Chapter 443
The light exploding had been terrifying. The fact that it came literally right after her fearless leader screamed for his wife, made the whole situation so much more strange. It was so jarring to hear him do it.
This man who stared down criminals and gun fights like they were every day normally situations—though to be fair, for him it was—literally screamed for his wife. His wife who was no where near here.
Screamed for her like a kid screamed for their mom.
Tani had no idea what to say, no idea what to do. She just stared at him, watched as he and Junior swept the glass from the light above them off of Steve, off of himself, and off of Danny.
She wanted to ask what was happening because this wasn't the first time something like this had happened. Weird things happened around Steve's wife all the time, but she wasn't sure how to bring that up after when there were bigger issues.
"Go get help!" Steve said to her once the glass had been dealt with and he was focusing on Danny.
Oh how Tani wanted to ask him: "What do you need help for? You just called your wife. What do you want me to do?"
But she didn't. She turned back to the door figuring, fucking quarantine, she'd put on a mask outside, flag someone down and make sure she stayed super far away from them or something.
The guy had to have forgotten to lock the door… right?
Well she didn't even get to check. She got to the door and found that there was a strange looking yellow oblong device stuck to the door.
Yeah that… that couldn't be good right?
"Guys!" she called but was mostly ignored. "We've got a problem."
Steve looked up and then sighed. "Junior come here," he ordered and the younger man hopped over to him immediately. "Keep pressure right there."
It was all he had to say. Immediately Junior's hands were covering his, ready to put pressure on it the second Steve slipped his hands free. But he didn't move until Junior said: "Okay, got you."
As soon as he let go, Steve was up on his feet. "What's going on?"
"He rigged the door with some kind of explosive," Tani said to him.
Steve was beside her at this point, he too was staring at the device on the door, not happy in the least.
He looked over for a good couple of seconds, he listened to it beeping before saying: "We open this door and this is gonna blow. That son of a bitch locks us in."
Yes, yes Tani had figured that.
Steve turned to her. "We're going to shoot our way out."
Oh, wow, that… how was that going to work?
But before she could ask him he was turning around and heading back to the body of their shooter. He got to him, picked up the gun and pulled open the revolver.
"Two bullets, both used."
Steve tossed it aside without a second thought. He went to the bag the man had brought in with him. He glanced into it, felt at all the pockets and then, in his frustration, swiped it off the table and to the floor.
"Plan B?" Tani asked him once it was clear that they didn't have any bullets to do the aforementioned shooting.
"Find a way to get somebody up here," Steve ordered.
Tani balked at that order. "How am I supposed to do that? This is an isolate wing, that glass is…"
Steve practically erupted. He had been kneeling next to Danny but he whirled up onto her a dinger pointed in her direction, as were his wide, wild, panicked eyes. "Figure it out!" he roared at her and she scowled.
She couldn't help but be annoyed. Yes she got that he was upset, this was his best friend who had been shot, but that wasn't her fault. Nor should he be taking his anger and fear out on her.
"Okay, again, how do you want me to do that? You just called your wife," she said, putting the called in air quotes, cause all he had really done was scream her name. Rowan had left the building there was no way she had heard him. "Should we just wait for that to float through the universe to her? Maybe you can try screaming for her again, seeing as she didn't hear this… call."
She put the call in quotes again and she swore she saw Steve's eye twitch. His jaw was pulsing as he ground his teeth. He was biting back the desire to snap at her.
"Just go figure it out!" he ordered again and while that didn't help, Tani did turn back around to try and think of something she could do to get someone up there.
As she wandered around opening doors and looking at their supplies, Steve was with Danny.
"We're gonna roll you over, Danny," he said to his friend. He watched him grimace, hating that Danny didn't even have it in him to argue or bitch. He should have been sassing him up a storm but nothing came. "I got to see behind you, alright? See if it's a through and through."
Danny was mumbling, trying to form words of protest but Steve ignored him.
He glanced up to Junior who was going to help him, he didn't have to give any direction. "Alright, one, two, three."
The countdown was mostly for Danny, but Junior helped him roll him over anyway. Danny groaned at the movement but said nothing.
"What do we got?" Steve asked as Junior took a look at the wound.
"We got a right side exit wound," he said right away. "It's too far right for the heart, too high for the liver."
