Chapter fourteen
(Rin's POV)
After lunch I decided it was time for me to go home. My uncle had surly heard by now that I had left school and was probably waiting for me to get home so he could grill me. Sure enough no sooner had I finished telling Sesshomaru that I needed to go home that my cell chirped telling me that I had a text. I opened the message knowing Sess was reading it over my shoulder. As I read it I knew whoever had called my uncle had failed to tell him why I left or even part of the story. It seemed that all he was told was that I had left with Sesshomaru before third period. I glanced up at Sess.
"Come on. I'll take you home." Was all he said.
As we got up to go I caught a worried look on Inutaisho's face, but when I looked over at him it was gone. So I shrugged it off and walked out with Sess. Once we were in the car and heading toward my place Sess reached over and grabbed my hand. He didn't say anything and he didn't look at me just held my hand until we pulled up outside my house. Then he looked over at me, we just sat there a moment not saying a word just looking at each other.
I knew my aunt and uncle were waiting for me inside, but I didn't care. Sesshomaru wasn't ready for me to get out of the car. Was in fact not ready for me to be out of his sight, and the only reason he was letting me was for my family. He knew I had to tell them what was going on. Still I knew he needed me, so I leaned over and softly kissed his lips.
"If you need me just call me or come over. I'm sure once I tell them what is going on they will understand." I whispered softly stroking his cheek with my thumb.
Taking a deep breath he closed his eyes and leaned into my touch. When he opened them again I could still see the unease but he had calmed a bit. I smiled and kissed him once more before I climbed out of the car. He didn't start it until I was inside with the door closed. With a sigh I turned and started down the bright sunny hallway toward the living room. No more the five steps later my uncle stepped out of the living room. It was easy to tell that he was mad from the look on his handsome face and the stiff way he was holding his body.
"What is this I heard about you leaving school with Sesshomaru this morning? It's already almost one o'clock and you didn't so much as text anyone to let them know where you were!" His voice was stern and clipped I knew right away just how pissed he was.
Before I could even begin to explain Sara walked up to her husband and placed one delicate hand one his crossed arms.
"Let's all go sit in the living room and let her explain dear." Though she spoke softly and without anger I could tell she was just as angry with me. Sighing I looked at the ground and slowly followed them back into the living room. After everyone was sitting, me in one of the recliners and them on the sofa, I looked up to meet my uncle's gaze once more. Then as clearly as I could I told them what had happed and where I had gone. Explaining I had fallen asleep and that was why I hadn't called or texted and that I was really sorry for making them worry. For a moment no one said anything, then uncle Jay slapped his big hands down on his knees.
"Well can't say that I blame the boy, at least he didn't kill the rat."
"Honey!"
"What?" he asked looking innocent. "I just said it was good he didn't kill the weasel is all."
Just like that my uncle was back to his cheerful happy self and I was forgiven. I just smiled as my aunt glared at her husband, clearly she didn't approve of his choice of words. Me I thought it was nice compared to what Sess and his father called him. Before anything else could be said the ringing of the telephone broke in. We all just sat there looking at it a second before Sara went and picked it up.
"Hello. Higarashi residence?" for a moment she just listened to what was being said. Then with a nod that the person on the other end of the line couldn't see she answered. "Yes I understand and that should be fine. We will be on the lookout for them, thank you and have a good night." With that she simply hung up and started out of the room, calling over her shoulder, "Honey why don't you keep me company in the kitchen while Rin goes and changes her clothes."
She didn't bother to wait for a response from us just continued walking knowing we would do as she said. Uncle Jay and I shared a look then a smile as we got up to do as we had been told. She would either tell us what the call had been about or we would have to wait till the time came. Uncle and I split in the hall with him going left to the kitchen and me going right and up the stairs.
(Sara's POV)
"What?!" Jay nearly shouted. I had to hide my smile at the look on his handsome face.
"Keep your voice down dear. I don't want Rin to hear about this yet." I replied calmly. Jay to his credit took a deep breath and started over.
"What do you mean he is staying the night?" his voice was rough and irritated, but not loud and that had been all I asked of him after all.
"Exactly as I said, his mother called and explained that he is heading our way. Also that he is in such a state that he will have to stay." Somehow I managed not to show any of the amusement this conversion was giving me. "I told her that was fine and he could stay as long as he needed to. Really dear you act like it's the end of the world or something."
"It might as well be." He grumbled. I chose to ignore that and turned back to chopping the vegetables for the stew.
