Chapter 33: A Betrothal

Regina leaned against the balcony railing, taking a deep breath of late summer air. It felt reinvigorating and she enjoyed having the sun warm her face. She soaked it in, wanting to hold onto the memory when the snows came in a few months and covered Sherwood in beautiful but cold white blankets.

"Room out here for two?" Robin asked, approaching her with his hands clasped behind his back.

"Always," she said, watching as he stepped next to her. He unclasped his hands and covered hers with one.

Robin kissed the side of her head. "Are you alright?"

She nodded, smiling. "I'm just enjoying the weather and the beauty of the country I love so much."

"Sherwood loves you too," he replied. "Remember that. In the coming weeks it may not always seem like it, but the people do love you."

"I will," she said, letting Robin pull her in for a hug. She sank into his embrace, closing her eyes and just enjoying his presence.

He kissed her forehead. "Maybe I'll remind you how much Sherwood loves you tonight."

She chuckled, knowing what he meant. "What about Henry?"

"I don't think it will take much to get my mother to take him for the night," he replied, rubbing her arms.

"No, I imagine not," she agreed. "Though I hope she doesn't mind that we're asking her to take him again."

He frowned. "That was a few weeks ago, darling. I don't think we're in danger of encroaching on my mother's good will."

She nodded, knowing he had a good point. Regina still bit her lip. "I just worry, you know?"

"I know," he replied, rubbing her arms. "Your mother…well…she certainly didn't seem like a shining example of unconditional love."

"No," Regina agreed. "She wasn't."

He shook his head. "You deserved so much better."

"Well, I have it now," she told him, pressing her forehead to his as she hoped he knew how much he had changed her life.

"And you will always have it as long as I have breath in my body," he vowed, making her insides melt.

Someone cleared their throat and they looked over, finding Uncle Joseph standing there. He smirked at them. "Supper has been served if you two would care to join us."

"We'll be right in," Robin said. "Thank you."

He then turned to Regina, holding out his arm to her. "Shall we?"

"We shall," she said, taking his arm and letting him lead her back into the room where their family sat around the table to enjoy the evening meal together.

"Ahh, here they are," Aunt Eleanor said, teasing them. "Thank you for joining us."

Robin pulled a chair out for Regina as he gave his aunt a look. "I doubt you were waiting very long for us."

"We weren't," Catherine assured them. "Everyone is just teasing you."

Uncle Joseph shot her a look. "Spoilsport."

"I think they are going to have some difficult times coming up," she replied. "We can go a little easier on them."

"Thank you, Mother," Robin replied, taking his own seat. He looked around the table. "Well, we're here. Let's eat."

Will reached for the food as Ana rolled her eyes. "Don't have to tell me twice."

Regina placed a pheasant on her plate and scooped some potatoes before moving toward the vegetables. "Everything looks so delicious. The kitchens outdid themselves today," she said.

"I think it's because the harvests are coming in," Catherine replied. "The festival will be soon."

"Oh!" Regina exclaimed, happy about that. "I'd love to experience the festival when I'm not sick."

Robin paused next to her before chuckling. "I almost forgot we learned you were expecting Henry during the festival last year."

They both looked over to where their son slept soundly in his cradle, wrapped in a blanket. Love filled Regina and she sighed happily. "It was one of the happiest days of my life. I just wish I hadn't been so sick. I never really got a chance to enjoy the festival."

"That is true," he said, taking her hand and giving it a squeeze. "I promise we shall spend as much time as possible there this year so you can really get a chance to experience it."

Joy and excitement filled her as she recalled everything she had heard about the festival but had not been able to experience for herself the year before. "I'll be able to support you in person this year during the feats of strength."

"Yes, you will," he said. "I think I will do even better this year with you there to cheer me on as I compete."

"Ahh, to be young again," Uncle Joseph mused, sipping his wine as he leaned back in his chair. His eyes shone with mirth.

His wife rolled her eyes. "You are not that old."

"Well, I'm certainly not the generation competing in the feats of strength anymore," he replied.

"No, you're not," she agreed, patting his hand. "But you're still young where it matters, at least to me."

Ella made a face. "Can you two please do this away from us?"

Aunt Eleanor chuckled, shaking her head. "Absolutely not. We're allowed to be just as lovey-dovey as your uncle was with your aunt."

"And we have to show your cousin and your sister how it's properly done for their spouses' sakes," Uncle Joseph said, winking at Regina.

She chuckled, taking her husband's hand again. "I don't think Robin has any trouble speaking from his heart."

"Not when it comes to Regina," he replied, leaning down to kiss her cheek.

"Robin is certainly Edward's son," Catherine said, sipping her wine. She smiled sadly. "I wish he were here to see how happy you two are."

Regina squeezed Robin's hand comfortingly as she said: "I wish he was here too. I would've loved to have met him."

Catherine reached out and patted her free hand. "He would've loved you. And he probably would've keep hogging little Henry. He would've been so proud of him and doted on him from the moment he was born."

"That is true," Aunt Eleanor agreed. "He was just like that with Robin, Ana and Ella."

"He was a devoted father and uncle," Uncle Joseph said. "He just loved children, honestly. The way I've seen them flock to Regina reminds me of how they used to flock to him."

Regina felt her cheeks heat up and she grew sheepish under their compliments. "That is sweet of you to say."

"It's the truth," Catherine told her. "I've thought so as well whenever I've watched you with children."

"Robin is also good with children," she said as her husband kissed the side of her head.

He then pulled back, rubbing her back. "Yes, but not in the same way you are. You've always been a natural with them."

Daddy sighed, sipping his wine. "I've always regretted your mother's decision to keep you away from the other children because I could tell you were a charismatic and sweet child. Thankfully, she was unable to stomp them from you."

"Why would she have wanted to stomp them from her?" Ella asked, frowning in confusion. "I would think she would want Regina to be charismatic and sweet if she wanted her to be queen."

"That wasn't the kind of queen my wife wanted Regina to be," Daddy replied, a dark look filling his eyes. "Cora wanted her to be ruthless and to crush those Cora believed had wronged her when she was younger."

Regina swallowed, trying not to think of the miserable life she would've had if her mother had gotten her way. Beside her, Robin once again squeezed her hand as he said: "Regina's loving heart was too strong for her to crush."

"Yes," Daddy said, smiling. "I agree. Her heart was just too resilient to succumb to her mother's plots."

"Can we talk about anyone else?" she asked, feeling as if her face was on fire. "I don't think I can take any more compliments."

Everyone chuckled as someone knocked on the door. Silence fell over the room and Regina felt Robin tense as he stood. He nodded at Will, who stood and crossed to the door. They watched as Will opened it and John stepped into the room.

"I apologize for interrupting your meal," he said, bowing. "But there are visitors in the courtyard."

Regina looked up at Robin, who was frowning. She knew he had to be worried that the Ellises and Nottingham had sent allies of some sort to make trouble for them. "What kind of visitors?" he asked John.

"Dignitaries from an ally," John replied. He glanced at Ella as he said: "A Prince Thomas is with them."

Everyone looked at Ella and her eyes widened. "Prince Thomas? He's here?"

"Please send Prince Thomas here," Robin said, trying to sound official but unable to hide his amusement. John bowed and left the room.

Once the door closed, Ella jumped up with wide eyes. Her hands flew to her hair, which was pinned up into a bun. "How do I look? Should I take my hair down? Is it fine? Should I change my dress?"

"You look beautiful, Ella," Regina said, standing and moving toward Robin's cousin as Ana stood as well. "Just relax."

"Let's sit back down and wait for him to come," Aunt Eleanor said, easing Ella back into her chair. "Robin should be the only one standing."

Robin chuckled as he moved toward the door. "Am I allowed to interrogate him before I let him anywhere near Ella?"

"Please don't embarrass me," Ella pleaded with her cousin. "And don't treat him any differently because of me."

Regina placed her hand on her husband's arm. "I think Ella has a point. Besides, we should figure out his intentions before we start any interrogations."

He nodded, picking up her hand and kissing the back of it. "You are very wise, as always, milady."

