Happy new year's my dear readers and what better to kick of the start of the new year than the start of the Kokabiel Arc. Hope you enjoy it :)

Kokabiel Arc Chapter 21: A New Threat Arises

Several days had passed since the battle against the invading fallen angels and stray exorcists. When all the residents of Kuoh finally woke up, their memories had already been altered by Jiro, so they had no recollection of seeing the fallen angels, stray exorcists, or the crimson dragon gang members fighting against them. Instead, they were led to believe that a powerful earthquake had caused the damage to their homes and other buildings and knocked them all out. With the vast resources of the Gremory family at Rias's fingertips, everything was already in the process of being repaired by the time the residents had woken up, and soon the town returned to its normal state.

Raynare and Asia had settled into their home at the abandoned church. Asia had chosen one of the rooms in the basement and had already set up all her stuff, putting all her clothes in an old wardrobe that was there. Since the room already had a bed, she put her futon in the wardrobe for safekeeping and hung her crucifix on the wall above the bed. On her bedside table, she kept her Bible and holy water under her table lamp, along with two framed pictures: one of her standing between Jiro and Irina at their house, and the other of her next to Raynare in front of the church.

Raynare, who already had a room set up there, had no need to set up anything. As for the battle-torn main hall of the church, being the mischievous one she is, Raynare brainwashed several cleaning service workers and had them clean up the church's main hall on the surface, much to Asia's dismay and Raynare's amusement. As the days passed, they lived together, watching TV, playing board games, shopping together, and cooking together (Asia, doing most of the cooking while Raynare helped, since she wasn't a very good cook compared to Asia, who has experience from her time as a nun). As the days passed, they continued to bond, eventually looking more like sisters, much to their delight.

Issei, Matsuda, Motohama, Aika, and the rest of the Crimson Dragons visited Asia to have their injuries from fighting the fallen angels and stray exorcists healed. Once there, Raynare began to strangely take a liking to Issei and relentlessly flirted with and teased him, much to his embarrassment and somewhat arousal at her overly revealing leather outfit, much to the annoyance of the pervert duo and Aika's amusement. Soon after, Matsuda and Motohama returned to school normally while Issei and Aika finally transferred into Kuoh Academy and into Rias and Akeno's class, much to Rias's and somewhat Issei's delight as the other girls (including Akeno and Aika) began to gossip about them, much to their embarrassment, while the guys (including Matsuda and Motohama in their own class) cursed Issei out of jealousy, much to his and also Rias's annoyance. After school, the four salamanders would meet up with the rest of their gang, and they would engage in rigorous training, hoping to impress Jiro with their growth and improvements.

The student council continued their work after school, even when all the students and staff members had left. They would then have mini training sessions to improve their abilities and teamwork skills. Strangely, they also became closer with Irina, despite being conflicting existences. This development brought Jiro both delight and some relief. Koneko enjoyed sweets with her, Kiba discussed swordplay, and Rias and Akeno talked about making plans to go shopping together at some point.

Jiro and Irina continued living together and thoroughly enjoyed their time together. They would spend most of the school day together, aside from when they had separate classes and when Irina was engaging in kendo club activities with her friends Murayama and Katase. After school, they would go places like the cafe and arcades and love every minute of it. The two had become closer and closer with each passing day, and although they either hadn't noticed it or simply didn't want to admit it out of embarrassment, they had become more affectionate, forward, and handsy with one another, such as constantly holding hands whenever they went places and at home would find themselves hugging and cuddling whether it would be on the couch or even in the bath. They had started to feel certain feelings and attraction towards one another that neither of them understood, although they did admit it felt nice, even if it was slightly embarrassing.

Before everyone knew it, another week had passed and it was once again Friday. Jiro and Irina were walking home together as usual after enjoying some parfaits at their favorite cafe. They walked in peace, with Irina's right arm wrapped around his left and her left hand intertwined with his left hand.

"Wow, I can't believe it's already Friday. To think it's been 5 days since we fought the fallen angels," Irina said with a playful smile, secretly enjoying the feeling of Jiro's muscular arm. Jiro chuckled at her words.

"Heh, heh, I know, right? And tomorrow, I'll call the student council, Raynare, and Asia over for our planned discussion." Jiro said as Irina looked at him in anticipation.

"Sure, can you explain what this mysterious plan you keep mentioning is?" Irina asked, nudging his shoulder with her chin, secretly dying of curiosity.

"I will do it when everyone is together tomorrow. I ain't about to explain twice." Jiro said, making Irina pout and make a "Hrm" sound.