"Look at that," Steve said forcing a grin onto his face. "Okay, that's good but here's the bad news. I think you punctured a lung."
There came a sudden bang followed by a grunt and when they looked up Tani was bashing the door with one of the chairs. Predictably it didn't break the glass.
Still she bashed the chair against the glass 3 times before throwing the chair back to the ground with a cry of frustration.
She stood there heaving for a moment before her eyes found Steve and Junior. "I had to try!" she cried at them, clearly taking her stares as questioning why she had even bothered with the chair.
Steve watched her kick the chair away from her and storm off with a shake of his head. He turned back to Danny. "We got to get you up on this table, Danny, okay?"
Danny was not okay with this though, Steve could tell by the way he shook his head.
"I'm going to put you on the monitor. It'll keep you stable, alright?" he asked but Danny just kept mumbling and shaking his head. Steve ignored him and looked to Junior. "We do it on three. Ready?"
Junior grabbed a hold of Danny's hand and pressed it to the sheet they were using as gauze then moved towards his head as Steve went for Danny's feet.
They got their grips, counted down to three and then lifted him up and over to the table. Danny grunted the whole way, clearly not happy with the situation.
The second he was down at the table, Steve put pressure on the gunshot again. "Alright, I got you buddy."
"Get… get your goddamn wife," Danny managed to rasp out and Steve faltered.
"I called, I did, I called, and I'm panicking… she has to… I mean… she has to know, just hold on, okay? Give her some time to get back here, if she's not here soon I'll call again, okay?"
Junior turned a look up to him. "Does he really mean for you to scream for Ro?" he asked. When Steve just stared at him Junior's eyebrows furrowed. "Why?"
Steve didn't have an answer for that though. So, instead, he walked away, throwing a "Junior open his shirt" over his shoulder as he went for the medical equipment they kept in their area in case one of them went down.
He grabbed the monitor and wheeled it over to Danny. He plugged it in and then hooked it up onto Danny. Blood pressure cuff around his arm, while Junior clipped the node to his finger.
"Alright, it's alright, it's alright buddy," Steve kept saying, at this point it was a mantra and it was the only thing keeping him calm.
The taped the small pads to his chest and the monitor beeped to life.
"Right, so along as his O2 stays above 80 we'll be okay," Junior said and then immediately frowned. "His uh… his numbers are going down."
Of course they were. Of fucking course.
"I take it back," Danny said to him. "I just want to be bored."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, don't you worry. We're getting you out of here soon."
"If she doesn't show up, I'm going to haunt her. Tell her I'm going to haunt her."
"She'll show, Danny," Steve said. "She has yet to let us down."
"What are you two talking about?" Junior cried. "I know you seem to think highly of her, but your wife is just that. Your wife. With a pair of criminal brothers, that doesn't make her a super hero who can fix this the second she shows up."
Steve might have hit him if the monitor didn't start beeping wildly.
"What's happening?" Tani called from across the room.
"His heart rate was spiking and his O2 is spiking," he said. He thought for two seconds. "His wound's sucking in area. That's what's happening. It's putting pressure on his working lung, that's why he can't breathe. We gotta make a seal."
"Trauma dressing," Junior said getting it right away.
"And tape."
Tani came over to them, clearly too worried to keep trying to find a way to get help. "What's that going to do?"
"Theoretically, it's gonna push the air out and stop it sucking air in."
"Listen call Charlie and Grace…" Danny started and Steve cut him right off.
"Listen, you're gonna see Grace and Charlie really soon, you understand me?"
Danny shook his head. "She'd've been here by now if it was you. Would have walked through the wall by now…"
Tani blinked her eyes. "Is he talking about Ro? He thinks she can walk through walls?"
Steve shook his head. "Can you go try and find help, please?"
She sighed at him but did as she was told. She moved off as Steve and Junior went about getting that trauma dressing.
She went to the door again, tried to see if someone was there and almost turned away. She had a plan, use the fire extinguisher to break open the wall in their only washroom, find the pipe, break the pipe, flood the place so that it dripped on the floor below and got someone up there.
However, when she turned away she swore she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. She went back to that door to look. She just had to squint and she realized exactly who it was that was coming down towards them.
It was Rowan.
Rowan had come back.
Why had she come back? She hadn't… she hadn't actually heard Steve call, had she? No, there was no way that was true, and really all that mattered was that she was, in fact there.
