Relon and Eve had been maneuvering through group after group of Team Chaos grunts and all the while, there was no signs of any of who they were seeking.
"Where?" Relon demanded inwardly as they hurried down a hall. "Where?" Seeing grunts begin to turn towards them, they diverged towards a different hall. "Where?!"
Then they saw it. As if suddenly returning back to the entrance, the hall ahead became natural sediment once more as lights hung from the wall illuminated the way.
Turning the corner, he nearly stumbled backwards. Peering around said corner, he could see a metallic door guarded by more grunts.
Then it opened.
Out came a bespeckled old man hunched over. Immediately Relon thought back to those evil old men scientist tropes. Short height, wore glasses, had a small hunch, disturbing grin.
Catching him wipe likely saliva from the corner of his lips, he arches back releasing a loud scream of what Relon could only guess to be glee.
"AHHHH! TO THINK SUCH REWARDS WOULD BE BLESSED! PATIENCE ONCE AGAIN DEFEATS THAT OF IMPATIENCE! THE COUNTLESS PEONS THAT HAVE WASTED OUR TIME, OUR EFFORTS, WERE NOT IN VAIN! FINALLY! FINALLY! WE'VE BEEN GIFTED NOT ONE UNIQUE SPECIMEN BUT TWO!" Both Relon and Eve could only watch in disturbed horror and anger as the old man finally simmered down from his blissful rant. "You lot, guard them until I return! My genius mind requires reprieve in the latrine and then tend to that other one. Such beautiful specimens need to be further delved upon in great detail. I must be careful with how I defile their greatness so that I can remake them into even purer perfection! HAHAHA!"
Eve despised evil humans. She hated those that tarnished other people's and pokémon's lives. There were a select few that even she would be fine with their lives "mysteriously" vanishing. This man- no. This despicable thing that walked atop planet Earth with a mind did not deserve anything but the worst of fate.
Similar to her trainer, her eyes bore into the back of the aloof professor as he passed by them, none the wiser to their presence.
"Eve…"
"Either we get him or Yveltal will," was her empty response.
They didn't need to look at the other to be in agreement. He'd save his anger for that man alone.
Peering down to see the short devil no longer in sight, they moved. Without warning, Eve blitzed forward unleashing a giant Shadow Ball.
"What the- Argh!" It was all a grunt could sound as he and the others were blown away before they could even react.
"Let's see…" Relon mumbled, inspecting one grunt after another. "Bingo!" He sounded, finding a key card.
With a quick insertion, the door opened. Stepping through for it to close behind them, he was once again met with that empty feeling descending in his chest.
There, hung and chain-bound by the shackles that gripped both their appendages and the metallic wall, lied a girl.
Lifeless, exhausted eyes began to move in response. Lifting to finally take in the boy, fear sprung to the forefront. As dire as her attempt to squirm free, her chains made all efforts futile.
"Sabrina, it's me!" Instinctively, out of concern, he took a single step forward.
The moment he did, the sound alone echoed throughout the room.
As if responding to his intrusion, the motion dim lights turned on momentarily stunning the two. As Relon's eyes adjusted, he couldn't stop his jaw from going slack and blood still.
A young woman, likely around his age, hung before him. Immediately, he could tell she wasn't Sabrina.
The psychic's red eyes, the brighter yin to his yang, contrasted with the girl's steel blue. Her unkempt navy blue hair littered her back as only a ragged cloth veiled what of her body it could. Despite it all, he could help but admire the beauty she held.
"Who… are you?"
"I'm here to help." He was honest, as cautious as could be but her tattered will didn't falter.
"Lies," she muttered in defeat, averting her gaze off to the ground. "You'll just do… what that scientist does…" Tears began to well. As an insurmountable amount of agony, memories flooding back to her consciousness likely, that rage not yet used to sensing began to stir.
"I mean it," his distorted voice spoke, catching her attention.
When she looked back, he saw him place a hand on his chest. He was trembling. Why? His umbreon was looking up with worry, with emotions. All of Team Chaos' other pokémon never showed emotions. They were seen as tools and acted as such just like their owners so… why were these two doing the opposite?
"I… came here to help, to save everyone." He then began to move forward. "Eve."
"Right!" She nodded, though all the girl heard was a yip.
