Summer in Italy
It was a flurry of motion as Draco packed the last of the things he thought he might need. Harry was helping their sons, and he knew he needed to calm down or Harry was likely to call an intervention. Or slam him against the nearest wall, knowing his fiancé.
"We can always ask Lyra to bring something if it is really important to you," Harry said as he walked into the bedroom and wrapped his arms around Draco. "I have already checked if that is okay and Lord Sipala is fine with her bringing things back and forth as long as that is all she does."
Draco nodded. "Okay, then I should be fine," he said. He leaned back against Harry's broad chest and sighed. "I'm glad we are coming with you, even if you will be working," he said.
"Frankly, I can work early enough in the day that we will have plenty of time together, and I can split my hours," Harry said. "You will barely notice that I'm gone, though I might work two hours on the weekend too because of that. I will be using my alarms, so there should be no issues."
A smile grazed Draco's lips as he turned around and kissed Harry. "Love you," he said.
"Draco, we are ready!" Teddy called. He was looking forward to seeing the sights of Italy, whether his dad could join or not. Draco was nice, and he had a permanent friend with him now.
Draco chuckled. "Okay, Teddy, we'll be right there," he said. He closed his suitcase and lifted it off the bed so he could pull it along. Harry brought them to Gringotts so they could take a portkey. He could probably teleport them, but he wasn't willing to risk his sons in case something went wrong.
The guard in the guard house looked at them when they arrived. He greeted Harry and looked over at Draco. "Name?" he asked.
"Draco Malfoy," Draco said.
The guard looked through his records and paused. "The younger boy's name?" he asked.
"Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy," Scorpius said.
"I see. Welcome to the house of your guidefather, Blaise Zabini," the guard said. He looked at the other boy, and Harry gave him the name of his son and heir. The guard added Teddy into their rolls and let them through.
Tony came walking towards them and had their things transported to their rooms. "Welcome to Luce del Sol. I am the Head of Security, you may call me Tony," he said. "Lord Sipala is waiting for you in the gazebo," he said.
Harry bowed. "Thank you, Tony," he said. "I shall bring my family to see him."
"Blaise and Isobelle are with him," Tony said.
"Thank you for letting us know, Tony," Harry said. "Is there anything else I need to worry about right now?"
"You were going to up security on the outer wards, right?" Tony asked.
"Soon," Harry said. "I have a few more maintenance wards to place for the older ones still."
Tony nodded. "Good, good," he couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen. The wards were good and all, but they were not as good as what Harry was laying, and he could tell the difference.
Isobelle rose from her seat as Scorpius hurried up to her with a bright smile on his face. "Aunty Belle," he called out as he crashed into her. She laughed and hugged him close before looking up at Draco. "Oh, Draco dear, it has been too long," she said in Italian.
"That it has been, my dear," Draco said, and Harry shook his head in confusion. "That is just disorientating," he muttered. Draco, speaking Italian in his head, certainly made sure he had no idea what was going on. It sounded nice though.
Teddy snorted and patted the hand resting on his shoulder. He felt his father move them forward. "Lord Sipala let me introduce you to my son and heir, Therion Black." he said.
"Welcome to Luce del Sol, Heir Black," Lord Sipala said. "I hope you and yours will find our home to your liking during your stay."
Teddy smiled. "Thank you for agreeing for us to stay within such old and magnificent wards, Lord Sipala. I hope to learn as much as I can and wish to ask if it is alright for me to take photographs while I am within your wards."
Lord Sipala raised an eyebrow as his eyes softened. "As you have seen fit to ask beforehand, I shall grant this request for all but the innermost circle of the wards," he said.
Harry nodded. He could understand why that was the case. He knew what lay within that ward, but he also knew that only Lord Sipala could allow people in there. He was only allowed so that he could place his protections, but his contract had stipulated that he could not share what was beyond that ward.
"I understand. I am grateful to be given this boon, Lord Sipala," Teddy said with a bow. He knew his grandmother would be proud, and he could feel his father's magic gently assuring him that he was doing well.
"Now that that is established, Isobelle and I shall show you to your quarters," Blaise said.
"Go ahead, Draco," Harry said. "I shall join you shortly." He had prepared their rooms already, knowing he would have to for his own sanity. He turned to Lord Sipala. "Tony seems worried about something," he said.
