JJ sat on the couch and stared at Kimberly as she looked around the guest suite. She looked older than the pictures his father had, but she looked so similar to his mom at the same time. When she caught him staring, she gave him a small smile and then sank into the other end of the couch, absentmindedly rubbing her pregnant belly.
"Can I get you anything?" JJ blurted out and Kim just shook her head. Everything that she could possibly need could wait, she could tell that JJ desperately needed some time with her alone. She wondered how much time he had gotten with her in this world. Thomas had said that Kimberly died when she was young, but she hoped he had some memories of her. "How…why…what is different in your world?"
"I don't even know where to start," Kim muttered as she kicked off her shoes and she let out a long sigh. She finally felt her body relax now that she felt safe again. She certainly didn't want to tell Tommy the number of contractions she had had while she was a ghost- it would be enough to send them straight to the hospital. "I think the biggest thing is that my prophet powers were taken away for…17, 18 years. I also was one of the first rangers in my world in over 2000 years. I just didn't have the target on my back that your mom did until recently and even now, I have more experience than she did when it came to fighting. Tommy definitely protects me, but I am more able to protect myself."
"But you're…" JJ motioned to her belly and she just shook her head. Her powers acted differently when she was pregnant, they had found that out by accident when she was pregnant with the twins. "You aren't that much younger than Dad."
"Hey…I know I'm an old man, but don't make me feel really old," Thomas said as he, Tommy, and Katy walked into the guest suite. Thomas quickly disguised the pain that shot through him as he saw his son talking with a version of his mother that he had never been able to know. Sure, there were pictures that JJ had now, but it wasn't the same. This was a glimpse of what might have been and it was so much more painful than he'd ever imagined it would be. "It's still really early here, but I think all of us are up. What do you need from us?"
"Umm…well…I can't borrow either of your clothing so…I'll need to go get some things," Kim said as Tommy watched her, carefully, and she gulped. She was far enough along in this pregnancy that there was a real chance this baby would be born here and he knew that terrified her. She might be able to hide it from Thomas and Katy, but she couldn't hit it from him. "Also…if this takes awhile…"
"I can get you in with my doctor," Katy said as Kim gave her a grateful smile and she just nodded. She had no idea how they would explain who she was, but she would let them worry about that. The least of her worries was how they were going to explain them being here. "We can also go shopping this afternoon or I can take you while they go to the academy."
"I really want a current ranger to stay with them any time they are away from the Academy or our house," Thomas said as Tommy gave him a confused look. Was there really a risk to her other than Kiros? "We look enough alike that there could be problems and well…there's enough former rangers that know about Kimberly that- I don't want there to be issues."
"Like your father saying you've finally lost it and coming after me for fun?" Tommy asked and Thomas just nodded. His father was probably the biggest threat, but he was not the only threat to them in this world. As much as he hated being pulled into other worlds, he had to admit that Tommy's had been a nice reprieve. "That would be problematic. Babe- you okay?"
"Not really, but I guess this is better than being pulled to another universe when I've just had a baby. We just disappeared from your parents house and they…they can't protect Jay and Kira…" Kim trailed off as she took in a deep breath and Tommy sat down next to her and pulled her into his side. "If we're here though…"
"It should mean that Kiros isn't too far from making an appearance," Tommy stated as she just shook her head again and looked around the room. "I explained to Thomas and…Katy?"
"I'm not Katy in your world?" Katy asked as Tommy shook his head and Kim watched as the pain filled his face. He had been far closer to Katherine than she had ever been and even though they'd broken up, she knew this had to hurt to see her still alive and married to a version of him. Katy glanced over at Thomas and he couldn't meet her gaze. He had told her very little about his time in their world, so little that she didn't even know Tommy's last name. "I'm not alive in your world anymore."
"How many rangers that…that you…that I worked with…" Tommy trailed off as Thomas stared at him in horror. Tommy was going to get to see all of his friends again, but none of them were going to be in his home world. It had been bad enough for him to see Kimberly- this was dozens of people for the both of them. "She was the only one you lost."
"Yeah, all of my rangers are…" Thomas trailed off as JJ looked between all of them, knowing that there was something they were leaving out. "Breakfast?"
"I'd kill for some coffee," Tommy said with a wry smile and Katy nodded at him before motioning for him to follow her. JJ and Thomas pulled Kim to her feet and settled on each side of her, exchanging a glance above her head. This was going to be hard for them and everyone else was going to be hard for Kimberly and Tommy.
"What the hell were you thinking?" Jason asked as he met Thomas at the doors of the Academy. Mitchell had blasted an email to all of the senior mentors about Thomas' plans and most of the mentors were losing it. The handful that weren't had served on teams with Thomas and knew more about who Mitchell Trueheart truly was. While Mitchell had been off of the Power Ranger staff for decades, he still felt the need to call on his trusted inner circle whenever he thought Thomas did something wrong. Many of the senior mentors had been brought in on Thomas' family history, but not many of them actually believed it. While Theo had still been on the staff, he had been able to mitigate a lot of the issues that Mitchell stirred up, but he had retired at the beginning of the year. "You just said you'd kill your father if he got in your way. Brittany and the others are losing their shit right now, T."