"Every last one of those boys has stayed here before at some time or another. Not to mention the fact that just last week all eight of them stayed at the Takayashi house." I pointed out, not bothering to look at him.
"I know that….this just seems different somehow."
I knew what he meant and I had to bite my lip to keep from smiling. Before anything more could be said the sound of the doorbell rang throughout the house. We both glanced toward the front door at the same time. Jay made to move to answer it but I stopped him.
"I'll get that if you will start a pot of coffee please honey."
I got no response as I set down my knife and wiped my hands off. Even so I saw him move toward the coffee maker as I walked out. I had to smile; the man just didn't know what to do in this situation. As I opened the door my smile was still there, but it slipped a bit as I felt the murderous aura coming off the demon in front of me. I could see instantly why Izayoi felt the need to send him here. Standing a few steps behind Sesshomaru were two cops in uniform. One was human and blonde and the taller of the two was a tiger demon with jet black hair. I nodded to them and turned back to the demon in front of me.
"Sesshomaru it's good to see you dear. Please come in, come in." I stepped aside to let the three of them enter the house. As they walked pasted I called out, "I'm sure you know where Rin is, but I'm afraid you'll have to wait for her in the living room dear." Sesshomaru said nothing but turned when he reached the doorway for the living room. The officers simply followed along behind, though I noticed they didn't get very close. It seemed I wasn't the only one to pick up on the aura coming off him.
I followed them down the hall but stopped in the doorway, taking in the pissed off dog demon near the window and the two very tense officers. From my vantage point I could now see that Sesshomaru was in fact the tallest of the three and that the tiger demon had kept himself between Sesshomaru and his partner. I cleared my throat to make sure I had everyone's attention, "Please have a seat and make yourselves at home. Would you like some coffee or anything?" I asked sweetly trying to ease some of the tension in the room. The tiger demon looked over and smiled slightly, "Yes, please coffee would be great." His voice was deep and rough but calm and warm. His deep brown eyes showed his thanks, his partner nodded with a smile. "We also would like to speak with your daughter Rin please." His voice was soft and kind, his light blue eyes the same. Even so I saw Sesshomaru tense even more and he crossed his arms over his chest, as if to stop them from grabbing something.
"Very well then, Sesshomaru dear would you like anything?" I expected no response and got none. He didn't even glance away from the window. I shrugged and with a smile told the officers I would be right back with the coffee.
On the way back to the kitchen I took a detour and walked up the stairs and into Rin's room without knocking. The sudden opening of the door startled her a bit and she jumped.
"Sorry sweetie." I apologized as she turned with a t-shirt half on. I could tell by her slightly damp hair that she had taken a quick shower.
"It's oaky auntie." She replied softly as she pulled the shirt down over her bra.
"I just wanted to tell you before you went down; that a couple of police officers are here to speak with you. Also a very pissed off demon is with them."
As I knew it would her look of curiosity crumbled to worry at once.
"Is he alright? I mean is he-"
Before she could finish I cut her off.
"From what I saw he is just fine; pissed, but fine."
With a somewhat relieved sigh Rin reached out for her jeans lying on the bed. "I'll be down in a moment."
I nodded and walked out. Once I was in the kitchen I found the coffee already on a tray with sugar and creamer and two cups. Next to that was a pitcher of lemonade and two more cups. I smiled at my husband whose back was to me as he finished chopping the veggies for the stew. Picking up the tray I walked back into the living room.
Nothing much had changed other than the fact that the two cops had sat down. They now occupied the two recliners facing more toward the door then the TV; with the tiger demon sitting closest to the window, thus closest to Sesshomaru. Placing the tray down on the coffee table I glanced up catching the eye of the human cop.
"Rin will be down in just a moment." I gestured to the tray. "Please help yourselves." With a quick look out the corner of my eye, I could tell that Sesshomaru hadn't moved an inch from the position I last saw him.
"I take it the two of you are here to speak to Rin about what happened at the school today."
"Yes ma'am." The officer closest to me replied with a quick glace toward the window. The other said nothing, just sipped his coffee, his dark eyes on the demon leaning on the window frame. "I'm officer Stance and this is my partner officer Gregger."
Izayoi had already told me their names over the phone, but I shook their hands. "I'm Sara Higarashi, Rin's aunt." I introduced myself. Officer Stance, the human, looked surprised.
"Forgive me I thought she was your daughter."
"Yes most people do and she is like another daughter to me so most of the time we let it go." I replied kindly with a smile.
