CHAPTER 49: THE WEIGHT OF THE PAST
Who am I?
Who do I want to be?
He had no answers, but he knew that something had to change. Maybe Harry was right. Maybe it was time to stop running from the truth. But facing it, confronting the shadows of the past... that would take time. And courage.
Adrian stopped outside his room, his hand resting on the doorknob. He hesitated for a moment, then walked in, deciding that tonight, at least, he wouldn't bury everything under layers of indifference. He sat down at his desk, looking at the parchment scattered with half-written letters and notes—some for school, some for himself. His fingers hovered over the quill, unsure of where to start, but he knew one thing for certain.
Lily looked at James, a bittersweet smile forming on her face as she wiped away the last of her tears. "I still don't understand how we got here, James. I've missed so much time. Harry... Adrian... they're so different now. I feel like I've lost them, and yet, they're right here with us."
James took her hands in his, his expression softening with understanding. "Lily, you've been through more than most people could handle. And Harry—well, Harry's a tough one. He's not going to let anything tear the bond between you two apart. He loves you, and that's not something that changes overnight, no matter what's happened."
"But James..." Lily shook her head, looking down at her hands. "Adrian's so angry, and Harry... He worships me, yes, but there's this... this distance between us. A wall that wasn't there before. How do I even begin to fix this?"
James leaned back against the bed, pulling her down with him. "We start by being here, together, for them. You know Harry, and I know Adrian—he's not the same boy who left when you... when you went into that coma. We both know that. But we're all still family. And family doesn't give up on each other. We don't."
Lily sighed deeply, leaning her head on his shoulder. "I want to fix it, James. I want to be there for them. But I'm scared I've done too much damage already."
"No," James replied firmly. "You haven't done any damage. Not as long as we're here to show them we care. Look, it's not going to be easy. But nothing worth having is ever easy, right?"
Lily smiled faintly, resting against him. "I just wish I'd been there sooner. I wish I'd known what they were going through."
James stroked her hair, his tone gentle. "None of us could have known. We do the best we can with what we have. And now we have a chance to make it right. That's what matters."
They sat in silence for a few moments, both lost in their thoughts. Finally, Lily spoke, her voice small but full of determination.
"Harry and Adrian may be different, but they're still my boys. And I'm not going to stop trying to make it right."
James kissed the top of her head, nodding in agreement. "That's the spirit. We'll help them find their way, together. I know we can."
Meanwhile, downstairs, Adrian stood at the foot of the stairs, his mind racing. He hadn't expected to overhear anything, but he had—his mother's sobs, his father's reassurances. And now, more than ever, he understood just how much they had been through, how much they had sacrificed. But what did that mean for him? For Harry? He didn't have the answers. Not yet.
His hand gripped the railing as he stared at the stairs leading up to the room his parents were in. He should go back to his room, try to get some sleep, but he felt a compulsion to move forward—to confront whatever it was that had been festering in his chest for years. He didn't know how to fix things, but perhaps, just maybe, he could start by being honest with himself.
Adrian exhaled slowly, the weight of the situation finally settling in. His eyes flickered toward the door of Harry's room. He had so much he still didn't understand, so much to learn. But maybe, just maybe, Harry would have the answers he needed. Maybe it was time to stop being angry and start being something better.
Before he could make up his mind, the door to Lily and James's room opened slightly, and Harry stepped out. The two brothers locked eyes for a moment, neither saying a word. But in that moment, it felt like everything that had been left unsaid between them was finally coming to the surface.
"Harry," Adrian said, breaking the silence, his voice rough with emotion, "I... I don't know how to fix this. How to fix us."
Harry took a step forward, his gaze steady and unflinching. "I don't know either, Adrian. But we'll figure it out. Together."
Adrian nodded, the weight of those words settling in. For the first time in a long while, he didn't feel so alone.
The air in the hallway was thick with unspoken words as Harry and Adrian stood facing each other. The tension was palpable, but it wasn't the usual animosity that had marked their past interactions. It was something different—something raw, like the silent understanding that they had both been hurt, both had carried burdens too heavy to talk about. But now, they were here. And it wasn't just about the past; it was about trying to make sense of the present and what the future could look like.
Adrian shifted uneasily, rubbing the back of his neck. "I don't... I don't know what I'm supposed to do, Harry. I've always been told to be strong, to fight for everything, but... I'm just so tired of it. Tired of fighting with everyone, including you."
Harry's expression softened, the hard edge in his eyes fading. "I get it, Adrian. It's exhausting, isn't it? Trying to be something you're not, trying to live up to expectations that weren't even your own." He paused, searching Adrian's face for some sign of agreement. "We've been caught in this endless cycle, but maybe... maybe we don't have to keep doing it."
