Hi all,
Here's the next chapter. There is some excitement at the ruins, and Lucas gets another team member.
Chapter 56
Lucas tugged at the collar of his white lab coat, feeling like an impostor among the bustling crowd of researchers scurrying about the ruins. He glanced at Sabrina, who seemed equally uncomfortable in her borrowed attire. Professor Sycamore, on the other hand, appeared right at home, his eyes filled with excitement as he surveyed the ancient stone structures around them.
"Fascinating, isn't it?" Sycamore said, gesturing wildly at the weathered walls. "These ruins hold secrets that could revolutionise our understanding of Pokemon history!"
Lucas nodded absently, his gaze drawn to Meowth, who was slinking away from the others. He knew the crafty feline was off to hunt for hidden items. Before he disappeared around a corner, he saw Meowth activate his Shadow Veil ability. Thankfully, there weren't too many Pokemon around, so the chances of being caught were slim.
Still, part of him wanted to call Meowth back because he knew how important the ruins were to the Kalos government, as evidenced by the security personnel protecting them. They were members of KAST, the Kalos Archaeological Security Team that Siebold was training, but the Elite Four member wasn't among them. If Meowth pissed one of them off, then there might be some trouble.
As they ventured deeper into the ruins, Lucas couldn't help but marvel at the sheer number of scientists present. They were everywhere, carefully brushing dust from artefacts, or huddled in small groups, animatedly discussing their findings. It felt like walking through a bizarre, archaeology-themed amusement park.
"I feel like I'm in a film," Sabrina whispered to him, echoing his thoughts. "I'm half expecting a mummy to jump out at any moment."
Lucas chuckled. "They are still studying the ruins after all this time. I wonder if there is anything left to find."
"They aren't going to stop looking if there is a chance of finding more Mega Stones," Sabrina said, looking in the direction Meowth had disappeared. "Or other treasures."
Lucas was about to reply when Professor Sycamore's excited voice cut through the air. "Oh my! You must see this!"
They hurried after the professor, entering a vast chamber. The walls were covered in murals, their colours still vibrant despite the passage of time. One particular image caught his attention. There, depicted in stunning detail, was Zygarde, locked in fierce combat with two other Pokemon he recognised as Xerneas and Yveltal.
"Extraordinary, isn't it?" Sycamore breathed. "What could have caused such a conflict?"
As Sycamore rambled on, Lucas' gaze was drawn to a seemingly blank section of wall, but his instincts told him there was more than met the eye. Without thinking, he pulled out his phone, pretending to take photos while actually accessing his map function.
His suspicions were confirmed when the map revealed a hidden chamber beyond the wall. Excitement bubbled up inside him, but he forced himself to remain calm. He couldn't just blurt out that he knew there was a secret room without raising suspicion.
"Professor," Lucas said. "I have a strange feeling about this wall. Do you think there could be something behind it?"
Sycamore turned to him, eyebrows raised. "Oh? What makes you say that?"
Lucas shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "Just a hunch, I guess. Something about the way the mural ends so abruptly here. It seems off."
The professor stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Interesting observation, Lucas. But how would we confirm such a theory?"
"We could look for a hidden mechanism," Sabrina suggested, catching on to Lucas' lead. "Ancient ruins often have secret passages, right?"
"Indeed they do," Sycamore said, his enthusiasm rekindled. "Excellent thinking, both of you. Let's examine this section more closely."
After several minutes of fruitless searching, Lucas' hand brushed against a slightly protruding stone. Acting on instinct, he pressed it, and a low rumbling filled the chamber. Slowly, a section of the wall slid away, revealing a dark passageway beyond.
"Incredible!" Sycamore shouted, drawing the attention of nearby researchers. "You've made a remarkable discovery, Lucas!"
As excited chatter filled the air, the group cautiously entered the hidden chamber, their way lit only by their torches. The air was thick with dust and the musty smell of long-undisturbed earth. Lucas activated his Aura Sight, and suddenly the darkness was alive with glowing symbols.
Images covered every surface, pulsating with a faint glow. As he studied them, he realised they were more than mere decorations. They were a map, and it took him a moment to realise it depicted the locations of Zygarde's scattered cells and cores.
"I don't see anything," Sycamore said. "Perhaps this chamber was looted long ago."