"We have received notice from one of the warders we turned down that his apprentice has taken offence to our refusal to hire him," Lord Sipala said. He was less than thrilled about it and felt like the Master should have better control over his apprentices.
"He wishes to challenge my lay?" Harry asked. "If that is the case, he should use the official channels."
"His Master seems to think he will not," Lord Sipala said with a sigh. Sloppy, that is what it was. He was not impressed.
Harry closed his eyes. "The best I can do in a short amount of time is protect the old wards," he said. "I cannot lay maintenance and shield on the outer ones, but all the inner wards already has the maintenance, so I could lay them with security. If he does attack your wards, he will never be a Master. I'll deal with it." He turned around and headed out.
Lord Sipala nodded slowly. He saw the stormraven leave Lord Black with a message. So the Enclave would be notified. It was only right, of course. He just hadn't been sure he should contact them before something happened. It was clear his warder thought differently and Harry was the Master.
It was late when Harry collapsed into bed. He had worked until the entire first ring of the older wards was safe. He wouldn't be able to do anything the following day, but at least the wards were safe.
Draco moved around in bed and wrapped his arms around Harry and sighed happily. He had worried about his fiancé when he hadn't showed up for dinner. He knew something was going on, though. He would just ask Harry in the morning.
…
It was a fight to reach for consciousness the next morning. Harry groaned as he covered his eyes. Magical exhaustion was never a nice thing to suffer from and Glint would be pissed off, but he had to finish those wards just to protect the older wards. He wasn't willing to let them fall.
"Hey Harry, how are you doing?"
Soft fingers ran through Harry's hair slowly as he finally managed to focus. "Exhausted," he mumbled. "Will take a few to recover."
"Why?"
"Apprentice threatening the ward instead of taking the proper rout. Couldn't risk it," Harry said.
"Anything I can do?" Draco asked.
"Replenish my well. Make sure I eat," Harry said softly. He did his best to help Draco pull him up. He stumbled once he stood and bumped into Draco.
"How do I replenish you?" Draco asked. "Our sons are with Isobelle right now."
"Fuck me," Harry said.
Draco raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?" he asked.
"Release your well and fill me," Harry said.
"Shower," Draco said as he helped Harry over to the bathroom. He pulled Harry's clothes off and pushed him up against the shower wall. "You better stay standing," he said. He grabbed Harry's hips as Harry spread his legs for him.
"Relax," Draco whispered. "I'll take care of you."
…
It was much later in the day, Harry watched his family as they messed about with Blaise and Isobelle. His head was swimming, but his well was recovering quickly enough with the boost he had received from Draco. If he had to do something, he could. He shouldn't though, and thankfully he wouldn't have to.
It took another two days before the hit came. Three men felt the intrusion through the outer wards.
Harry sighed as he rose. The attack was sloppy. Sure, they would break through the outer wards because he had done nothing for those wards. Unlike a lot of wards though, the barrage would not fell the whole ward, only a chuck of it. It would take him less than half an hour to fix once this fool was done.
Tony walked up to him. "We are letting him through?" he asked.
"He hasn't touched anything of value yet. The home is through the second ward. The one I spent a full day making sure he could not breach," Harry said. "That is where they will face my wrath and my weaving." He didn't walk all the way to where he assumed the apprentice would attack, instead he connected to the ward and started weaving the absorption ward into the rest of the protections. "He is almost here," he said calmly as he moved forward and continued weaving. He pushed more magic into the weave and moved faster before anchoring everything in the runes and the base weave.
Tony watched as Harry took a step back and left his magesight. "So now we wait?" he asked.
Harry shook his head. "He is here," he said. He pulled the directory and handed it to Tony. "You can see where the attack is coming from, and you will be able to respond from the directory. In a bit, you should be able to send a stunner at him."
Tony snorted as he saw the apprentice appear from within the nearby grove. He placed his hand on the ward and tapped at it.
"The base weave only exist to hold the rest. It wouldn't have been hard for him to get through," Harry said. "My security weave is a whole other matter. Those are built to keep people out."
"He can't see us, can he?" Tony asked.
"No," Harry said.
"He is just an apprentice and you are a full-fledged Enclave Master. What is he hoping to accomplish?" Tony asked. He didn't really understand what the apprentice was thinking. Harry might be young, but the Enclave was really strict about who got to join.
