Chapter One: Introductions

"Kainna, would you come with me to see Koenma? He has a new assignment for you." Kainna looked up from her book to the ogre in front of her. Her off-white bangs lifted from shadowing her face to show a kind; almost angelic look that would convince a normal human she was anything but a demon. Her charcoal lined teal eyes locked onto the ogre in front of her, a look of annoyance dispelled any kindness on her face as she rolled her eyes lazily before closing her book.

"Am I just a prisoner to be summoned then?" The ogre, known as Jorge, looked nervously at the demon in front of him as he waved off her words.

"I wouldn't say prisoner, more like monitored guest." Jorge tried to appease her, but it only made her sigh with further aggravation. Kainna unfolded her shapely legs from underneath her, the black knee-high tights she wore only emphasised them against the short thigh-high kimono she wore. She stood up without a word, smoothing down the short skirt of the kimono before looking at Jorge in front of her.

"Lead the way." Jorge walked off quickly hoping that Koenma had a good mission for the demoness behind him. He found the more bored she got, the less pleasant she was.

"Koenma, I have Kainna here for you." Koenma looked up quickly from his desk, some of the papers ruffled in front of him as he held a stamp in his other hand. His small baby form always made Kainna laugh internally from the image, she didn't know why a baby working seemed just hilarious to her, but it lightened her mood.

"Kainna! I've heard you have grown bored of healing the other investigators in the sick bay and request a more interesting assignment." Koenma was straight to the point as he started stamping away at the pile of papers in front of him. Kainna grinned for the first time that day, her smile brightening up her face and distracting Koenma from stamping as he stared at the demoness in front of him. Kainna's smile was breath taking and often distracted whomever she was talking to in the moment. Kainna never noticed, as she only smiled that way whenever she was excited, and if she was excited then she usually wasn't paying attention.

"Yes Sir, I would love something that would get me back into the action. Preferably something that would allow my sai daggers and bow to be given back to me." Kainna's smile switched to a sly grin in hopes of seeing her daggers again, to feel the weight of them in her hands, Koenma snapped out his daze and became professional yet again. He stacked his papers together on his desk before answering her.

"Now Kainna, I don't want you expecting more here. There will be no change in your designated role as healer." Kainna's smile completely disappeared now and she crossed her arms over her chest in disappointment. "But... the assignment is in the human realm." Kainna's eyes, which were staring hard at the wall behind Koenma, now looked back at him with interest.

"Oh? Well now you have my undivided attention." Koenma took that as a sign to continue.

"You will be placed on a team with a spirit detective; Yusuke Urameshi. He is currently looking for a wanted demon named Rando who we believe is competing secretly to become Genkai's successor. Yusuke is already in the competition, but we suspect Rando might be harder to bring in than we expected." Koenma looked worriedly in the distance for a moment before clearing his throat and getting back to the conversation.

"As it stands, we would like to send a healer to aid in case things take a turn for the worse." Kainna was more intrigued now, her powers of healing were one of her biggest assets as she had enough yoki to heal not only herself but a full squad of five men. So, for Koenma to want her as a healer to a team in the human realm meant that this team was important; this team couldn't die.

"And if you behave..." Kainna threw in a sly grin here just to add to Koenma's implication of her being trouble. It's not like she looked for it... "I will add you onto the team as a permeant member, not just a healer. Although I would still appreciate it if you would keep your team members from dying as well." Kainna eyes brightened and her smile from before returned.

"So, I wouldn't have to spend all my time here? I could travel?"

"As long as you stay within a certain area of the team and aid them when needed, yes you would not have to spend all your time here." Kainna didn't need any time to think about it, being trapped in this realm was eating away at her patience.

"I'm in. When do I leave?" Koenma eyed her suspiciously for a moment, debating if he made the right decision or not. Well, it was too late to take it back.

"As soon as Botan arrives you can travel with her to human realm and then to Genkai's. Botan is a part of Team Urameshi as well." Kainna had met Botan through passing a couple of times. She liked the blue hair reaper the most out of everyone here, she had a sense of humour that matched her own mischievous nature.

"And Botan is here!" Said reaper exclaimed excitedly as she walked through Koenma's doorway, dressed in a different outfit than her usual kimono. A more human outfit, a pair of jeans and an orange crop top. Kainna thought she looked nice but doubted any of her clothing had special armour like hers did. She would stick to her kimono, even if she were to be around humans.