Adrian let out a long breath, eyes flickering away from Harry's gaze. "It's not just about the fighting, Harry. It's about what I've become. You don't even know the things I've done, the things I've... I've said to people."
Harry stepped forward, his voice low but firm. "I don't care about the past anymore, Adrian. I care about who you're gonna be. And if you're ready to change, to be someone better, then I'll help you. But you have to want it too."
Adrian looked up at him, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and hope. "You'd actually help me? After everything?"
Harry nodded. "You're my brother. That's what family does, even when we don't always get along."
For a moment, the world seemed to stop. Adrian felt a strange weight lifting off his shoulders, as if all the pent-up frustration, the anger, and the guilt that had been building inside him for years were finally starting to unravel. But it wasn't gone completely. Not yet. There were still so many things to work through.
"I don't know how to make things right," Adrian admitted quietly, his voice cracking slightly. "I don't know where to start."
"Start by being honest with yourself," Harry said, his voice gentle but with a conviction that Adrian hadn't heard from him in years. "You don't have to have all the answers right now. Just take it one step at a time. And when you're ready, I'll be here."
Adrian swallowed hard, his throat tight. "I don't deserve this, Harry. I've been so horrible to you."
"Maybe," Harry said, his tone thoughtful, "but everyone deserves a second chance. Especially family."
Adrian looked down, the words sinking in. His heart ached with the weight of them, but at the same time, there was something else—something like relief, mixed with guilt. He wasn't sure if he was ready to face everything just yet, but Harry was giving him an opening, a lifeline that he hadn't expected.
"I'll try," Adrian said, finally meeting Harry's gaze again. "I'll try to do better."
"That's all I'm asking for," Harry said with a small smile, his eyes warm with understanding. "Now, let's go get some sleep. Tomorrow's a new day."
As Harry turned to leave, Adrian hesitated for a moment before calling out softly, "Harry?"
Harry paused, turning back with a questioning look.
"I... I'm sorry," Adrian said, his voice shaky. "For everything."
Harry's smile widened slightly. "It's alright, Adrian. It's all gonna be alright."
With that, the two brothers made their way down the hall, neither of them fully knowing what the future would hold, but both of them ready to face it together. As they reached their respective rooms, there was a sense of quiet peace between them. It wasn't fixed, not yet, but it was a start. And sometimes, a start was all you needed.
Meanwhile, in their room, Lily and James exchanged a look that spoke volumes. James pulled her close again, his hands gentle on her shoulders. "Do you feel that, Lily? They're getting there. Slowly, but they're getting there."
Lily nodded, wiping away the last of her tears. "I hope so, James. I hope so. They've both been through so much. I just want them to know they're not alone anymore."
"They know, darling," James said softly, kissing her forehead. "They know."
Lily gave him a stern look over the rim of her cup. "Not so fast, young man," she said, raising an eyebrow. "You're not off the hook just yet."
Harry gave a half-grin. "Worth a shot, right?"
"Absolutely not," Lily continued. "You're still grounded for the tournament incident, Harry. It's not just about what you did, but about the fact that you didn't tell me. You're not invincible, and you know that. There are consequences to actions, even if they're part of something bigger. You're my son, and I want you to make better choices. But... I understand why you did it. Just promise me you won't keep things like this from me again."
Harry nodded, the slight shift in his expression showing that he was genuinely considering her words. "I promise, Mum. I won't keep things from you."
Lily softened at his response, the tension in her shoulders easing. "That's all I ask. Just... think things through next time, okay?"
"Okay," Harry said, picking up his fork again but not immediately returning to his food. There was something about the conversation that made him feel like there was a weight lifting off his chest, even though it was still there, lingering between them. It was the first time in a long time that they were having a conversation like this—about real things. He wasn't used to it, but he liked it.
"By the way," James spoke up, breaking the quiet moment, "Adrian, are you sure you want to keep betting against Harry? He's a little... unpredictable with that wand of his."
Adrian rolled his eyes but couldn't hide the smirk that tugged at his lips. "Oh, I learned my lesson," he said. "You're right, James. I won't bet against him anymore. Not unless I want to lose more Galleons."
Sirius leaned back in his chair, his face full of exaggerated seriousness. "Adrian, don't feel bad. I was thinking of starting a new gambling enterprise. I can call it 'Bet Against Harry Potter and Lose Your Fortune.'"
Adrian snorted, glancing over at Harry. "I should've known you'd end up with a talent for defying the odds, Harry."
"Hey, it's not just me," Harry said with a grin. "I have good teachers." He looked over at Sirius, who gave him a knowing wink.
Lily rolled her eyes but chuckled under her breath. "You're all impossible."