"I have my reasons. We can discuss them this afternoon- there's some guests you need to meet," Thomas said as he stepped out of the way to reveal Tommy and he watched as Jason froze in his tracks. Tommy then pulled Kimberly up next to him and wrapped an arm around her as he stared at Jason. "Jason Scott- this is Tommy Oliver and-"
"Holy shit- Kimberly?" Jason asked as he reached out to her and she closed her eyes for a moment before the tears started to fall. He even acted like their Jason, even if he looked more guarded and experienced than Jason ever had. "What…I'm sorry."
"Not your fault, we just never thought we'd see you again," Tommy said as he fought the lump in his throat and Jason looked over at Thomas. What were they talking about? "Some things unfolded quite differently in our universe. If you're going to introduce us to everyone- we're going to need a crate of kleenex."
"Not everyone, but many of them do work here on the staff," Thomas said as they both nodded. Neither of them had thought about how they would react to this. It hadn't really crossed their minds that they would be seeing any rangers aside from Thomas. "But it's not necessary for Kimberly…"
"Your rule is that we have a current ranger with us when we aren't at your house or here. I'm pretty sure his rule is that I stay with him, so we might as well get this over with," Kim joked as she wiped her eyes again. There was pain in seeing him again, but there was also joy that her friend had a full life here. "Can…can I have a hug?"
"Sure," Jason muttered as Kim walked over to him and he wrapped her up in a bear hug. While he was not their Jason- this still felt like her friend. "There's a conference room that's free for the next couple of hours. I can get the other staffers."
"Thank you," Thomas said and he nodded for Tommy and Kimberly to follow him as Jason jogged off. They took in the Romanesque revival courtyard that they walked past and it hit home just how old the Power Ranger academy must be in this world. While their academy was established in a neo-gothic armory on Park Avenue, it had been modernized in ways that this academy never would be. "The Academy is one of the safest places in my universe, but with Kiros returning…I will need you to brief the staff on what you know."
"Are you up for that?" Tommy asked as Kim shook her head, but also gave him a determined look. "Hon, you don't have to- I can explain."
"It should be me, they may ask questions that help us to pinpoint how long we have and you don't have that information," Kim stated as she shook her head again. She could feel her emotions boiling right below the surface and it wasn't going to take much to push her over the edge, but one look at Tommy let her know he was even closer to the edge. "But I'm going to need a minute to pull it together after we see everyone."
"I think we can accommodate that," Thomas said as he looked over at Tommy and caught the concern in his eyes. He didn't blame the man for being concerned about his pregnant wife and prophetess, especially in the universe where she had died. "Pick a seat."
"How many…" Kim trailed off as she looked at the size of the room and then back over at Thomas. "There's a lot of people in the ranger pipeline."
"It's one of the most prestigious jobs here," Thomas supplied as he settled into the seat at the head of the table and they settled next to each other. "I know this isn't what you expected."
"We didn't know what to expect," Kim said as she shook her head. She had seen glimpses of this world, but they were only really falling into place now that she was in it. "We should have thought about seeing everyone again. The only person we knew was dead, was me."
Jason opened the door and the procession of staff members started to file in. Rocky, Adam, and Tanya walked in first and all gave Thomas a look before they settled at the table. Andros and Cassie came in laughing with each other as Leo shook his head at Maya. Chad, Joel, and Wes were hastily toweling off and gave Tommy a double take as they walked past. Conner and Kira filed in before several rangers joined them that were not familiar to Tommy. He squeezed his eyes shut as Kim grabbed his hand and he looked over at her. Tears were streaming down his face and he curled into her arms as the sobs came. The pain at seeing so many people that should still be alive in their world was almost too much for him to bear.
"Thomas?" Conner asked as Kimberly and Thomas looked up at him and he nodded towards the upset man. "Did we do something wrong?"
"No," Kimberly responded as Tommy continued to sob against her. "Do you know who we are?"
"No, someone, just said to get our asses in here as quickly as possible," Wes stated as he glared over at Jason, but he noticed some of the older rangers were staring at her. They were starting to piece it together, but he wasn't sure how that was possible. "Should I know who they are?"
"Holy shit…" Rocky trailed off as he quickly looked between Thomas and Kimberly. Recognition dawned as he realized who was sitting in front of him and he glanced back up to see the pain Thomas was hiding. Most of the people in this room had never met her, but they had all heard of her. They had all read her prophecies and seen the handful of photos that Thomas kept hidden from the world. "Kimberly?"
"THAT Kimberly?" Conner blurted out as Thomas scratched the back of his neck and gave a noncommittal shrug. As the rangers moved on to the staff, they were introduced to more information about who wrote the prophecies and how they related to the rangers. Most of them were soundly shocked when they found out about who Kimberly was to Thomas.
