The memories started for Val in a cold, barren, wild place. The sky was overcast and dreary. She felt the chill in the air, knowing it should have made her shiver. The land had various sized cliffs jutting up and around at various heights. She looked around, seeing a small, Namekian like structure behind her. She stepped towards it, resting her hand on it one last time before launching herself into the air. She saw... humans... demons... others... other places... none were pure of heart... Selfish, violent, greedy creatures... immoral... shameful... unworthy of-

"Val, wake up," she heard a voice cut through the memories. "Just for a minute. Just long enough to pass Dende the staff and the guardianship," the voice, Piccolo's voice urged.

"The short, fat one said she needed to rest. Can't it wait?" she heard a gruffer voice demand. She opened her eyes, straining to focus. She saw Piccolo's face looming above her. She saw blue sky and white puffy clouds above him. She frowned, wondering where the Yunzabit Heights went to.

"Trust me. The sooner she does, the better it will be for her and for the planet," Piccolo responded to... Vegeta's voice.

Piccolo noticed her she was awake. He sat her down at her feet carefully. She looked around the... Look Out, bringing her hands to her eyes with a groan. On one hand, she saw Dende and Mr. Popo with the staff in hand as well as the three Saiyans not far from him. Then she blinked, groaning anew as an image of the guardian before Kami stood before with Mr. Popo with his staff in hand and a short man that looked like Garlic Jr. standing near him, sensing a competition of sorts was about to begin...

"Val, focus," she heard Piccolo say behind her.

She turned and leaned against him, seeing and hearing the former guardian in her mind's eye telling her she must resist and purge the evil from within to become pure of heart enough to become guardian.

She felt sharp nails catch her up under her jaw and neck. She looked up, seeing Piccolo and hearing him repeat, "focus on Dende." He guided her to turn around. She leaned against him, watching Piccolo take the staff from Mr. Popo. He pressed it in her hands. She felt the staff hum, keeping her mentally in the present when her mind ache to slip back into the memories. "Focus on Dende," he instructed, hands on her shoulders and upper arms. She felt her head pound and vision blur. She closed her eyes in a painful squint. "Look at Dende," he demanded, nails biting into her shoulders. She forced herself to open her eyes and not think, staring down at Dende. "Pass him the staff and tell him to protect the Earth. Then you'll have all the time and more that you need to rest," he insisted.

Val took a shaky step forward, bending down and handing him the staff. He brought his hands up to it, gripping it with both of her hands. She would not let herself blink as she stared Dende in the eyes lest a memory pull her back. "Protect... the Earth... my brother..." she breathed out.

"Yes, big sister," he swore solemnly. She felt a splitting pain rock the inside of her mind. She let go of the staff, and dropped to her knees. She brought one hand to her forehead and one to ground beneath her, pounding on it. "Rest now, sister, rest," she heard Dende permit.

She closed her weary eyes as her mind start to wonder on the brink of more memories. She felt someone strong pick her up and hold her in the princess carry. She grabbed his shirt and edge of his cape, pulling herself up to lean against his shoulder. Her hand clasped the front of his cape tightly as she closed her eys. She felt her mind wander back to the prior guardian once more saying to cast the evil from within. She trembled, apprehensive about sinking into that memory. "Ka...ts..."

"Mr. Popo, can you do me a favor? Gather her things and bring them with us..." she heard the person hold her bid. "Dende, to buy her mor time to recover..."

She felt herself slump and slip back into the memories. The prior guardian was there again, saying on repeat to separate from the evil from within. She heard him cry out, a black cloud forming above and then next to him. Most of the Dragon Clan remained with him, but most of the Demon Clan was shed. The shape formed into an almost mirror image of himself. He crouched and snarled wildly looking at him, now Kami and around the Lookout. The evil one went to attack him, but Kami shoved him away and off the Lookout, gasping as she watched what was now King Piccolo fall through the sky. He stretched his hand out in vain, fearful of what corrupt evil he might have just unleashed on the planet below.

Kami's memories played on, the guilt of seeing the humans, who were themselves racked with immorality, suffer under King Piccolo. Kami felt the temptation more than once to take his own life to stop the murderous being he shared a life link with. The power of guardianship was nothing more than a bitter pill in the back of his throat as he watched the world from above. The power was not worth the cost of becoming guardian when he felt unworthy of it as he watched King Piccolo below, evil increased under the influence of a demoness below. He felt some relief at least as Master Roshi trapped him with the evil containment wave. Three hundred years passed until a foolish Earthling released him, allowing him to start terrorizing the Earth anew, killing so many and his sons terrorizing the Earth. Only then did another, an alien boy who was pure in heart, Goku, defeating King Piccolo once and for all. Kami felt his life start to slip away until he saw King Piccolo spit up an egg, passing the life link and memories onto his last son.