"Kainna! Pleasure to have you join our little rag-tag team. Having you as a healer will definitely be an asset, and having another girl will keep me from going crazy, which is another asset in itself." Botan spoke in her usually cheerful voice. Kainna thanked her, unused to all this praise.

"Well, you two better get going, they are already about to start the semi-finals." Koenma instructed. Kainna spoke up as Botan grabbed her arm to lead her away.

"What about my weapons?"

"Once you become a permeant member, I will have Botan personally deliver them. Until then, stay out of trouble." Kainna huffed in annoyance.

The ride to the human realm was exhilarating. Being on that tiny broom with Botan while she flew through the sky was quite the ride. Botan was obviously an expert as she zig-zagged through the air at an alarmingly fast pace. Kainna liked the adrenaline, it prepared her for the mission ahead.

They landed on top of a hill with a temple not far behind. Kainna hopped off the broom easily, the sleeves of her kimono gliding behind her in an ethereal way. Botan disembarked and set her broom away as they started the walk to the temple.

"So, are we welcomed here? Or are we sneaking in?" Kainna asked, noticing how Botan seemed to walk without worry of being seen.

"We wouldn't be attacked if we were spotted, if that's what you mean. But sneaking up on friends is always fun..." Kainna grinned, Botan was just as mischievous as herself. So, while Kainna did not blend into the shadows per say, she hid away any trace of her aura and stepped lighter, almost soundless on the grass before her.

They made it to the temple without any trouble. Botan summoned her broom again and sat atop a branch from one of the trees nearby. Kainna focused some of her spirit energy in her feet before gracefully jumping on a branch next to Botan.

"Just one moment Kainna, I'm going to lure Yusuke here telepathically." Botan closed her eyes for a few minutes while Kainna simply watched the nature around them. The human realm sure was beautiful, even the temperature was perfect. A light breeze washed over them, bringing the scent of flowers and tree pollen. Kainna had missed the human realm.

"He should be here soon." Botan spoke to Kainna; a few moments later a boy with slicked back black hair and a strong build emerged from the temple and ran towards them.

"Botan?" Yusuke called, Botan jumped down easily from the branch and Kainna followed.

"Botan? Why are you here?" The boy looked at her with confusion before spotting the demoness besides her. "Who's your friend?" Botan glanced over at Kainna as if just remembering that they never met before speaking with excitement.

"Oh, Yusuke excuse me. This is Kainna, a most incredible healer that Koenma assigned to lend a hand on the mission." Yusuke huffed and glared at the white-haired demoness in front of him.

"So Koenma doesn't think I can do this competition by myself?" He questioned her, wondering how exactly this short girl could heal him. He couldn't even sense any spiritual power from her.

"Don't worry Yusuke, Koenma just wants to make sure his favourite spirit detective lives through whatever may happen. I don't intend to sway the competition, what fun would that be? I won't be healing you until after the fight." Kainna clarified her role in this. She didn't care what Koenma wanted, despite being a demon she had an honour code with fights. Yusuke grinned at the demon's words.

"Welcome to the team." Kainna smirked, glad to be on a team with someone that had her same fighting values. She started to ask him what type of fighter he was when a distant voice interrupted them.

"Urameshi! You can't chicken out on me..." Another human boy called as he ran up to the group. Kainna noticed that although this human was taller, he seemed to be around the same age range as Yusuke. "Oh, you're just talking to these hot girls..." Kainna wondered what he meant, her temperature was actually colder than most humans so she wouldn't classify herself as 'hot' considering his body temperature was warmer than hers.

"He means attractive, Kainna." Botan whispered with a giggle at the girls confused expression. Kainna's eyes widened with realisation, this human was attracted to her? Weird.

"Keiko is supposed to be your girlfriend!" The red head started to choke Yusuke in a headlock and Kainna wondered if this was the next battle or if she should defend her teammate.