"Maybe we need more light," Lucas suggested, buying time as he committed the images to memory. "The walls might have faded inscriptions we can't see properly."
How could he only see them? Was this because of the skill he gained from Zygarde?
As the professor called for additional lighting equipment, Sabrina sidled up to Lucas. "You can see something, can't you?" she whispered.
Lucas nodded almost imperceptibly. "I'll tell you later."
Just then, Meowth came bounding into the chamber, looking incredibly pleased with himself. He held up a small, shiny object.
"What have you got there?" Lucas asked, grateful for the distraction.
As Meowth displayed his find, an ancient coin of some kind, Lucas' thoughts were occupied by what he had discovered. The images had given him a road map for reassembling Zygarde, but pursuing it would mean juggling it alongside his other responsibilities in his already hectic life. According to the map, the cells and cores were spread throughout every region. It could take him years to collect them all. At the very least, he would see more of the Pokemon world.
The chamber filled with more researchers who quickly set up some more lighting equipment. In one corner of the chamber, they discovered a large stone tablet, partially concealed by a crumbled wall. Lucas had been too distracted by the images to notice them before.
A low rumble reverberated throughout the chamber, startling Lucas. He exchanged anxious glances with the others. It was barely noticeable at first, just a vibration under their feet. But within seconds, the tremor intensified, causing dust and small debris to rain down from the ceiling.
"Everybody out!" Professor Sycamore shouted, his usual enthusiasm replaced by urgency. "Quickly now!"
The chamber erupted into chaos as researchers scrambled towards the exit. Lucas grabbed Sabrina's hand, pulling her towards the passage they'd entered through. Meowth leapt onto his shoulder, clinging tightly as the ground shook violently beneath them.
"Wait!" Sabrina cried, tugging Lucas to a halt. "The researchers!"
Lucas turned to see several researchers struggling with a large stone tablet, trying to manoeuvre it through the narrow passageway. Without hesitation, he rushed back to help, Sabrina right behind him.
As they lifted the heavy tablet, a particularly strong tremor rocked the ruins. The sound of cracking stone filled the air, and Lucas looked up to see a large fissure spreading across the ceiling.
"Move!" he yelled, adrenaline surging through his veins.
They barely made it through the passage before a deafening crash echoed behind them. A cloud of dust billowed out, enveloping them as they stumbled into the larger chamber.
Coughing and spluttering, Lucas helped lower the tablet to the ground before turning to check on Sabrina. She was covered in a fine layer of dust but appeared unharmed.
"Is everyone alright?" Professor Sycamore called out, his voice hoarse.
A chorus of affirmatives rang out as the dust began to settle. Lucas did a quick headcount, relieved to see that all the researchers had made it out safely.
"Where did that tremor come from?" one of the researchers asked, looking around nervously. "Are there going to be more of them?"
"I think we should leave for the time being," Professor Sycamore suggested. "These ruins might be unstable."
As Lucas and Sabrina were about to exit the main chamber, a group of uniformed security personnel came rushing in, their faces etched with urgency.
"Professor Sycamore!" the lead officer called out, slightly out of breath. "We have a situation. The ruins are under attack!"
Sycamore's eyes widened in disbelief. "Attack? By whom?"
"Team Flare, sir," the officer replied grimly. "They've surrounded the entire site. We can't evacuate from here; it's too unsafe."
A ripple of fear ran through the gathered researchers. Lucas felt Sabrina tense beside him, her hand instinctively moving towards her pokeballs.
"What do they want?" Lucas asked.
The security officer shook his head. "We're not sure, but they're demanding access to the ruins. They claim to have some sort of 'rightful claim' to whatever's inside."
Professor Sycamore's face hardened. "We can't let them get their hands on these artefacts. The historical significance alone—"
"We'll help," Sabrina interjected. She turned to Lucas. "We should go with security and help deal with Team Flare."
Lucas nodded. "Agreed. We can't just sit here and do nothing."
"Are you sure?" Sycamore asked. "It could be dangerous."
"Trust me, Professor," Lucas said with a wry smile. "I may not have the strongest team, but I have access to a Mega Evolution. My girlfriend here will be the real star of the show. She's a former gym leader."
The security officer looked relieved. "Any help would be appreciated. We're spread thin as it is."