The son, Piccolo Jr., lived below, training himself under the motivation to defeat Goku. Goku came to Kami, who trained him to defeat the living Piccolo in the following martial arts tournament. Kami himself even went to the tournament, possessing another human who was pure enough in heart for it. Piccolo trapped Kami in a bottle, grew huge, and Goku managed to rescue Kami and defeat him. This alien was pure at heart, more than anyone else Kami, including himself, had known on this planet. He offered Goku the guardianship, surprised when he turned it down.

The Earth was at peace after that, if only for five years. Val felt herself flinch away at the sight of Raditz coming to the planet, trying to recruit Goku and then trying to kidnap Gohan. Piccolo killing Raditz along with Goku. Kami going to King Yemma's office with the dead Goku to bid him to allow Goku to train with King Kai to fight Vegeta and Nappa when they come to Earth. Then Kami training the others to fight as well. Then, during the fight, Piccolo's death, and thus Kami's death until they were wished back to life by the Namekian dragon balls. The rush afterwards to use the Earth's dragon balls to revive those who died on Namek and then the rush to use the Namekian dragon balls to bring everyone but Frieza and Goku back to Earth. After that, swearing to himself the next time Earth was at risk, Piccolo's life and his own were at risk, he would put a new guardian in his place before the fight to ensure the protection of the planet.

Then the arrival and time spent with the other Namekians who had come to the planet, brothers from the Dragon Clan lost long ago, and even stranger, the undeniably beautiful but far too young, Anthromorph adopted as part of the Demon Clan who had been wed to the last living Demon Clansman on the planet who ended up sacrificing himself to strengthen Piccolo to defeat Frieza and avenge the others who had died. The awkward conversation with the Great Elder Moori who thought wrongly, almost entertainingly, that Piccolo would simply take over that bond. And when the other Namekian left, the three of them stayed and remained as the last three, albeit not wholly, Demon Clan members. All three of them resigning themselves to live on, protect, and serve Earth as their new home world.

The Anthromorph as well, fearing her powers to curse or bless someone as she so chose and training her to control them with the bracelets and without fear, only for it to one day almost cost her her life. When Piccolo turned down Kami's offer to become the next guardian of the Earth, Kiri was there that day at the Lookout, looking to train with Piccolo as usual up there away from Tien, with whom she had been in a relationship with for sometime then. Kami took one look at her, realizing she also could be trained up as guardian: pure enough in heart, protective to a fault, highly intelligent, adaptable... Other guardians before had had spouses and children, so if things were to develop that way with her and Tien, that could work. The only drawback is she seemed to enjoy her work at Capsule Corps more than any training she endured...

Telling her the pasts of former guardians, only for her to waiver. Then for Garlic Jr. to come back and attempt to take over the Lookout. Her foolish move to curse herself to survive and go down to the Shinsenkai to help with the spread the sacred water over the Earth. The guilt of knowingly leaving her behind down there as spirits of former guardians targeted her, giving himself and Mr. Popo the time to get the sacred water spread into the Earth's atmosphere and saving the planet. Her near death once she returned to the top of the Lookout, saved only by the quick thinking of Piccolo. Then, only after her recovery, disappointingly enough, her refusal to become guardian.

Then the Earth at peace until the time the time traveler from the future, Trunks, came, defeated Frieza, and warned them all the androids coming. Watching the young Saiyan tell Goku everything, discussing it all with Piccolo afterwards. A future impending with a grim fate. Kami sensing something somehow it would be worse than predicted in the years it ticked closer and closer into being. Kiri stubbornly delaying and then outright refusing to take up the mantle of guardian that Trunks had said was her future fate before the androids showed up. The zealot obsession with defeating the heart virus and training to fight the androids in tandem blinded her from taking up the mantle destiny called her to. If Piccolo died again, so would Kami. She had to take up the mantle of guardian before that happened, but refused it. Piccolo, who once swore he saw her as nothing more than a nuisance had even gotten himself entangled with her, giving into her desires for him that lacked honor; even though he knew from Trunks she was destined to be with Tien. His unwillingness to keep the future was unraveling into unknown chaos was overly frustrating.

Then the day came where the androids arrived, but they lack the terror Trunks had predicted. Yet something more terrifying had emerged after all those years. A monster from the future keen to murder and feast on innocent humans below.

That was when Piccolo came to the Lookout, the last time Kami saw him alive. He got Kiri to follow him up by stealing part of her bracelet, and finally got her to agree to become guardian, saying it would temporary and they would find another to take her place. There was no other on that planet Kami could find, unfortunate but true. Nevertheless, amidst the inappropriate romantic undertones still simmering between the two of them, she gave into her destiny, taking up the mantle of guardian right before Kami gave up his life the way that other Demon Clansman had years ago, to strengthen Piccolo in hopes of protecting the planet.