"Prince Thomas has a high bar to reach with Ella after growing up around the men in this family," Will joked, taking Ana's hand in his. "Good luck to him."

Ella groaned as the door opened. John escorted in a young blond man wearing a gold jacket paired with dark pants. "May I present His Royal Highness, Prince Thomas of Lavon," John announced.

Prince Thomas stepped forward and bowed. "Your Majesties. I apologize for arriving with no notice and hope you will welcome me."

"You are welcome, Prince Thomas," Robin said. "We are honored to have you here."

"Are you hungry? We can have a plate brought up and would be honored if you join us for the evening meal," Regina said, motioning to the table behind them.

The prince glanced at it, hesitating as he no doubt debated whether the proper thing to do was accept or decline. Finally, he said: "I have already inconvenienced you. I do not wish to do so further."

"It would not be an inconvenience, I assure you," Regina told him gently, hoping to ease his mind.

"That is kind of you to say," he replied, "but I think it is best that I take my leave for now."

She nodded, squeezing Robin's arm when she sensed he was about to continue pressing the young prince. "Of course. You must also be tired after your journey. We shall have rooms prepared for you and your guests so you can rest. You are invited to join us for the noon meal tomorrow."

Prince Thomas bowed. "I thank you for your invitation and happily accept it."

"Wonderful," Robin said. He looked to John. "Please escort Prince Thomas to his rooms"

"Yes, Your Majesty," John said, bowing as well. He then turned to the prince. "Please follow me, Your Highness."

Prince Thomas bowed again. "I apologize again for interrupting your meal and thank you for hospitality. Good evening."

He left the room with John and Robin stepped forward, closing the door behind them. Turning back to the table, he had a big smile as he said: "Well, he's very charming, Ella, and very handsome."

"Please, stop, Robin," she pleaded, her cheeks red as she buried her head in her hands. "He didn't even acknowledge me."

Anastasia leaned toward her sister, rubbing her back. "He's following proper etiquette. It would be rude to ignore Robin and Regina and just talk to you."

"His eyes were going toward you," Regina assured Ella, stepping closer to her friend. "I saw it. He wanted to talk to you but needed to follow etiquette, just like Ana said."

Ella slowly lowered her hands, a hopeful look in her eyes. "You mean it?"

Regina nodded, hoping to reassure Ella and keep that hope alive. "After all, if he's here to see you, he would want to take special care not to insult your family."

"Especially when your cousin is the king and has an army at his disposal," Robin said, placing his hand on Regina's shoulder. "I can sic them on him."

"Don't you dare!" Ella snapped, glaring at him.

Robin held up his hands, still smiling. "I won't. Don't worry. I don't want to start a war with his country."

"Just be patient," Aunt Eleanor assured her daughter. "He'll come talk to you soon. I just know it."

"Alright," Ella said, taking a deep breath. "I'll be patient."

Anastasia gave her a hug. "The fact he's here is a promising sign. I think you're going to get some good news before he leaves."

"If not, once again, armed soldiers at my disposal," Robin reminded her with a wink. That earned a chuckle from Ella and she thanked him.

He then helped Regina up and escorted her back to her seat. As he sat down, he clapped his hands. "So, shall we continue eating?"

Everyone turned back to their meal as Regina exchanged a small smile with Robin. Prince Thomas' visit was going to be an exciting one, she could tell. And she just hoped it ended happily for everyone involved – especially Ella.

"Do you think Prince Thomas is here to ask for Ella's hand in marriage?" Robin asked, helping Regina out of her dress that night.

She glanced over her shoulder at him. "I would be very surprised if he wasn't. Will your aunt and uncle give their blessing?"

"I believe they will," Robin replied. "It is clear Ella cares for him. Though he does have to explain why he hasn't written to her in some time."

"Agreed," Regina said. "I hope he has a very good explanation though I believe Ella would forgive him anything."

He hummed in agreement as he helped her out of her dress. "But that's why we are here. We can ensure she is treated the way she deserves."

She wrapped her arms around his neck, nodding. "Absolutely. I hope it all works out for them and they are as happy as we are."

"Here, here," he replied, grinning. He then pressed his forehead to hers and they stood there, just breathing each other in.

Soft mews interrupted their moment and Regina pulled away, looking at the crib. Love filled her as she approached it, looking down at a fussy Henry. She picked him up and rubbed his back. "Feeling lonely, sweetheart? Don't worry. Mama and Papa are here," she assured him.

Henry cuddled against her as Robin stepped closer, kissing their son's head. "I think this calls for a good family cuddle in bed," he said.

"I agree," she replied. "Why don't you stoke the fire and then we can all cuddle together?"

He gave her a silly grin as he bowed. "Whatever my queen wants."

"Papa is silly, Henry," Regina told their son, smiling fondly at her husband's antics before climbing into bed.

After stoking the fire, Robin climbed into bed with her and curled around their son as Henry lay between them. He rubbed the boy's stomach. "Feel better now, my boy?" he asked.

"I think he does," Regina said, listening as Henry laughed and kicked his feet. "He has his family around him."

They laid there, watching Henry amuse himself with his feet and Regina never felt more at peace. Robin reached out and played with her hair, wrapping one of her curls around his finger. "I love your curls," he said.

"I'm starting to love them again too," she admitted. She looked down at Henry. "Do you think he'll have curly hair?"

"Probably not," Robin replied, gently running his hand over their son's brown hair. "It looks like he inherited my straight hair. But I think one of our children will have your curls."

She smiled, thinking of having another child. "I would love to have another baby. Just not right away."

"I feel the same. Even with all the help we can have, juggling two babies seems to be pretty stressful," Robin replied. "I admire parents with twins for being able to care for both."

"Same," Regina agreed, rubbing Henry's stomach. "We definitely have our hands full with this one."

Robin nodded. "And he's not even walking yet."

She chuckled, imagining everyone chasing around her husband when he was only months older than Henry as he ran through the palace. Biting her lip, she asked: "Were you a terror when you started walking?"

"Probably," he said. "Mother could probably answer that better."

"Then I'll ask her tomorrow. There are probably a lot of stories she can tell me about you," Regina told him.

He nodded. "Absolutely. She loves telling stories about me when I was younger. The more embarrassing, the better."

"Oh, I can only imagine," Regina said, laughing as she thought of some of the stories Catherine had already told her. She then looked down at Henry, who grinned up at her. It melted her heart and she let him grab her finger with his tiny hand. "I can't wait to share stories about Henry."

"Neither can I," Robin agreed. "We're probably going to have many."

Henry yawned, making her heart melt. Regina rubbed his stomach. "Getting sleepy, my little prince? Maybe a lullaby will help?"

"You just want to hear me sing," Robin teased her.

"Maybe," she replied, loving to hear his voice. "Please? For me and Henry?"

He chuckled, nodding. "How can I deny the two people I love the most?"

Warmth spread through her as she leaned forward, kissing him. "We love you too," she whispered.

"You always know how to soften me up," he replied. He then looked down at Henry, placing his hand on the boy's stomach. "Alright, my boy, one lullaby, just for you and your mother."

Regina laid her head down on the pillow as Robin started to sing. Her own eyes closed and she let his voice wash over her, feeling like a blanket. She felt her body relax, knowing she was safe and could let herself be vulnerable enough to sleep.

She hoped that one day Ella had a moment like this with Prince Thomas and their own family.

"Ella, are you alright?" Regina asked, concerned over how the pale Robin's cousin looked at breakfast the next morning. "Are you ill?"

Ella shook her head. "I hardly slept. I couldn't stop thinking about why Thomas is here and what it means."

Regina took her hands. "You need to take care of yourself. Worrying won't solve anything."

"She's right," Ana told her sister, gently grabbing her arm and pulling her down in a nearby chair. "Sit and eat at least, alright?"

Ella sat down and nodded. "Alright. I'll eat."

"Good," Aunt Eleanor said, placing a bowl of porridge in front of her daughter. "There's cream and sugar on the table if you want."

Robin joined them at the table, rocking Henry. "Good morning, everyone."