At that moment Sesshomaru moved catching all of our attention. His head turned and his beautiful amber eyes locked on the doorway. I looked over just in time to see Rin coming in. She stopped in the door way and looked around, her dark gaze glanced off me and the officers to lock on Sesshomaru.
I stood from my seat on the sofa and held my hand out to her. "Rin dear come here, let me introduce you." I called softly. As she walked to me her eyes stayed on Sesshomaru, but she easily made her way around everything in her path and took my hand; sitting down beside me on the sofa.
"Rin this is officer Stance and his partner officer Gregger." I gestured to each in turn. "They want to talk to you about what happened at the school today." Her dark brown eyes tore away from her demon and looked between the two officers; with a quick glance back to him she shook their hands. The tension in the room went up a notch when Sesshomaru growled.
The two officers lowered their eyes, but I could see that they were watching through their lashes. Officer Stance watched Rin while officer Gregger watched Sesshomaru. Rin simply turned her head toward her demon and stuck out her tongue. I hid my smile as the growl came again, but this time it was playful…or nearly so.
"Well I'm sorry but I really must get back to my cooking." I turned to Rin as I spoke. "Will you be alright?"
She grinned not the least bit concerned. "Sure you go ahead I'll be fine here."
I smiled back. "Alright call if you need anything." With that I stood and walked out of the room.
(Officer Gregger POV)
I watched as the human woman walked out of the room. Knowing she only did it to make sure the dog demon had a place to sit. At the moment though he seemed content to stand next to the window and glare daggers at my partner and I. As was our habit I let Stance do the talking and simply observed the other people in the room.
The girl was at ease not bothered at all by the enraged demon just feet from her or the questions Stance was asking her; she answered in detail and honestly as far as my nose could tell. While Stance finished writing notes on his pad the girl glanced again at the dog demon. From the corner of my eye I saw he was once more looking out the window.
"Sess?" she called softly, his head turned to her at once.
She said nothing more just looked at him. When she raised her brow he narrowed his eyes. Not put off one bit by a look a lot of seasoned officers would back down from she tilted her head to the side slightly.
Clearly these two did not need words to talk as with a sigh the boy gave in to her. The grin that flashed across her pretty face was one of victory. She turned back to Stance as the boy sat down next to her. Almost at once he seemed to calm slightly, that is until Stance spoke.
"Is it true that you once stopped Sesshomaru Takayashi from killing a teacher?" I could tell the question was meant to throw the girl off, but she never missed a beat.
"Yes it is." She replied calmly as she poured two glasses of lemonade; handing one to the demon beside her who took it without a word.
"Can you tell me why he attacked his teacher?"
"Not really, I simply think it was because he said something stupid to an already pissed off demon. As for the real reason you'd have to ask Sess." Was her immediate response.
The questions continued and the girl continued to answer calmly and honestly. The more she talked the calmer the dog demon became and the more I came to release something. At some point in the questioning the boy had stopped listening to what was being said. He was only listening to the sound of her voice. His whole attention was focused on her.
At that moment I became aware of the fact that his left arm was resting behind her along the sofa, his left hand playing with the ends of her hair in its pony. She paid no mind to this simply continued to answer questions. Not even when he pulled the tie from her hair did she pause in her answer, just looked over and took the tie from his open hand and put in on her wrist. When the human reached for the pitcher of lemonade I decided to test a theory floating in my head. I reached out and grabbed the coffee pot, making sure my hand brushed hers.
Sure enough a deep menacing growl came from the boy, his calm gone as if it had never been. I kept my eyes down, but still saw the way her hand brushed lightly over one of his. The growl slowly died away and the girl continued to answer the question Stance had asked before she reached for the lemonade.
With that I had my answer; a mere second of a touch was all it took to know exactly why the dog demon attacked three people in the school. It was surprising that the boy hadn't killed the last one, having taken so many pictures of the girl. I knew plenty of adult demons who would have. After all she belongs to him, just as he belongs to her.
The other boy's family wasn't going to like my report at all. The thought almost made me smile. I continued to watch them as my partner asked question after question and the girl answered. All the while she calmed her mate as best she could without being able to talk to him, and with two other unrelated males in the room.
As we stood to leave I had to say I was impressed with the control the boy had over himself. I could clearly see that, though he was a lot calmer then when Stance had questioned him at his house, he was still really angry and likely to stay that way for some time. The girl was going to have her hands full keeping him in line.
"Thank you for your time Miss Higarashi." Stance called as he paused in the doorway.