Without hesitation, Eve moved forward. Tail glowing in a metallic sheen, the girl could only flinch awaiting the pain for it to never come. Only the crumbling of metal.
Then she felt her body fall only to feel something soft catch her. She flinched but didn't pull away. He was warm, his hold on her was tender as though he thought she'd break. He was thoughtful.
With how her life has been for years, she'd long since believed that to eventually happen. On the cusp of giving up, hope long since dead, this stranger- no… this savior appeared. Her savior.
"Can you stand?" He asked.
Only then did she lift her gaze to meet his. The first thing her mind thought when their eyes locked was how similar they were. His was a dim red similar to her tinted blue. Beyond that, she could see it. His concern for her well-being as well as the fury that hid beneath the surface.
She gave a slow nod before wincing. Too caught in the sudden pain, she felt herself falter for him to pull her inward. Once again, she rested against him. His heartbeat was racing. Surely, it was just due to the situation they were in, right?
"I got you."
She couldn't be weak at a time like this. The unannounced chance at freedom had arrived and she'd be damned if she'd become a liability!
"I… can move." Reluctantly, she moved herself away with only his hand holding hers. "No need to worry."
"Seeing someone like you in the state you're in, how can I not?" He calmly argued back moving to support her. The firm look he sported told her there was no refuting his assistance.
"... Thank you." She relented, her voice although weak, held a sliver of hope. to finally notice his trembling form. "There…" She weakly points to a door towards the back of the room.
"Don't thank me yet." He mumbled, the two carefully moving to the back before going through. "Dawn. That's my name… by the way."
Taken aback for a moment, he mirrored her small smile.
"Relon. Let's hurry and get out of here before you rise, shall we?" God, that was corny.
Her brows flinched before her chest moved as a giggle sounded.
Corny as it may have been, it was needed.
Pulling the knob, they slowly enter for his eyes to buck wide. "What the hell…?!"
Cages upon cages of people and pokémon filled the large room.
"This is where… his collection is kept…" She manages. "That door is where… the others are. Hurry…"
He wanted to protest but she was right. There were others whom that mad scientist had abused and worse.
"Eve, help her free everyone! I'll be right back!"
"On it!" In a black blur, Iron Tail after Iron Tail smacked the cages as the girl began to assist with helping everyone out.
Wasting no time, he rushes through prying open the door before vanishing inside. Immediately, dim LED lights filled his vision as monitors surrounded two girls huddled together at the center of the smaller room.
Bound by surgery tables, his throat got caught up. Same slim young woman his height. Same long sangria-colored hair with shorter layers around her face. Same bright red eyes. Same Sabrina.
"Sabrina…!" He gasped, rushing towards the chained duo.
Once more he came to a halt as the girl he's looked forward to reuniting with scowled. Thankfully, that glare turned into confusion as the other girl she was protecting finally peered curiously at her. A girl he's seen before.
"Anabel?" He failed to hide the tears beginning to form at the corner of his eyes.
He'd journeyed all over the world and studied both pokémon as well as important or popular figureheads. Gym leaders, coordinators, and of course frontier brains. During his early puberty years, he'd gotten a small crush for the tomboyish Frontier Brain. Same slender form, same lilac-colored hair, and same purple eyes. Only now, bandages littered her joints and neck.
"Relon…?" He felt his heart begin to grow heavy as the ability to quiver his lips soon became uncontrollable. Then, a sight he sure wasn't expecting at first thought, Sabrina too began to tear up. "You too…?" Her voice was hurt, defeated even. "I thought…" She faltered in her explanation as it became harder to breathe.
Shaking his head profusely to stay focused, he looked at the two.
"Keys. Where?" He nearly gasped out.
"At that computer! First drawer!"
With haste, he moved, gripping the edge of the desk to help halt his momentum. Opening the drawer, thankful for Team Chaos' complacency, he began pouring out files and other miscellaneous objects until a single pair of keys was left.
Rushing over, he snapped his arm of the frantic shaking it was causing. With deep focus, he began unlocking the sockets one by one before moving over to the once Frontier Brain. She was clearly equally confused compared to her once frightened form.
Hesitantly, she lifted out her hands. With a few clicks, the quiet girl was free as was Sabrina. As they gazed at their new status, he backed away. Only in doing so did Sabrina look at him once more.
