(Seventh Grade)
The window had shown a reflection of herself, but she didn't pay mind to it, instead she payed attention to what was on the other side, a beautiful necklace that was showcased under a sparkling light and locked within a glass case, it was an emerald that was being surrounded with tiny gold vines, it reflected through her eyes as she became more and more mesmerized.
Her eyes slowly scooted from the gem down to the little plaque that had gold writing on it, "The forest emerald, a gem that was once said to be created for a princess who believed every bit of life was valued equally, her final words before passing were "Our lives shouldn't be considered any more valuable than others, no matter size, age, status, or looks…..we are all equal in life"".
She smiled upon finishing the writing, "Beautiful words…" She jumped when she heard the unfamiliar voice.
She looked to her side and saw a young man standing there, his hand behind his back as he kept staring at the window, he was nicely dressed wearing a refined suit and shoes with a gold chain and several rings on his fingers. His hair was combed back and there was a blonde highlight running through the middle of it.
"Yeah, i always love coming here and reading that quote, it gives me hope and faith in humanity"
"Yes, I've noticed you, always here standing in front of the shop at the same time, you just stand here and smile".
" I hope to one day own such a beautiful necklace, but it's very expensive, this one's 30,000, it's amazing how much money people have".
"Yes well…...that's a good thing, that way i'm able to have customers and afford a living".
He turned to face her as she did the same, he was smiling and so was she, but then his smile slowly faded.
"I can't help but notice you always staring through my window, and i must say it's a nuisance…."
"Huh?" she frowned, slowly backing away but he grabbed hold of her arm and roughly pulled her in.
"I let it happen once and twice and maybe a third time and a couple times after that but it started getting annoying, seeing a little pest such as you shadowing over my display case with your dirty little fingers was messing with my business".
His brows had furrowed together as his grip tightened, she was flinching in pain as his nails began digging into her, "Please…..sir…..stop, i'm sorry, I won't come here anymore".
"It better not happen again, unless you plan to come in and buy something then you better not show your repulsive self around my glass again you pathetic girl, heh, although….. i doubt you will be able to afford any of my jewelry, i can tell just by the way you dress that you have no money at all".
Tears were streaming down her eyes, she looked down at herself, looking at the clothes she wore, her shoes were worn out and covered in dirt, her pants were ripped but nobody could tell they were from the pants being too old instead of just being there intentionally, her green shirt was losing its color and fading.
"True…...i may not have money, but i'm glad i don't, i have something far more priceless, something you don't have".
He chuckled, "And what's that?"
"Manners, kindness, a heart".
His nostrils flared, he was angry, he released her and lifted his hand, she flinched and closed her eyes waiting for the sharp pain in her face, but nothing.
"How dare you try to hit a girl". She opened her eyes and there he was, Gary, grabbing the man's wrist and holding it as he stood in between the two of them.
"Why you!" He tried to use his other hand but the brunette quickly caught it, twisting it and then pushing the man back.
"Just who the hell do you think you are". he spat angrily, he rubbed his wrists as he angrily glared at the two of them.
"Leaf!" She looked over and saw the girls along with the rest of the guys rushing over to them.
"What happened?" They hugged her and she held on to them tightly as she stared at Gary and the guys now blocking them.
He looked angry, pissed, enraged, his fists were tightening but he kept his cool composure like he always did.
He pointed straight at the man "That asshole almost hit her".
"What?!" their heads snapped faster than you can tell, there expressions had changed.
"What's a matter with you?!" Dawn hissed.
"Coward!" May shouted
"What a pathetic sad old man, striking a young girl when obviously knowing she is weaker to you". Paul snorted and shook his head.
"Say everything you want, i don't care as long as your little poor friend stops plastering herself in front of my display case, nobody will buy from me if they see someone like her standing around."
"And what's wrong with her?!" Misty growled back.
"Just look at her…..she has low class written all over her".
Gary snapped, he lashed out, "That's stupid! you should be happy Leaf stands in front of your shop everyday, she actually brings beauty to this dump!"
Drew laughed and then smirked as he flicked his bangs, "You probably scare away your customers with that nasty attitude".
Her eyes were getting watery, she closed them allowing the tears to fall as Dawn held onto her, "It's ok Leaf". she whispered as she rubbed her back up and down.
"Enough! leave before i call the cops and get you arrested for disturbing the peace".
"That's a stupid excuse". Ash rolled his eyes.
"Fine, we'll go….but before we do, i want to buy that necklace on the display window".
The guy laughed, he kept laughing almost finding it funny that Gary would say such a thing, "Oh really? and how are you going to pay for it? with your piggy bank?" He was mocking the brunette continuously but he still kept his cool and calm attitude.