"He probably is one of those who see goblins as beneath them," Harry said calmly. "He would think the Enclave means nothing. A foolish assumption."
Tony snorted. "Yeah, that is certainly true," he said. "So what do we do?" he asked.
"What would you normally do if your wards are attacked?" Harry asked.
Tony shook his head. "Call the Aurors. I'll be right back," he said as he handed the directory back to Harry. He was only gone for ten minutes before he walked in with an Auror.
"So this is the Warder?" the Auror said. "He doesn't seem to be doing that good a job."
"That's why we aren't more worried," Tony said. "We would like him escorted off the property, though."
"And we would like a report written up and sent to the Enclave as well as the Council of Warders," Harry said. "I will be sending my own report as well."
The Auror stepped through the wards and raised a wand. He was speaking Italian, so Harry had no idea what he was saying, but it was clear enough that the Apprentice was annoyed.
"I need to go mend that rip in the outer wards," Harry said. "I'll be back after."
Tony shook his head. He was glad they had employed Harry. He was a decent bloke and he did a good job. He returned to Lord Sipala and informed him on the outcome. The wards had stayed, and the old wards were entirely protected. That was the important part.
…
Over the next few weeks, Draco took Teddy and Scorpius to several over the magical and non-magical wonders of Italy. Sometime with Blaise and Isobelle and sometimes without. Most of the time, though, Harry would show up later in the day to join his family. Teddy had a lot of pictures to show for their outings, and he was very happy about the places they had been to.
"Dad, come on!"
Draco sighed as both Teddy and Scorpius ran ahead of them. He ran his thumb down the side of Harry's hand as they followed their sons. They were going with Isobelle and her father to see the stables. Both boys were excited to see the horses and the hippogriffs.
They reached the pens and Scorpius rushed in.
"Scorpius!"
Draco froze. He knew that it was his own fault that he was terrified of hippogriffs. He had even spoken to Harry about it in the past and knew his fiancé wasn't proud of what he had done, but did not find his fears in any way ridiculous. His heart rose into his throat as Harry rushed in after their younger son and pulled him to his chest.
Harry rose slowly and let his magic flow around him. He met the eyes of the heard alpha and bowed slowly, still holding Scorpius tightly to his chest. Slowly, the big black and grey hippogriff bowed back.
Draco had grabbed on to Teddy as he reached the pen. He was watching Harry as his fiancé reached out slowly and let the big hippogriff take in his magic. Carefully, Harry moved back against the railing so he could drop Scorpius off next to his father.
"Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy! Have you completely abandoned your senses?" Draco said coldly as he walked up to his son and grabbed Scorpius. "You and I are going back to our quarters immediately."
Scorpius eyes widened and tears welled up and threatened to fall. He felt the pull as Draco teleported them back to their room.
Teddy looked at his father. "We can still ride, right?" he asked. He hadn't been too worried about Harry. He knew his father could deal with some hippogriffs, but Scorpius could have been hurt. Still, he had really wanted to go riding. He didn't want to give that up because his brother messed things up.
"Yes, we can," Harry said. "You did nothing wrong. We will stay away from the hippogriffs, though." His heart was racing, and he was doing his best to calm down.
"Okay," Teddy said. He walked with his father over to the horses. This wasn't as much fun without Scorpius, but he still wanted to ride. "Can I go with you?" he asked. He felt like he would rather just go with his father if Scorpius wasn't going to join them.
Harry smiled. "Of course," he said. They followed Isobelle over to a horse, and she helped them get it ready. "There you go," she said as Harry pulled himself up in the saddle. They helped Teddy up before Isobelle got her own horse ready.
Teddy smiled up at his father as Isobelle instructed them on how to ride. It was nice to spend time with someone so good at adapting to his father's lack of hearing. He laughed as Harry pushed the horse into a gallop. He loved this. Any thought about the danger and fear earlier was blown away in the wind tearing at their hair.
Harry watched his son's happy face. He was glad Teddy was having fun, despite what had happened earlier. It was a good thing they could separate them when something went wrong. Teddy hadn't deserved punishment for Scorpius' mistake. The laughter spreading from Teddy as he jumped a low fence was contagious. Harry was glad to have this time with his son. He would have to make sure to make time for just them in the future as well. They shouldn't lose that just because they were expanding their family.
