Chapter 441

Once Con had confirmed that he had gotten the antidote to Steve, Ro visibly relaxed. He also made sure to tell them that Steve had also almost drowned and would most likely be stuck in quarantine for at least a week.

That meant Rowan was going to be without him for at least a week and he was not comfortable with that at all.

He had called Jian to inform her of what the plan would be. She was pretty pissed, she didn't like his plan at all, but he was hoping to get some leeway to please her, but first, first he had to get the approval for what he wanted to do.

He waited for Con to be back from his helicopter trip before requesting that Rowan send him back to LA. He was sure to tell Con he was leaving briefly and to at the very least keep an eye on the house and her before he left, just in case.

Now would be the best time to try and go for her, her being unprotected the way she was.

He planned to make this quick.

He got to the main office and went straight to see the Director. The one who was technically in charge of keeping him in line.

Director Mills was no nonsense. He had told Wo Fat that he had no intention of letting him slide, he intended to keep an eye on him and keep him sternly in line. That had not really happened yet.

He had been lenient about all the time off he needed, and hadn't been as strict or stern when it came to all his violent transgressions either.

He liked to think it was because he was actually good at what he did, but it also probably had a lot to do with the fact that anyone could see how much of a disaster his sister was in the first place. As well as the fact that, despite being quite violent about it, he was getting results.

The second he walked into the office Director Mills had his eyes pointed at him. He had been working on paperwork, it now sat abandoned.

"How are you feeling?" he asked. Which meant he heard about him calling in sick.

"Yeah, I'd like to say I'm better, but my family is hell bent on keeping my blood pressure elevated," he said and then cleared his throat. "I've had another family emergency."

"Yes," he said closing the file he had been working on. "I heard about Hawaii, I had a feeling you'd ask for leave."

"And now I am."

He knew better than to think this would go well. Wo Fat spent a lot of time off, this couldn't be making them happy.

"I'm not going to approve that. I've given you quite a bit of leeway considering, but that stops now."

Wo Fat nodded. He could go at this two different ways. He could go the way he wanted to go, which was violently, but that would end this arrangement and he'd be a fugitive again. Or he could go with diplomacy.

"Sir. 90 percent of Five-0 has been taken out for at least a week," he said. "You should send me down to bridge the gap."

Now that seemed to surprise the man in front of him. He was no doubt expecting threats. Wo liked to surprise people.

"And why should I do that?"

"For starters, it shows that you're a team player. It will help foster a relationship at the very least between you and the Governor and, best case scenario, with law enforcement if you ever have to encroach again. And quite frankly they will owe you, so even if they don't like that you encroached on their territory, you will hold the upper hand."

"All good reasons."

"That and my sister is beside herself, so I'm going regardless of what you say. We both know that if we go that route, it will be long, tedious and rather bloody."

"Ah, and there's the threats you're famous for."

Wo Fat merely shrugged. "It's not a threat, it's a fact," he said. "And I'd rather not take that route, if it matters. So having me loaned out to Five-0 is the better option for all."

"And how long do you plan to stay?"

"Until my brother-in-law is out of quarantine. But uh… I did buy a house on the island and promised my fiancée that I'd help her move into it. It should be coming ready in that time."

That earned him a bit of a sigh but the director nodded.

"Fine, I will call the Governor, see if I can make her think it was her idea," he said. "You'll have to have a handler but if you stay longer, you'll be handed over to Steven McGarrett. Think you can handle that?"

"I'd rather be micromanaged by Satan himself, but I'll deal with it," he grumbled.

Director Mills was smiling now. Wo Fat purposely hammed that last sentence up to make it seem more aggregable. He'd definitely like that Wo Fat would be annoyed having to stay there with Steve in charge of him.

And he would be.

Just not that much because it was for Jian and she deserved to me happy too.

"When do you plan to leave?"

