Chap 1
Robin POV
If there was one word that Robin could use to describe how she felt right now, it would probably be anxious. She had woken up in a random field not too long ago. That by itself wouldn't be so bad but she also realized she couldn't remember anything about herself besides a few sparse details.
She could recall some general knowledge such as the fact she knew how to read, write, and do math. This indicated she was likely from either a noble family of some kind or at least a wealthy one in order for her to be so educated. If not that, then perhaps she was some kind of apprentice to a scholar. However, knowledge regarding her past or even the world at large seemed to be entirely missing from her memory.
Even her own name, Robin, took some time for her to recall. Oddly enough, the only thing she seemed to remember without any prompting was the name of one of the people who found her. Chrom. He and his sister Lissa had found her sleeping in that field. They were dressed in fine clothes and were accompanied by an intimidating knight named Frederick.
Things had moved far too quickly for her after that. Before she knew it, the group had already decided they would be escorting her to the nearest town. That might have comforted her except for the fact that they were armed and Frederick kept making his suspicion and displeasure of her well known.
Chrom and Lissa seemed nice enough but for all she knew it could be some kind of facade and they were luring her into some horrible fate!
Ok, maybe she was getting ahead of herself, but it was hard to think calmly when she had no memories of her past and she was in the company of armed strangers, with at least one of them glaring at her without pause!
Honestly at this point she just wanted something to happen, ANYTHING, to break the tension she was feeling. Maybe if she-
Wait, is that smoke? Wait, where are they going? Are they leaving her?!
Hey! Wait a minute! They can't just leave her alone like this!
As Robin ran after her… companions? Captors? Temporary acquaintances. As she ran after her temporary acquaintances she finally noticed some things that were on her person that had been hidden by her large(and incredibly comfy) coat.
Some kind of book? IS THIS A SWORD?! Oh, she suddenly recalled knowing how to use a sword… WHY DOES SHE KNOW HOW TO USE A SWORD?! IS SHE ACTUALLY SOMEONE DANGEROUS?! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-
Chrom POV
Huh. For a second it sounded like someone was screaming. Which makes sense since the town they were heading to was currently being attacked by bandits, but this scream sounded like it was coming back from the path they left Robin at. He'd have to look into that after he dealt with the bandits here just in case. He was confident that Robin would be safe but he would feel guilty if he left the poor woman alone only to find out she got hurt somehow.
Turning back to town he couldn't help but grit his teeth. These people were innocent villagers and yet they were made victims by greedy brigands. Even despite the best efforts of him and Shepherds it felt like the bandit attacks were only getting more frequent.
He caught sight of a body, it was a militiaman. Ylisse had dissolved its army after Emm became Exalt but it still maintained a militia to defend its towns from beasts and brigands. They were only meant to repel small attacks or buy time until they could be reinforced by the Pegasus Knights or his Shepherds but for the group stationed at this town to be wiped out so easily by a simple bandit raid was strange.
Southtown was a small settlement, which means only around four or five militiamen would have been stationed there, but they would have been trained to fight and have some experience using swords and spears. Against brigands who mainly used axes and sometimes had swords, the militia should have had an advantage thanks to their equipment and training.
He would have to work with Frederick and investigate this more deeply once they took care of the brigands. For now they should-
Hearing a voice call from behind him, Chrom turned around to see Robin chasing after them. She looked panicked and was waving around a sword and a tome. Wait, where did she get a sword and a tome?
Frederick POV
As he listened to the discussion Lord Chrom was having with the suspicious woman, Robin, he couldn't help but frown in wariness. His nickname, Frederick the Wary, may have been given in jest but he took it seriously and wore it with pride.
From the moment they found this Robin woman, he couldn't help but be suspicious of her intentions. Her white hair and dark clothing implied Plegian origins. She supposedly had amnesia and regardless of how true that was, she knew his Lord's name. And now she seemingly came armed with both blade and magic while claiming to possess some kind of supernatural tactical sense?
No matter what her intentions he couldn't trust her. Everything about her was too strange, too suspicious, and having something that unpredictable so close to his charges was a source of endless stress for the knight. But so long as his lord wished for it he would tolerate the strange woman's presence, though he would be watching her vigilantly.