"Relon…" Once again he shook his head as she approached. Against his will, she brought him closer, embracing him as tightly as she could. "Thank you." She whimpered out, something Relon never thought he'd hear from the strong trainer.
"Mm." He felt weak at the knees as he reciprocated the gesture. "I'm glad…" He managed out. "To have someone remember me."
Pulling back to meet his eyes, she could only manage a wry smile. "Same here."
Their second embrace only tightened further as he just sank into her endearing touch. Eyes opening to the quiet girl, one exchange of eye contact told what she needed.
"Anabell…" He called weakly.
"You too," Sabrina gestured for the girl with wet treks to shuffle into their group hug.
After a long moment, they finally separated.
"We can catch up once we're out of here. Can you two walk?"
"I can," Sabrina said, eyes going to Anabel. "Help Anabel. They've drugged our psychic abilities."
"Drugged?" He said in disbelief as she weakly departed for the exit. Science was truly terrifying.
Feeling a tug at his sleeve, his eyes went to Anabel who only shook her head pointing at her fellow psychic.
She needs more help! He nearly jumped, looking wide-eyed at the tomboy.
"Did… you just speak?" His comment in turn made her own eyes go wide.
You can hear me? Only pokémon and other psychics have been able to understand me!
Holding a hand to his head from the slight pounding, she immediately recoils.
I-I'm sorry. Please, forgive me.
"N-No, you're fine. A lot happened to me so I guess given I can communicate with pokémon the way I can, I can also understand you. Don't worry, I'm getting everyone out of here. And I'll make sure Sabrina doesn't do anything too reckless." He could only give a smile, regardless of his shaky form. "Let's hurry, Anabel," he said offering a hand.
Stunned for a moment, her eyes looked to her kind savior. Outside of the other captives and Sabrina, she'd begun to give up on the human heart. She'd fought back the lingering thoughts but each day became harder and harder. Only now did she realize just how close she was to giving up.
Your name is Relon, correct? She asked, leaning in as he put a supportive arm around her while nearing the door.
"Y-Yeah."
You're both brave and kind. It was a simple compliment, one that he'd argue was not at all true. Although right now wasn't the right time for such things. Thank you.
Three thanks from three girls in such a short time? Either his new life was full of good things to happen or all the good was happening now before the bad.
"I'm just doing what's right," he offered as the door opened to find all of the prisoners freed. Hearing the door open, dozens upon dozens of heads turned their way.
"Relon!" Attention going to Eve approach, he crouches down to caress the black dog. The sensation alone already began to wash away his nerves as he saw the blue-haired girl approach.
"Are you okay?" Sabrina asks.
"No need…" She winces to forcibly shrug off the pain. "To worry. You two had it much worse than us."
"Let's get going! Come on!"
Rushing with Eve at his side through the crowd, he felt his head become slightly heavy.
Relon.
Stopping on a dime to look back at Sabrina assist Anabel, his attention went towards the exit.
Yveltal?
Good. Our telepathic link is active. Make haste to the entrance. I see reinforcements in the distance approaching.
Without time to process, he could only look at all of the people.
"TIME TO GO! STAY TOGETHER AND FOLLOW ME!" Now it was a race against the clock. One they had to beat. "Eve!" He commanded, the umbreon already firing a supercharged Shadow Ball to blast a hole in the door.
Seeing the guards still out cold, he could only mentally thank Eve's strength. It was needed more now than ever.
"What the-" A guard wondered coming out from around a corner. "Hey, what's-"
"Knock 'em out!" Like a bullet, Eve blurred forward striking the man sending him ragdolling across the dirt floor and onto the metal one. "Any you see, don't give them the chance!"
"Say less! Just follow me!" Eve called, taking the lead.
With a kick in her step, she took off for the lights to turn red.
"They know!" A voice calls from behind.
"Keep moving!" The voice of Sabrina calls from somewhere in the back.
"Help…"
The rumbling chaos all around suddenly felt drowned out by the singular voice. Where had he heard-
"You dumbass, don't you dare die on us!"
Then it clicked. And he took off down a different hall.
"Relon?!" Eve exclaimed, skidding to a halt.