"Good morning, sweetheart," Catherine said, kissing her son's cheek before rubbing Henry's foot. "And good morning to you too."

"Henry says good morning as well," Robin replied, patting his son's back. "So what's for breakfast?"

Will raised an eyebrow. "Is Henry asking or are you?"

Robin shot him a look. "Henry's eaten so I am."

"Ahh, then we're having some eggs and sausage as well as porridge for breakfast this morning," Will replied, pushing the platter closer to Robin. "A good, hearty meal for a lovely autumn day."

"Thank you for that wonderful review," Robin said, placing some sausages on his plate with one hand while cradling Henry in the other arm. "Anything else?"

Will shrugged. "Not right now but I can always poke around to find out what's for the midday meal and give you my review of it then."

"Sounds good," Robin said, letting Tink take Henry so he could eat. He picked up his coffee and took a sip. "Regina, can you let the kitchens know that Prince Thomas will be joining us for the midday meal, please?"

"Of course," she replied, turning to Ella. "Maybe you can help me put together a menu? I am not familiar with the cuisine from his country."

Ella looked up from her meal, her eyes wide. "I would love to help you put together a menu. Thank you."

"No, thank you," Regina told her, hoping she would be able to cheer her friend up and take her mind off the prince visiting them. "I appreciate your help."

"Maybe we can also plan a special dinner for him as well!" Ella suggested, perking up even more. "Maybe we can have a ball!"

Regina worried she was going a little overboard and she reached out, taking Ella's hand. "While balls are lovely, don't forget we have the Harvest Festival coming up soon. We have to plan for that ball as well. I don't think it would be fair to the staff to have two balls back-to-back."

Ella's face fell as Regina squeezed her hand. "I'm certain we can include him in the Harvest Ball even if we can't throw him his own ball."

"He is a visiting dignitary," Aunt Eleanor told her daughter. "He will be given a place of honor."

"I can also make certain you two are sitting next to each other," Regina replied, winking at Ella. She then thought about how Thomas' talk with Robin could go the opposite way before adding: "Or keep you two far apart. Whatever you want."

Ella laughed. "Thank you, I appreciate that."

"You're welcome," Regina said. "Thanks to your aunt, I know how to diplomatically arrange seating now."

Catherine chuckled. "Happy to help. Though you were a very good student and understood it very quickly."

Henry let out a little cry and it drew everyone's attention back to him. Robin chuckled, rocking him. "Are you upset because no one is complimenting you, my boy? You are a very good student too."

"Yes, you are," Regina said, gently rubbing her son's stomach as he gurgled. He definitely seemed happier now that they were paying attention to him again.

"Look at the power this little boy has already," Will said, smiling fondly. "He can get a whole room to look at him just with one sound."

Catherine chuckled. "He gets that from his father. Robin also liked to have the attention on him when he was a baby."

"That's because he was the only baby in the family for a long time," Aunt Eleanor said. "It was easy to get our attention when he was the only one crying and cooing for it."

Uncle Joseph nodded. "Then Ana came along and gave him a little competition."

"He's been bitter about it ever since," Aunt Eleanor replied, shaking her head.

Robin made an indignant noise, looking up from Henry with his mouth hanging open. "I have not!"

"He's deeply in denial," Uncle Joseph said, sighing as everyone else tried not to laugh. Regina hid hers behind her hand, wanting to remain supportive of her husband but enjoying the joke, even if it was at his expense.

"Then what about me?" Ella asked, her eyes sparkling as she got in on the joke as well.

Robin huffed. "I have loved having you and Ana as my cousins. You are pretty much my sisters."

"And you're our brother," Ana agreed. "Sibling rivalry is part of the package, you know?"

He glanced at Regina, who shrugged. "Don't ask me. I'm an only child."

"Take from me as I had two brothers," Aunt Eleanor said. "It is part of package as long as it doesn't go too far."

"I agree," Daddy said. "My brothers and I used to fight all the time and compete against each other, even if just in our own minds."

"Brothers? How many do you have?" Ella asked, intrigued.

"Eleven," Daddy replied. "I was the baby and didn't expect to inherit much."

Regina frowned. Her father never spoke much about his siblings and they never really saw his side of the family. She always wondered if Mother had been the reason why they never visited – Mother did not like many people and Regina imagined her father's family was as loving and warm as him, the exact opposite of her.

"Why didn't we ever see them?" she asked, confused. "How did we end up in Mist Haven?"

"Because of your grandfather and in a way, your mother," Daddy answered, looking at her now.

Regina frowned, feeling even more confused now. "What do you mean by that? Did my grandfather and Mother get into a fight?"

He shook his head. "Not at all. They actually got along very well. I think he preferred her to almost everyone else in our family."

"Oh," she said, surprised. No one ever seemed to like her mother and it didn't make anything clearer about why they were estranged from her father's family.

"Why don't we talk about this after dinner?" Daddy suggested softly. "I'll answer all your questions then."

Regina nodded, turning back to her meal as questions swirled around her head. She wished she had asked her father about his family before now though she didn't know if she would've gotten the truth with her mother around. Even if her grandfather had liked Mother, Daddy had said she was involved in his estrangement from his brothers. What had she done? And why had Daddy allowed it?

She just didn't know how she would get through the rest of the day with all those questions swirling around her head.

"How are you?" Robin asked, rubbing her arms once he stepped into their bedroom that evening.

"Confused," she replied, leaning against him. "I can't stop thinking about what my father said and feeling guilty for never asking him about his family before."

He held her close as he kissed the top of her head. "You probably never had any reason to ask before. And he never told you. So how would you know?"

"I know," she said, resting her chin on his shoulder as he swayed with her. "But I still feel like I've been selfish by not asking about him."

"You haven't been selfish," he assured her, kissing the side of her head. "And even if you were, you have a chance to change that. You have the chance to start asking him questions and find out what you want to know or need to know."

She nodded, knowing he was right. "I love how you always know what I need to hear."

"It's either a gift or sheer dumb luck," he said, pulling away from her. "I'm not entirely certain which."

"I'd say a gift," she told him, kissing his cheek. "And that is why you were meant to be my husband."

He grinned. "Meant to be. I like that."

She moved away from him as she asked: "Do you think Prince Thomas and Ella are meant to be?"

"I think so," Robin said. "He and I had a good talk this afternoon and it seems like he does truly care about my cousin. I did give him a bit of a hard time about not contacting her for some time but it seems the storms blew the mail ships off course and sunk one. That is why he is here."

"To grovel and ask for her forgiveness?" Regina asked, sitting down on their bed as she watched her husband stoke their fire.

He nodded. "Partly. And to also reinforce our alliance as he worried important dispatches hadn't gotten to us, which they hadn't. He and his father worried they've insulted their allies, including us."

"Oh," she replied. "You weren't insulted, right?"

"Not really," he said, sitting next to her. "I didn't notice I hadn't gotten any correspondence. There were other things for me to worry about."

He paused and she knew he meant the aftermath of Henry's birth when she was caught in the Dark One's spell as well as the fallout from catching Keith. She nodded. "Yes, I supposed there were," she agreed.

"I think Thomas is more relaxed now that he knows our relationship with his country is still strong," Robin replied. "But if he does marry Ella, it could be stronger."

"True," Regina said. "How do you think Ella would do leaving Sherwood and your family?"

Robin shrugged. "Honestly, I don't know. And I don't think Ella has thought about that yet either. That might be the only reason she decides not to marry him."

"Well, I can attest that sometimes the best thing to do is leave and find your home elsewhere," she said, pressing her forehead to his. "As well as love."

He chuckled before turning solemn. "True. I wouldn't want her to give up a chance at happiness and love because she's scared to leave home. However, I also worry that she may be miserable and feel trapped."

"Miserable and trapped? How?" Regina asked, confused.

"Well, I see two scenarios," he replied. "The first is that she and Thomas get married but then realize they were just caught up in the fantasy of love and had really only been infatuated with each other. I wouldn't want my cousin to think she had to stay in a loveless marriage because she couldn't come home."