Despite his misgivings however, he would grudgingly admit that her abilities as a tactician were superb. While initially unsure of herself, Robin had quickly grown more confident as she directed them through the ruined village against the brigands. While these bandits would pose little threat to Frederick or his lord Chrom, Lissa was still vulnerable and inexperienced in live combat. Not only did Robin's strategies ensure Lissa's safety by denying their enemies any openings to her, they also took into account small details that allowed both Chrom and himself to avoid what small amounts of damage they may have taken had they fought on their own.
It only served to further his frustrations regarding her situation. She was a chaotic mess of contradictions and he couldn't make any sense of it. But, while he wanted nothing more than to scrutinize her until he could be assured she was no threat to his charges, Frederick knew he had to focus on the current battle first.
Lissa POV
Despite how she acts and despite how her brother and Frederick treat her, Lissa is more than a peppy, strong-willed princess who needs to be babied.
She knows that the world is a dangerous place, that there are people she should be wary of because they might want to kill her or ransom her or worse. But that doesn't mean she should just sit around the castle all the time and hope that things work out. It's not fair that her brother is going around protecting people saying that it's his duty, meanwhile he tells her that it's too dangerous for her.
Both Emm and Chrom are doing their best to protect the peace of Ylisse and Lissa would be damned if she didn't do her part too. She was just as capable! She may be a healer but that didn't mean she couldn't defend herself.
"Besides." She thought to herself as she casted a Heal spell on Chrom. "If it weren't for me constantly healing them when they throw themselves into fights like reckless dummies, they'd have died ages ago."
She was surprised though, with how much less the two meatheads were taking injuries. Obviously against no name brigands they had no chance of losing, but both Chrom and Frederick tended to just power through blows if they thought they could handle it, which led to them getting more injured than they should.
When they found Robin in that field, Lissa was more concerned with helping them. At the time, the poor girl looked like a lost and confused puppy that would get eaten alive if left alone. Yet here they were now with the amnesiac leading them like some kind of super tactician. It was like she could predict the future! And she could use swords! AND she could use MAGIC! Like holy Naga, Lissa was almost expecting for her to start flying and shoot flames from her mouth or something.
She could feel herself puffing her chest out in smug pride. HA! And Frederick thought they should have just left Robin in the field they found her in. Jokes on him, look who's laughing now. Well ok, she wasn't actually laughing since breaking out in smug laughter in the middle of a battle would probably be really weird, BUT IT WAS THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS.
Taking a moment to collect herself, Lissa paused as she heard the sound of weapons clashing in the near distance. That was odd, Chrom and Robin were fighting in front of her. And Frederick was a bit ahead of them but he was still in eyeshot too. Did that mean there were still members of the militia that survived?
She found herself running towards the sounds even as Chrom shouted at her to come back. If there were survivors then they might be hurt. She had to go and help them. She couldn't forgive herself if they held out this long only to die from their injuries because she was too scared to reach them in time.
This was her duty as a princess of Ylisse. Not so fun when someone else says it huh Chrom?
? POV
In the burning ruins of Southtown, a young man dressed in the uniform of Ylisse's militia found himself reminiscing as he cut down another bandit. Looking back on the events that led to his current situation was almost enough to make him laugh at the absurdity of it all, if he wasn't currently fighting for his life.
His name was Alexander, or at least that was his name now. In his previous life he was an average person, living day-to-day and trying to make ends meet. He would indulge in his hobbies and try to make the most of his dull life. Then one day when he was walking around the neighbourhood he got killed in a giant traffic accident that involved several cars and trucks going nuts and crashing everywhere at max speed. It was like a morbid combination of Initial D, Twisted Metal, Fast and Furious, GTA, and whatever other crazy car thing you could think of all rolled into one explosive incident.
After that disaster Alex woke up in a cliche blank void and got some exposition by a god like being. Apparently someone else had been isekai'd a while back and worked their way up into becoming a higher power. This was their first time trying to isekai someone else and they screwed up and panicked. This led to an escalating series of attempts to kill one person that led to vehicular massacre that killed me and countless others. The being that told all of this to Alex was one of several that had to step in to help clean up the mess.
After that they didn't actually do the isekai thing. Instead they helped Alex get over the shock of what they experienced then comforted him and helped him work through his emotions as everything sunk in. That lasted a decent while but was certainly appreciated.
