Shepard had never been a fan of unknowns. Unknowns were what got people killed, and whatever this Leviathan thing was seemed to be a particularly dangerous type of unknown. At the very least, they needed to make sure that its reaper-killing abilities didn't royally bite the galaxy in the collective ass somewhere along the line.