"Right then," Sabrina said. "Where do you need us?"
As the officer began outlining their defensive strategy, Lucas couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement beneath his worry.
"Ready?" he asked Sabrina, grinning despite the gravity of the situation.
She returned his smile. "Always."
They followed the security team towards the ruins' entrance.
Why was Team Flare so interested in these ruins? Whatever the reason, one thing was clear: their peaceful research expedition had just turned into something far more dangerous. And as much as it worried him, Lucas couldn't deny the thrill of facing a real threat alongside Sabrina.
"Meowth," he said to his feline companion. "It looks like we're in for a fight."
"It has nothing to do with me," Meowth replied, yawning. "But if there is a chance to steal some loot from Team Flare, I wouldn't mind getting my paws dirty."
As Lucas and Sabrina emerged from the ruins, they were immediately assaulted by a cacophony of shouts, roars and explosions. The scene before them was one of utter chaos.
The once-peaceful archaeological site had been transformed into a frenzied battlefield. Dozens of Team Flare members, their crimson suits a stark contrast against the dusty landscape, were locked in combat with the site's security forces. Pokemon of all types clashed in the air and the ground, their attacks lighting up the sky and scarring the earth.
To their left, a Houndoom's Flamethrower collided with an Arcanine's Fire Blast, creating a massive explosion that sent both trainers diving for cover. On the right, a Crobat and a Mothim were engaged in an aerial dogfight, their wings stirring up miniature whirlwinds as they darted and weaved through the air.
Directly in front of them, a line of Magneton belonging to the security team were unleashing a barrage of Thunderbolts, creating a makeshift electric fence to hold back a wave of advancing Team Flare grunts. But for every grunt that fell back, two more seemed to take their place, their faces set with grim determination.
The air was thick with dust and the acrid smell of smoke. Stray attacks whizzed past, forcing Lucas and Sabrina to duck as they took in the scale of the battle. It was clear that the security forces, despite their valiant efforts, were outnumbered and slowly being pushed back towards the ruins.
Lucas and Sabrina exchanged a glance, a silent understanding passing between them. Without a word, they both reached for their pokeballs, ready to join the fray and turn the tide of this unexpected conflict.
He summoned Icarus and activated his Mega Bracelet. The Pidgeot transformed into his Mega form, which didn't go unnoticed. Several Team Flare grunts stopped in their tracks. Their jaws dropped in trepidation as they beheld the awe-inspiring sight of the Mega-evolved Pokemon.
Icarus shot into the sky. A level fifty-one Swellow rocketed towards him, directed by a Team Flare member on the ground.
Following Lucas' orders, Icarus didn't wait for the Swellow to strike first. He vanished in a blur of speed, his Quick Attack catching the Swellow off-guard. There was a sickening crack as Icarus's beak struck the Swellow's wing joint. The smaller bird shrieked in pain, its wing hanging at an unnatural angle.
But the Swellow wasn't out of the fight yet. It retaliated with a vicious peck to Icarus's eye. Blood trickled down Icarus's face as he reeled back, momentarily blinded.
Sensing weakness, the Swellow pressed its advantage, its talons raking across Icarus's breast. Feathers and blood flew as Icarus screeched in agony.
Fighting through the pain, Icarus summoned a powerful Gust. The windstorm caught the Swellow, slamming it against the ruins' stone walls. The impact was audible even over the din of battle, and the Swellow dropped several feet before regaining its balance.
Icarus followed up with Air Cutter, sending blades of wind slicing through the air. The Swellow, hampered by its injured wing, couldn't dodge completely. The razor-sharp wind opened deep gashes across its body.
Desperate now, the Swellow charged, aiming for Icarus' throat. But Icarus was ready. He used Double Team, creating multiple illusory copies of himself. The Swellow, confused, flew right through an illusion.
Seizing the moment, Icarus struck again with multiple Quick Attacks, each blow precise and brutal.
The Swellow's cries grew weaker with each hit. Blood and feathers rained down on the battlefield below as the two birds fought savagely in the sky.
Finally, with one last, powerful strike, Icarus sent the Swellow plummeting to the ground. It hit the earth with a dull thud, twitching weakly before going still.
