There was a voice.
"Relon!"
He could hear a muffled sound.
"Relon! Wake up!"
Why couldn't he recognize it?"
"Relon!"
It wasn't familiar…
"Please!"
Then it hit.
All at once, his consciousness stirred in realization.
Vermilion eyes snapping open, he saw not just the moon but the familiar umbreon atop his lap. Its relieved smile told him that he was indeed still alive as was it. Though even more so that the pokémon before him was not only indeed Eve but also speaking his language.
"How…? Why?"
"Tethered One."
Oh yeah. One look up at the roosting bird of destruction told him both how he could talk to pokémon and why they were in their current situation.
"Yveltal…"
"Relon!" Reminded of his companion, he had to caress the worried umbreon.
"I'm alright, Eve."
"Really? You're not just saying that are you?"
"I'm not, I swear." He could only smile at the relieved breath the dog exuded.
"That's relieving to hear. After all this, I-" Then she froze. Slowly, her now red eyes and black pupil widened at the male. "You understood me…" She mumbled in realization.
"Yeah. I guess we have Yveltal to thank for that, right?" He wondered, redirecting his attention to said avian.
"It would seem so. To think I would become linked to a human like few of my kind have, it is difficult to put into words."
"Well, given how weird the last 24 hours have been for us, I'd say this is easily a close second." He managed out a wry chuckle.
"Oh? Do tell, what topples my own presence?" There was no intimidation despite her creening neck now raised to emphasize her legendary status.
"Try dying," Eve spat out in defeat curling atop Relon's now crossed lap to hang her head off the side. "Destruction can't beat Death itself, now can it?"
Whether taken aback by either Eve's words or bland attitude, he couldn;t discern. Though the slow hum that left the bird's throat made her at least seem to take into account what Eve said.
"My condolences."
That made both jerk slightly. For a pokémon like Yveltal who was known to destroy and snuff out light itself, it left them both at a loss for words to put it simply.
"You believe us?"
"It is not a matter of believing. Logic simply dictates this must be the answer."
"When you put it like that, I guess you're right. And… thank you. Being reborn in a familiar world that isn't exactly my own is still something I'm getting used to."
"You and me both, Relon." Eve chuckles.
"Given a second chance at life is a blessing. One I know Lord Arceus himself and Ho-Oh to be capable of issuing to name a few. Still, that explains the cause behind our tethering."
"Our… link?"
"Yes. That. As well as my residual essence going into this umbreon."
"I have a name, you know. It's Eve."
"Oh yeah! You're an umbreon now. Wait, if you didn't become an umbreon through natural means but due to Yveltal's dark aura, then… You don't think…"
"Yup." She simply says lifting her head before plopping it back down. "Form change."
"Meaning you can go back to being an eevee?" He arches a curious brow, holding back his shock.
"Probably. I just need to exhaust all this power inside somehow."
"So just like the eevee in my past life, you temporarily accessed your evolved form. In this case; umbreon. I wonder…"
"If I can do similar stuff if we run into other pokémon with strong power like Yveltal here? Probably. We already have rough ideas where to find a lot of legendaries if this world mirrors the same landscape from my world and yours. I wouldn't mind temporarily being a flareon and enjoy an even bigger tuft of fur! Ooh! How about a vaporeon so I can liquidate and be one with water?"
On and on she went rambling idea after idea. He could only chuckle at her nonchalant nature. He knew in their other lives how energetic and outgoing she was so seeing it like this, especially given what they've recently gone through, it was a nice change of pace. One he'd happily take.
"You speak as though you both have encountered others of my kind before." At the voice of the legendary, Eve shot right up.
"Oh yeah! Tons of them! Beaten a decent amount too! Though we haven't met you or Xerneas back from our world, we have met many of the legends from other regions! The Bird and Dog Trios, Mew, Lugia and Ho-Oh, Kyogre and Groundon and Rayquaza, Dialga and Palkia! Not to mention good ole Zekrom, Reshiram, and Kyurem! We've met, befriended, and fought so many!"
Clearly in disbelief, Yveltal turned their attention to the male for confirmation.
"Eve's world was within mine. It's hard to explain but she, and to an extent myself, did in fact meet all of those pokémon." He felt any attempt at explaining how exactly they did would take too long so it was better to keep it short and just agree.
"Getting hit by Kyogre's Origin Pulse and Lugia's Areblast sure stung but not all of our encounters ended in fights." Eve chirps out.
"Would you do it all over again."
"Heck no! Not unless you plan on finding all the legends to unlock more transformations I can access because nothing I trip has worked."