He crossed his arms and held his right hand up slightly, there was a gold card in between his fingers and a smirk riding across his lips. The man's laughter had stopped.
"Gary…." she released her hug from Dawn and walked over to Gary who looked back and winked at her with a grin.
The man rushed in and brought out the necklace within a green velvet case and a small card scanning machine.
Gary swiped the card and it beeped green, "How…...how do you have so much money, you're just a kid". the mans shocked expression hadn't changed in the least, he handed the box to Gary but he nudged Leaf to take it, she shook her head but he smiled.
"Leaf…..i want you to have it, it was meant for you".
She stopped, and looked at the box and then at everyone else, they had smiles all across, except for Paul, but he's always like that, she took a deep breath in and took the box in her hands.
"I guess that's that, oh….wait…." he laughed, the man quirked an eyebrow.
"I forgot to introduce myself, I'm Gary Oak". the man's jaw dropped, his eyes nearly fell out, he choked on the words he wanted to spill out but nothing made any sense.
He took Leafs hand into his own and turned his back to the man but looked back this time with a smirk, "I'll make sure to let my Grandfather know of the fantastic service you just provided for us today".
He walked away, the girls giggling while the boys laughing, "No! wait! you're grandfather's my best customer! I'm sorry!"
"A little too late for sorry if you ask me". Dawn mumbled.
"Is that true Gary?"
"About what?" He released Leaf's hand and put his arms behind his back as he looked at the sky now.
She looked down at the necklace and smiled warmly then shut it close as she looked over to Gary, "That your grandpas his best customer?"
"Yeah, gramps is constantly wooing women that he dates with jewelry he buys them, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and all that".
"Damn…..your gramps sure can spend" Ash whistled.
They ended up at the park, Drew and May took off to the rose garden near the kinder school, Ash went running after the ice cream cart with Misty while Dawn dragged Paul to the swings leaving only Leaf and Gary alone.
They stopped underneath a large tree where Leaf opened up the box again, staring at the necklace that had been on the other side of the window since as long she can remember, the necklace that was worn by a princess who gave her faith, the necklace she thought she would never have in a lifetime.
She lightly glided her finger across the emerald mumbling the words in the plaque that she had remembered since the first time she read it, "Our lives shouldn't be considered any more valuable than others, no matter size, age, status, or looks…..we are all equal in life".
He stood there, his hands by his sides as he looked at the necklace, then he noticed a tear drop fall on the emerald giving it a beautiful shine under the sun.
"Leaf…." he grabbed her hand, but she refused to look up at him.
"I can never change who i am, people look at me and all they see is a poor girl, and when they see a poor girl they think she's a thief and just some pathetic low life, they can never stop to look and hear me, to see that i am not like others, all i want is to be a good person and try to work for a better future, that way i can never struggle with money again, but nobody ever wants to hear a bum, let alone a foster kid".
He frowned, staring as the emerald was being showered with tears now.
"Leaf….look at me".
She wiped her tears as she swiped her arm across her face, she looked at him then, a sincere face he had, he stared into her forest green eyes and wiped the tear that was ready to fall with his thumb.
"I don't care who tells you that, but you shouldn't listen to what other people say, they may have money and status, but if they don't have a heart like yours then they haven't won in life like you have, you don't need money to be happy, but they do, you have the greatest friends anyone can ask for and you have me".
She laughed a little, wiping the happy tears away from her face now, he chuckled along, "I really do have the greatest friends anyone can ever have, especially you".
She threw herself into a hug with him embracing her tightly, "Leaf…..Don't ever let anyone tell you who you are".
"I won't…..i promise".
They stayed quiet for a bit as they kept themselves still in each others arms, when they released he grabbed the box and the necklace turning her around so he can put it on her.
"I still don't feel like i should accept it, it's worth so much and i just can't…"
"I don't care about the money, i've seen you eyeing it everyday and being able to give it to you was worth every cent, i'd give you anything Leaf, just to keep you smiling".
She hugged him again, "Thank you…..i don't know what i would do if i didn't have you in my life Gary…...you really are my best friend".
"yeah…..best friend".
*But...will you ever see me as more than a friend?*
(Present, Leaf and Gary)
"So where to?" He was slowly bobbing his head to the music playing on the radio.
She was slumped in her seat, her head resting against the side as she let the fresh air blow in her face.
"Yo….directions" he quickly stole a look at her before turning his eyes back to the road.
She sighed, "why do you want to come along? why can't you just leave me where i need to go and drive off".
"Mmmmmmmm….well, because i have time to kill, so tell me where is this place you need to be".
"Ugh, fine, but you're going to have to go Downtown".
"On it". He turned the wheel and made a sharp u turn making all the other cars driving by stop and screech in their tracks, Leaf held onto her seat snapping her head at Gary with a sharp glare.