"Keep going! I got to save one more person!" He called, not waiting for a response to come.
Under the red lit halls, alarms began to sound. He needed to move, he didn't bother with stealth as guards saw him. They couldn't keep up and the one versus the many was an ill priority for any that chose to go after him.
"Where are you?" He gritted his teeth, eyes tracing all around. "Where? Where? Where? Absol!"
"Help me… Relon…"
He skidded to a halt. His heart, pumping at a million beats per second suddenly went mute once more. Eyes on a door, similar to the dozens he's passed. He reached for the knob.
Touching the knob, a sensation of power recognizable only as Yveltal's surged throughout his body.
"W-What?" He winced, feeling the power seep out against his will.
The only answer he knew he'd find lied on the other side of this door. With a turn of the knob, he entered.
There, he found her. An eerie red chain held her by the neck as other syringes remained lodged in parts of her body.
"Absol!"
The moment he called out her name, the pokémon struggled to lift its head up.
"Re…lon…"
Rushing over, the moment he stepped into the center of the room, red lasers emerged.
"What the?!" First came his questioned exclamation, then the hysterical laughter.
"Hohoho! Quite the mole I've captured if I must say so myself!"
His frantic eyes fell still at the wretched voice. Immediately, every bone in his body ached at the opportunity to bash the bastard. Lifting his head, there the short, fat, mad scientist stood over the second floor railing.
Any fear, any lingering signs of trembling vanished in Relon. All in its place was the clear intent to harm the man before him.
"To find such a troublemaker not only free my experiments but my rare specimens- erm, speciwomans and even my divine gift of an absol? Oh, hoho, that simply won't do. That young man is where I cross the line! Do you understand? I've finally had my breakthrough that Team Chaos has been searching for so long and I refuse to lose that now!"
"Shut up."
Now it was the villain who looked incredulous at the young man.
Quietly walking forward, he reached for the chain.
"Fool, you'll die touching-" With ease, he grasped the chain as its color brightened before it broke into pieces. "What?! Impossible."
Ignoring the man, Relon kneeled before the weak pokémon.
"I'm sorry for everything, Absol. I'll make it up to you starting… right… now." He mumbled, removing the last of the embedded wiring.
"Don't tell me… You're a hybrid, aren't you? Haha… HAHAHA! Arceus truly is looking upon my being! Like in ancient scriptures, it is spoken of Arceus' chosen ones being like that of angels gifting knowledge and prosperity to the less fortunate!"
"Angels?" His voice was quiet, yet cold. At once, the power of Yveltal began to seep outwards and subtly into Absol. "You see me as an angel, do you? You believe to be one that is 'less fortunate?' Call me an angel if you want. I'll play the roll, that's fine with me." The same as earlier, his stance slowly lowered as black and red manifested around him before converging in between his palms.
"Oh-hoho! Well then, do tell me what I desire!" He grins, withdrawing a pokéball. "Corviknight!" He exclaimed for a metallic hulking bird to appear. With a click of a button switch, he jumped to ascend through the hole towards the starry night sky.
"You're not… getting away!" Thrusting his hands outward, the beam of twin colors evaporated the lab where the scientist once stood. Careening, the beam up through the ceiling and towards the hole, the scientist can only grin as they reach the outside avoiding the attack.
He wouldn't get away… He wouldn't allow that! He needed to pay for what he's done!
Gathering Absol into his arms, not registering of the sudden strength, Relon shot up like a missile through the crumbling debris until the fresh night air graced his presence.
"Quite a lovely night, isn't it?" Head snapping to the man atop his avian, he holds two more pokéballs for a charizard and braviary to materialize next to him. Immediately, Relon's conscience recognized the mega stone. "A lovely night to die, aye my angel?!" With a thrust of his hand, both attacked.
Snapping to the side of Braviary's direct strike, he drops avoiding Charizard's Flamethrower attack.
"Hyper Beam!"
Shooting up to avoid the condensed normal type attack, he blurs around to slam a foot into Charizard's back, sending the fake dragon hurtling into the woods.
"Sky Attack!" The voice of Braviary exclaims for the male to effortlessly grab the bird by its beak, ceasing the attack. With a grip, said flying type wincing out a muffled caw, he spins it to release as it too crashed into Charizard before a low rumble erupted far below.