Regina nodded, wondering what would've happened if she and Robin hadn't made a connection. Would she and Daddy have returned to Mist Haven? Or would they have gone to Basque and sought refuge with her uncle? Maybe they would've stayed in Sherwood but where? She decided it was just another reason she was glad she and Robin had fallen in love with each other and had a good marriage.

"And the other scenario?" she asked.

"She and Thomas have a loving marriage but she is so homesick she can't be happy," Robin said. "I wouldn't her to once again feel can't come home because of that either."

Regina tilted her head, taking his hand. "I think as long as you and your family continue to support her and make it known that she can always turn to you if she needs help, then I think she will be fine."

"I'll talk with the others," Robin said, "and I will do that. I'll let her know I'm willing to send in the army if need be to rescue her."

"Let's hope it doesn't come to that," she replied, chuckling. She took her husband's hand. "I think you're overthinking this a bit. I know it's born from the love you have for your cousin but you need to trust her to understand her own heart."

He nodded, sighing. "I know, I know."

She kissed his cheek. "But Ella is lucky to have a cousin who loves her so much and cares so deeply about her."

"Thank you," he replied. He then tilted his head. "Maybe you can talk to her too?"

"Of course," she said, nodding. "I can probably give her some perspective about leaving your home to go live in another country."

Robin looked relieved before frowning. "Do you ever regret leaving Mist Haven?"

She shook her head. "Of course not."

"And do you miss it?" he asked.

"No," she replied honestly. "I miss Snow but I don't miss living in Mist Haven. Sherwood feels more like home than it ever did and I am far happier here than I ever was there."

His smile grew bigger and his blue eyes sparkled. Robin pressed his hand to his heart. "I am really glad to hear that. I would hate to think that even a small part of you was miserable here in Sherwood."

She took his face in both her hands and shook her head. "Not even a small part. I am completely, totally happy here in Sherwood."

"Good," he said, leaning forward to kiss her. She wrapped her arms around him as they fell onto the bed together, never breaking their kiss until they couldn't breathe.

They lay there, wrapped around each other. Robin pressed his forehead to hers, his eyes closed. "I am so lucky that you came to Sherwood and agreed to be my bride."

"I'm just as lucky," she replied, kissing the end of his nose. "And I hope Thomas and Ella are just as lucky as us."

He nodded. "Me too. For then they will be immeasurably happy."

"Indeed," she agreed, curling against him as he held her. They laid on their bed, just breathing each other in.

"Do we need to go to dinner?" he asked, eyes closed. "I'd much rather stay here like this all night."

She sighed. "Me too. But I think everyone will notice if the king and queen are absent from dinner with a visiting prince."

"True," he said. "So we have to go."

"I'm afraid so."

He nodded, standing. Robin held out his hand to her. "Milady?"

"Thank you," she said, letting him help her up. "Do you want to help me choose my dress for dinner?"

"Only if I get to take it off after dinner," he replied with a cheeky grin.

She laughed, nodding. "Deal."

"Good," he said, pulling her close. "I love you, Regina."

"I love you too, Robin," she replied, wrapping her arms around his neck. He kissed her again and she let her eyes close, once again considering herself the luckiest woman in all of Sherwood.

Maybe the entire world.

"Regina, you wanted to see me?" Ella stood in front of the doors to the royal chambers, her hands clasped as she watched Regina.

Smiling, Regina patted a spot next to her on the couch. "I thought we could talk."

Ella approached, looking hesitant. "About Thomas?"

"Yes," Regina replied. "Robin and I agree we can't tell you what to do. You need to listen to your heart. But we want your heart to understand as much as possible. I believe I can give you a unique perspective on this."

"Because you left your home country to marry?" Ella asked her as she sat down.

Regina nodded. "Exactly."

"Do…do you miss it? Regret coming to Sherwood?" Ella asked, sounding just like her cousin in that moment.

"No," Regina replied. "But I am also different. I never really felt at home in Mist Haven and I know that's different for you."

Ella nodded. "Sherwood is the only home I've ever known. I do worry I will miss it terribly if I marry Thomas."

"Robin and I worry about that as well," Regina told her. "I know you had just returned from visiting his country when I arrived in Sherwood. How did you feel while you were there then?"

"I enjoyed being there," Ella replied, smiling fondly. "It reminded me a lot of Sherwood as everyone there welcomed me and treated me like I was one of them."

Relief filled Regina. "That's wonderful."

Ella nodded before her smile fell. "Of course, I was just a guest then. It could be different if I show up as their future queen."

"Do you feel they would be hostile to a foreign queen?" Regina asked, not wanting Ella to have to deal with the suspicions and hatred she had after arriving in Sherwood.

"I honestly don't know," she replied. "And I'm scared."

Regina nodded, knowing Ella had watched how Sherwood had received her and no doubt feared something similar. "It's understandable. Your cousin understood that I would likely receive a rather cold welcome. Perhaps that is a conversation you should have with Thomas."

"I think I need to have a lot of conversations with him," Ella said. "Of course, this is assuming he wants to ask me to marry him."

"True, but I think he does," Regina told her.

Ella smiled. "I do too."

"I think you have a good head on your shoulders," Regina said. "And I think you're asking the right questions, thinking about the right things."

"Thank you, Regina," Ella replied. "That means a lot."

Regina nodded. "Just don't let fear hold you back from true happiness. Do you think you can do that?"

"I think so," Ella said.

"Good," Regina replied, standing. "You know you can always come to me if you need someone to talk to, right?"

Ella nodded as she stood. "I do."

She then hugged Regina, who held the younger woman close. "I know I haven't been part of this family long but I know one thing – you will always be part of it no matter where you go."

"I will remember that," Ella said. "And if I leave, I will carry all of you in my heart."

They pulled away and Regina took Ella's hands again. "How do you feel?"

"I'm still confused but I feel better than I did this morning," Ella assured her. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Regina said. "And I'm always here if you need someone to talk to."

Ella nodded. "I know. You're the best, Regina."

Joy spread through Regina as she looped her arm with Ella. "I'm just happy to help. You are my family now and family helps each other."

"Yes, indeed," Ella said as they walked out of the room. Regina felt better, certain Ella was on the right path no matter which she chose.

"Prince Thomas asked me for permission to marry Ella," Robin said, entering their chambers that evening.

Regina looked up from Henry as he nursed, tilting her head. "Shouldn't he ask your uncle?"

"Since he is a foreign prince and this would essentially be an alliance between our countries, he needs my permission first before he can ask for my uncle's," Robin explained, smiling down at their son before pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I needed to get King Leopold's permission to ask for your hand."

"Right," Regina said, recalling that moment with King Leopold and Robin's Uncle Alexander. It felt like a lifetime ago.

She then turned her focus back to Robin. "Did you give him your permission?"

"Not yet," he replied, sitting down next to her. "I told him I wanted to talk with Ella first."

"Understandable," she said. "I spoke with her this afternoon."

Robin moved closer to her, interest in his eyes. "And?"

"And I think she has a good head on her shoulders. She hasn't been caught up in a rush of romance and is asking herself very good questions," Regina assured him. "I think her heart is made up but she just has to bring her head in line with the decision. Once she does, I know she will be happy but you can always assure her she can come home again."

"Of course," he said. "I will go get her myself if need be."

She chuckled, knowing Robin would go that. Regina kissed his cheek as she said: "I don't think it will come to that."

"I hope not," he replied. "I just want Ella to be as happy as us and Ana and Will."

"I know," she said, squeezing his hand. "I want the same."

He grinned, leaning forward to kiss her. "I love you."

"I love you too," she replied, patting his knee. "Come on. We need to get ready for dinner."

She started to stand but he took her hand, pulling her back down. He grinned. "We have a few minutes."

"Not for what you're clearly thinking," she said, seeing the lust in his eyes. "We definitely need more than a few minutes for that."

He chuckled. "I suppose so. But we could have a little preview, right?"

"Emphasis on little," she reminded him. But she wrapped her arms around his neck. "But yes."