"Heh, heh, C'mon, that expression is way too cute," Jiro said teasingly, making her blush.

"Shut up, let's just get home," Irina said, blushing furiously as she walked faster, pulling Jiro along as he laughed.

They made it home and once there, they set their school bags down. Irina approached Jiro, putting her hands on his chest. "So, what do we do first, dinner or a bath?" Irina asked, resting her head on his chest.

"I'd say a bath first. You must be sweaty after kendo club activities." Jiro said, wrapping his arms around her.

Irina nods and looks up at him. "That sounds pretty nice," Irina said, smiling at him as they both get lost in each other's eyes while blushing. They then start to bring their faces closer as their blushes deepen.

"But first, we need to talk," said a mysterious feminine voice, startling both of them. They quickly pulled apart and looked around for the source of it. Irina recognized the voice as she said, "Wait, I know that voice."

As they looked around, a golden magic circle suddenly appeared in the middle of the living room, and out from it emerged none other than the archangel Gabriel herself. She had shining blonde hair that went down her back, and emerald green eyes. She wore bright white robes that emphasized her voluptuous figure. Her most distinguishing feature was her 12 pure golden wings sprouting from her back, and a bright golden halo above her head. She looked at them with a warm smile that emphasized her beauty, leaving them shocked by her sudden appearance, especially Irina. The last thing she expected was for an archangel, let alone Gabriel, the leader of heaven herself, to appear unannounced in their home.

Irina stares in shock, her eyes wide as saucers, at Gabriel. Her whole body tenses, her heart racing with a mix of surprise and nervousness.

"L-Lady Gabriel?! What... what are you... doing here?" Irina stammered out shakily, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Fufu, hi there, Irina. It's been quite a while, sweetie." Gabriel said, giggling while smiling an Akeno-style smile.

Jiro looks at her with wide eyes as he takes in her appearance. 'So this is Gabriel? That amount of holy power is insane, and I see that her being called "the most beautiful woman in heaven" wasn't just an exaggeration. I'm sure she can give Aphrodite a run for her money in terms of looks.' Jiro thinks to himself.

Gabriel turns her gaze towards Jiro, her smile never faltering as she looks at Jiro with a kind and gentle expression. "Yes, that is indeed me, and I appreciate the kind compliment," she said, speaking in a gentle yet firm tone, her voice carrying the weight and authority of an archangel.

Jiro looked at her, his eyes widening slightly at the fact that she had just read his mind. "You look surprised, young one, but rest assured, I mean no harm," Gabriel said, smiling reassuringly, still speaking in her gentle yet authoritative tone.

"Uh, yeah, I'm Jiro by the way," Jiro said, scratching the back of his head.

"Ah, yes, I am aware of who you are, Jiro Natsuo, the current possessor of the Boosted Gear and the Red Dragon Emperor, capable of using Dragon Force at will. Your exploits have not gone unnoticed by us in Heaven. It is no mere coincidence that I am here in your humble abode." Gabriel said, nodding slightly, her smile turning slightly amused at the familiarity of his name.

"Wait, you know that much about me?" Jiro asked, taken aback by her knowledge of him.

Gabriel nodded once again, her smile never faltering. "Indeed, your actions and achievements over the last decade have been quite remarkable, and we in Heaven have been watching with great interest. It has caught everyone's attention, especially mine." Gabriel said, speaking in a calm, patient tone, as if addressing a child.

"Now, you both are most likely wondering why I'm here, and that is to tell you there is some trouble brewing in this country," Gabriel said to both of them, her words bringing a sudden serious tone to the room.

Irina's eyes widened as she looked at Gabriel. "Trouble...? What kind of trouble?" Irina asked, her expression a mix of concern and surprise.

"The leader-class fallen angel Kokabiel has gone rogue and is active in Japan." Gabriel said, her tone now serious.

Jiro and Irina froze, the gravity of the situation weighing heavily on them. Irina's mind reeled as she processed the information.

"Kokabiel... the leader-class Fallen Angel?! Here, in Japan?" Irina asked, shocked.

"Yeah, I'd like to know what that lunatic is doing in my country," Jiro said with an eyebrow raised. While he expected Kokabiel to stir up more trouble after he and the others derailed his followers' mission to get Twilight Healing and Lullaby, Jiro wasn't expecting the man himself to take action personally.

Gabriel gazes at him with a sympathetic expression, understanding his frustration at Kokabiel's presence in his homeland.