Just as they settled into a comfortable rhythm of eating, Dobby appeared with more breakfast platters, his ears twitching as he looked at the group. "Dobby has brought food! Dobby is happy to serve!"
"Thanks, Dobby," Harry said with a warm smile.
Sirius raised his cup, taking a long sip of coffee. "You know, I've been thinking, Harry, you've made a lot of progress lately. With Adrian, with the whole 'not getting into constant trouble' thing. What's next for you? What's your plan now that you're home?"
Harry's smile faltered slightly, and for a moment, his eyes seemed to drift off into the distance, lost in thought. He hadn't really thought that far ahead. There were so many things happening all at once: his relationship with Adrian, the ongoing mystery of the war, his complicated history with Dumbledore... It was all so overwhelming.
"I don't really know, Sirius," Harry said slowly. "I'm just trying to figure it out. I've got a lot on my plate right now."
"Yeah, well," Sirius said with a wink, "don't let it get to you too much. I'm sure you'll figure it out. And remember, you've got your old godfather here if you need some advice... even if it's about matters of the heart."
James shot him a look. "Not the heart talk again, Pads."
"Ah, but it's always relevant," Sirius grinned. "Harry might not need to hear it now, but someday he'll thank me."
Harry shook his head, laughing despite himself. "I don't know what's worse—the idea of you giving me relationship advice or thinking that Adrian might be more mature than I am."
Adrian chuckled, raising his glass. "Hey, no need to insult me. I'm just here to enjoy my breakfast and lose my money in peace."
As the laughter settled, the mood lightened, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Harry felt like he was part of something—something whole, something real. He didn't know what the future held, but for once, he was willing to face it head-on. With family. With friends. And, just maybe, with a few more lessons about what it meant to be truly, fully alive.
"So," Harry finally said, taking a deep breath, "anyone else want to place a bet on my next trick?"
Lily raised an eyebrow. "You're not using that wand for any more mischief, are you?"
Lily's voice echoed through the kitchen as she shouted at James and Sirius, who were now frantically trying to defend themselves. "You two are unbelievable!" she cried, hands on her hips. "You both need to learn when to stop with your jokes!"
Sirius raised his hands in mock surrender. "We were just kidding, Lily! You know I'd never insult you like that!"
James was nodding in agreement. "Right! Just a joke, love. We were just—"
"Just what? Insulting me behind my back?" Lily crossed her arms, a smirk tugging at her lips despite the stern tone in her voice. "Well, I'll have you know, I do know how to make you both regret it."
Harry, trying to hold back his laughter, leaned in to whisper to Adrian, who had his hand over his mouth in an attempt to stifle his chuckles. "This is better than any prank I've ever seen," he said, watching the chaos unfold in front of them.
Adrian couldn't help but laugh quietly, his eyes glinting with amusement. "You really know how to keep things interesting, don't you?"
"Hey, I'm just taking advantage of a family tradition," Harry grinned, "Dad and Sirius have been teasing Mum like this for years. I'm just... continuing the legacy."
Lily shot a glance at Harry, her expression softening. "You're all going to pay for this, just you wait. You won't be laughing for long."
Harry winked at Adrian before turning his attention back to Lily. "I'm sure we'll all get along just fine, Mum," he said innocently, his grin widening. "After all, you've got the best of both worlds now: a manipulative son and two men who think they can escape without consequences."
Lily raised an eyebrow, clearly amused now. "I should've known better than to fall for that puppy-dog look, Harry."
Sirius, unable to resist the urge to tease, leaned over to James. "You know, mate, I think Harry's learning from the best."
James groaned, shaking his head. "Oh no, not this again. I'm not taking the fall for his pranks."
"But you are taking the fall for mine," Sirius replied with a grin. "All that weight-gaining talk was your doing, remember?"
"Stop while you're ahead," James grumbled, though the corner of his mouth twitched upward in a smile.
Lily finally softened, her anger giving way to a small laugh. "Fine, fine, you win this round. But mark my words, there will be consequences for both of you."
"Of course, Mum," Harry said with a teasing grin, clearly loving every second of it. "But for now, I think we can all agree that breakfast is the best time for family bonding."
Adrian snorted at the word "bonding," and Harry shot him a quick, playful look.
Lily sighed but couldn't hide the amusement in her eyes. "You're all impossible."
"Impossible to love?" Harry asked innocently.
Lily smiled, reaching across the table to ruffle his hair. "Impossible to resist."
As the morning continued with more lighthearted teasing and playful banter, Harry couldn't help but feel grateful. Despite the chaos, despite the mistakes, they were together. And for the first time in a long while, that felt like enough.