"I thought you would say that," he said, kissing her. She kissed him back, falling back onto the bed with him. They lay there, exchanging a few more kisses before Regina reluctantly pulled away.

She rubbed her nose against his. "Preview's over."

"Hmm," he said. "Good thing we'll have all night later."

"Yes," she replied, patting his arm. "But you probably shouldn't be thinking about that around your family."

He sighed. "You're probably right."

"Now, help me pick out a dress to wear," she said, moving toward her wardrobe. She opened it and looked through them.

Robin came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her. "You look beautiful in all of them. But it's just dinner with my family. No need to worry."

"I still would like to show up in a nice dress," she told him. "Green or blue?"

"Ooh," he said. She tilted her head back to see his eyes were narrowed in concentration. "We're always partial to green here in Sherwood but you look absolutely divine in blue…"

She chuckled, pulling out the blue dress. "Then blue it is."

He released her, heading over to his own wardrobe. "I shall wear blue as well so we can match."

Rather than calling for servants, they dressed together. As Robin tightened the laces on the blue dress he recommended for her, Regina felt a wave of happiness wash over her. She knew that Ella and Thomas were no doubt enjoying the rush of first love but she couldn't wait for them to experience this stage of love – where they were so comfortable with each other, they shared their love in small but meaningful actions.

She believed this was her favorite stage.

After Robin finished dressing, she tugged on his blue silk coat and gave him a quick kiss. "I love you," she said.

"I love you too," he replied, stepping back to offer her his arm. "Shall we, milady?"

"We shall," she said, taking his arm. Smiling, she added: "My king."

He paused, frowning. "I'm still not fond of that pet name. We are equals."

"I know," she said, wondering what else she could call him. "What do you prefer?"

"I don't know," he replied, rubbing his chin. "Perhaps we could try a few other names and see what works best for both of us?"

She nodded, amused by how seriously he was taking this. "We can do that."

Relief passed through his eyes and he leaned forward, giving her a gentle kiss. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," she said. She then added: "Milord?"

He scrunched up his nose, shaking his head. "We're going to have a lot of trial and error."

"We are," she agreed. "I think it'll be fun."

"That's one way to look at it," he said, opening the bedroom door. They stepped out and found their family waiting for them in their sitting room. Catherine rocked little Henry while Regina's father poured everyone some drinks.

Will grinned at them. "We were wondering if you two were ever coming out or would just spend the rest of the night together in your room."

"That second option is still very tempting," Robin replied. "We could always just do that."

Regina playfully swatted him. "Don't be rude."

"Yes, dear," he said, winking at her as he let out a weary sigh.

Henry chuckled, handing them both glasses. "Don't let them get to you. I have no doubt Will would be the same with Ana if we were in their rooms."

Robin nodded. "Excellent observation."

"Oi," Will said indignantly. "How did this get turned back on me?"

Beside him, Ana patted his hand before saying: "You did start it, dear."

He sighed as Tink approached Regina. "Do you want the kitchens to send up the meal now or wait some longer?"

"No, I think we can have it now," she replied. "Thank you, Tink."

"You're welcome," Tink said, curtsying. She then approached the far corner of the room to slip into the servant's corridor.

Robin kissed her hand before slipping his arm from hers. "I want to talk to my cousin before we eat."

She nodded, stepping back. "Go ahead. One of us will come get you."

"Thank you," he said, approaching Ella. He held out his arm to her. "Can we talk for a few moments?"

"Of course," Ella said, standing and taking his arm. They walked toward the balcony door and everyone watched them step outside, closing the door behind them.

Aunt Eleanor took her husband's hand. "What do you think they are talking about?"

"I think I have a good suspicion," Uncle Joseph said. "Prince Thomas did spend a good amount of time with Robin this afternoon and I would bet they weren't talking about trades and political alliances the entire time."

Regina nodded. "I can tell you that you are right."

"Then I suppose I should except a visit from Prince Thomas next," he replied, stroking his graying beard with a soft smile.

"Perhaps," she said, motioning to the balcony with her glass. "Depends how that conversation goes."

He nodded. "That is true."

Catherine approached with a fussy Henry. "I think someone wants his mother," she said.

"I think so as well," Regina replied, setting her glass down. She then took Henry from his grandmother and rocked him. "What do you need, sweetheart?"

He pressed his head against her shoulder, letting out a little yawn as he clasped onto her dress. She chuckled, rubbing his back. "I think he's sleepy."

"Or just wants a good cuddle," Daddy said, smiling. "You liked to cuddle when you were his age too. We used to just sit around and you would snuggled right in the nook of my neck. I loved it."

She smiled, her heart swelling as she heard the love in Daddy's voice. "I no doubt loved it too."

Catherine chuckled. "Robin always loved cuddling with his father. Edward could just sit there for hours with Robin sleeping on his chest. It was one of his favorite things."

Warmth spread through Regina as she thought of Robin sitting on the couch with Henry. Though she never got to meet her father-in-law, she had seen paintings and knew that Robin heavily favored him. So it was not a stretch to imagine Edward as he cuddled with baby Robin, reading papers or humming softly to his beloved son.

Servants entered the room, carrying trays of food. Regina kissed Henry's head as her stomach growled and she moved toward his cradle. "We'll cuddle later, sweetheart. Right now, Mama needs to eat," she told him.

Henry cooed as she laid him in the cradle, apparently content now. She gently rubbed his belly, telling him she loved him before walking away from the cradle. Regina motioned to the balcony. "Can someone tell Robin and Ella the food is ready?"

"No need," Robin said, holding the door open so Ella could enter the room first. "We're done."

Aunt Eleanor stopped on her way to the table, studying the two. "All good?"

Robin nodded, closing the door behind him. "We had a good talk and I think Ella has a lot to think about tonight."

"I do," Ella agreed, looking at her family. "I would love your opinions as well before I make my decision."

Aunt Eleanor hugged her daughter. "Of course. And we'll support you no matter what you decide."

"We will always support you," Ana assured her sister. "No matter what."

Catherine wrapped her arm around her niece. "That's what family is for. And no matter what, you will always be part of this family."

"Thank you, Aunt Catherine," Ella said, hugging her. "I love you all."

Robin clapped his hands. "Now, let's enjoy this amazing meal and a nice evening together, hmm?"

"Sounds good to me," Uncle Joseph said, pulling out a chair and holding his hand out to Aunt Eleanor. "For you, my dear."

She smiled as she took his hand, sinking into her chair. "Thank you."

"Milady?" Robin held out his hand to Regina. She took it and let him help her into her chair. He pushed her in before turning to his mother. But Daddy was helping Catherine, so Robin was able to take his seat beside Regina.

Once everyone was seated, Robin squeezed Regina's hand. She recognized the signal and nodded, motioning to the food. "Everyone, enjoy!"

They started to help themselves and Regina happily took a Cornish hen when the platter was passed by her. She reached for some potatoes as Ella did, their hands almost colliding. Ella pulled back, giggling. "Sorry, Regina."

"That's all right," Regina assured her, scooping some potatoes onto her plate before handing the spoon to Ella. "Why don't you tell us more about the food in Prince Thomas' country?"

Robin nodded, handing her a bowl of mixed vegetables. "I am curious myself."

Ella happily explained the different foods she had eaten in Lavon while Ana interjected every so often. Given Lavon's proximity to the sea, Regina was not surprised to discover most were seafood of some sort. Some sounded familiar to dishes they served in Mist Haven while a few sounded rather off-putting, including the fact they ate squid. She shivered as she thought of all those legs and wondered out loud how it was possible to eat them.

"I don't know," Ella admitted. "Neither Ana nor I dared try it. Maybe one I will but I don't think it will be anytime soon."

"I think would try it," Robin said, rubbing his chin. "I'm always willing to try something once."

Regina chuckled as she sipped her wine. "Then I will happily leave that up to you. I trust your judgment."

He beamed at her. "I am glad to hear that."

"Besides, I also love a reason to steal food from your plate," she said, quickly reaching over and taking a potato from his plate. She popped it into her mouth and smiled as she chewed it.