Icarus, battered and bleeding, gave himself a moment to catch his breath. He landed on top of the ruins and used Roost, his wounds gradually healing as he restored some of his condition. But he knew he couldn't rest for long. More Pokemon from Team Flare were already on their way, ready for battle.
With a harsh cry, Icarus used Work Up. His body was bathed in energy as he prepared for the next fight.
Meanwhile, Sabrina was confronting a portly man with fiery red hair and strange goggles.
"Axel, let's go!" Sabrina called, releasing her Axel. The steel behemoth materialised with a resounding thud.
The man's lips curled into a sneer. "Ah, Sabrina from the Kanto region. My boss told me all about you."
He reached for a pokeball and summoned a sinister-looking squid-like Pokemon that emerged, its body undulating unnaturally as it hovered in the air. A Malamar.
"My name is Xerosic," the portly man continued. "Let me show—"
Without warning, Malamar's tentacles lashed out, pulsing with psychic energy in a vicious Psycho Cut. The attack sliced through the air with frightening speed, catching Axel off guard. The psychic blade struck true, leaving a deep, sparking gash across Axel's metallic body. The steel titan let out a low, pained groan.
Enraged by the sudden assault, Axel's eyes flashed with a cold, mechanical fury. Its front right leg began to glow with intense metallic energy as it prepared a devastating Meteor Mash. With surprising speed for its massive size, Axel launched forward, the powered-up limb aimed directly at Malamar's centre mass.
The squid-like Pokemon attempted to twist away, its body contorting unnaturally, but Axel's attack was too fast and powerful to evade completely. The Meteor Mash connected with a sickening crunch.
Malamar was sent hurtling backwards, its soft body offering little resistance as it crashed through a nearby stone pillar. The ancient structure crumbled under the force, showering the battlefield with debris.
Bits of tentacle and dark, viscous fluid splattered the ground as Malamar struggled to right itself. Its body was grotesquely misshapen from the blow, tentacles bent at unnatural angles and its usually smooth skin marred by deep bruises and cuts.
Despite its injuries, Malamar wasn't ready to concede defeat. Its eyes glowed an eerie, pulsating blue as it focused its psychic powers. The air around Axel seemed to warp and twist as Malamar unleashed a Topsy-Turvy attack. The psychic waves washed over the steel titan, and for a moment, nothing seemed to happen. Then, suddenly, Axel's movements became erratic. Its limbs twitched and jerked unnaturally as its abilities were temporarily reversed, leaving it disoriented and vulnerable.
Seizing the opportunity, Malamar launched forward with renewed vigour. Its tentacles became shrouded in dark, shadowy energy as it prepared a Night Slash attack. With a speed belying its injuries, Malamar closed the distance between them. Its powered-up tentacles raked across Axel's face, leaving deep, jagged furrows in the metal.
As Malamar pulled back from its attack, Axel's remaining eyes began to glow with an intense, almost blinding light. The air around it seemed to vibrate with psychic energy as it prepared to unleash a devastating Psychic attack.
The wave of energy erupted from Axel with explosive force. It struck Malamar head-on, lifting the Pokemon into the air. Malamar's body contorted in unnatural angles as the psychic energy overwhelmed its senses. A series of sickening pops echoed across the battlefield as Malamar's limbs were wrenched out of their sockets by the sheer force of the attack.
Driven by desperation and pain, Malamar's body suddenly began to change. Its muscles bulged and grew, swelling to unnatural proportions as it prepared a last-ditch Superpower attack. With a shriek of defiance, Malamar hurled itself at Axel, its mangled tentacles poised to strike.
Axel, still reeling from the earlier attacks but unwilling to back down, met the charge head-on. Its entire body became enveloped in psychic energy as it launched into a powerful Zen Headbutt. The two Pokemon collided in a brutal display of power and determination.
The clash of psychic energies created a blinding flash of light and a thunderous boom that shook the very ground. The shockwave sent both trainers stumbling backwards and shattered what remained of the nearby ruins. For a moment, the entire battlefield was obscured by a thick cloud of dust.
As the dust began to settle, both Pokemon were revealed, barely standing. Malamar's body was a horrific sight, a mess of twisted limbs and oozing wounds. Dark fluid dripped steadily from its mangled tentacles, forming small pools on the cracked earth beneath it. Axel's metal hide was now dented and scarred. Its remaining eyes flickered weakly, struggling to stay focused.