"We are uncertain of his exact motives. It's most likely another plan to restart the Great War between the three great powers, but it is clear that he is up to no good. Heaven and the fallen angels have been trying to keep an eye on him, but he has been elusive and unpredictable. That is why I've come to both of you for a favor, which is to inform and recruit Irina and to ask of you to lend us your strength, Red Dragon Emperor." Gabriel said, hopeful of his answer.

"Say no more, we'll blow him away, because I can do that without any problem," Jiro said with a confident smile. Irina looked at him, her eyes wide with worry at his statement, but she didn't want to interrupt.

Gabriel chuckles lightly at his enthusiasm, clearly amused by his eagerness to fight. She gives him a knowing look and speaks, her voice firm yet not scolding.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm, it is not that simple. Kokabiel is not your average Fallen Angel. He is powerful and cunning. Taking him on alone would be a difficult task, if not impossible. Gabriel said with a hint of concern.

"I know he's powerful and cunning, but then again, so am I. Trust me, I can take him," Jiro said. Gabriel gazed at him with a mixture of respect and worry. She could sense his determination and confidence, and while she admired his spirit, she also knew the risks.

"You have courage and skill, Red Dragon Emperor, but don't underestimate Kokabiel. He is a leader-class Fallen Angel for a reason. He has been around for centuries, gathering strength and experience. Taking him on alone would be dangerous, even for someone like you," Gabriel said, looking at him with a contemplative and worried expression, but a hint of respect in her eyes.

"I have no doubt about your abilities, and you may surpass our expectations. But please, do not go into this confrontation alone. You will need allies and support. One cannot do everything by oneself." Gabriel said, still slightly concerned.

"I know, I have a few like Irina, for instance. And the devils that live in this town and go to our school, our friends Asia Argento and Fallen Angel Raynare, who live in the abandoned church on the edge of town, and maybe even the angel exorcist with a holy sword approaching this town." Jiro said, pointing in a seemingly random direction with a knowing grin.

Gabriel's eyebrows raised in surprise that he was able to sense the presence of her underling, the approaching angel exorcist. "Oh? It seems you're more perceptive than I thought. Yes, there is an angel exorcist approaching, but how did you... sense her presence?" Gabriel asked, genuinely curious.

"Never underestimate a dragon's senses," I just got that natural skill. Jiro said with a somewhat prideful smile.

Gabriel laughed, clearly impressed and amused by his answer. She nodded, her expression holding a hint of awe. "It seems I'll have to keep that in mind. Your senses and skills truly are exceptional, Jiro. Few have such acute perception," Gabriel said, and then looked at him thoughtfully for a moment, a small smile on her face.

"You have a lot of potential, and I see a strong sense of justice in you. I have a feeling that you and the angel exorcist will get along quite well." Gabriel said, with a hopeful smile.

"I hope so. What's her name, by the way? I can tell it's a female based on the aura, and I can sense she's carrying a powerful holy sword." Jiro said, looking in the direction he had pointed to a minute ago.

Gabriel nodded with a knowing smile. "Oh yes, I almost forgot. I'm sure Irina will be quite happy to hear this. Her name is Xenovia Quarta, and yes, she does indeed carry a powerful Holy Sword." Gabriel said with a hint of pride in her voice.

Irina, who had been silent the whole time, perks up at the name. "Wait, Xenovia-chan is coming?! Really?!" Irina asked, her voice filled with surprise and excitement at being able to see one of her best friends again, so soon.

Gabriel giggled at her excitement. "Yes, she is. When she heard what the situation was and found out it was happening in Japan, she refused to stand by and demanded to be dispatched here, knowing it's your homeland, so I and the church obliged." Gabriel said, to which Irina smiled warmly, her heart swelling with affection that her friend would go to such lengths for her.

"I see, Xenovia, eh? You said she was your training partner in England, right?" Jiro asked, to which Irina nodded firmly.

"Well then, I'm glad I finally get to meet her. Alright, leave everything to me; I've got things under control. I was already going to have everyone gather here tomorrow, so Xenovia can join in. I'll get us ready to face Kokabiel." Jiro said with a confident smile.

Gabriel nods while smiling. Her expression is still serious, yet there's a trace of reassurance in her eyes. "Very well. I'll leave it in your hands. Remember, though, to be cautious. Kokabiel is powerful and dangerous. We have faith in your abilities, but don't underestimate him." Gabriel said, then glanced at Irina, a small flicker of concern crossing her eyes.

"And Irina, I expect you to aid Jiro to the best of your abilities," Gabriel said, to which Irina nodded.