Robin's mouth hung open in surprise before he let out an indignant cry of "Thief!"

She shrugged. "You love me."

"I do," he said, his expression softening as he kissed her cheek. "Very much."

"Some of us are trying to eat," Will said, reminding them that they were not alone. Regina turned to him as he raised his eyebrow. "You can be mushy on your own time."

Robin shook his head. "I'm sorry, Ana, that your husband doesn't have a romantic bone in his body."

Will rolled his eyes. "I have plenty of romance in me. I am a normal amount of romantic. You take it to another level."

"He got that from Uncle Edward," Ana said fondly.

"I definitely hear his father when he's speaking either to Regina or about her," Catherine agreed, sipping her wine. "Locksley men certainly are completely devoted to their wives."

Aunt Eleanor nodded. "That is true. I hope Prince Thomas can live up to those expectations if you decide to marry him, Ella."

Ella shrugged. "I don't think I want him to be as mushy as Robin. If Thomas is only half as romantic as Robin, that will be enough for me."

"Realistic expectations," Will said, nodding in approval. He then met Robin's eyes, smirking. "See?"

"I regret nothing," Robin said, draping his arm over the back of Regina's chair. "I am proud to be my father's son."

Regina chuckled, deciding to play along with their little game. "I'm glad he's his father's son."

"And that is the only opinion who matters in this matter," Robin said, taking his spoon and gently tapping it on the table. "Court is dismissed."

Everyone laughed as Will shook his head. Ella grew wistful as she said: "If anything, this is what I would miss the most. Just us laughing together."

"You may," Aunt Eleanor said. "But I am certain you will experience just as much laughter in Lavon."

Regina sipped her cordial as she leaned closer to Robin. She hoped that Prince Thomas' family would be just as warm and accepting as Robin's had been. If they were, she knew that Ella would be happy and loved.

Because in the end, that was all that mattered.

"That was fun," Robin said, lying on their bed in just his pants. He tucked his arm under his head and had his eyes closed.

Regina chuckled, braiding her hair for the night. "I love listening to you and Will banter."

"You might be the only one then."

"I doubt it," she told him, tying off her braid with a white ribbon. She flicked her braid over her shoulder before turning to face him. "You two are very amusing."

He let out a guffaw before opening an eye to look at her. "Glad we provide you entertainment."

"You do," she replied, climbing onto the bed and lying next to him. "I also love when you open your heart to me. Never stop."

Robin opened his eyes as she placed her hand over his heart. He covered hers with his own as he smiled at her. "I promise I will never stop."

"Good," she said, leaning closer to kiss him. "I love you."

He hummed as he kissed her, pulling back with a soft smile. "I love you too."

She wrapped her arm around his chest and sighed, closing her eyes. "These quiet moments with you are the best."

"I agree," he said, resting his cheek against her hair. "I wish we could just stay like this forever."

"Me too," she replied. "I doubt your council will approve."

He snorted. "They don't really approve of much."

"That is also true," she agreed. "At least they now approve of me."

"They really had no choice in that matter," he said, kissing the top of her head. "I wasn't going to give you up without a fight and I doubt I would've been the loser."

She opened her eyes, looking up into his as he gazed down at her with love and adoration. "Truly?"

"Truly," he replied. "You had my heart from your first letter."

"My first letter?" she asked, surprised. "That was a very formal letter."

He shrugged. "Maybe, but you were also very honest. I appreciated that."

"You deserved it," she replied, cuddling against him once more. "I wanted us to start with honesty, though maybe I wasn't completely honest."

"About what?" he asked, sounding confused.

She sighed, recalling her mother's face before she went through the mirror. "My deal with the Dark One," she told him.

"Right," he said, nodding. "Well, I wish you had been honest about that with me sooner but I understand why you didn't come right out and tell me. We were still essentially strangers when we married."

"I wouldn't say strangers," she replied, focusing the feel of his heart beating against her palm. "I already loved you when I married you."

He nodded. "I loved you from the moment I met you."

"That's hyperbole," she told him, amused by his statement. "We barely knew each other."

"Maybe," he replied, "but my soul recognized its mate the moment I caught you in my arms."

She bit her lip, thinking back to that pivotal moment and how her whole body seemed to respond to being in Robin's arms. "I think my soul recognized its mate too," she admitted softly.

He hummed, kissing her quickly before slipping from the bed. She frowned as she sat up, confused. "Where are you going?"

"Just using the bathroom and then I'll put out most of the lights so we can get some sleep," he replied, giving her a sheepish grin. "I'll be right back."

"Alright," she said, pulling the blankets closer to her. "I'll be waiting."

Robin disappeared into the bathroom as soft coos came from the crib by their bed. She sat up and leaned over, finding Henry's eyes open. He grinned and reached up for her, kicking his little legs as he did so. Chuckling, Regina scooped him up. "Did Papa and I wake you?"

Henry snuggled against her, resting his head on her shoulder. She kissed the top of his head. "Oh, you need some snuggles. Well, I think we can do that," she said.

She laid down with Henry on her chest, rubbing his back as she waited for Robin to emerge from the bathroom. He did so shortly after that and stopped for a moment, smiling as he took in the sight before him. "Did he wake up?"

"Yes," she said. "I think he got a little lonely in his crib."

"Ahh," Robin replied, starting to blow out the candles around the room. He then lowered the lights by their bed before climbing in with her. "Well, I guess I can't blame him. I would choose cuddling with you over sleeping by myself any day."

She chuckled, kissing his nose. "I would choose cuddling with you too."

He laid down, placing his hand on Henry's back. Robin smiled and she knew he was looking into their son's eyes. "You just want some time with Mama and me, don't you?"

"Yes, you do," Regina agreed as Henry cooed. "Maybe Papa could sing a song for you?"

"I would love to sing you a song," Robin replied, curling around Regina. "Here's one of my favorites. Your grandfather used to sing it to me when I was small, like you."

His eyes grew wistful and Regina kissed his cheek, knowing he missed his father every day. Robin cleared his throat and began singing, his voice soft but sure as the lullaby filled the room. She let her eyes close as she lost herself in the song, enjoying this sweet moment with her family.

She hoped one day, Ella was this happy with her family – whether it was with Prince Thomas or someone else.

Robin gave his permission for Ella to marry Prince Thomas. Uncle Joseph and Aunt Eleanor quickly gave their blessing and Prince Thomas asked Ella for her hand in marriage in accordance with Sherwoodian customs. Ella happily accepted and the family celebrated before Robin announced the betrothal to his council. To everyone's relief, they accepted the news with joy – most likely because there were no concerns about succession now that Regina had given birth to Robin's child and with Anastasia remaining in Sherwood with her husband. It seemed that Ella could be more beneficial as a queen elsewhere than staying behind in the country of her birth.

After some debate due to the impending Harvest Festival, it was decided to formally present the couple to the people of Locksley and send heralds to the other cities so everyone could celebrate. A holiday was declared throughout Sherwood and Regina helped plan a small ball with the other women so the court could celebrate Ella and Prince Thomas separate from the harvest celebrations.

On Saturday, Robin escorted Regina to the room with the grand balcony to await the formal presentation ceremony. The rest of his family greeted them and Regina went to Ella, who was dressed in a beautiful white gown with fleur-de-lis embroidered in golden thread into the skirt and bodice. A small, bejeweled tiara sat nestled amongst her blonde locks, which were piled high on her head and curled.

"You look beautiful," Regina said, hugging her. "Already a glowing bride."

Ella beamed. "Thank you, Regina. I hope I look even half as beautiful as you and Ana did on your wedding days."

"You will," Regina assured her. "Because like us, you are marrying the man you love and that will make you be absolutely radiant as you walk down the aisle to him."

"I agree," Ana said, smiling up at Will as he wrapped his arm around her. "There's no better feeling."

Ella glanced over at Thomas as he stood with his guards, her gaze softening. "I think I understand."

Robin took Regina's arm, turning her attention back to him. His blue eyes shone with love as he said: "It's almost time."