"To think I'd be blessed at seeing the power of a hybrid. Magnificent!"
"I… can… fight…"
Eyes momentarily on the weakened absol, his attention goes to the entrance a short ways away.
With a kick off, he boosted towards the direction. Hitting the ground with suddenly zero momentum, his eyes go to Yveltal and then to the escapees clearly shocked. One glance around and more grunts were now seen turned to stone.
"Relon!"
Looking at Sabrina stare shocked at his appearance, he could only lay absol down before backing away. A single glance at Yveltal nodding told the message was clear.
"Wait for me!" The voice of Eve exclaims bursting from under Yveltal to his side as a blast of light emerges from within the woods. "Try not to lose your cool, okay Relon?"
One's heart did not need to be human. Whether that or poké mon, it didn't matter. A kind heart could resonate with another. Whether that "other" was filled with love or anger.
Steadily, his powers calmed down before vanishing entirely. He recognized it, the potential he now had. Blinded by anger, he could face off against pokémon himself. He now understood what that bastard of a science-lover mentioned. A "hybrid." One like him, tethered to a pokémon who have gained powers to physically combat other pokémon.
"Yeah," he breathed out for a light to erupt in the distance.
"Mega evolution," Yveltal warned. "No. This is a feeble attempt at replicating such pure power."
"That's it?" Eve scoffs. "Yveltal, take care of everyone here. Relon and I got this!"
"Very well. End this insufferable human."
"Don't have to tell us! I'm itching to burn off this power!" In response, Eve's own form began to gain that red outline before the same aura enveloped her. As it once did with Relon.
"With pleasure," Relon murmurs to ball a fist as the shockwave comes.
"Here it comes!" Eve exclaims.
"Swift!" He commanded. Yellow rings glowing along her body, countless stars whirled like disks before shooting forward to meet circular wind blades ripping through the treeline. "Move!" He ordered, both taking off through the smoke.
"Fire Pledge!"
Through the smoke, lights of orange manifested as lines hurtling toward the two. Wasting no time, both dove out of the way as the searing heat past to sizzle out.
"Quick Attack into Iron Tail!"
Acting as Extremespeed, Eve struck the now black dragon sending it toppling over before pivoting and leaping over avoiding an Aerial Ace to follow-up with a strike of her metallic tail.
With a heavy smack, Braviary crashed resulting in a small crater.
"Hm, quite a strong umbreon. As for braviary; how disappointing." Head whirling up to the scientist point a ball before recalling the unconscious bird, he reveals his other hand where three more balls lie. "Perhaps I should have increased the difficulty from the start. Show me angel, what do you prophesize?" At his question, three lights emerged. "What does all of this destruction, all of this nonsense tell you?"
"Nonsense?" Relon's arm twitched at the word alone. Steadily, he felt the power begin to stir only for it to recede. "All I see is Eve and I taking you down!" He meant it. With Eve by his side, they'd make this man and all of Team Chaos regret everything.
"Oh… how disappointing. I was expecting a much different answer. Then again, you seem more tame now. No longer that spectacular beast that dominated my own pokémon mere moments ago. You've ruined my interest." He sighs to look off to take in the escapees. Though his eyes grew in shock, not at them. Not even the petrified grunts that once followed his orders. All his widening eyes could take in was Yveltal herself.
Her mesmerizing form stood with her wings outstretched as if to dare the man in trying any feeble attempt to harm her or the humans.
She was challenging him and the lustful idea of having such a legendary made him salivate.
"ATTACK!" He exclaimed, mad desire once again evident. "DUSKNOIR, PANGORO, CRYOGONAL, CORVIKNIGHT, CHARIZARD! CLAIM THAT DIVINE POWER BY STRIKING WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT!" Bellowing an uncontrollable roar, Charizard ushered all as they lined up preparing to fire. "FIRE!"
All five coordinated attacks ripped apart the surrounding environment converging on the legendary. Then the blast came. All the mad scientist could see was smoke.
Then a faint light seeped through the haze. Seeing a transparent light shimmering the moon's refraction, he could only stare in disbelief.
"Protect?!" As if in response to his gasp, red and black seeped outward once again as he saw Relon in that same familiar crouched position as earlier.