"I will do my best, Lady Gabriel. You can trust me to support Jiro. We'll overcome this challenge together," Irina said, looking at Gabriel with a determined look in her eyes, her voice firm and resolute.

Gabriel smiled at her response. "I'm happy to hear that, after all, love is the greatest bond between people, especially childhood friends like you two. I'm sure that can lead to great teamwork between you." Gabriel said teasingly.

Jiro and Irina blush furiously at Gabriel's teasing remark. They glance at each other for a second and then turn away. "N-no, we're n-nothing like that at all, w-we're just childhood friends!" Irina said, looking down slightly while fidgeting with her fingers.

"Y-yeah, what s-she said. But you're right; the bond between people, especially when it's built on trust, is quite powerful. We will work together with everyone else." Jiro said, regaining his composure and fighting off his blush.

Gabriel giggled at their flustered expressions and then looked at Jiro, her gaze serious yet caring. "Jiro, I entrust Irina to your care. She is a valuable angel and almost like a daughter to me. I know she is strong and kind, but sometimes forgets her own limitations and can be somewhat bossy, stubborn, and overly worried at times. I ask you to watch over her, keep her safe, and support her in the upcoming battle. Can I count on you?

"Of course, you can." Jiro said as Irina turned away in embarrassment. Gabriel nodded approvingly, a hint of relief on her face.

"Thank you, Jiro. I knew I could count on you. Irina might be stubborn, but she's also sincere and loyal. Treat her well, and she'll always be there for you," Gabriel said, smiling warmly.

"Heh, don't worry about a thing; she's stuck with me," Jiro said, putting an arm around her shoulder.

"H-hey, I can take care of myself, you know!" Irina said, giving you a pouty look, but a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips.

Irina turns away slightly, her cheeks still flushed from embarrassment. She was a bit annoyed at being talked about like she is a child, but she can't help but feel relieved that someone like Jiro will be looking out for her and enjoyed the feeling of his arm around her.

Gabriel chuckles and smiles warmly at the sight of the two, obviously amused by Irina's protest and hoping to see their relationship blossom and grow while remembering how much Irina used to talk about Jiro almost constantly. She then raises her hand, summoning another golden magic circle beneath her feet.

"It seems you two have it all under control. I shall take my leave then. Remember what I said, and be careful." Gabriel said as she stepped into the magic circle and disappeared in a flash of light.

They looked at the spot where Gabriel had left for a few seconds until Jiro broke the silence. "Well, that was something. It looks like we have a fight ahead of us," Jiro said, turning towards Irina.

Irina lets out a sigh, her mind still processing the discussion with Gabriel. When Jiro mentions the upcoming fight, her expression grows serious once more. "Yeah, we do. Kokabiel isn't just a challenge; he's a serious threat. We need to be prepared. But...we can do it, right?"

"Of course we can. With the plans I have, which we'll discuss with the others tomorrow, we'll definitely be able to pull through." Jiro said, to which Irina nodded.

She then remembered Jiro's words at the start of the conversation and became serious again. "And don't you even think about it, mister. You're not taking on Kokabiel alone. We're all helping you fight. Got that?" Irina said firmly, stepping closer to Jiro, her face inches from his, glaring up at him while pointing her finger in his face.

"Yeah, yeah, I got it," Jiro said, with a sheepish smile. His face heated up at her close proximity as he tried to fight off a blush.

"And I'm sure we can count on you two as well." Jiro said, turning to an opened window where Raynare and Asia were eavesdropping, as Irina looked at them in surprise.

Raynare and Asia jump, their eyes wide as they realize they've been caught eavesdropping. They exchange sheepish glances, looking slightly embarrassed at getting caught. Raynare quickly regains her composure.

"W-we weren't eavesdropping." Raynare tried to act nonchalant. Asia, on the other hand, just looked guilty and lowered her head.

"Yeah, sure you weren't, but I'm sure you heard everything Gabriel said." Jiro said with a playful smirk.

Raynare rolls her eyes, realizing there's no use in denying it. "Okay, fine. We heard everything. But we were just curious, that's all." Raynare said, crossing her arms under her chest and nodding begrudgingly.

"We were just stopping by for a visit, then we saw the three of you talking and... we couldn't help ourselves," Asia said shyly, to which Jiro and Irina chuckled.

