of holding him again, and now that it was here, she didn't know how to let go.
Her lips found his—soft at first, tentative, but that hesitation melted quickly as she pressed herself closer, deepening the kiss. The years of longing, of separation, came crashing through her. Her hands slid into his hair, pulling him closer, feeling his warmth flood through her.
Castle's hands slid beneath her shirt, his palms warm against her skin, making her shiver with the sensation. His fingers trailed over the soft curves of her body, and Kate's breath hitched as she lifted her shirt over her head, eager to feel more of him, to close the space between them.
As his hands roamed, she felt the familiar brush of his fingertips over the scars on her body—the marks that had become part of her story, part of who she was. But there were new things, too, subtle changes that had come with the passage of time. The stretch marks on her abdomen were a bittersweet reminder of the life they had lost, and the life they had gained. Castle paused, his gaze softening as he looked at them, his thumb brushing gently over the marks as if memorizing them.
"You're beautiful," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
Kate's eyes flickered to his, catching the glimmer of tears in his eyes too. She had missed him more than she could express, and in this moment, she could feel him as much as she could see him. She was alive again. Alive in a way she hadn't felt in so long.
They held each other close, both breathing heavily, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Kate allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, they could survive this. Together.
She and Castle had showered and changed into civilian clothes that Ryan and Esposito had thoughtfully brought for them—clothes that felt like a small taste of normalcy. The clothes were a stark contrast to the ones Kate had worn for months, but more importantly, they made her feel human again. For the first time in so long, she felt like herself—like a woman, not just a prisoner.
Castle was in a crisp, dark button-down shirt that hugged his frame in all the right ways, his hair still damp but tousled in that way she loved. He looked so good, so effortlessly him, and she caught herself stealing glances at him when she thought he wouldn't notice.
Her own clothes, soft and comfortable, were the kind of thing she'd wear on a lazy weekend with him, and the familiar fabric against her skin gave her a sense of peace. They both had their arms around each other as they watched the clock tick toward the moment when their family would arrive. Every second felt like a gift, and neither of them wanted to squander it.
Then, the door swung open, and Alexis, Martha, and Jim entered, Theo nestled against them. The scene was both surreal and beautiful—her family, the people she loved more than anything, all gathered together under one roof, even if it wasn't the roof she had imagined.
Alexis smiled at her, her eyes soft and understanding, as she passed Theo into Kate's arms. For a moment, all Kate could do was hold him, feeling the steady thrum of his tiny heartbeat against her chest. Theo was still a little fussy—his face scrunched as if he were considering whether or not to let out a wail—but when Kate gently rocked him, the tension in his small body eased. His little hand reached up and grasped her finger, and Kate's heart cracked wide open.
Castle stood behind her, watching her with the same adoration and awe. "I can't believe he's so big now," he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "I feel like I've missed everything."
Kate leaned into him, grateful for the closeness, the support. "We have," she whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "But we're here now."
Jim, quiet but ever-present, leaned in and gave Castle a firm hug, the kind of hug men give when words don't quite seem to cover the depth of their feelings. "You're a good man, Rick," he said gruffly, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm proud of you."
Castle smiled, the words catching him by surprise, but he nodded in understanding. Jim's approval meant the world to him.
And then, the tiny birthday party began.
Theo, of course, wasn't exactly old enough to understand what was going on, but the way his little face lit up when they handed him a birthday cupcake was enough to make everyone laugh. Kate had to fight the urge to laugh through her tears as she gently smeared a bit of frosting on his cheek, watching as he squirmed at the sticky feeling but also reached out for more.
Alexis laughed, eyes twinkling. "He's going to need a bath after this."
Castle leaned in, his hand slipped around Kate's waist, and for a moment, she leaned into him, feeling the comforting warmth of his body behind hers.
Martha stepped forward, a camera in her hands. "Alright, family picture time!" she announced, directing them to gather together. Kate found herself in the centre of the group, Castle beside her and Theo in her arms, surrounded by the people she loved most. Jim, Martha, Alexis, Ryan, and Esposito all stood close, and for a moment, the world outside seemed to disappear.
Kate held Theo close, Castle's arm wrapped around her, their little family complete, even if only for a brief, stolen moment. They smiled for the camera, capturing a moment of peace that felt like everything they had worked for—everything they had fought for—had finally come together.
And for once, as they all smiled and laughed, Kate let herself believe in something bigger than the darkness she had been living in for so long. She believed in this. In them. In the future.
She smiled through her tears, the warmth of her family surrounding her like a shield. She had them. And that, in itself, was enough.
For now, it was enough.