Vermilion eyes bore into the scientist's, their intentions a clear as the full moon.
"All of these innocent people! You hurt Anabel…!" A second surge of power exploded as the psychic lifted her head at the mention. "Sabrina!" The once gym leader looked on, her feelings matching Relon's own. "Dawn!" At a loss for words, she couldn't fight back the tears of pure awe. "Yveltal! Even Eve and Absol!" He seethed.
From behind, Dusknoir manifested with its hands reaching out.
"Relon, behind you!" Sabrina shouted, her attempt at raising a hand faltering for a figure to blur forward.
"You got my back, right… Absol?"
Silently, the young woman's red eyes bore into the ghost types singular own. Yveltal's power, steadily exuded, made her grip on Dusknoir's hands tighten
Grunting in response, It could only look helplessly in fear as she pulled it close to deliver a headbutt. Following up with a knee, it grunts for an ethereal power to resonate.
One look was all it saw before the Shadow Claw from the dual-haired human struck, sending the fully-evolved mon ragdolling before Yveltal. Only in seeing his pokémon's failed attempt at ambushing the hybrid did fear finally make itself known.
"M-Move…! I SAID MOVE!" Despite the urgency in his voice, the four pokémon could only remain still.
"You're done." It was curt, but final. No response retorted could disprove that. All the man could helplessly do was watch as Relon blurred from his spot. One moment he was there. The next, he bore a coated fist of power near his face. "Oblivion Fist!"
Off Corviknight he fell crashing against the canopy to hit the ground. Somehow, through it all, he survived. Blinking as that realization settled, the man quickly got to his feet as Relon landed.
"Quite the punch! But you failed! Hahaha… HAHAHAHAHAHA!"
"No, I didn't," Relon simply answered, which caused the hysterical mad man to shut up.
All he could do was watch as one by one, his pokémon fell to the umbreon and the humanoid absol until only Charizard remained. With a roar of defiance, it flew down for a barrier to erupt. In unison, both careened past the billowing flames to strike. Up and down it fell as a dark light resonated to it once again a normal Charizard
"Huh?" It was all he could sound as his cheek began to harden. "Impossible…!"
"You called me an angel. Angels do indeed help others. To those I care about, they can see me as their savior if they want, I'll simply keep doing what I must to protect those I care for." He explained as Yveltal's power finally subsided. "But to those that wish to harm my friends, those dear to me… Well, I'll simply use this power to ruin any and all plans of such a thing happening. The Angel of Ruination. That's what you can call me."
No response ever came as Relon only looked at a statue. Sensing two figures approach, he didn't need to know who it was. Instinctively, he looked to Eve still as an umbreon. To still retain Yveltal's power in reserve, he could only mentally chuckle. A glance to his other side, he saw Absol in her human form.
Her hair, a mix of denim and white, split with the dark blue ending just at her chin and the white side containing a larger portion as it fell a little past the chin while covering her other eye. With an oval marking on her forehead, barely visible thanks to said hair, the white tuft of fur, the protruding crooked horn out her head, and the small tail having stabbed through her dress, he could on mentally note how beautiful she looked.
"Finally," a tired breath exuded form the psychic as she took his side.
"It's over, right?" Dawn asked, looking to him as Anabel quietly took Sabrina's side. One by one, more and more of the freed victims began to slowly surround the stoned man. No one knew how to genuinely react to such news. That alone was understandable.
"Yeah," Relon musters out to look at the rising dawn far off in the distance. "Seems we did it before you woke up," he offers for the girl to simply look in confusion before it clicks. Then the best smile he's seen yet graced her features.
"All thanks to you."
"Nah. It was a team effort. Everyone contributed. That includes you, Absol."
Wordlessly, Absol turned around as if about to walk away. Then…
WHACK!
She spun, decapitating the human statue with her bare heel as the rest of the once evil man crumbled into a pile of rocks. Everyone jumped at the sudden action.
"Good fucking riddance," she spat.
Blinking dumbfounded, he didn't know what to respond to the situation now.
"Now, how about we-" Finishing her step, her eyes rolled back as she fell.
"Absol?! Hey- Ugh…" The fatigue and stress had finally caught up. He realized it as soon as he lost his footing. If only he could do something as the world went black once more.