"I'm ready," she said, squeezing Ella's hand before releasing it. "The people are going to be so happy for you and Thomas."

Ella glanced at the door, looking nervous. "I hope so."

"They will," Robin assured her. "I know it."

"We're ready to announce you, Your Majesties," John told them, stepping closer. "Are you ready?"

Robin nodded, patting the hand Regina had resting on his arm. "Go ahead."

The doors to the balcony opened and trumpets blared. Regina heard the people cheer even before she and Robin crossed the threshold and stepped onto the balcony. He led her right to the railing where they could look down at the people gathered in the courtyard below. Noble families stood at the front and then palace staff members were behind them. Commoners from Locksley and some surrounding villages then filled in the rest of the courtyard as well as spilled out into the streets of the city.

"Citizens of Sherwood," Robin declared after silencing the crowd with his hand. "I thank you for gathering here today. My family and I have a joyful announcement we wish to share with you. Prince Thomas of Lavon has asked for my cousin Lady Ella's hand in marriage and I have given my permission for them to marry."

People cheered again and Regina heard many of them shouting "huzzah" over and over. Robin chuckled before announcing: "I present to you the happy couple – Lady Ella and Prince Thomas!"

He led Regina to the side as the trumpets blared again. She was glad that Henry was safely tucked away in their rooms with Tink, knowing the trumpets would've upset him and made him cry. It would've pulled her attention away from this moment as Thomas led Ella onto the balcony to greet the people. The sun caught the jewels in Ella's tiara and made her blonde hair glow, almost giving her a halo.

It was a moment Regina knew she would remember forever as her heart swelled with love for her friend.

The other members of the royal family stepped onto the balcony as the people cheered for Ella and Thomas. Regina pressed her hand to her heart, feeling a few tears fill her eyes. "They look so happy," she said.

"They do," he agreed. "And I think they'll only get happier, like us."

She smiled, looking up at him. Regina nodded. "I think so as well."

He took her free hand and raised it to his lips. Robin pressed a kiss to the back of her hand before motioning to the railing again. They stepped up with the rest of the family, everyone flanking Ella and Thomas as the crowds continued to cheer below. Regina waved to her people, basking in the love and glad she had a family that she could share such happy moments with at last.

For a moment, she thought she had gotten her happy ending but she realized her story was nowhere finished.

This was her happy middle.

"You both look very handsome," Catherine said as Robin escorted Regina to the Great Hall for the ball in honor of Ella's betrothal to Prince Thomas.

Regina smoothed down the blue satin brocade of her skirt, still feeling uncertain of her choice. "Thank you, though I still think perhaps we should've worn Sherwood green instead," she said.

"Blue is the color of Prince Thomas' kingdom," Ana said. "It's only fitting that you to wear it to honor him."

"The fact we both look amazing in the color is an added bonus," Robin said, winking at her.

She chuckled, looking over his blue satin coat. It made the blue of his eyes stand out even more and she nodded. "We certainly do."

Prince Thomas and Ella arrived then, her hand in his. They bowed to Robin and Regina. "Thank you for this celebration," Thomas said.

"You're welcome," Robin said, holding out his hand to the prince. "Welcome to the family."

Prince Thomas smiled as he shook Robin's hand. "Thank you. And we welcome you to ours."

"Shall I let the heralds know they can announce us?" Catherine asked, smiling as she stepped closer. It seemed she didn't particularly care if they joined the ball or just stayed there talking with each other.

Regina felt the same but she knew they had to join the ball. She glanced up at Robin, who nodded before she said: "You may."

Catherine bowed her head before walking away. Robin rubbed Regina's hand. "I guess we should line up. Thomas and Ella, you'll be before me and Regina."

"Oh, they aren't last?" Regina asked, surprised. After all, the ball was in their honor.

"No," Robin replied. "As king and queen, we are always last. But they will be right before as the guests of honor."

She nodded, feeling her cheeks heat up. "I guess I still have a lot to learn."

He kissed her cheek. "I'm still learning too. You're not alone."

"Good," she replied. "I guess we can mess up together."

"Absolutely," he said as the others entered the ballroom one by one. Soon, only Ella and Thomas stood in front of them.

Trumpets sounded before the herald announced Thomas and Ella. As the curtain parted, applause was already heard in the ballroom. Regina smiled as the couple walked in, basking in the attention they were getting.

"Our turn," Robin said, squeezing Regina's hand.

"Presenting their majesties King Robert and Queen Regina," the herald announced as the trumpets blared again. The curtain parted and Robin escorted Regina into the ballroom as those gathered applauded, welcoming them warmly.

Once they reached their seats, Robin looked around the room with a smile. "I want to welcome everyone to our palace and thank you for coming to celebrate my cousin's betrothal. We wish them both all the happiness in the world."

"Huzzah!" someone called out from a far corner. The others repeated the cheer, applauding as well.

Once the clapping stopped, Regina waved her hand. "Please sit down and enjoy your meal."

Their guests all took their seats as servants filled the room with all the different dishes. One poured wine for Robin and Regina before bowing. Robin picked up his goblet and held it high. "I propose a toast," he said.

"Please raise your goblets," Regina said, picking hers up as well. Most followed her lead and several goblets were raised. She tried not to look at the ones who refused to listen to her even as her heart sank that there were still those who did not recognize her as their queen.

If Robin noticed, he said nothing and just continued with the toast. "To Thomas and Ella," he said. "May you have many years of happiness and love."

"To Thomas and Ella," everyone said, sipping their wine.

Robin finally sat down as did Regina, allowing servants to come and place food down by them. He motioned to Regina. "You take first," he said.

"Would it break some important protocol if I ask Ella and Thomas to take first?" she asked him. "They are the guests of honor."

Catherine chuckled. "You would not. I think that would be a great gesture."

"Then Ella and Thomas, you help yourselves first," Regina said, motioning to the dishes in front of them. "Everything looks delicious if you ask me."

Thomas chuckled. "I do have to agree."

Ella pointed to one dish. "Is that one of your country's traditional dishes?"

"I believe it is," he said, leaning forward to study it. "I'm impressed."

"I hope our cooks did it justice," Regina said, not wanting to insult him. "They didn't have much time to prepare but they are the best cooks in all of Sherwood."

He chuckled, nodding as he took some of the dish. "Well, I'll give it a try and let you know."

She held her breath as he cut into the fish, taking a small bite. He chewed a few times before his eyes lit up. Thomas turned his attention back to Regina. "You are very modest about your cooks' ability. This tastes like my own cooks had made it themselves."

"Oh good," Regina said, relief spreading through her. She made a note to send down little gifts to thank the cooks.

"Well, now I think I need to try this dish," Robin said, taking some of the fish. He turned to Regina. "Do you want some too?"

She nodded, holding out her plate for him to put some fish on it. "It does look very good."

Ella's eyes brightened. "You'll love it! This was one of my favorites when I visited Thomas' court."

"Which explains why our cooks were able to get it so easily," Robin teased her, chuckling. "I'm surprised you hadn't tried to bribe them to make it already."

"I wanted to," Ella admitted. "But I didn't know how the court would react to a foreign dish given, well…"

She trailed off but Regina could finish the sentence. The court hadn't been very welcoming to her when she married Robin and so Ella would've likely been uncomfortable introducing anything else considered foreign to such a hostile court. It was a smart move, in Regina's opinion.

Robin pressed his lips together, nodding. "I am glad to see our court more open to foreigners."

"I think Regina opened their eyes to the value of other cultures," Ana said, smiling softly at Regina.

"I hope so," Regina said, warmth spreading through her.

Robin took her hand and kissed her knuckled. "I agree with Ana. I think you've opened up our court to the world beyond Sherwood and made it better."

Her heart skipped a beat as she bit her lip. "Thank you."

"Now, what else do you want to eat?" Robin asked, motioning to all the plates in front of them. "Just say the word and it's yours."

She laughed, squeezing his hand. "I can serve myself but thank you."

"Alright," he replied, smiling as he turned to Catherine. "Mother?"