"What the heck was that for?!"
"I thought it would be cool to do…..and it was". he smirked and then looked at her, she rolled her eyes but his expression wasn't affected.
"Whatever, just get me Downtown".
(Ten minutes later)
"Alright we're here, now where to?"
she scooted up in her seat and looked out the window, taking in the view and looking for something, then she pointed to the street on the left.
"Go left and then make a right on Grove avenue, when you reach the apartment next to a burger joint stop in front".
He nodded and took a left and followed the rest of the way as she described it, he parked in front of the apartments she had said, they looked normal, just your average apartments, they were colored beige and looked remodeled, there was a gate in front with a number pad next to it.
They got out and walked up to the gate, he locked his car from afar and then looked at Leaf, "Is this where you live?"
"Not anymore" she pressed a code into the pad and the door opened, they walked in avoiding the stares the little kids gave them, the girls were giggling and whispering as they stared at Gary, he quirked an eyebrow. They went up the second floor and made it to the end of the hall where she pulled out a key and put it in the door of the room numbered 36.
It opened, she entered and then Gary went after, the lights went on and he caught sight of the place, it looked decent. homey and nice, modern it was, she disappeared into the only hall which led to the bathroom at the end and the bedroom on the side.
He could hear her rummaging through cabinets and objects being flung, "So….uh, if you say you don't live here…..then why are we here?"
"Because i came to get my things". he turned around and saw her ready with a luggage bag and rolling suitcase.
"You're just moving out ? like that?" she shrugged.
"Why not? It's not my apartment, it's my ex boyfriends".
His shoulders broadened, he furrowed his eyebrows his tone changed, "You were living with your boyfriend?"
"Ex-boyfriend now, and yeah, once i turned 18 i'm allowed to leave on my own, although Big sister Ivy told me i could stay for as long as i wanted, i knew i had to begin living in the real world by myself".
"well...not exactly, you lived with your ex". he snorted and then smirked, she glared at him.
"The point is, i still have things to take care of before i live my life on my own".
"And what's that?" he crossed his arms.
"You're about to find out". she walked past him throwing him her luggage bag to carry, he looked back at the room and them hmphed, "Goodbye whoever you are…."
She placed the key on the table next to the door and closed the door after, sighing and then walking away as Gary kept his smirk.
Once they placed her bags in the car they took off again, "So, why'd you two break up?"
"I realized he was a jerk, he didn't like me spending so much time visiting the orphanarium".
"Sounds like a real jerk if you ask me". he sneered.
"yeah, well i'm through with him now so i'm glad".
"Did…..you guys ever sleep in the same bed?"
"yeah, why?"
He shook his head, "So you guys must have been close then".
"If you're trying to figure out if we've had sex, then the answer is no, we may have moved in together and slept in the same bed but i have morals, besides, he asked me to move in with him, i would have slept in the couch but it wasn't comfortable at all".
"I- I wasn't trying to see if you two have…...anyways that's good, you listened to your morals".
"What would you know about morals?" she snickered, he rolled his eyes.
"So where are we going now?"
She looked out her side of the window, "Home"
Taking several turns and after going through difficult streets they ended up in front of a large building, it was gated with large metals bar gates, the building looked like a boarding school but it looked old and broken, wallflowers were growing on the sides, the grass was dead and color on the building was fading.
"So this is the orphanarium….." he stared at it and then at Leaf, she looked mesmerized, her eyes were gleaming but she closed them and shook her head.
"Yeah…...you or the rest never got to see it, you've only met my foster families".
"Oh yeah…." he took his key out and got out the car rushing over to the other side and opening the door for Leaf who returned a semi confused look to him over his action.
They grabbed her things and the went past the gate, the creaking made him cringe but Leaf looked unaffected by it.
The walk seemed like forever but when they reached the buildings front staircase and entrance she stopped, he stopped quickly after and stood beside her, staring at her and noticing that she was staring up at the building.
"Hey…..you ok?" she shook her head and looked over at him with a tiny smile.
"Yeah…..just a rush of memories are coming to me".
She took in a deep breath and made her way up the staircase pushing the door open, the inside looked exceptionally much better than the outside, although it looked vintage it was still better than cracks and dust.
A woman came in from the living room entrance which was on the left, she looked young for her age, long violet locks and green forest eyes, she had an apron on over which she was using to clean her hands, "Hello there….I'm sister….." she stopped once she looked up, her hands dropped and mouth stayed open.
She stood there, just staring at Leaf who did the same, her eyes tearing up and a smile building up, "Sister Ivy….". they ran towards each other and tackled one another in hug.
"Everybody! Leaf's back!"