"Is that why you were panting when I came to? I thought the transformation had tuckered you out. That or you and Yveltal were fighting."
"Given I'm a dark type, I'm not very effective against others of the same type. Not to mention she's a legendary."
"Huh… Fair point."
"Hmm…" Heads lifting up, both had nearly forgotten about the looming presence of the bird. "Fascinating…"
"Hey, Yveltal, since you're awake and are linked with Relon, why not become his pokémon?" Immediately, Relon gaped at the girl.
"Eve?! What are you talking about?!"
"What? Yveltal isn't known to do anything with preserving the environment. What we know is that Yveltal stays in its cocoon for however long, wakes up mad, and goes on a rampage. You know what she hasn't done? Go on a rampage. Besides, you're now linked and linked humans and pokémon need to stay together. Not to mention, what if you start using her powers and go out of control?"
As much as he wanted to refute the idea, he couldn't deny her logic was beyond sound. Still, the idea of having a powerful pokémon like Yveltal on his side did have a lot more pros than cons. A subtle look at the bird told she too was in thought at the idea.
"Relon." He jumped at the call despite how calm it was. For a legendary like Yveltal to call him by name, it was a nerving thing. "I wish to ask you a series of questions. What you say will determine my answer."
At that, he felt the need to rise as Eve hopped off his lap so he could properly face the avian.
"Okay. Ask away."
"You have perished only to be given another chance. What are your plans moving forward?"
"Once I have supplies, I plan to venture out and find our friends."
"You refer to your pokémon, no?"
"I do."
"Yet you do not claim them as your own."
"They may be but I see them more as friends and family than simple creatures with my name. Just like us humans, they too have feelings. They have wants and needs and as their friend and trainer, I want to be able to provide that which will make them the most happiest." He could only smile as Eve brushed against his leg affectionately.
"I see. Next question. I am the Destruction pokémon. Where do your thoughts lie in that concept alone?"
"Do you go out of your way to cause misery and ruin lives?" He asked immediately which caught Yveltal off-guard for a moment.
"... I do not."
"Then I see no issue. You're a pokémon like Eve. So I'll treat you the same as I do her, as a friend. If anyone dares to harm you, they'll have to answer to me."
"That goes double for me! We dark types have to stick together."
"Eve, you're only temporarily a dark type." He chides.
"Still a dark type." He could only chuckle at her attitude.
"Once we find the others, we'll find a quiet place to settle down and go from there."
"We could tackle the gym circuit. Though with how strong we are, it'll be unfair for all of the gym leaders."
"You don't even know how tough this world's gym leaders are."
"Are they tougher than their champions?"
"Probably not given they're, you know, the champions."
"Therefore, I am equal to one champion's ace and through that, stronger than all of the gym leaders."
"Eve, your logic doesn't only not compute but the sense is missing a lot of things needed to… well make sense."
"All I'm saying is that after all we've been through, the only challenge we should have is fighting other champions since we're technically at that level and or legendaries."
"Strength-wise yeah, but I'm still a novice trainer with little actual battling experience. In-game is super different from real life, you know."
"Ahem." Once more, both jumped to sheepishly chuckle at how easily they forgot the cause behind them still being at the bottom of the basin. "Eve." Perking at the name, she looks at the legendary. "From your life's experience with my Tethered One, what are your honest thoughts on him as a person, not as a trainer?"
"Relon is my best friend. He was there when I first came into this world. He's always looked out for me, taught me, cared for me. Without him, I wouldn't be here much less the pokémon you're talking to. He's my world because he's a world anyone would love to be a part of and protect."
"Eve…"
"I see… Tethered One."
"Y-Yes?"
"You humans keep pokémon in those capsules, correct? Shall I be required to remain inside?"
"You mean a pokéball? No. Eve here dislikes being in them so she's always outside. If you wish to remain inside or be out and about, the choice is yours as it's your freedom. I'd simply ask that you let me capture you so no one else can steal you away if given the opportunity. As you're a wild pokémon, anyone can toss a ball that'll suck you inside."
"If I were under you, such issues would be of no worry," she surmises to receive nods from the two.
A long moment of silence came. The odd atmosphere alone made Relon gulp.
There was seriously no way something like this could happen, right?
"Very well."
Apparently it could.
"Yes!" The voice of Eve jumped in the air in glee.
"Really?" Relon could only blink in disbelief. "A-Are you sure?"
"Whether I am right or wrong remains to be seen. However, this chance encounter is not by mere coincidence. Something far greater allowed for such a chance meeting between you and I."
"Like what?"