As his mother repeated Regina's words, Regina helped herself to a Sherwoodian hen and some potatoes. She looked around before frowning. "Do we have any vegetables on the table?"

"We do," Robin said, motioning to Will. "My best friend and secretary is hoarding them."

Will rolled his eyes as he handed the platter to Regina. "Here you go."

She thanked him, spooning some vegetables onto her plate before handing the platter to Robin. Regina then tried the dish from Thomas' country, enjoying the savory flavors. After swallowing, she said: "This is delicious. I can see why it is a favorite."

"Thank you," Thomas said, smiling. "I look forward to hearing your thoughts on other traditional dishes."

"I look forward to trying them," Robin said, sipping his wine after taking his own bite of the fish.

Thomas chuckled. "I look forward to showing you around my kingdom."

"Will the wedding be there or here?" Anastasia asked, frowning. "Has that been decided?"

"I was thinking we could have two ceremonies," Ella said, taking Thomas' hand. "Celebrate in both kingdoms."

Excitement filled Regina as she finished the fish. "I think that sounds like a wonderful idea."

Aunt Eleanor nodded. "I agree."

"We'll have to discuss it with my parents but I doubt they'll disapprove," Thomas said, kissing Ella's hand.

"Then I look forward to your weddings," Robin said, raising his goblet again. "Cheers!"

Everyone laughed before sipping from their own goblets. Regina let her wine slip down her throat before placing her goblet down and turning to her Sherwoodian hen. As they continued to eat, conversations turned to other topics and their table was filled with happiness and laughter.

The servants cleared the last of the food away as Robin leaned back in his chair. He patted his stomach. "I think you may need to roll me back to my rooms, Will," he said.

"Why me?" Will asked, scowling.

"Do you expect Her Majesty to roll me?" Robin asked, motioning to Regina. She picked up her napkin, wiping her mouth to hide her smile.

Will shook his head. "You have servants. Let one of them roll you."

"But you're my secretary," Robin argued. "That seems like it would be your job."

"I am not here as your secretary," Will pointed out, taking Anastasia's hand. "I am here as your cousin's husband."

Robin sighed. "Fine."

"Besides, don't you want to dance?" Ella asked. "I am certain your beautiful wife wants to."

"Dancing does sound like a nice way to end the evening," Regina said, laying her hand on her husband's arm.

His expression softened as he covered her hand with his own. "I can never deny you anything," he told her.

Robin stood and helped her to her feet as well. She linked her arm with his as they walked toward the dance floor, a hush falling on the room. They reached the center of the room and faced each other. She curtsied as he bowed and the musicians began playing a waltz.

With her hand on his shoulder and his on her waist, they easily moved around the dance floor. He spun her after their first revolution, her skirts billowing around her before they returned to hold as Ella and Thomas joined them. The two couples danced around each other, careful to never collide even as they kept their eyes locked on their partners.

Leaning closer to her husband, Regina found herself again mesmerized by his blue eyes. She believed that they could be married for fifty years and looking into them would still make her feel the same way she did that first day. The love in his eyes grew each day, just as did the love she felt for him. And she knew it was a love that would never die.

He kissed the side of her head and she closed her eyes, relishing the feeling. "I love you," he whispered.

"I love you too," she whispered back.

The song ended and they reluctantly parted. He bowed to her again as she curtsied. Near them, Ella and Thomas did the same as everyone else applauded for the two couples.

"I'm afraid I have to let you go now," Robin said, stepping back and kissing her hand. "It's time for some of the other courtly dances."

She nodded, reaching for Thomas' hand. "I like those as well."

"They are fun," he agreed, taking his cousin's hand. He then nodded to the musicians, who started a livelier song. "But I will be counting down to the next waltz."

"So will I," Thomas said, glancing at Ella. She beamed as they moved closer together until their clasped hands touched. They then took several steps out before Regina released Robin's hand and Thomas let go of Ella's. Regina pressed her right hand to Thomas' left as they both dipped, one leg going behind the other. They switched hands and repeated the motion before clasping hands and spinning together in time to the music.

Others began joining them on the dance floor. She and Thomas joined hands with Will and Ana, repeating the steps as they kept changing partners and forming new groups with the other dancers. Regina went through about ten partners before she found herself in a group with Robin again. They paired up as the dance ended with her in his arms, twirling around each other.

"Are you having fun?" he asked her, the music changing for the next dance.

She nodded, pressing her palm to his. "Are you?"

"I am," he replied. "Though I have more fun dancing with you."

"You are my favorite dance partner too," she said, taking his hands as she stepped right and he moved left. They returned to center before he went right and she went left. Regina hooked her arm with his and they swung around together.

He smiled as they pressed their palms together to repeat the motions again. "I am glad to hear it."

As they spun around, she said: "I wish we could dance all night."

"Do you?" he asked, looking surprised.

She nodded, moving closer to him. "Of course, I wish we could do that in the privacy of our rooms without everyone else."

He leaned closer, whispering in her ear: "That can be arranged."

It sent a thrill down her spine as she imagined the two of them spending the rest of the night in bed, their bodies intertwined under the covers. She couldn't imagine a better way to spend it.

She was a very lucky woman.

"Goodnight, my little prince," Regina said, gently laying Henry back in his crib. His diaper was now clean and his eyes were already closed, lulled back to sleep by her arms now that he was comfortable. It warmed her heart.

Robin placed his hand on her back, leaning closer to her. "Do you need some help with your dress?"

"I do," she replied, feeling him loosening the laces. "Thank you.'

"You're welcome," he said. "You know how much I love undressing you."

She hummed, letting her dress slide off her body. Regina stepped out of it with Robin's help before wrapping her arms around him. "I love undressing you too," she told him.

He leaned down, kissing her neck as she closed her eyes. Warmth started to pool deep down inside her and she let out a soft sigh. She loved how he could make her feel so many different things – and in this moment, she felt desired and sexy.

"Are we putting on nightclothes?" he asked her, nipping at her ear now. "Or just going to bed naked?"

"Your call," she replied, running her hands down the sleeves of his coat. "But keep in mind our son is in the room."

He hummed, glancing over at the cradle. "He's been sleeping more through the night. I doubt he'll wake up. And he won't really know what we're doing…"

"That is true," she agreed. She glanced at the cradle as well. "But…"

"But it still feels weird, doesn't it?" he asked, smiling.

She nodded, relieved that he understood. "It does."

"Then I think he's due for another sleepover with his grandmother," Robin replied, starting to gently pull pins from her hair so her curls cascaded toward her shoulders. "And we can have some fun of our own."

"I like the sound of that," she said, kissing his nose. "I love you."

He smiled, opening his mouth when someone banged on the door. Robin frowned, looking away from her. "I wonder who that could be."

"You should check," she said, knowing they would only be disturbed this late for an emergency.

"I'll be right back," he replied, pressing a kiss to the back of her hand. He then released it and walked out of their bedroom to answer the door.

Regina walked back to their bed, sitting on the edge as she looked down at her sleeping son. Henry's chest rose and fell in even breaths as his hands rested next to his head. It was such a sweet image and Regina's heart melted a bit as she watched him.

She heard the door close and she looked up as Robin returned to the room, his face. Her heart now skipped a bit as her stomach twisted into a knot. "Robin, what's wrong? Who was at the door?"

"It was John," he said, stepping closer to her. "The Ellises have been captured and are on their way back to Locksley."

Her heart jumped into her throat and she tried to swallow it back down into its proper place. "So does this mean the trial is going to happen sooner?"

"I don't know," he replied, sitting down and taking her hand. "I still need to discuss this with Lady Wellingsbury and the rest of the council but I imagine they will push even more for us to finally set a date for the trial."

"Then what will happen?" she asked, afraid her dinner was about to come back up from how nervous she was.

He sighed, squeezing her hand. "I don't really know. All I know is that whatever it is, we will face it together."

Regina rested her head on his shoulder, somewhat comforted by his words. She turned her gaze back to Henry as she hoped that they made it through the trial and didn't put their family in even more danger.

But she knew that Robin was right. As long as they were together, they could face anything that happened.

No matter what.