Raynare then thinks back to their interaction and takes in seeing Gabriel for the first time. "Gabriel... So that was the Archangel Gabriel? The current leader of heaven? I have to admit, she was a lot... nicer than I expected. I heard high-ranking angels give off an aloof and distant air, but she was surprisingly gentle and kind." Raynare said, looking up in thought.

"Y-yes, she seemed so caring and warm. It's hard to believe she was the Lady Gabriel. I've only heard stories about her. I'm glad I finally got to see her in person. I can still feel her pure holy power and aura, and her beautiful face." Asia said, nodding in agreement, a small, dreamy smile on her face.

Irina puffed up her chest slightly, hearing their words. "Yeah, that's Lady Gabriel. She's strict and demanding when she needs to be, but she also has a soft, caring side. She's honestly like a mother figure to me." Irina said, a hint of pride in her voice.

Jiro chuckled at their interaction. "Heh, heh, anyway, I have to get dinner ready. We'll discuss the matter about Kokabiel tomorrow," Jiro said, to which Raynare and Asia nodded.

The two nodded and stepped back from the window. Asia got on Raynare's back, and they waved before flying off to the abandoned church. Jiro closed the window, locked it, and then turned to Irina.

"So, I know I said I gotta get dinner ready, but which do you want first; dinner or a bath?" Jiro asked, curiously.

Irina thinks for a second and answers, "Definitely a bath first. I'm quite sweaty from kendo club activities, like you said." Irina said, secretly just really wanting to bathe with Jiro.

"Heh, I thought so. Well then, how about after the bath, we have dinner, and then relax." Jiro said as they walked to the bathroom.

They proceeded with their plans and spent the rest of their evening in peace. However, their minds couldn't help but constantly flash back to Gabriel's teasing. They both repeatedly asked themselves if what they were feeling for the other was, in fact... love. They asked themselves this while stealing glances at each other, their eyes full of affection and longing. It was a feeling neither were familiar with, other than with family members, but they would work hard to figure out their feelings.

The next day

The day was now Saturday. Jiro and Irina had woken up and had breakfast. Jiro had contacted the student council about Xenovia's attendance, to which they were iffy about another angel coming to town, especially Kiba upon hearing she had a holy sword, but they decided to allow it since Xenovia was close friends with Irina. Jiro and Irina were now in the living room waiting for the others to arrive for their group discussion. As they waited, they killed time by engaging in an activity they both enjoyed, which was watching anime movies.

They were currently watching the film Your Name while sitting on the couch, leaning on each other. They continuously spared glances at each other while blushing slightly. The movie ends, and they sit there in silence for a few seconds, content to sit in each other's presence, until Jiro breaks the silence.

"Well, that was a good movie." Jiro said, turning to her with a smile.

"Yes, it was. I'm so glad they managed to find each other in the end," Irina said. Jiro nodded.

They continued to sit in silence, the atmosphere tense and slightly awkward. "Hey, uh, can I talk to you about something?" Jiro said, turning to her and making Irina look at him curiously.

"Huh, oh, sure," Irina said in anticipation.

They look at each other for a few seconds as Jiro contemplates his next words. As they look at each other, their heart rates increase drastically, and a blush creeps onto their cheeks. The atmosphere becomes more tense as Jiro tries to speak.

"Well, uh... I just... I just wanted to tell you... that..." Jiro said as both of their faces started to burn. Before Jiro could continue his sentence, they sensed Asia and Raynare nearby.

"Huh, I-I'll tell you later, seems everyones starting to arrive." Jiro said as he stood up and turned away to hide his blush. Irina did the same.

"O-ok, sure," Irina said as she also turned away with her hands on her cheeks.

Irina looks out the window and sees Asia and Raynare land a few feet away from their house. "O-oh, it's just Raynare and Asia-chan here. I think we'll have to wait for Rias and the others." Irina said as she fights off her blush.

"Yeah, it seems like it. Hmm, oh, looks like that Xenovia girl is almost here as well." Jiro said, turning in another direction, sensing her presence as Irina beamed in excitement. She and Jiro changed out of their sleepwear, Jiro into his usual punk outfit, and Irina into a white shoulderless, furled blouse, pink skirt, and white sneakers. They walked towards the front door to properly greet their friend with open arms.

Xenovia walked down the sidewalk to the house where Irina was currently living, having been given the address by Gabriel the previous day. She was wearing a white robe with blue highlights, with the hood over her head. She walked in silence, looking around and admiring the design and architecture of Japanese houses.