He flinched and looked up at the ceiling when he heard several thuds, almost as if things had dropped, then there were more thuds as if there was running, "Leaf!" a crowd of small kids had stopped at the top of the stairway and then quickly rushed down to surround the brunette in a group.
"Leaf! I'm so glad you're back!"
"Now we can play tea party everyday!"
"Ew! forget tea parties, Leaf and me are going to play combat!"
"Nu uh! Me and Leaf are going to play princesses!"
Suddenly there was a fight over the girl, half of the kids were pulling her by the left arm and the rest by the right arm, she was still smiling but sweat was pouring from her head.
"Kids, c'mon i'm sure Leaf is very exhausted and wants to rest before playing with any of you". the woman stayed calm as she tried to yank the kids away but they proved to be a challenge.
He chuckled, then ran a hand through his hair as he smoothly made his way over to the group, he grabbed Leaf and twirled her over into his arms as he dipped her down and shot a flirty grin to the rest.
The little girls grew red as Ivy cheekily smiled at the sight of Leaf's face, the boys stared up in wonder and Awe, there eyes twinkling at the sight of his "awesomeness".
Ivy giggled, "Oh my…..Leaf…..is this your boyfriend"?
Her head shot up as he still kept her dipped down, "What?! no!" she stood herself up and pushed him away.
"Hello ma'am, My names Gary, Gary oak". he flashed yet another prestigious grin, his white teeth shone under the light making the little girls swoon, he gently grabbed Ivy's hand kissing the top it and then proceeding to do the rest with the girls.
"He's like a prince!" little hearts had appeared in there eyes.
She snorted and crossed her arms mumbling, "He's far from a prince".
"Excuse me…..did you say, Gary Oak?". Ivy's eyes widened, he nodded.
Her jaw dropped,"So then that means your grandfather is Samuel Oak, the billionaire".
He laughed, "It's nothing, really".
He was quickly surrounded by the kids this time, the girls tugging on his right and the guys tugging on his left.
"Do you have your own jet?!"
"Do you have your own Ponytas?!"
"Are you married?!"
"Do you have a girlfriend?!"
"If you don't, then will you be sister Leaf's Girlfriend?!"
"Then you can marry her!"
They turned red, Leaf shook her head and shooed them away from him, "C'mon you guys what did i say about pestering people, you overwhelm them".
There heads slowly dropped, "Sorry big sis".
He let out a sigh, then he looked at his wrist, he quirked an eyebrow "Hey….what happened to my watch?"
Leaf crossed her arms and spun on her heel directing herself to face a particular individual, a little boy aged to be about 8, he had dark raven hair and blue cerulean eyes, he had light freckles over his tanned skin, she held her hand out as he had his behind his back.
"Felix…..give him back his watch". he rolled his eyes and pulled his hands out giving Leaf the gold watch.
She returned it back to him, "Thanks…"
"Sorry about that…..there little jokesters aren't they?"
"Yeah, but cute".
One of the girls had grabbed Leaf's hand, she had cute little red locks tied into pigtails and smokey gray eyes, "So Leaf, is Gary your boyfriend?"
She laughed as did Gary, "No…..he's just a…..a uh…." she looked over at him but couldn't find the words.
He stepped in completing the sentence, "I'm just her friend, that's all".
Ivy had a finger over her lips as she stared up in thought, "That's reminds me….if you're Gary oak, then he must have been the one you were always talking about back-ah!" Leaf rushed by her side and covered her mouth as she continued muffling, a large smirk was now plastered on Gary.
"You talked about me back then?" his smirk widened.
She rolled her eyes but didn't respond, "Well…...in case any of you care, i'm moving back in".
"Yay!" they pushed past the brunette as they tackled Leaf to the ground hugging her.
He starred in contempt, "She's always been good with them, when she left they were so disappointed that things just never felt the same around here".
Ivy looked over and smiled, "I knew who you were, since a long time i have, i just thought it would be funny to get Leaf's face red and pink".
"Ivy, can i ask you something?"
She nodded, "Sure hun".
"Did…..you approve of Leaf moving in with her boyfriend"?
She stifled a laugh, "Jealous?"
He humphed, "No…."
"Well if you want to know, no, i didn't approve of him, mostly because i didn't like him, he had bad news written all over him, he was very controlling of Leaf and tried to force her to stop visiting the kids".
"it's a good thing she dumped him then".
"Say….would you liked to join us for Lunch? I'm just about done with the food".
"what?!" Leaf's head had barely gone up since she was still on the floor.
"Oh yeah! Stay stay! then after Lunch Gary can play with us!"
He chuckled, looking straight at Leaf who slowly moved her head side to side with a glare.
"I would love to stay for lunch".