"Oh my god! I think we're saved," she said.
Steve looked up from whatever he was doing and asked: "What?"
"It's your wife, she's here," Tani said. She may not have liked Rowan, seeing as the woman didn't like her either but she was definitely happy to see her. She grinned with relief at Rowan not only, opened the first door but stopped at the second, which was what she had been trained to do.
Tani went to the intercom button just as Rowan did the same.
"What happened, did you call me? What is that?" Rowan asked breathlessly her darting around, craning to try and get view of Steven who was just in the other room.
"How did she know you called for her?" Junior asked but Steve ignored him.
"Ro, get help. We need bomb squad and we need a doctor," Steve called.
Rowan peered past the door and then turned to Tani. "There's a bomb on the door?" she cried. "Has Danny been shot?" Tani nodded and Rowan balked. "That was today?!"
"RO JUST GO!" Steve screamed and Rowan fished out her phone and then left the little alcove area and heading back down the hallway calling for help until she connected with 911
Tani almost sighed. They were saved.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
When Grover got the call from Duke that Rowan had called the cops about Danny, gunshot wounds and a bomb, he had not been happy.
He had sent her a text asking why didn't you call me and her response?
"I am clearly panicked!"
Yeah.
That was great.
Still Grover got himself ready, in record time, his wife would later tell him, and sped towards Kings Hospital.
There he found that Bomb Squad and Swat had just got there and Duke was coming towards him as a steady stream of people were rushing out of the front doors.
"How's Danny?" he asked Duke as soon as he was close enough.
"He's critical but stable," Duke said. "We got doctors on site talking McGarrett through on how to treat him. We're lucky Rowan came to visit Steve this morning, they might not have been found."
Grover didn't believe that though. For several reasons, actually.
1. Rowan had void powers, she was constantly talking to Steve through them. There was no way she wouldn't have ignored the panic he was no doubt sending out on the strings.
2. Again, Rowan had void powers. Even if Steve was masking it like he did on the boat, she'd've found out eventually.
3. Rowan had already visited Steve today, she did so after dropping Nahele off at school. So the only reason she had come back was for one of the two above reasons.
4. Void powers or not, everyone in that room with Danny was exceedingly resourceful, they'd found a way to get help up to them either way.
Instead of saying that though he asked: "How soon can we get in there?"
"Bomb squad just got here. They're examining the bomb now."
"Any of you manage to get Ro away from that door."
"No. And as you can imagine Rowan has been more of a distraction then a help at this point."
Yeah Grover figured that.
He gave the order to get all non-personnel out of the hospital and then he headed up to that secure wing. He got past the bomb squad who was setting up tables and headed towards the double doors that were between the rest of the world and the team.
Standing there beside the lead of the Bomb squad, who was no doubt trying to talk to Tani, was Rowan.
Tani was standing there, mirror in hand pointed at the bomb, and it was clear that he was trying to look at it, and Rowan, well. He guessed that Rowan was refusing to move.
Grover reached into that alcove and pulled Rowan out and towards him.
"Little mama, it might be a good idea to sit down," he said.
Rowan shook her head. "No, no, I need to be there."
"Steve knows you're here now, I think he'd feel better if you were a safe distance away from the bomb."
Rowan stared at him blankly and he sighed. Yeah she wasn't going to listen.
"Alright, but I'm going to get you a chair, you shouldn't be on your feet for too long."
She just waved that away and then carefully looked around before turning back to him. "Did you call Wo?"
Grover was momentarily confused. For starters, it was Wo Fat's day off. Specifically requested because Jian was flying into Hawaii today. She'd be taking the extra room in the McGarrett house while Wo continued to stay with Con.
Why? Because Wo was coming and going at all hours and wanted his fiancée to rest. And he figured she'd feel better being with Rowan, who was a girl.
Secondly, Wo Fat had been with Rowan last night. Grover knew this because she had called Wo before he got off the case last night asking him to pick up pretzels, malasadas and a shaved ice for her. When she made requests like that he almost always ended up staying over.
Thirdly, she was his sister, wouldn't have made sense if she reached out? It was what Grover was assuming would happen.
"You didn't call him?"
"Well… he's not aware I left the house yet… so… no," she said and Grover nodded knowing right away what had happened.
