JaCam: Careful

"Are you doing okay?" Ahmadou asked, glancing at Kiku.

"It's fine," Kiku said. "It's not too bad."

This was the first day since Kiku dislocated his shoulder that he went to the store. Ahmadou told him that it wasn't necessary for him to come, but Kiku insisted. He wanted to get out of the house, and he also had too many groceries to buy for him to feel comfortable with asking Ahmadou to get.

Ahmadou was reaching for a can of tomato puree on the top shelf when a familiar voice called out.

"Kiku!"

Kiku turned to find his friend Alfred coming towards them. Alfred paused when he saw the sling.

"What happened to your arm?" Alfred asked.

What he did next was completely illogical: he clapped his hand on the injured shoulder. Kiku let out an involuntary cry of pain, which prompted Alfred to rear back and Ahmadou to turn to them.

"What just happened?" Ahmadou asked.

"I-I just…" Alfred stammered.

Ahmadou looked over towards Kiku, who was cradling his injured shoulder. He then turned towards Alfred with a glare.

"Did you touch his shoulder when you can clearly see that his arm is in a sling?" Ahmadou demanded.

"I… I just wanted to know what happened to his arm," Alfred said. "It was just a friendly gesture."

"So, because his arm is in the sling, there's no chance for his shoulder to be dislocated, right? Is that your logic?"

Alfred's eyes widened as he realised exactly what he did.

"Oh shit, I'm so sorry!" Alfred exclaimed. He saw that Ahmadou was still glaring at him before he rushed away. "I hope you feel better soon!"

"Idiot," Ahmadou spat, before he turned to Kiku. "Are you okay?"

Kiku could only nod, as his jaw was still clamped from the pain.

"Let's finish up, then you can put some ice on that," Ahmadou said. "Seriously, what is wrong with that idiot?"

By the time they went to pay for their groceries, Ahmadou was starting to wonder if 'common sense' needed a new name. Three more people asked about Kiku's arm while pressing against or clapping his shoulder.

My mom had a shoulder operation a few weeks ago, and the number of people who grab the shoulder while asking about the arm is staggering. Like, seriously? If you see an arm in a sling, do not initiate contact. Even worse, most of the people know that she went in for a shoulder operation and still do it.