After finally calming down, Alex was then informed that everyone who died in that fiasco was being compensated with their own isekai adventures. Due to the sheer number of souls being processed there were more limits on where he could go and what benefits he could start with, but at least they were nice enough to be upfront about it. He couldn't really measure time in the void so Alex wasn't sure how long they spent working on his own Isekai selection.
Eventually it was decided that he would be dropped in Fire Emblem Awakening. It was a game he was very familiar with and enjoyed. It had a lot of characters he liked and despite being a medieval setting, the fantasy magic aspects of it meant he would still have access to equivalents to modern conveniences like proper plumbing and hygiene. He was being dropped in Ylisse and would be born at a point that would match his age to the rest of the main cast.
Unfortunately, he would be born with an average body for the setting which meant that he would be an NPC in terms of stats and growths. Luckily he was assured that he at least still had proper stat growth and could keep up with the other characters if he worked hard enough and played things smart. And while he didn't get some OP starting ability that would make him an army killer, he did still get something that would be crucial to his survival. A limited form of the Tactician Vision that let Robin see the probability of certain outcomes when units fought each other. In Robin's case they could see a bird's eye view of the battlefield, check the movement and attack range of units, measure the chance of attacks hitting, critical hit chance, and even the amount of damage attacks would do. My version didn't grant me a bird's eye view which limited the data I could see to myself and whoever was in my field of vision. This basically meant that I could measure the danger immediately around me, unless I was ambushed from a blind spot.
Finally they let me roll for my bloodline, since Awakening was a bit of a weird point in the timeline there were people related to characters that didn't seem connected in any way. For example, Chrom was one of the main characters and is a descendent of Marth. That makes sense, but then later in the post game you can meet Priam, a guy who is supposedly a distant descendent of Ike from Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. As far as most fans know, Marth and Ike have no connection to each other in any way shape or form outside of them both being in Super Smash Brothers. You could also find the legendary weapons used by characters from a bunch of the previous games. Awakening also has a variant of the Laguz, shapeshifting beast people, in the form of the Taguel. It was a bit of a confusing mess but this meant that if Alex got lucky in his bloodline roll he could be a descendent of a legendary hero or he could have dragon blood or something.
The good news was that Alex apparently rolled something pretty good. The bad news was that he wasn't allowed to know what it was until he discovered it in his new life.
Finally it was time for him to embrace his new life as a Fire Emblem Character.
The first several years were basically a blur. This was fair since he was a baby and his brain wasn't fully developed and honestly, Alex was fine not remembering years of pooping and crying. This also made his transition into the world a bit smoother since his memories of his past life would slowly integrate with him in a way that didn't cause him to freak out or get labelled as a crazy person.
From an outside perspective, Alex simply seemed naturally mature for his age with a solid idea of what he wanted to be when he grew up. Technically this was true, most people just didn't have the context regarding the how or why.
Knowing that he was now a Fire Emblem character, one with minimal if any plot armor, meant that he would need to prepare as much as possible if he wanted any chance of both getting involved in the main plot and to survive it. Getting sideline completely meant being left totally helpless in the face of Grima's potential revival and being forced to pray that the main characters save the world before he dies. That was lame and would make the point of his second life moot if he couldn't do anything with it.
So he trained. He trained and studied and experimented as much as he could. There were limits, both due to his body and due to his resources. His family wasn't starving but they weren't nobility. He couldn't afford any fancy equipment or magic tomes. His greatest resource was in the form of his father who was a member of the Ylissean Militia. The man saw his son as a dedicated and talented child and was very supportive in helping him train properly so that he could reach his full potential. This combined with Alex's own knowledge of modern fitness helped him easily surpass his peers.
While he was still far below the likes of Chrom or Sully, heck even Stahl or Kellam, he could safely say that he was probably superior to any normal NPC his age in terms of sheer fitness and knowledge. He was hailed as a prodigy in his hometown, both for his strength and his intelligence.
Once he was old enough, he joined the Ylissean Militia. This was both to earn income and also to get him closer to the main cast. He figured that if he could make a name for himself in the Militia then it might catch the attention of Chrom or Frederick which could lead to a potential recruitment into the Shepherds. It was the best idea he had at the moment and he still needed money to survive. If he was lucky then he might be able to earn enough to buy some tomes to study.
He served for a few years and during that time he honed his skill in active combat. His father had taught him how to use a spear but Alex also managed to get a grasp on using a sword. Generally, members of the Militia use either one or the other with the majority using spears due to their ease of use.