Neither of her brothers knew where she was right now and he was going to guess that she had done that on purpose cause they were smothering her lately with the security detail. Being, one of her brothers surveiling her at all times.
"Well I thought you were going to call him so I didn't," Grover said. "And it's his day off anyway, do we want to stress him off on his day off?"
"Not really."
"You should at least send him a text, cause when he realizes you're not with him he's going to panic anyway."
Rowan made a face, and while she looked at her phone, she wasn't using it to text him.
The man from the bomb squad who had been with Tani chose that moment to come up to them.
"Captain," he said with a nod purposely ignoring Rowan.
"Alright, what do we know?"
"Commander McGarrett is right, the bomb appears to be motion sensitive. The smallest vibration could set it off."
"Not good," Rowan said for him. "Seeing as Tani bashed a chair into the door three times."
"Hey!" Tani called from behind them. "It's my first bomb!"
"For a homemade bomb it's pretty sophisticated. We got to get an x-ray, see what's going on inside and take it from there."
"Wait… is that it?" Rowan asked. "That's all… that's all you got?"
"Rowan…"
"He's a bomb expert and the best you got is do an x-ray?"
"We need to learn more about the bomb before we try to get Miss Rey to diffuse it. And, if I'm being honest it might be better for all involved if you stay away from the door."
Rowan just stared at him, that ice queen look of hers making the bomb squad leader actually squirm.
"Ma'am, you can stare at me like that all you want but that won't change…"
Rowan turned away from him with a: "We don't have time for this," as she pulled out her phone.
The second she turned her back on him the man let out his breath. "I don't know what it is about that look but it gives me the heebie-jeebies."
"Yeah, that's how we all feel about it," Grover said.
Rowan moved far enough away from the rest of the cops and then quickly dialed Wo's number and waited for him to pick up. When he did, she didn't even say hello, she just got right to it. She was on a timer after all.
"If I wanted to break into a quarantined ward of a hospital without going through the front door, how would I do it?" she asked.
"Good morning to you too," he answered. He sounded sleepy, she must have woken him up. Her poor brother, he was so tired these days. Five-0 was working him way too hard. She gave him a moment to stretch, though not too long.
"Yeah, yeah, answer the question," she snapped, she looked down to the table in front of her and saw a box of tools.
That would probably be useful, as would one of the banana suits the doctors and nurses were always wearing when they went in to check on Steve and the others.
Wo Fat was quiet a moment. "Did you leave the house?"
"Obviously, Wo," she snapped.
"Why?"
"Why? Wo, I drove my son to school and then went to visit Steve, I do this every morning, it should not be a surprise. Can you please answer my question?"
"Do you have Con with you?" he asked. He then decided he knew the answer to that question and went straight to lecturing her. "We discussed this, you're supposed to take Con with you in case…"
"Wo. Question. How would you break into a quarantined hospital room?"
"Well it depends Rowan, why does it matter?" he asked after a heavy sigh.
"Cause I have a bet with Steve and I wanna win," she snapped. "Now how would you do it?"
"Okay, I'll answer your question on two conditions."
"Wo, I don't have time for this…"
But he ignored her. "One, you call Con and let him know where you are. Two, I get half the reward since I'm doing all the heavy work."
"I'm asking your opintion, I'm not asking you to do it."
"You don't get an answer if I hang up the phone," he reminded her and she sighed.
"Fine. Fine. Yes, I agree. But the winner gets to pick the first position we're in when he… you know…"
"God, you two have sex way too much."
"And you're sleeping in the bed we do it in," she reminded him.
Wo was quiet for a moment before he said: "I'd be disgusted if it weren't for the fact that no where in the house is safe from you too. There probably isn't a sex free surface in this house."
"Wo!" she groaned and he sighed again.
"Uh… not through the front door, right?" he asked. When she confirmed she heard him hmmm over it before saying: "Well… I'd probably get myself one of those fancy suits and go in through the ventilation if it were big enough. They'd have a special chute just for them, to purify the germs. I'd have to go through there."
"Okay great. Thanks. Call you back if Steve doesn't believe me."
She grabbed the tool box first, figuring she'd take whatever seemed super important at the time, then she slipped away to grab the suit. Once she had everything, she snuck away to the staircase that would take her to the roof. She had to find the right ventilation shaft to go through.