Xenovia approached the house, but she looked a little further ahead and saw two girls walking side by side. Her eyes widened as she noticed one of them was Asia Argento, the excommunicated nun who had been declared a heretic in Italy, and she sensed that the other girl was a fallen angel. Upon assessing who they were, Xenovia narrowed her eyes in irritation that a former holy maiden would fall to allying herself with a sinful fallen angel. She decided to mercy-kill Asia, believing that she would be forgiven for her sins and allowed into heaven. Xenovia unfurled her white wings, her halo appearing above her head, and drew her holy sword, pushing her cloak back to reveal her black, leather church battle suit. She flew at full speed towards Asia, too fast for her or Raynare to react.

Irina's eyes widened as she saw Xenovia make her aggressive move, her Holy Sword in hand. Panic and fear rushed through Irina's system in that instant.

"WAIT!!! XENOVIA-CHAN, STOP!!! DON'T DO IT!!!" Irina yells in panic. However, her words fall upon deaf ears, and Xenovia continues her determined charge towards Asia. Irina scrambles out the door, desperation written in her every move, trying to intercept Xenovia before she reaches Asia.

Seeing Xenovia's intentions, Jiro speeds past Irina at blinding speed out the door. He suddenly appears in front of Xenovia, knocking her sword out of her hand with his left hand, making it stick into the ground, and grabbing her neck with his right hand. He glares daggers directly into her eyes, his red eyes glowing under his bangs.

Irina runs up to them, her expression a mix of fear and concern. She goes up to Jiro and grabs his arm, holding Xenovia, and says, "H-hey! Jiro-kun, calm down!" in a pleading tone.

Xenovia's eyes widened in surprise and shock that he suddenly appeared before her, effortlessly disarming and grabbing her by the throat. The holy sword stuck into the ground, and she let out a strangled gasp as his grip tightened around her neck.

Xenovia's expression morphs into a mix of anger and bewilderment, her gaze locked with his as she realizes his intention to stop her from harming Asia. She grips and pulls on his wrist, trying to get free.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Jiro said in a low, threatening voice. "You could've killed her!! And here I thought angels don't kill humans!!" He summoned a flame in his left hand, and his red aura flared slightly, making Irina back away a bit.

Xenovia's expression hardens as his words hit. "I'm an angel exorcist, sent by the church and heaven to deal with devils, fallen angels, and heretics like Asia Argento over there. It's my duty to eliminate her, for the sake of humanity." Xenovia said, her eyes narrowing and voice tight with determination.

Xenovia glares right back at him, her expression unwavering, refusing to back down, despite the dangerous predicament she's currently in.

"Oh? I thought you were sent by the archangel Gabriel to help deal with Kokabiel, who's active in this country," Jiro said. Xenovia's eyes narrowed even further at his words, her grip tightening as his fingers dug slightly into her neck.

"I was sent here for both reasons. To deal with Kokabiel... and also to take care of Asia Argento, a heretic who fell to the enemy side. Killing two birds with one stone in the process." Xenovia said, her voice remained firm, her resolve unflappable, the steel in her gaze unwavering.

"She didn't fall to any enemy side. Your faction threw her out like trash just for trying to help someone in need, regardless of their race, and that fallen angel is a friend who lives here peacefully with her." Jiro said, venom in his voice as he gave her a wide-eyed glare.

Xenovia's heart clenched at his words, a flash of uncertainty passing through her eyes as his argument hit close to home. He had spoken the truth, a truth that Xenovia herself knew deep down. And yet, the teachings of her faction, the church, the dogma she had followed for so long, since her childhood, bound her.

"I... I know that. But... it doesn't change anything. The church's orders are absolute. Asia Argento defied them. She became a heretic. She... she must be punished." Xenovia said, trying to regain her unwavering expression.

"So she hadn't suffered enough?! For a long time, she had been used and abused after the church abandoned her. And now you, an angel, a being said to be the symbol of love and purity, and a being Asia had always admired, should punish a troubled young girl by ending her life." Jiro said, making Xenovia's eyes flicker as his words hit her conscience.

A maelstrom of inner conflict brewed within her, as his lecture, his plea, his accusation, hit her deeply. Her grip on his wrist tightened, her fingers digging into his hard skin. She started to realize the weight of her task, the brutality of it all.

"I... I don't... I can't..." Xenovia said, a waver in her voice as a hint of pain and doubt appeared in her eyes, giving away her internal battle. Jiro saw that his words were starting to take a toll on her resolve, loosened his grip slightly, and dissipated the flame in his left hand, bringing down his aura.