"I've already bought my ticket, I plan to be on Oahu by dawn," he said. Director Mills wasn't the least bit surprised by that revelation.

"I'll call her up as soon as you leave."

Wo Fat nodded and took his leave. He went back to the motel that he and Kono were staying at, told her what was happening and where he was going, before heading for the airport.

This was going to be a long week… he just knew it.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Rowan was too riled up to actually go to sleep after she got back. She tried to send Nahele to bed but he was too excited as well.

She had figured, since she couldn't sleep she'd get ready for the weekend. She was going to have to get two extra kids into this space. She figured Charlie could have the guest room and maybe Grace could sleep on the couch.

She thought Nahele would want to lie down, watch TV or play his videogames, but he didn't.

He took the bedding she had gotten out for the couch from her instead. "I'll sleep on the couch," he said, and Grace can have my room, or Charlie. It doesn't matter."

"Awww baby," she had said. "I don't want to put you out…"

"Naw, I don't mind, it makes sense anyway, I can sleep anywhere."

He didn't want to do up the couch until after they picked up Grace and Charlie so he put them down on the coffee table.

He helped her whip up pancake batter for tomorrow, and plan out dinner. She made them hot chocolates and then sent him up to his room to get any last minute laundry he needed done so there wasn't piles of it all of his room.

It was while he was upstairs, while Rowan was clearing up the dishes that the door to her house opened.

She might have been concerned, but she knew who it was.

"Hey," Con said, letting himself in like they hadn't been fighting for the last two weeks. "You end up seeing Steve?"

Rowan didn't even bother turning to him. "I know Wo has you following me, so I know you know I saw him."

Con nodded mostly to himself. "Fair. I heard the Williams' kids are coming for the weekend."

"Yeah, I pick them up tomorrow after school."

"Oh… what about your kid, that's pretty cramped quarters," Con said. "And I don't think he and Grace are good again."

"Well, he hasn't said anything to me, so I'm guessing it's fine."

"Did you even give him an opportunity to complain?"

Rowan shot him a glare at that. She wanted to argue that her son could tell her anything, and he knew that, but he also hadn't told her he had a girlfriend.

Nahele chose that moment to come down the stairs with all the laundry.

He completely ignored Con to come to her. "Here mom," he said as he dumped it all in her arms. And then he stopped, frowned and went to take it back. "No, that's a bad idea, dad said you shouldn't lift things."

"Nonsense, I can do laundry."

"Nope, no," he said pulling the laundry out of her arms. "I'll do it… just uh… tell me what to do…"

"Great, you've made him neurotic," Con said and Nahele turned to him almost surprised while Rowan glared at him.

"Hey Uncle Con," he said as he turned to move towards the laundry room.

"Hey kid!" he said. "You wanna come stay at my place this weekend? It's gonna be a totally guy fest when your Uncle Wo comes in."

Nahele didn't answer right away until he was done putting the laundry in the washer, at least she hoped that was what he did.

When he came back he was sure to give Con a hug before saying: "Thanks but naw. I'm man of the house until Steve gets back. Gotta stay and make sure that everything's all good."

"Steve tell you that?"

Nahele nodded proudly. "But maybe we can have a gaming night?"

"Wo doesn't game, but maybe we can try to teach him."

Nahele smiled again, promised to text him before heading back up to the second floor to get another load of laundry.

They were quiet a moment, Rowan standing there with her arms folded over her chest watching as he avoided her eyes.

He cleared his throat. "Wo's gonna be landing in the early morning, I'll go to pick him up."

"I know, he texted me his ETA too," Ro said and Con nodded.

Then the two of them were stuck standing there again, staring at one another. They had never been this awkward before, not even when they were fucking. Not even after she ended their friends-with-benefits thing. She hated that this was what they had become.

"Right, honestly, I'm sick of this," Con snapped. "I've been worried sick for two weeks, Wo has been of no help cause he never knows what you're doing and Steve never answers his goddamn phone. And I was adamant that I wasn't going to care, but I know you, I know the shit you get into."