Adrian walked slowly out of Dumbledore's office, feeling a bit disoriented by the conversation. He had known Harry was angry with him, but hearing that Harry seemed to worship Lily—his own mother—was something he hadn't expected. It was strange to think of Harry as someone who would bend to anyone's will, even Lily's. The Harry he knew had always been independent and determined to chart his own course, not someone to simply follow orders.
He headed down the corridor, reflecting on his brother's behavior. What had happened during those years Harry had been away? Adrian didn't know the full story, but it seemed like Harry had become far more attached to their mother than he ever remembered. But how could Harry be so different from the person Adrian had grown up with?
As Adrian rounded the corner, he ran into Rose, who was also walking with purpose, her face scrunched in thought. She stopped when she saw him, and Adrian noticed a flicker of something behind her eyes. "You okay?" she asked, her tone casual but with an undercurrent of concern.
"Yeah, just thinking," Adrian replied. "About Harry. It's... he's changed. He's different now."
Rose raised an eyebrow, clearly not expecting him to open up. "Different how?"
"He's... I don't know, Rose. He's not the same. Mum must have really had an effect on him these past few days," Adrian said, his voice tinged with confusion. "He's so much more attached to her than I remember. It's like he's worshipping her or something. I mean, I know she's his mum, but this... I don't know."
Rose looked thoughtful for a moment, her brow furrowing. "Maybe it's because he missed her. Or maybe because he's finally able to have her back in his life. You didn't see the way she looked at him, Adrian. She's still his mother, and Harry... he's always craved that kind of connection."
Adrian sighed, the words weighing heavily on him. "I guess. But it feels like he's pushing everyone else away for her, and I don't get it. What happened to the Harry who used to push back, the one who wouldn't let anyone get too close?"
Rose nodded slowly. "People change, Adrian. Sometimes they don't even realize it. But I think if you give him time, you'll see that he's still the same Harry underneath. He just... needs a little more time to figure things out."
Adrian nodded, not entirely convinced but also not entirely sure how to respond. "I hope you're right," he said, then turned and began walking toward the common room, his thoughts still heavy.
Meanwhile, back in Dumbledore's office, the headmaster sat at his desk, twirling a pen between his fingers as he mused on Adrian's words. There was certainly something interesting about Harry's newfound attachment to his mother. Dumbledore couldn't help but wonder what else had transpired during Harry's time away and what it meant for the future. Perhaps it was time to pay a little more attention to the dynamics between the Potters—and, more specifically, between Harry and Adrian.
"That's a plus," Ron said, grinning. "So, if you're not here to complain about your mum or Harry, what's going on with you? You look like you've got a lot on your mind."
Adrian paused for a moment, thinking. The truth was, he had been distracted by his own thoughts all day. There was something off about the way Harry had been acting, something that made Adrian uneasy, but he didn't quite understand it yet. "I don't know. I think I'm just... trying to figure out Harry. He's been so different lately. I don't know what happened between him and Mum, but it's like... he's just so dedicated to making her happy now. It's almost like he's... worshipping her or something."
Hermione frowned, her brow furrowing in thought. "You don't think it's because he wants her approval, do you? That might be the case if he's just returned from... well, wherever he was all those years. He might want to make up for lost time."
Adrian glanced at Hermione. "Maybe, but it's more than that. It's like he's... obsessed with it. Even when he's around us, it's like he can't stop thinking about making Mum happy. He's changed, Hermione. And I'm not sure I like it."
"Adrian, I think you're just overthinking it," Ron said, waving a hand dismissively. "Harry's always been like that with his parents, even before all the weird stuff happened. Maybe it's just... more obvious now. You know, since you've been gone and everything."
"I don't know," Adrian muttered. "It feels like he's... putting on a different face or something. And it's weird, because we used to be so close. Now, it's like he's pulling away."
Hermione crossed her arms, looking thoughtful. "Could it be that Harry's been carrying something for so long that he doesn't know how to share it? Maybe... maybe the way he's been acting is his way of coping. He might have a lot of emotions that he's not sure how to deal with."
Adrian didn't respond immediately, digesting her words. "I suppose... I just don't get how he can act like everything is fine when it's so clear that something's off. It's like he's pretending everything is perfect, but I know he's hiding something."
"Well," Ron said, his tone lightening a bit, "if you ever want someone to talk about it with, we're here. No matter what Harry's up to, we're still your mates, Adrian."
Adrian smiled faintly, grateful for the reassurance. "Thanks, Ron. Hermione. I'll figure it out. I just... need to think about it a bit more."
As the conversation drifted to other topics, Adrian's mind kept returning to Harry. There was something going on beneath the surface that neither of them had fully explored yet, and Adrian couldn't shake the feeling that Harry's devotion to their parents was more than just a normal desire for approval. Something had changed, and until Adrian could figure it out, he wasn't sure how to feel about it.
