The dungeon classroom smelled of damp stone, aged parchment, and the distinct tang of brewing potions. Sia entered alongside the crowd of students, keeping to the side, observing. The wooden tables were arranged in pairs, and students were already sorting themselves into familiar partnerships.
She immediately recognized the dynamic shifts—friends seeking each other out, unspoken alliances forming.
Severus had already moved to join Evan Rosier, another Slytherin and one of his closer acquaintances. They murmured quietly to one another, taking their seats without hesitation.
Lily naturally gravitated toward Remus Lupin, the two exchanging a brief smile as they settled into place.
Several others, names Sia recalled from Diagon Alley or whispered conversations in the common room, found their way to their respective partners.
Dorcas Meadowes (Gryffindor) and Marlene McKinnon (Gryffindor) worked efficiently, their quiet competence apparent.
Florence Jorkins (Ravenclaw) and Ludo Bagman (Hufflepuff), an odd pairing, but one that seemed easygoing enough.
Reginald Avery (Slytherin) and Felix Burke (Slytherin), their partnership one of mutual ambition rather than friendship.
Sia caught movement beside her. Andromeda Black, her sharp eyes assessing the room, turned her gaze on Sia and gave a small, decisive nod. Without words, they took the table behind Lily and Remus, across from Severus and Evan.
The moment the last student found their place, Professor Slughorn clapped his hands together, beaming.
"Ah, excellent, excellent! Now, my dear students, welcome to what I promise will be one of the most… illuminating courses in your magical education!" His round face glowed with enthusiasm as he surveyed the classroom, lingering on a few select students—Lily, Severus, and even Sia for a fraction longer than expected.
"As you all know, Potions is both a science and an art. It requires intellect, precision, and most importantly—" he paused dramatically, his mustache twitching, "—an understanding of why ingredients interact the way they do."
With a flick of his wand, the blackboard filled with elegant, slanted script.
The Elixir of Clarity
"The Elixir of Clarity is what we'll be working on today! A potion that sharpens the mind, allowing the drinker enhanced perception and reasoning for a brief period. But—ah!—" Slughorn waggled a finger, "—a single misstep can lead to disastrous effects. Hallucinations, confusion, and in the worst cases, temporary magical disorientation!"
A few students shifted uneasily. Sia simply glanced at the instructions. The potion was complex, but nothing she hadn't seen before.
"Now then, before we begin, let's test our knowledge!" Slughorn's gaze landed on Lily expectantly. "Tell me, what is the primary stabilizing agent in this potion?"
Lily, without missing a beat, answered, "Moonstone, Professor. It prevents the belladonna from becoming too volatile when exposed to heat."
"Five points to Gryffindor!" Slughorn announced with a pleased chuckle.
He turned, eyes twinkling, and addressed Severus. "And what is the most common side effect of an improperly brewed Elixir of Clarity?"
Severus' tone was calm, measured. "Hallucinations. If the powdered moonstone is added too early, it destabilizes the potion, causing unpredictable neurological reactions in the drinker."
"Ah, spot on! Five points to Slytherin!"
As the class set to work, Sia moved with deliberate precision, measuring each ingredient with care. Andromeda worked beside her in efficient silence, her movements practiced, confident.
Slughorn drifted through the room, pausing at cauldrons, offering comments or nods of approval. He hummed as he passed Lily's work, chuckled approvingly at Severus' precise cuts, and then paused briefly at Sia's station, his gaze lingering on her methodical preparation.
The room filled with the quiet bubbling of potions, the scent of herbs and minerals thick in the air.
Then, Slughorn clapped his hands once more, drawing attention back to him. "Now, a final question!" His voice boomed with anticipation. "What is the key interaction between the ingredients that allows the Elixir of Clarity to function?"
Silence.
Lily frowned slightly, her mind clearly racing through theories. Severus' fingers twitched as if turning over possible answers.
But no one spoke.
Sia allowed the silence to stretch before she answered smoothly, "The reaction between powdered moonstone and crushed belladonna results in a temporary expansion of synaptic pathways. The potion works because the alkaloids in belladonna bond with the calcium in the moonstone, enhancing neurotransmitter conductivity. That's what allows for the momentary boost in cognitive processing."
The silence that followed was heavier this time.
Slughorn blinked.
A few students turned to look at her.
Lily's brows furrowed slightly, considering the explanation. Severus' jaw tensed, eyes sharp.
Saw me now, did you? Sia mused inwardly, amusement curling at the edge of her thoughts.
And then, Slughorn let out a delighted laugh. "Outstanding! Absolutely outstanding! Miss Ashford, that is knowledge far beyond your year!" His eyes gleamed with intrigue. "You must have done some serious studying! Ten points to Slytherin!"
Sia simply nodded, returning her attention to her potion.
By the end of class, with ten minutes remaining, Slughorn clapped his hands once again.
"Time's up! Now, let's see who managed to create the best potion."
Sia had finished a full minute before his announcement. She had noticed Lily and Severus complete their brews within five seconds of each other. Curious, she thought idly. I wonder how he managed to concentrate when he spent half the class staring at her.
Lily, for her part, had ignored him completely, her focus entirely on her potion.
Slughorn moved through the classroom, inspecting each potion in turn. His expressions varied—polite nods for some, mild disappointment for others. When he reached Lily's table, his face brightened into a wide grin.
"Marvelous, Miss Evans!" he declared, clearly impressed. He then turned to Remus with a polite smile before moving on.
Stopping at Severus' cauldron, his face lit up even further. "Oh my, Severus! Even better than Miss Evans!" He clapped him on the back. "Keep it up, my boy!"
Then he reached Sia's station.
For a moment, his smile faltered. His expression shifted—something less performative, something considering.
Out of the corner of her eye, Sia caught the smirk that had appeared on Severus' face just moments before.
"Bless my soul," Slughorn murmured, inspecting the potion closely. "Brewed it exactly as I would have done…"
A brief pause.
"A sixth-year student this proficient—" He looked at her, curiosity burning beneath the admiration.
Sia glanced at Severus in time to see the smirk slip from his face. Satisfying, she thought.
She could feel it—the shift in the air. The way Slughorn now looked at her with renewed interest, the way Severus' gaze lingered, unreadable.
Something had changed.
And Slughorn, ever the collector of talent, had just discovered a new gem.