"You've been texting Steve?"

"Calling, actually, but I'm pretty sure he's screening my calls," he said softly and then he pinned that glare onto her again. "I'm sick of us fighting, especially cause you're being stupidly stubborn. So you give me one good reason why you have to be mean to Tani or… I guess this is what we're going to be."

Rowan stared at him and he stared back and he sighed.

"Fine I guess this is going to be us, then," he said. "We're not going to talk, we're not going to be siblings anymore…"

"Oh for fuck sake," Rowan snarled. "She's going to hurt you, alright? I can see it in the strings. This relationship is literally going to implode."

At that Con blinked his eyes. "What?"

"She's going to hurt you, you idiot. And I couldn't tell you cause you wouldn't have believed me, so I just… I wanted to keep you two apart but that didn't work, so I thought if I was super mean she'd go away… and a little bit cause I'm holding what she's definitely going to do to you against her already…"

"Rowan that's ridiculous," he snapped and she fell quiet. "You're being a bitch because of a single outcome in an infinite universe of strings."

"It's not a single outcome anymore. Now it's your path."

"Fuck is it really?" he asked and then shook his head. "Ro, so what if it is? I'm sure I can change it!"

"Con…"

"No. No, Ro, this what you sign up for when you get into a relationship," he said. "No one else has a sister that can literally see the future. Everyone else walks into a relationship knowing that they can get hurt down the line. I'd like to be one of those people."

"Fine. But I get to tell you I told you so."

"I'd just rather you be nice. Can you please, please, just be nice?"

"I'm not good at nice but I'll try."

"Bullshit, you're Canadian, you're whole people are nice, you're just not trying."

Rowan paired a huff and an eye roll directed right at him. "I said I'd try, god!"

Con smiled at her before carefully reaching out and ruffling her hair. "Any chance you can make me something yummy before I have to pick up Wo? He's landing in a few hours…"

"Yeah, I'll make you a couple of pancakes," she said and his smile widened. "I'll even make a few for him so he has something when he lands."

It felt nice to have her brother back and she had a feeling she was really going to like have Wo and Con back together. It might even feel a little bit like the Year of Deceit all over again, except this time she wouldn't be heartbroken.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

The following morning Steve was feeling much better, and so was the rest of his team. They were in their quarantine section that had three rooms in it. The shower/bathroom area, the bed area and the common area.

They had been given their cellphones back which meant Steve could talk to Rowan. So he knew she hadn't slept the night before and that she and Nahele were probably going to sleep most of the day and then come to visit him after they picked up Grace and Charlie from school.

At that particular moment, the remnants of their breakfast trays had been cleared, and they had all separated to do different tasks. Junior was working out, to keep himself in shape. Danny was reading a book and Tani and Steve were playing chess.

Steve was not doing very well, either, and the competitive jerk in him was coming out.

He had been staring at this chessboard for a while trying to decide what move he was going to make but none of them were good ones.

"You know it's your move, right?" Tani asked.

Steve shot her a glare. "Yes, thank you."

"Okay. I was just saying, in case you forgot. It's been like ten minutes."

"I didn't forget, thank you. I'm thinking, is that okay?"

"Yeah, totally, take your time," she said, though at this point she was just being condescending.

"Hey, uhm, I was thinking, I could, uh, maybe call some furniture shops, see if I find some chairs we like," Danny said, interrupting Steve while he was trying to concentrate.

He didn't take his eyes off the chess board. "What for? Why do you want chairs?"

"Chairs, for the, uh, waiting room in the restaurant."

Steve put his hand to his last remaining rook and then quickly took it off. "Oh, no, I don't wanna... I don't wanna do that."

"You don't wanna put chairs in the waiting room? I'm sorry, I don't…"

"I don't wanna do the waiting room at all, Danny," Steve said.