"Kuwabara this is Botan and my new friend Kainna." Kuwabara looked down at Kainna and blushed at her outfit. The short girl was wearing an even shorter kimono with black knee-highs. She had a red obi that tied to a bow on the side of her right hip, it brought together her kimono but still allowed it to hang loosely around her bare shoulders. She wore red tank top underneath that was a sharp contrast against her black kimono. Kuwabara never saw a woman dress like this before. Being in a high school with a strict dress code, he had never seen a woman dress so scandalously. Kainna noticed his look, besides the shortness of her skirt, she didn't see what was wrong with how she dressed. The one asset she had was her ass and the skirt of her kimono easily covered that area. Besides, there were many other demonesses out there that were hardly covered up at all. Maybe he was just a prude.

"Nice to meet you Kuwabara, actually I've seen you a couple of times and have been impressed by your actions." Botan distracted Kuwabara from his staring as she spoke by summoning her broom into her hand and sitting atop it.

"She's floating in the air! Is she a witch?" Kainna laughed in her kimono sleeve at Kuwabara's scared expression. Witches were much less terrifying than herself. Yusuke went on to explain who/what Botan was while Kainna and Botan watched with amusement.

"You had a bad feeling about one of those guys in there, right? Well, there are these things called demons and one of them in there is this guy called Rando and I have to keep him from winning and becoming Genkai's successor."

"Well, the important thing is you aren't cheating on Keiko. Which means..." Kuwabara strolled up to Botan, his face was a mixture off being suave and nervous. Kainna doubted she would need to defend the reaper with whatever he had planned. "Please go on a date with me." Kainna couldn't hold back her laughter, Botan looked seriously scared. And it only got worse when Kainna noticed Genkai standing behind Kuwabara with a lit cigarette. She flicked it easily onto his shoulder, still lit. Within seconds Kuwabara was screaming. So much for having high spiritual awareness.

"Do you two want to get disqualified?" Genkai asked the boys who quickly, along with Botan, dashed inside the temple. Kainna instead approached Genkai. Genkai watched the demoness cautiously, unsure if she was part of Koenma's team or not.

"Genkai, it's a pleasure to meet you." Kainna bowed low in respect. "I am Kainna, demon of the moon." Genkai's eyes widened with recognition but stayed silent otherwise. "I'm sorry for intruding, but Koenma sent me to watch over Yusuke. I will not interfere with the competition, but I will stop his death if need be." Kainna spoke with respect. Every demon has heard tales of Genkai's power and while Kainna thought a fight would be entertaining, she was not going to be disrespectful towards someone one their own property. Besides, Koenma said to stay out of trouble.

"So Koenma sent one of his spirit detectives. It seems this old lady can still attract some celebrities." Genkai spoke with amusement, her caution disappearing after hearing the demon speak. "Demon of the moon, huh?" Genkai looked the demoness up and down, she did not sense any of her yoki. "Are you hiding your energy then?" Kainna grinned and allowed some of her yoki to be released for a moment. Genkai felt it rocket towards her forcefully, cutting through the air and making wind...until it stopped suddenly. Kainna dispelled it, hiding her aura to almost nothing within seconds. Genkai smirked.

"Finally, another woman fighter that might actually be worthy of calling so." Kainna noticed she referred to her as fighter not demon, a strange sense of pride engulfed her for just a moment before returning to respect.

"I would like to think so, however; I believe you are still the master here." Kainna bowed respectfully again before moving to the door to follow the others.

"Hey, what was that burst of energy?!" Kuwabara poked his head out from the doors. Kainna smirked, noticing Yusuke and Botan looking as well.

"Just paying my respects." Kainna answered sweetly. Kuwabara's eyes widen comically as he quickly took a couple of steps back from her in fear.

"That was you!?" At Kainna's nod he continued. "Are you like Botan?"

"No," Kainna leaned forward as if telling a secret. Kuwabara leaned in curiously. "I'm a demon." Kainna whispered. Kuwabara jumped in fear and pointed a finger towards her accusingly.

"I thought we were hunting demons!" Kainna laughed at his accusation. Well, he wasn't wrong. It was unusual for demons to pair up with humans.

"Not her Kuwabara, she's on our side! She's a healer!" Yusuke yelled in aggravation. Kuwabara lowered his arm.

"She doesn't look like a healer." Kuwabara had a red tinge on his cheeks as he mentioned the demoness's outfit.

"Thats because she's also a fighter." Genkai stated as she walked past the small group. "Now, if everyone is done interrupting, we best get back to the competition."