"I'm Kimberly Oliver and in our world- none of you are alive and he tried to save all of you. Atlantis killed everyone but him…well…us," Kim stated as Tommy still clutched to her and she looked at the rangers. All levity was sucked out of the room as they sobered and glanced around at each other. They were all dead? "We never thought we would see any of you again, much less be brought to your universe to stop Kiros."
"That's not possible," Tanya stated as she looked around the room. "None of that is possible."
"Several of you have been taken to different times, a few of you to different worlds. I went to theirs when they needed help re-establishing mentors and yogen-sha," Thomas stated as he leaned back in his chair. He knew that everyone in this room needed to know what she had seen. He also knew that he had to give them enough credibility that they would really listen, the rangers here were treated differently than in Tommy's world. "The books my father kept from us included Kimberly seeing that someone could defeat Kiros. And that was Tommy Oliver. I didn't tell you that I had met him because I hoped he'd never have to come here."
"I'm still stuck on all of us dying," Cassie said as she looked over at Thomas. Terror gripped them as they thought about the Atlantis protocol and what it would mean on this planet. There were so many more rangers in this world. "Is there a chance that will happen here?"
"I don't think so. You don't have the conflicts between Guardians and Power Rangers that we have. We found out that the Power Rangers in our universe killed almost all of the Guardians over 2000 years ago and then…then the remaining Guardian from that time decided the Power Rangers were out of control. Atlantis came after and killed every ranger, but us and he nearly accomplished that too," Kim forced out as she fought to keep herself here and to not relive the night they had almost died. She knew that Tommy was struggling with the same thing as his grip on her tightened. She lowered her eyes to Tommy as he had quieted but was still struggling to regulate his breathing. The rangers in the room felt their betrayal and also couldn't believe that this had happened. "My prophetess powers were taken away for nearly 20 years. I had seen all of it happen and one of our friends decided it was best to…to keep me alive, he thought he could convince his brother to not go through with it. He couldn't. It was only after he restored my powers that we really understood how dangerous Kiros was and what he could do."
"My father decided to not inform me that he had information that Kiros would eventually set his sights on JJ. That's why I told him I'd kill him if I found out he was withholding any more information. This isn't the first time we've found out that he's kept something critical from us since he was forced to leave," Thomas stated and he watched the variety of reactions come from his staff. Some were furious, others were concerned, and still others were frustrated. None of them, however, reacted positively to his father's decision and that was what he needed to see. "Dad and Uncle Robert are coming in this afternoon and we'll talk with them about what the next steps are; what they may be able to get out of my father."
"That's a serious accusation that he would purposefully do this," Adam said as Thomas nodded. "Thomas…we've all known that he…that the two of you have never gotten along…is there anything else he may know that would make this make sense?"
"Maybe, but that isn't what he offered when he explained that he knew this was going to happen," Thomas stated as he let out a frustrated sigh. "That can be handled later. If you're able to Kim, I'd like for this group to hear what you have seen."
"You don't have to," Tommy whispered as he sat up and she gave him a smile as she gently cupped his face. She was proud of him in a way that she couldn't explain and that he wouldn't want to hear, but this man was so different than the one that had buried all of his rangers four years ago.
"I know, but we're here to defeat Kiros. We're going to need their help," Kim said as she leaned forward to give him a quick kiss and then turned to address the room. "The visions started a little over a year ago. We had figured out that Shelby…Shelby and I were seeing three different universes. This universe, our universe, and a third. I don't know much about the third, but I do know that Kiros exists in all three universes, well he existed in ours- Tommy was able to defeat him. The vision that I had- I wish I had my papers. It showed that Kiros was, is a threat to JJ. Over the last year, I've seen Kiros getting closer and closer to JJ, to the rangers here. There is someone he's working with, but they've always been just out of my sight. Whoever it is, is helping Kiros to be able to get close to JJ when the time is right. The fact that we're here, means the time is nearly right."
"If he is the one who defeats Kiros- why are you here?" Andros asked as Tommy glared at him.
"She helps me. Since she was a Power Ranger in our world, she's able to use her prophetess powers to ground me and her residual ranger powers-" Tommy stopped as he noticed the room was suddenly agitated. "What?"
"It explains why you are able to defeat him," Thomas said as he shook his head. Kim had shown potential, she had shown so much potential that they'd nearly put her name in for powers just to see what happened, but they didn't. Ultimately, Theo had been overruled when he tossed it out as an option and he had regretted not pushing against it ever since her death. They had all wondered what would have happened if she had had powers when he came. "I don't know why I didn't realize it when I was with you. There's an old prophecy, well before any of our times- that talks about these soulmate rangers and how one has extra powers. It's in old English, so forgive me if I don't quote it. It is said that when they work together- there is nothing in the universe that they can't defeat. That's why I never stood a chance, Kimberly wasn't able to have extra here."
"So- what's the plan?" Maya asked as she opened a tablet and began taking notes. "We'll need to get the current rangers up to speed and prepared. If they are as close as they say- to be able to get Kiros to a Trueheart…"
The room went silent as they collectively realized how serious this problem was. There was someone in their midst that had sold out the Truehearts. And there was going to be no easy way to tell friend from foe.