Finally, all his work culminated together when he found that his next assignment was to be a guard stationed at Southtown. Suddenly, despite having lived in this world for nearly 18 years, things somehow felt more real than it ever had before. There was no news of the Shepherds heading north to Regna Ferox, no news of an impending war with Plegia, no news of a recently recruited tactician. This meant that there was a high probability that the plot would start with him in the first mission at Southtown. He would be there when the main party fought for the first time together. This was perhaps his greatest opportunity to get himself noticed and invited into the main cast.
However, the implications of his near future also became more real than ever before. Southtown would be attacked by Plegians in the near future. Either soldiers disguised as bandits or bandits funded by the desert kingdom. Regardless of which situation it was, the town would be ransacked and burning before the main party arrive. In the games there were no signs of any Ylissean soldiers, which meant that there either weren't any to begin with or they all died. Since Alex was currently stationed at Southtown with four others, including an older veteran acting as their captain, it meant they were likely going to die in the attack.
This was another harsh reminder that he was not a protagonist. He didn't have overpowered stats or skills that would let him fight an entire group of brigands head on and survive. Even among his current squad he was only the second strongest. His new captain has strength and speed slightly below his own, but is more than able to make up for it with his vast experience. If Alex was being generous with himself, he could probably beat one or two bandits before getting taken down by the third, and that was if he fought them one at a time. If they ganged up on him, which they totally would, then even two of them would wipe the floor with him.
So he trained and planned and schemed and did everything he could think of in order to stack the deck in his favor. He encouraged his fellow militiamen to train harder and work on various formations to support each other, he set up traps and hidden supply caches, and he even tried to experiment in building improvised explosives(he had to ditch the explosives idea when he nearly blew himself up and almost set a building on fire).
He had prepared himself and the town as much as he possibly could and with everything-ok he wasn't gonna kid himself. He was monologuing to himself about how he got in his current situation so there was no point in acting like he had a chance. All his plans were moot because he forgot that they had mages. The mages bombarded the town with some spells and the chaos sowed panic in his squad of five. One of the militiamen ran in while swinging his spear wildly and got torn to pieces right away. Another guy tried to run and got blasted by magic. The captain and the final squad member managed to stick together but got overrun by numbers. The only reason Alex survived is because he went to warn the villagers to hide before joining the fray, thinking that the others could hold them off for a few minutes and they could rally together. He managed to get back just in time to see his squad fall to pieces without killing a single brigand.
After that he had managed to keep himself alive while picking off a few of them by using hit and run tactics. Guerilla warfare. He knew the environment better and used that to run and hide, jumping out for sneak attacks before running off again to avoid getting swarmed. Unfortunately, his luck couldn't last and he was now stuck in an open area trying to survive against three guys.
His only saving grace was that they were cowards who were wary thanks to the fact that he managed to land a few cuts early on. They were intimidated and didn't want to commit to a strike unless there was a clear opening.
While Alex was contemplating how sad it was that a technical near lifetime of prep wasn't enough for him to deal with the tutorial level of the main story, a voice cried out from around the corner.
"Hey! Leave him alone!"
Looking over, Alex had conflicting thoughts. First of all, Lissa had come to save the day which meant he managed to survive long enough to get saved by the main characters. This was great. Unfortunately, it was Lissa and he couldn't see anyone else with her. FUCK.
Seeing that he was still in a terrible situation and that he now had the life of a literal princess under his watch, Alex did the only thing he could think of at that moment.
He stabbed one of the distracted brigands while screaming "SELF DEFENSE!".
Hopefully Lissa's first impression of him wouldn't be too bad. One could dream right? Maybe he'd be lucky and Robin would be her female version in this timeline. Happy thoughts Alex, happy thoughts.
AN:
Hey guys, its been awhile... again. Yeah to be fair I do have it noted that updates will be sporadic. This chapter really kicked my butt to write but I hope you guys enjoy it. Like with any of my snippets, if it seems like enough people like it and demand is high enough then I may consider turning it into a full story.
I think part of why these last few chapters have been so hard to write is that I was trying to force myself to make really big chapters despite still getting the hang of things. I'll try to pace myself better and hopefully that will help out.
Until next time, I hope you enjoy-feel free to suggest a series you'd like to see a snippet for!