"That even I cannot fathom. Whether Lord Arceus themself or something not of this world. Regardless, Your heart is pure. That I can tell based on not just yourself but young Eve as well.
"Oh… Well, thank you Yveltal. I'll strive to be someone that'll make you proud."
"Do not worry over such things. Simply continue to be whom you are best at being; Tethered One."
"Teehee, acting all modest before Yveltal is so not you Relon." Eve grinned.
"Hey! I'm just showing respect is all! Leave me alone!" Despite his response, the tension once in his body left immediately. Truly, Eve would be a remedy for him in the coming times ahead.
"Now then, Yveltal!" Eve spoke rushing over and hopping onto the back of the legendary to Relon's quiet worry. For her to just jump onto the Destruction pokémon without a care made his body stiffen for good reasons. "Think you could get us out of here? We still gotta find food and water. Haven't exactly had any since we died, hehe." The fact she said that so casually…
"Of course. Tethered One, do climb on as well."
"R-Right!" Awkwardly moving to her rear and climbing from her tail to the tuft of fur where Eve was hunkered, he could only give the evolved dog an irksome look to her amusement. "Ready."
Without warning, Yveltal's wings flapped once as both felt their bodies press into the bird. Eyes forced shut, the sudden force fled as soon as it had appeared. Hesitantly, his eyes peeled open.
"Wow…"
As far as the eye could see, nothing but forests littered the land with distant mountains acting as a barrier of sorts. High above, the moon's glow through the clouds gave everything a glimmering tint.
"It's so pretty!" Eve coos. "Yveltal, is this why you chose this spot in particular?"
"Originally, I chose it due to its reclusiveness from humanity as a way to sleep undisturbed but it seems this spot was a poor choice."
"Haha, sorry about that Yveltal."
"Do not be, Tethered One. If not for choosing that spot, our encounter may not have occurred."
"She has a point, Relon. Speaking of, I get why you call him 'Tethered One' but you can just call him Relon. He's a pretty casual nerd."
"Oh? Very well. I shall keep that in mind."
"Excuse me? I am not a nerd!"
"Who spent how many years walking from region-to-region studying about pokémon?"
He couldn't refute that.
He hated that he couldn't refute that.
He knew that she knew that he couldn't refute that.
"I'll get you back later," he grumbled to earn a cheery nuzzle from the girl.
"Teehee, ya love me."
"Your relationship is quite amusing."
"Oh! Wait until you meet the others! You'll love them!"
"We just have to find them first. That's the hard part."
"Oh, we will." Eve grins. "Life has an interesting way of bringing people and pokémon together after all."
For his starter to be so positive meant she was either super optimistic or her own life experiences made such worrying matters obsolete. He had a lot to learn. From both Yveltal and Eve.
Bang!
It was a sound many knew of despite never hearing in their lives. The sound of a gunshot.
What even fewer have heard… was an endless salvo.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
A countless barrage of flashes sent all wildlife flying or running away as fast as they could.
It lasted on seconds. Maybe 10. But that was enough for the deafening silence to inflict an even stronger fear in Relon as he stood.
Fear of the unknown.
Yet, he had to go. He needed to see the cause behind such. The lingering sense of dread could not be suppressed.
Then another sound came. This one directly below. It was layered so there was multiple sources matching. It was a whirring sound accompanied by lights; vehicles in motion.
"What are vehicles doing in a place like this?" Eve wondered watching the vehicles drive past them in the distance.
"Yveltal," the quiet voice of Relon spoke. "Go to where those lights were."
"Are you sure?"
"Please."
Every fiber of his body wanted to ignore it. Every part within himself screamed not to go that way. The countless images that filled his head made him not want to be anywhere near that spot.
As Yveltal descended before the location, Eve could only gasp in horror as he stepped off the legendary.
Corpses massacred, mauled, sliced, and punctured full of holes littered the area. Men, women, elderly, even children. At his feet, a baby leaking blood from a hole in its skull.
He hated the idea of what they'd find.
But…
The only thing his mind could manifest worse was the thought of such criminals getting away with such an act.
At once, a vile power exploded around him.
"Relon?!" Eve gasped as the shockwave from her trainer. A red and black aura veiled itself over his person. Its power so dense, his own body could barely be seen.
Then he shot into the sky to hover still. Carefully, as though in search of something, he spun until he stopped.
Then Eve saw it.
His hands encircled the other leaving only a small space. From it, his ominous power seeped into that space.
"What's happening?!" Eve exclaimed as Yveltal only looked on.
"He's unleashing it."
"Unleashing what?!" The look the legendary gave her finally allowed a new level of panic to set in.
"Oblivion Wing."
Then he fired.