"And not only that, you realize if you actually killed her, a human, regardless of what she'd done, or what your motives were, you would've become a fallen angel yourself," Jiro said, making Xenovia flinch as he confronts her with the reality of the situation.

His words strike deeply, tearing through the flimsy veneer of righteousness and duty that she had surrounded herself with. The weight of her actions, the thought of becoming a fallen angel herself and seemingly betraying her faction, much like an old friend of hers, and betraying Irina, hangs heavy in the air, a cold realization gripping her heart.

"I... I know. I knew what I was doing. I knew the implications, the consequences. But... but I was following orders. My job, my duty, it's... it's all I have." Xenovia said, still trying to justify her actions.

"Killing Asia is not your job, and you know it," Jiro said, his eyes narrowing again.

Xenovia clenched her jaw, her eyes hardening as his words pierced through her inner turmoil. A flicker of defiance flared up within her, fueled by righteousness and a desperate need to cling to her cause, her purpose.

"What do you mean it's not?! You don't understand. I... my job is to cleanse the world of evil. Devils, fallen angels, heretics, they're all a threat. And Asia Argento, she's part of that." Xenovia said in a harsh tone, although her words sounded almost like she was trying to convince herself more than him.

"Take a good look at that girl standing over there. Does she look like any kind of threat to you?" Jiro said, still holding Xenovia up by her neck and pointing at Asia, who looked terrified as Raynare held her close, protecting her.

Xenovia's gaze snaps to the direction he's pointing, her eyes locking onto Asia as she registers her terrified expression. The sight sends a pang through her heart, a pang of guilt and shame. She can see the fear in Asia's eyes, the helplessness in her stance, protected by Raynare.

Xenovia's grip on Jiro's wrist loosens slightly as she continues to stare at Asia, the conflict within her intensifying. His words and his pointed question hit her conscience like a dagger, further tearing at her resolve.

"And you said your duty was 'all you have'? Here's a suggestion: why not, instead of spilling more blood indiscriminately, you try to see all the other things you already have? Like your friendship with Irina, for instance. There's more to life than just fighting and killing others you see as enemies. Why don't you try to see them as people who just want to live peacefully?" Jiro said, making her look at him in surprise at the thought. But before she could speak, Jiro cut her off.

"Just look at these two, Irina, who I'm sure you know is a human/angel hybrid, lives with me, and she's a fallen angel that lives with Asia. And I'm sure you know devils live in this town as well, and they're fine with them here, so as you can see, we all live here peacefully." Jiro said, making Xenovia look at him even more shocked.

"An angel, a fallen angel, and devils living together?! In the same town?! How... how is that possible? It sounds... unbelievable." Xenovia said, taken aback, struggling to comprehend such a concept.

Xenovia's face betrayed a mixture of surprise and confusion at his admission. An angel, a fallen angel, and devils living among themselves? The very idea sounded ludicrous to her, a contradiction of everything she'd ever known. And yet, there was a grain of truth, a hint of progress, in his words.

"Nothing's unbelievable when you put in the effort and work towards it. As you can see, we're making an effort to keep the peace while living here. Maybe you should give it a try; you might be surprised." Jiro said, finally putting her down on her own feet, much to Irina's relief.

"Effort? Making an effort, you say... I've never... I've never considered such a possibility before." Xenovia said hesitantly, her voice soft, almost uncertain.

She goes to pick up her Holy Sword, pulling it out of the ground, her movements slow and careful, her face still reflecting a mix of confusion and contemplation. She slides the blade into the scabbard and lets out a soft sigh as she fixes her robe.

"Alright... I'll... think about what you said. I'll consider it, for a moment, at least." Xenovia said in a quiet voice, a hint of hesitation still lingering in her tone, but there was determination there too, a resolve to at least entertain the possibility. She finally met his gaze, a flicker of uncertainty still dancing in her eyes.

"Glad to hear it. Now then, do you have anything you want to say to Asia over there?" Jiro said, pointing to Asia behind him with his thumb. She still looked scared as she held onto Raynare.

Xenovia's expression softens as her eyes meet Asia's. A mixture of guilt and sympathy flashes across her face as she registers the former nun's fearful demeanor, taking a deep breath.

"Asia Argento... I... I can see now that what you've done... it wasn't an unforgivable sin. I've been too blinded by my own beliefs, my duties, my orders. I... I apologize for my attempt to take your life. It was... it was wrong." Xenovia said, her voice quieter and more subdued than before.

Asia shakily pulls herself out of Raynare's protective embrace. "I... I accept your apology. I know you were just doing what you thought was right, so I'm not mad. Can we... can we at least try to be friends?" Asia said timidly, her words laced with a hint of hope and relief.