He probably should have told him this on the boat, he was definitely regretting not going for arguing when this first came up.

"What are you talking about? You liked the idea just fine this morning?"

"No, I didn't. I hated it the minute it came out of your mouth, but I figured since we were all probably about to die, I didn't want to upset you, so…"

"Oh, but now it's okay to upset me?"

"I have a question," Tani asked coming in between the argument, just as Junior decided to join them sitting on the couch adjacent to Danny. "You said that Ro was always right."

Steve's eyebrows furrowed. "Okay? Yeah, and why…"

"Well, you just said that you thought we were going to die, but you said that Ro would have told you and she's always right, so if she hadn't told you, you weren't going to die."

Steve rolled his eyes. "Yeah well, Ro and I also argue a lot because I don't listen to her. So yeah, she's always right, but I also always doubt her, which is always stupid in hindsight."

"Yeah very stupid, because Ro got that cure two hours into looking for it. Should have just called her right away."

"Okay, Danny…"

"Can you please just make your move!" Tani cried, before they could start arguing again.

"Do you see the kind of person he is?" Danny asked her instead. "I just want you to be clear that this is a selfish man, okay, that care about nothing but what he wants and always has to be right, despite having a very lovely wife who literally gets psychic visions meant to keep him from dying."

"Okay!" Steve snapped getting him to shut up. He moved his knight, knocked her pawn over. There everyone would be happy now.

"Checkmate."

Okay everyone but him.

Steve looked at the board and groaned. Yeah that's why he wasn't supposed to move his knight.

Great.

"You see what you just made me do?" Steve snapped, turning to Danny.

Danny, however, was loving this cause he was all smiles. "I made you bad at chess?" he asked.

"No, you rushed me."

"He didn't rush you," Tani said. "He just put you out of your misery. I've had you dead to rights like, six moves ago."

"Six moves ago," Steve echoed and she just nodded.

"I knew you were a bad chess player," Danny cried but Steve shook his head.

"Shut. Up!" he snapped but Danny's smile widened.

"Damn, McGarrett it's just a game," Tani said. "There's no need to get so bent out of shape about it."

"Oh, no. This, this is a thing," Danny said. "It's a thing he does, it's starting."

"What are you even talking about?" Steve snapped.

"Yeah, yeah, it's cause… uh Steve can't handle being away from Rowan. He's like an addict. He'll get squirrelly, twitchy, and so fucking grumpy."

Junior shot him a bit of a wince: "I can attest to that."

"I am not that bad! I miss my wife a normal amount, thank you."

"Nope, this is what he's like. He's competitive and a sore loser. And his grumpiness is going to be worse because he doesn't have Rowan."

"Okay, you know what, fuck this, fuck all of you," Steve said and then picked up his phone and called his wife. "Ro, crush her at chess please."

He then turned the camera towards the table where they could all see Rowan's very confused face. She was clearly in bed, too, and they'd all guess that he had just woken her up.

"Crush her at chess? Steven I don't even play chess," she cried and then her eyes narrowed. "Are you already having trouble playing with others? It's only been like six hours."

"Danny threw me off my game!" Steve howled pointing the camera back at his face.

"You can't blame Danny if you're bad at chess, Steve," Rowan chided. "Why don't you play a nice game? One where you don't have to be competitive." Steve frowned at her and she sighed. "Yeah, don't know why I offered, you can turn anything into a competition."

She must have winced or something because suddenly Steve was erect. "Oh! Babe, are you okay? What is it? What happened?"

"Nothing, just a twitchy baby," she said. "He, all of a sudden, really likes to kick. Guess he's not comfortable right now."

"Awwww, let me see!" he cried, this big goofy grin on his face. He stared at the screen a little bit before the frown started. "Babe are you going to be okay? I know Wo's not coming until later…"

"Oh, yeah, no, he touched down three hours ago. He's over at Con's sleeping."

