Hey guys I'm so sorry for the very late update I've been dealing with a lot of personal stuff but here you go
Candace took a deep breath as she got back in her car and began to think on how to solve this issue she knew she needed to talk to Jeremy but first needed to figure out how to bring it up.
...
As the day dragged on, Candace's anxiety only grew. She was desperate to speak with Jeremy but feared what the conversation would bring. She glanced at the clock repeatedly, counting down the hours until she would finally see him again. When 5 PM finally arrived, she practically bolted from her office.
She reached Jeremy's office and knocked lightly, her heart pounding.
"Come in!" he called out, and she opened the door.
"Hey, can we talk?" she asked, breathless. Jeremy looked up, his blue eyes meeting hers.
"Hey yeah of course come in" he said
She took a deep breath and walked up to him "look I cant keep it in any longer last week when I went out to lunch with Jenny and them they were talking about you and me sleeping together although they don't know it's me who your seeing but they're definitely suspicious that your sleeping with somebody in the firm" she said the anxiety in her voice clear
A heavy silence filled the room, each moment stretching painfully. After a long pause in silence he cleared his throat "hey don't worry about it this will all be old news by next week you know how offfice gossip is" he said waving his hand dismissively
"But Jeremy, it's more than just gossip. They believe it and... what if someone finds out the truth?" Her heart raced as she spoke, imagining the chaos that would ensue.
Jeremy's hands gripped the edge of his desk, his jaw tense. "Look, I won't let anyone hurt your reputation or make you out to be whatever they were saying you and me both know it's not true. We're careful, right? We'll just keep it under wraps for now," he insisted, but the uncertainty in his eyes mirrored her own.
Candace shook her head, the fear of losing everything weighing down her chest. "Okay yeah your right I'm sure it all brush over by next week and something new will catch their attention" she said
He nodded as he placed a light kiss on her cheek "don't worry about it look tomorrow will be a new day alright just get some rest and I'll see you tomorrow" he said reassuringly even though he wasn't so sure himself but he didn't want to worry her anymore then she already was.
She nodded "okay I'll see you tomorrow then" she said with a small smile before leaving his office for the night.
...
Candace spent the evening tossing and turning, reliving the scene from earlier and the way Jeremy's hopeful eyes tried to calm her. But the whispers at the office played on a loop in her mind, blending with her fears of professional ruin and embarrassment.
She could almost hear the laughter behind closed doors, the judgmental glances when they thought no one was looking.
The next morning, she arrived at the office early, intent on avoiding any further encounters with anyone. But as she entered the lobby, a wave of dread crashed over her when she saw her colleagues huddled together in the break room engaged in the gossip.
"Hey, Candace! Did you hear about the latest rumors?" Jenny called out, her voice dripping with faux sweetness as Ben chuckled beside her. Candace forced a smile, unwilling to show just how rattled she felt.
"Rumors?" she echoed, trying to keep her tone light. "I'm sure there are plenty!"
Ben shrugged and chimed in, "They're saying Mr. Johnson is practically sleeping with one of you girls! What a scandal! What do you think?"
Candace's heart raced; she could feel her heart beating out of her chest "wow! That is some crazy stuff...umm who is saying all of this stuff?" She asked trying to hide the anxiety in her voice
Kevin waved his hand dismissively "oh who knows really you know how gossip works" he said chuckling
Candace nodded as she chuckled lightly "right umm well I'm going to go get started with my work I'll uh catch up with you guys later" she said as she walked away to her office
...
As the day wore on, Candace's anxiety became unbearable, feeding off the laughter of her colleagues as they exchanged gossip. The rumors had turned from whispers to full-on conversations, slowly circling back to her like a predator. By lunchtime, the façade of normalcy crumbled. Sitting alone in her office, she dialed Jeremy's number, her fingers trembling. The line rang, and when he finally answered, she could hear the irritation in his voice.
"Candace? Is everything okay?" he asked, concern lacing his words.
"Umm not really they won't stop talking about it and-"
"Candace I have work to do alright I don't have time to engage in petty gossip so if you excuse me Im going to get back to work" he said as he hung up abruptly. He groaned "shit" he mumbled to himself the last thing he wanted was to take out his frustrations out on her he shook his head and decided to get back to work for now.
...
After work he made his way to her office as he walked in and closed the door behind him "hey I'm sorry about my earlier behavior I didn't mean to snap at you I was stressed out with work stuff and I let my emotions get the best of me" he said as he caressed her cheek
She smiled grateful for his apology "it's okay I understand I know this can't be easy on you either" she said
He nodded "yeah no it's not but hey don't worry about it they just love to gossip they're always coming up with some new ideas in their heads" he said
Candace looked away, shame creeping in. "I know. But I don't want to be just the girl they talk about in break rooms. I'm better than that. We're better than that."
Jeremy sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You're right. I thought we could handle it, but it's affecting you and that's not what I want."
"Maybe we need to set some boundaries?" she suggested, her voice trembling.
"Boundaries could help, but will the gossip stop or will it just continue to spiral out of control" he said
"I don't know I guess we'll just have to wait and see and hopefully it goes away on its own" she said as they walked out of the office and went their separate ways.
...
In the days that followed, Jeremy's demeanor changed. He was still attentive, yet the tension between them grew palpable, like a thin layer of ice that could crack at any moment. Candace noticed the way he avoided her gaze in the office, the playful banter replaced by a strained politeness.
The break room was filled with whispers, and Candace felt every gaze on her as she entered. The laughter of her coworkers, once a source of camaraderie, felt like daggers. Each time she caught a glimpse of Jeremy, he seemed lost in thought, the worry of the gossip. Later? Maybe after work? He called her into his office a flicker of weariness in his voice and eyes. Candace felt a pang of disappointment. Jeremy had become increasingly distant, and she feared their once fiery connection was dimming. When the workday finally ended, she found him already by his office door, waiting with a guarded expression.
Candace hesitated before stepping closer. "We need to discuss where we go from here. This isn't sustainable."
"I know, but what do you want from me? You saw how the gossip has spiraled out of control" he said frustrated
"Then we need to decide what this is between us," she said, her voice trembling. "Because right now, it feels like we're two ships passing in the night, afraid to collide."
Jeremy's expression flickered with frustration, and he took a step back, running a hand through his hair. "I don't think it's something we can solve right now, Candace. Maybe... maybe we just need some space?" His words felt like ice in her veins.
"Space?" she echoed, her heart plummeting. "Is that what you really want? To distance yourself from me?"
There you go I'm so sorry for taking so long to update I didn't want to give you guys something sloppy what do you guys think will happen with Candace and Jeremy next? Let me know in the comments and I'll update next week!!