Xenovia's eyes widened at Asia's request, her expression softened further, and she nodded slowly. "Friends? I'm sure we could do that," Xenovia said, the words coming out stiffly, as if she was still adjusting to the idea, but there was a hint of honesty in her voice, a genuine attempt at connection.

Asia's face lights up at Xenovia's agreement. She seems genuinely happy, even touched, by the prospect of forming a friendship with the angel exorcist.

"Really? Friends? I... I'd like that." Asia said, a soft, hopeful smile on her face as her words slipped out, an almost child-like glee evident in her voice. She glanced at Raynare and Irina, before looking back at Xenovia.

Jiro smiles at the scene and turns back to Xenovia. "Good, now that that's out of the way, your name is Xenovia, right? You already know Irina and Asia, so no need to introduce them. My name is Jiro Natsuo, and this is Raynare." Jiro said, gesturing to himself and the fallen angel in question while looking at Xenovia.

Xenovia's eyes dart to Raynare as he introduces her, Raynare's expression remaining guarded but not hostile. She gives her a quick, assessing glance, before returning her gaze to Jiro.

"I'm well aware of who you are, Jiro Natsuo, since Irina would talk about you nonstop and Lady Gabriel mentioned you when she met me on my way to this town. I must admit I'm surprised that Irina is childhood friends with the wielder of the Boosted Gear and the Red Dragon Emperor of all people." Xenovia said, as she looked at Jiro with an observing gaze.

Jiro gave an amused, prideful smile while Irina looked away with a sheepish look, and Xenovia turned to Raynare. "And you're Raynare, huh? Quite the diverse group we have here." She said with a hint of curiosity in her tone, mixed with a touch of wariness.

"Likewise, but just a fair warning: you may be old friends with Irina, and Asia may see you as a friend now, but if you ever try to hurt Asia again, I'll slaughter you." Raynare said with a threatening smile.

Xenovia looks at her with an eyebrow raised and almost challenging expression. Before they could challenge each other to a fight, Jiro speaks up.

"Don't worry about her; you'll get used to her. She's harmless if not provoked. Anyway, Xenovia will be helping us deal with Kokabiel, so I hope you'll all get along." Jiro said, looking between them.

"Harmless? That I doubt. But... I'll hold my judgment for now. If it's dealing with Kokabiel, then... very well, I'll help." Xenovia said, her eyebrow still raised at his words, a flicker of skepticism in her eyes.

Irina, who had been watching silently the whole time, sighed as the situation calmed down. She then ran up and enveloped Xenovia in a tight hug.

"Xenovia-chan, it's so good to finally see you again!" Irina said in a cheerful tone as she squeezed Xenovia tightly, who thought, "We were only apart for about two weeks," with a deadpan expression.

Irina pulls away slightly and looks at her with a determined smile. "Yes, we'll be fighting against Kokabiel. He's been a pain in the ass for all of us, so we'll take him down together." Irina said cheerfully, yet determined.

Before Xenovia could scold Irina for her crude language, Jiro spoke up again. "Alright, now that the introductions between us are out of the way, I'm sure you know that four devils live in this town, right? Since I mentioned them?" Jiro said, turning to Xenovia.

Xenovia nods in acknowledgment, having been told so by Gabriel the previous day. She had a hint of curiosity in her eyes. While her earlier hostility towards devils seems to have abated somewhat, she still regards them with a wary gaze.

"They already know you'll be here, so we'll wait for them. Then, we'll discuss the details of our alliance." Jiro said, to which Xenovia looked at him with wide eyes.

The very idea of having devils as allies goes against everything she's been taught, everything she's believed in. The conflicted expression on her face shows just how much the idea troubles her, yet she nods reluctantly.

To be continued

Hoh boy, just like with chapters 11 and 12, once again forget the last chapter; this one takes the top spot.

Anyway, like I said, happy New Year to all. Here we start the year off with the Kokabiel Arc. Hope you enjoy it.

Now then, I know what you all are wondering. "Why is Gabriel the leader of heaven and not Michael?" you might be asking.

Well, to be honest, I felt Gabriel fit in this story better as a mother figure for Irina, like she said, sort of filling the void left by her late mother, Felicity. I know she has Sister Griselda, but here, she's more so Irina's mentor and trainer, same goes for Xenovia.

Anyway, in the next chapter, we'll be getting the whole band together, so be prepared for that.

See you next time :)