"Oh… so… so it'll be him…"

"He has orientation as soon as he's up. Lou's going to get him up to speed on working with Five-0. He's in charge of Wo until you're out."

Steve nodded and then thought that over. "Then… who's going to be sitting on you?"

Normally that would upset Rowan, thinking that someone had to be with her, to watch her and take care of her but she simply said: "Con."

"And he's okay with that? I thought he was pretending not to care?"

"Oh, yeah, we talked everything out, we're good now. He was here before he had to go pick up Wo," she said. "We had midnight pancakes."

Steve's eyebrows furrowed in concern, probably because midnight breakfast was their thing.

"He didn't stay the night though, right?"

"No, but he did say if I get too nervous sleeping on my own today, or any time while Wo's busy, he'll come over…"

"Isn't Nahele on the couch?"

"That's not until tonight. I'm picking up Charlie and Grace after school," she said and Steve nodded.

That should have calmed him, but it didn't.

"So Con would stay on the couch today… right?" When Rowan didn't answer him right away he threw his head back with a groan. "Okay, Rowan, I shouldn't have to say this, but I don't want him in our bed!"

"Well it's not like I'm picking him over you, Steven. You're the one that got yourself infected and now have to be quarantined."

"Rowan. I don't know how many times I have to tell you but I do not want your brother sleeping in my bed."

"Our bed, and you're fine with Wo doing it."

"Yes, because I know for a fact that Wo Fat is not romantically interested in you!"

The implication there that Con was. He didn't notice but across from him Tani made a bit of a face at that comment.

"Okay, I'm not arguing with you about this," Rowan growled. "He has a girlfriend, I married you, I would obviously rather have you but someone is in quarantine!"

"I'll have you know that when you were in quarantine that one time I didn't invite anyone else into our bed."

"You also weren't giving me a label," Rowan remind him and Steve bit back the groan that rose up in his throat.

"I fixed that. Obviously. Because you got the label… and the ring…"

"Baby," Rowan said softly and Steve went quiet. "I know you're worried about me being by myself. I thought having Con around again would make you feel better. If it's really going to bother you I can call it off."

"Can't you just get Wo?"

"I told you, he's going to be busy," she snapped. "By the way, since we don't have room he'll be staying with Con while he's here working for Five-0. I know we'd all prefer Wo to do the actual checking in, but he's actually expected to work, so he'll mostly be busy. So, all I've got is Con, and we both know I only like to cuddle with him cause…"

"He cuddles the most like me, yes, I know," he said with a sigh.

They were quiet a moment before Rowan said: "Are you okay? Are you feeling better? Did you get a good sleep?"

"You know I don't sleep when I'm not with you," he said. They all knew he hadn't slept well because they were all in the room trying to sleep as that man tossed and turned and sighed when he couldn't get comfortable. "So… I guess I'm a little tired."

"Mmmm," she said, sounding sleepy herself. "Are you cranky cause you need a nap?"

"Fuck off Ro, you know I'm can't get to sleep without you. This is going to be me all week, it's not going to be a good week."

"Do you want me to bring over the lullaby I put down for Nahele?"

"No. I want you here."

"It's not like I can be there, baby, no matter how much you want me to be."

"I know," he said with a sigh.

"I miss you though," she said her voice sounding a little strained like she was about to cry, "I wish you were home. I wish you were here with me."

"I know, me too."

They were quiet a moment before they heard Rowan say: "Do you wanna see what I wore to bed last night?"

She must have given him a preview because his eyes widened and a wolfish grin hit his face. Then he seemingly remembered he was no by himself. His eyes darted up to Tani and then to Danny and then he was getting up, heading for the washroom, probably because he knew that this was going to lead to them trying to have phone sex.

Tani and Junior watched him go, their eyes drifting over to Danny who was still on the couch with his book, not looking surprised at all.

"And so it begins," he sighed and the two younger team members groaned.

This quarantine was going to be hell.