"Not a problem at all Officer Stance." Was the kind response given with a smile.
It was the smile, I believe, that made her demon growl. I couldn't help but smile back when her only response to that was to lean back against him. Just before I walked out the door behind Stance I glanced back at the two of them, and with a grin told the boy. "Make sure you keep taking good care of her Mr. Takayashi. I'm sure that boy isn't the only one who would like to steal her."
The look of surprise on the girls face told me she, at least, didn't know what was going on. The look on the dog demons face told me this might not be the last report we would have to take from these two. It made me chuckle as I closed the door and walked over to my squad car.
(Sess POV)
I said nothing as the officers finally left, leaving me alone with my Rin if only for a moment. She still leaned against me so I wrapped my arms around her waist pulling her closer. I closed my eyes and just inhaled her intoxicating sent. It didn't surprise me, anymore then it surprised my father, that the moment those two came to talk with me my shaky hold on calm shattered.
The two were simply lucky my father had been home when they came to talk to me; as it was only his presence that allowed me to sit long enough to answer their questions. Luckily neither was stupid they kept their questions short and to the point, and most in their favor they made no comment when my father told me to show them the way to Rins.
A small soft hand touched my cheek just then and pulled me from my thoughts. I opened my eyes to meet beautiful dark brown orbs.
"It wasn't that bad you know." Rin told me softly with a teasing smile.
I knew I couldn't speak just yet so I didn't even try, simply laid my head on her shoulder and held her close. I heard her soft sigh as she turned in my hold and placed her delicate arms around my neck returning my embrace.
"Oh Sesshomaru what am I going to do with you?"
A gentle nip to her small shoulder was my only answer to that. As her laughter spilled into the air I soaked it up, knowing it would help to calm my raging demon, but also knowing it was a drop in the hat of what I really needed.
"The two of you just going to stand in the hall all evening?" a grumpy male voice called from a short distance away. Looking over my shoulder I met the light brown gaze of Jay Higarashi. For Rins sake I allowed her to pull away from me to go to her uncle, though I stayed close all the same. I could tell the man was upset, but he did a great job of hiding it from my Rin so I made no protest when he hugged her. Still over her head his eyes narrowed on me, and I knew right then that sometime during the rest of the day he would find a chance to speak to me alone. Rin stepped back and opened her mouth to speak, but before a sound could come out the front door burst open and Kagome and the boy Sota spilled into the hall.
"Oh my god, Rin!" Kagome rushed down the hall and dropped her bag and Rins on the floor before she threw herself into my Rins arms. "You have no idea how many people asked me what was going on. If it wasn't 'why did Sesshomaru kiss her?' is was 'I thought she was mute, how can she talk?' .
Not seeming to need a response she pulled back slightly from Rin to look at me. Her light brown eyes showed her confusion as well as irritation, they narrowed slightly as she spoke to me. "Why are you here?"
I felt no need to answer her and so just glared back at her. Sota took one look at my face and slipped passed his sister, cousin and father to join his mother in the kitchen.
"Shouldn't you be at home by now?"
I remained silent, I had no reason to speak to the woman and it was none of her concern. Rin pulled away from her and started to speak but her uncle bet her to it.
"Sesshomaru is going to be staying here tonight." He told his daughter with a glare in my direction. As Rin was between the two of us, I chose to let it go. At this news Kagome took a closer look at me and then nodded.
"I see, well Rin I was able to get all of the work you missed and the homework as well. I also grabbed the stuff from your locker." She said as she picked up Rins bag and handed it to her then picked up her own. "Well I have a lot of homework as well so I'll be in my room if anyone needs me."
That said she started past her father and up the stairs. As she reached the fifth stair Rin seemed to remember her voice. "Kagome?" when her cousin turned she continued, "Thanks for getting my stuff and sorry for all the trouble."
"It was no trouble Rin, you would do the same for me, but you are welcome all the same." She answered with a gentle smile. When Rin smiled back Kagome continued up the stairs.
That left only Rin, her uncle and I in the hall once more. We all just stood there not saying anything. Rin was going through her bag and so didn't see the glare her uncle was giving me, and as she was still between us I ignored it once more. Seeing as my demon merely thought of it as amusing. I was pretty sure he was glaring because he knew just what my behaver meant or at least a very good idea.
"Well it looks like on top of the work I missed during school the teachers all decided to give out three pages of homework each." Her voice was soft and she didn't look up. "Well I guess I better get started if I want to finish it all before dinner."
