I began writing this fanfic back in late January but had a bit of writers block, but thanks to JilliamFan for helping me
It was a sunny day in London, William and Julia had planned a family outing in the park with Susannah.
After they had their lunch, Susannah jumped up and shouted, "mommy and daddy chase me!"
"You, go William," Julia said, waving him off, "I'd like to read for a bit."
William nodded, stood and warned playfully, "look out the daddy monster is coming!" Susannah screamed in delight as she ran behind a nearby tree, giggling.
Julia chuckled as she read her book, then, out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a familiar face, "Lavinia," she murmured.
"Julia, if you please…could we talk?" Lavinia asked politely and patting the seat beside her on a bench.
Julia set her book on the blanket and went to join her. William noticed them speaking and felt a tinge of worry, fearing that Julia might break her promise by rejoining the group. He decided not to make a scene, so he continued chasing Susannah around the park until Julia returned.
When they were finished their conversation, Julia came back to the blanket. William approached Susannah, "time to go, sweetheart."
"No! I want to play more" she pleaded
Kneeling to her level, William offered a compromise, "I'm sorry sweetheart, but we have to head home. How about I give you a ride on my shoulders?"
Susannah's eyes lit up, "Yes!" she shouted, and William hoisted her up onto his shoulders.
They returned home, ate dinner, then gave Susannah a bath.
After reading her a bedtime story, they each kissed her good night kiss, and William closed her
door gently, as he and Julia then settled into their own bed.
Later that night, William found himself unable to sleep, as he quietly slipped out of bed, he headed downstairs to make tea, hoping Julia would notice his absence. Sure enough, as he sat sipping quietly at the table, he heard her footsteps.
"William, what's the matter?" she asked, concern in her voice
He poured her a cup of tea, and spoke softly "I saw you talking to one of the women from the group."
"Lavinia?" Julia guessed
"Yes" he said, his tone uneasy, "you promised me, you wouldn't get involved anymore"
"I'm not William, I promise"
"Then, why was she there at the park?"
"She just wanted to see how we were doing-and she's leaving the group as well," Julia answered. "She also wanted to warn me that Lucy is out to get me, because of you"
"Because, we told Inspector Dobb about the bomb?" William asked, his voice tight
/Julia nodded, "yes, but there's more…when I first met Lucy, she came to the hospital for stitches on her finger. She claimed she cut it with a knife. She told me she'd fled an abusive husband in New York. Now it turns out none of that was true."
"How did you find that out?"
"Lavinia told me. Lucy's husband was apparently a good man. They have 4 children, and after their youngest was born, Lucy abandoned them all and moved to London under a different name. Her husband tracked her down and begged her to come home, but she spat in his face and said she never wanted marriage or children.
Now it makes sense why she showed no remorse."
"For what?"
"For Susannah almost getting hurt in the explosion." Julia explained, "Lucy said I was being 'hysterical,' and I had to push back the urge to slap her. I knew she wasn't fond of children, but showing no remorse…I finally saw her true colors"
William reached for her hand, "I'm sorry you had to deal with that. What about Lavinia?"
"She's harmless, just as I told you," Julia reassured him. "She only stopped by to check on us and mentioned Susannah looks like you…which she does, she added with a smile.
William chuckled, "she sounds like a good friend"
"She was," Julia said sadly, "she and her husband are leaving London to move to New York, to be closer to his family."
William gave her a sympathetic nod, "well, at least she's away from that group now."
She nodded, "as I am, too William. I am sorry I joined the group and didn't tell you. I was missing companionship and got carried away at the rallies.
I realize I'm not just fighting for woman's equal rights, I am fighting for Susannah's future."
"Indeed, and she will be proud of you"
She smiled and took his hand, "yes, I know….so were good now William?"
He nodded, "were all good"
"Good" as they finished their tea and headed back to bed, falling asleep in each other's arms.
The End