…
It was almost three hours later when they finally made it back. Harry poured a bath for Teddy before getting into the shower himself. When he made it back to the living room, he found Draco sitting on the couch reading. He sat down next to him, and wrapped his arms around him. He didn't say anything. They didn't argue punishments very often, and Harry knew why Draco had reacted the way he did. He pressed a kiss to Draco's temple.
Draco sighed as he leaned back against Harry. He had been terrified when Scorpius just ran off earlier. He locked his fingers with Harry's as he tried to focus on the book he was holding. He could feel Harry working on the wards even though he was supposed to rest. He didn't feel like pointing that out to him, though.
"Draco…"
Draco looked up at Teddy. "Yes, Teddy," he said.
"Can I play with Scorpius?" Teddy asked. He wasn't sure just how much trouble his brother was in, so he felt it was best to ask.
Draco smiled at him. "Yes, Teddy, you may," he said. He wasn't impossible. He knew Scorpius regretted his actions. He put the book aside and looked up at Harry. He tapped Harry's shoulder to catch his attention. He moved to get more comfortable as he waited for Harry to move away from the wards. "Thank you," he said as Harry focused his glowing eyes upon him.
Harry smiled at him. "He is our son," he said. "We will protect him. Worst case scenario, I would have stunned them all to get us out of there." He ran his hands along Draco's sides slowly. "I will take care of that tension later so you can rest," he said. "Just decide how you want me to help."
Draco smiled at him. "Why thank you, my knight," he said.
Harry chuckled darkly, causing Draco to shudder pleasantly. He loved the things just their voices could accomplish. He was glad he could return the favour. He loved Harry.
…
It was infuriating. Draco hated and loved it all at the same time. How could Harry be so stupidly confident. It was the giving of the fifth gift. Blaise and Isobelle were looking after their sons.
Harry had invited Draco with him out and was happily just walking next to him along the beach. They had eaten a wonderful meal already. Still, throughout it all, Harry was calm and wonderful and perfect. Until he showed up.
Draco looked at the blond man in front of them. He had bright blue eyes and looked good. It was obvious that Harry knew this man not just from him calling Harry's name, but also from the tension in Harry's shoulders. This was another ex. He wondered which one it was, glad that Harry had told him about all of his previous partners.
"Flynn, to what do I owe the pleasure?" Harry said calmly. Flynn had been too long ago to matter, really. He had cheated and that was all there was to their relationship. Harry had barely spared him a thought in the past few years. He had told Draco about him, that was about it.
Flynn met Harry's eyes. Oh, he knew he had messed this up himself. It had been his fault and no one else's. He had thought back to his time with Harry a fair amount, and no lover gave the way Harry did. His eyes were so beautiful. So inviting. "I've missed you," he said.
"Well, the feeling certainly isn't mutual," Harry said just as calmly as before. "My fiancé and I were having a pleasant evening. We would like to continue. I hope I never see you again."
"Judy is dying," Flynn said, as if that would change anything.
Harry sighed. He would have to look into that, but it was not something he wished to be involved in now. He tugged at Draco's arm and they continued walking. It had been years, and Harry saw no reason to care about these people. He could not bleed for every person that he met. Judy had been nice, but she had never known him. He made sure Flynn could not follow them as they continued. "We need to return to Britain for me to hand you your gift," Harry said calmly once they were out of view. "Aid me?"
Draco smiled at him. He knew Harry had already made sure no one would notice. He had felt the magic. They connected and left the beach behind.
The wards of Blackbird welcomed them home.
Harry led Draco inside. "Remember that these gifts are wilder ones," he said as they stepped into the living room. There was a basket sitting on the table, and Draco walked forward. He heard a soft mewing sound and looked into the basket. It was a beautiful white and gray kitten with big seafoam green eyes. He reached in and touched the soft fur and the cat started purring. Draco could feel the magic of the kitten calling to him. He reached within his well and looked up at Harry. "How?" he whispered.
Harry placed his hands on Draco's shoulders and guided him to set his connection with the kitten, giving it more freedom than a regular bond would but the same feeling of belonging and protection, much like he had done with Gienah. "Name?" he asked.
"Chertan," Draco said. The cat purred even louder, clearly happy with the name.