"Alright baby you go do your work. We will call you and Kagome when dinner is ready." Jay spoke gently to my Rin the glare gone replaced with a loving smile. Rin returned the smile and he walked away heading back to the kitchen and his wife and son. My eyes followed his movement not seeing anything else until a small delicate warm hand slipped into mine. Instantly she had my whole attention.
"Come on Sess." Was all she said and with a pull on my hand, that I barley felt, she had me following her up the stairs.
As my Rin sat at her desk doing her homework I sat in her window seat and read one of her many books. She seemed to know I was in no mood to talk and so said nothing as she worked, just left me to my book. For hours we stayed that way not one word said between us. Her door was open so I could see when her uncle or cousins walked by. They never said anything but they looked in at the two of use every time. I knew Rin was aware of them but she didn't seem to mind and so even with that small irritation my demon calmed little by little. When dinner was ready it was Rins aunt that came to the door.
"Rin sweetheart, Sesshomaru dinner is ready go wash up please." Rin had glanced over when her name was called and now she turned to me; a smile spreading across her beautiful face.
"Come on Sess, I'm starving." She told me as she pushed away from her desk.
"Alright." I spoke softly but knew that some of the irritation I still felt could be heard. She chose to let it go, knowing my demon was still riding me pretty hard even now. It wasn't something I was used to, my demon being upset. Before Rin nothing got to me let alone my demon. Silently I followed behind my Rin to wash up. Even knowing it was all due to this small delicate human women, I couldn't bring myself to care. Rin had changed something inside of me and there was no way to change it back, I was so far gone I wouldn't change it even if I could.
So I sat beside Rin at the dinner table and didn't speak even once during the meal. Rin and Sota did enough of that for everyone though that didn't stop the others from joining in. After dinner I helped Rin with the dishes ignoring the looks from her family, and then sat with her as she talked with the others for a while in the living room.
When she was ready I followed her back upstairs, and waited in the hall as she changed into an over large t-shirt and shorts to sleep in; then climbed into bed with her. She snuggled up to me and rested her head on my chest. With her so close and her sent the only thing I could smell my demon finally settled down.
"Night Sesshomaru," came her sleepy voice from below my chin. I could tell she was half asleep already and it made me smirk. "Good night my Rin." I whispered before I kissed her forehead. I held her like that for a long while, feeling her breath even out as she fell into a deeper more restful sleep. I closed my eyes knowing I wouldn't sleep but willing to try. It wasn't too long after that that I heard the footsteps. They stopped right outside Rin's open door; I kept my eyes closed knowing who it was. When he showed no sign of leaving I snapped my eyes open.
(Jay's POV)
I stopped just outside Rin's doorway and looked inside. I could easily see the way she cuddled up to him and the way he held her close. From the peaceful look on her sleeping face I knew she had no problem sharing her bed with the angry demon. I also knew he was awake and even as angry as he was there was no way he would hurt her.
As a man I knew that, but as a father I also knew there was a way he could hurt her; and it was a hurt she would never be able to recover from. When his cold amber eyes snapped open to lock on me I wasn't too shocked; after all the boy was anything but stupid. He knew why I was here.
I crossed my arms over my chest and leaned against the doorframe. A minute passed and he didn't speak, neither did I. He waited as I took in the way he held my brothers only living child. A child I had watched grow and suffer over the years, a child I loved as one of my own.
"She is all I have left of my brother." When I spoke I kept my voice so low it was barely a whisper, still I knew he heard every word clear as day. I kept my eyes on his as I continued, "I loved my brother very much, we were really close and she is all I have left of him in this world." I could tell I had his full attention now. "She means more to me then I could ever explain."
"So tell me, why should I trust you with her?"
"What is she to you?"
After a few moments of silence, where we just stared at one another, he finally spoke.
It was a simple answer and said in such a way and tone that it was impossible not to believe.
It was everything I needed to hear to know I could trust this man with my brothers little girl.
"Everything." His voice was calm, gentle, unwavering and excepting.
The moment he spoke Rin stirred, pushing closer to his side. His eyes never left mine, but he adjusted so she could move closer and he could still hold her.
With a nod I pushed away from the doorframe.
"Very well." Nothing was left to be said, so I simply walked away leaving her in the care of her demon.
One heavy cloud now gone from my mind.
AN: again I'm sooooooo sorry I took so long to update. After august I will be able to work on this more as I should have more free time but in the meantime hope you enjoyed this and don't forget to review.:)