"I was looking for something to give you. He approached me, but it wasn't my magic he was after," Harry said. "It was clear enough that he wasn't connecting to me, but what I carried with me."
Draco snorted. "You found me through my infusion, little one. That is a cleaver kitten," he said. He sat down and brought the little cat to his chest. They now had a familiar each and he felt satisfied. Maybe this was why he hadn't received a Stormraven after all. You could only have one familiar at a time. A raven lived for a long time. As did a kneazel, so this little guy would be long-lived. He leaned against Harry. This was a wonderful gift. "Thank you," he said.
They sat together for a while before they pulled back. Their sons were still in Italy, and they should get back to them.
…
It had been a long time coming, Harry had figured out how to do it. He placed a hand against the wards and pushed magic into them. The wards lit up and the light spread, showing the weave to everyone gathered. "Let's see if I can colour the separate layers as well," he said before moving back. He felt Draco's hands grab at his shoulders and steady him. This was quite draining, but he figured it would be worth it to show what Lord Sipala had been paying for.
"The golden weave is the original and the coloured layers around that is everything I have added to aid the original ward. I have adapted my weaving in quite a few places to make sure everything is working properly," Harry said.
"This is just beautiful," Isobelle said. She looked over at Harry. She had never considered just how much magic went into a ward before. Her father laid them, sure, but she hadn't realised just why he was so exhausted sometimes.
"It is," Emillios said. "Master Black is quite amazing at what he does." He was glad the rest of his family got a chance to see what he could. It made him glad to share the beauty of it.
Harry sighed as he dropped the magic. His eyes closed as he leaned heavily on Draco. He would need to take it easy for the rest of the day. It had been worth it, though. He was glad he had been able to show them. That was yet another ability he could claim that was not standard procedure, though. He would need to show his Master, or maybe Glint, once they got back home.
…
The halls of the hospital were quiet. Harry wandered down the rooms until he entered one. She was pale. He once blue hair had faded and starting growing out brow. Harry placed the flowers down next to her bed. "Thank you for helping me, Judy," he said softly. "Even if things did not work out. What you did for me was worth gold for my self-confidence." He looked at her face.
Her soft brown eyes opened to look at him. "Hey, Judy," he said. "Flynn told me. I don't know how you guys feel about him, and it doesn't matter to me. I'm going to get married in March. He is a rich snob with a kind heart. Suits me fine, since I'm a stuffy Lord."
Judy opened her mouth.
"Don't bother, love. I was caught in an explosion a few years ago. I can't hear. Don't force yourself to speak. You can mime, and I'll be able to tell what you are saying," Harry said kindly.
"You hurt?" Judy asked.
"Excruciating pain for a while. But I recovered," Harry said. "They say it is a brain tumour?"
Judy nodded. "Wish die," she said. "Hurts."
"Are you certain?" Harry asked.
Judy nodded again. Harry reached out. He wanted to know for certain, and he could gain that information if he wanted it. He delved into her mind and he could feel it. They were keeping her alive, but she was so tired. He pulled her consciousness towards him and moved her into a luminous ruin.
Judy turned towards him. "Harry?" she asked.
"You won't survive this. Your body is too fragile already, but I can ease your passing," Harry said.
"When Flynn said you had power?" Judy said.
"He was right, and I could have killed him easily. Having the power to do something and the will to do something are two very different things, though, Judy," Harry said. "Magic is real. I am a Mage, and I can do a lot, but I cannot save you."
Judy nodded slowly. She looked around. "Show me," she said.
"Do you want reality or just things that are real?" Harry asked. "I have been through a lot. My memories alone are intense."
Judy looked at him. "Show me," she said.
Harry smiled at her as he brought her into his past. He showed her what his life had been like with no exceptions since she would die either way. "Good night, Judy. Sleep well."
Harry took a deep breath as he moved back to his body. He blinked slowly. Nurses came running in, and he moved out of the way. He spoke to a bunch of people as they tried to figure out what had happened. Since she had been dying and there was absolutely no evidence of foul play, they couldn't accuse him of anything. Not that anyone was even trying. It was just sad that she was so young.
Harry backed out of the room eventually. Teddy and Scorpius were starting school again soon. He needed to pick up a few things for them. He headed out, leaving the hospital behind, before Judy's friends showed up. He did not what to meet them again.