For a tense moment, they stared each other down, neither willing to be the first to fall. Then, with a weak, gurgling cry, Malamar's eyes rolled back in its head. It swayed unsteadily before finally collapsing to the ground with a wet thud.
A thunderous roar echoed across the sky. Sabrina and Xerosic, along with the remaining combatants, looked up to see that a new player had arrived on the field.
Siebold, the Elite Four member, was soaring towards them atop his massive Gyarados. Behind Siebold, a squadron of KAST members followed on their own flying Pokemon, creating an imposing aerial formation.
Siebold's voice boomed across the battlefield, amplified by some unseen device. "This is the Kalos Archaeological Security Team! Team Flare, you are surrounded. Surrender immediately or face the consequences!"
The sudden arrival of reinforcements sent a wave of panic through the Team Flare ranks and they began recalling their Pokemon.
"Retreat!" Xerosic bellowed to his subordinates. "Fall back to the rendezvous point!"
As KAST members began to descend upon the ruins, Team Flare grunts scattered in all directions. Some released flying Pokemon of their own, taking to the skies in a frantic attempt to escape.
Lucas approached Sabrina and stood beside her, watching Siebold pursue the fleeing Team Flare members.
"What excellent timing," Lucas said. "I think Moonshine is beginning to grow on me."
"Moon...?" Sabrina looked at him, stunned. "The joke's over, Lucas. It's not funny anymore. No more moon jokes."
Lucas pouted.
She moved forward and fed Axel some potions, and his injuries began to heal slowly. "That was a tough battle. Take a good rest, and I will treat you to something good tonight."
"Gross!"
In the aftermath of Team Flare's attack on the ruins, the archaeological site had come to resemble a battlefield more than a place of scientific discovery. The excavation area was now marred by scorch marks, craters and debris from the intense Pokemon battles that had taken place.
KAST members, led by Siebold, worked efficiently to secure the area. They apprehended the Team Flare grunts who hadn't managed to escape, whilst others began the process of cataloguing damaged artefacts and assessing the overall impact on the site.
Lucas and Sabrina, exhausted from the battle, found themselves being debriefed by Siebold. Their accounts of the fight, particularly the confrontation with Xerosic, were deemed crucial to understanding Team Flare's motives. Xerosic was their top scientist, so he must have come here for a reason.
While the site had suffered, the swift response from Lucas, Sabrina and the KAST team had prevented Team Flare from achieving their unknown objectives. However, questions lingered about what exactly the criminal organisation had been after, and what secrets the ruins might still be hiding.
Lucas and Sabrina headed back to Couriway Town. He had planned to show Sabrina his secret base after visiting the ruins but decided it could wait until tomorrow. As they ate lunch, they started hearing rumours from the locals about some drawings that had appeared in the cave on the lake. Lucas, who is an artist himself, was immediately interested in investigating.
After lunch, Lucas and Sabrina went to the lake's edge, where they noticed a small cave entrance on the far side.
"So, that's where the locals saw those drawings?" Lucas asked, shielding his eyes from the sun's glare.
Sabrina nodded. "They appeared overnight. No one has cared enough to investigate it further."
Lucas glanced around, spotting an old fisherman tending to his boat nearby.
"Excuse me, sir," he called out, approaching the man. "Would it be possible to borrow your boat for a short while? We'd like to check out that cave over there."
The old man eyed them sceptically before breaking into a toothless grin. "Ah, you are looking into those drawings, eh? Sure, you can take old Bessie here. Just bring her back in one piece, you hear?"
Grateful, Lucas and Sabrina climbed into 'Bessie', a weathered but sturdy rowboat. They set off across the lake, the gentle lapping of water against the boat mingling with the distant calls of water Pokemon.
As they neared the cave, they could make out faint, colourful markings around the entrance. Pulling the boat onto a small, rocky shore, they entered the cave, the coolness a stark contrast to the warm day outside.
The narrow passageway opened into a small cave. The walls were covered in crude but vibrant paintings of stick figures, abstract shapes and what appeared to be attempts at drawing Pokemon.
"These don't look half bad," Sabrina said.
A shuffling sound from deeper in the cave caught their attention. Lucas raised his hand to shield his eyes from the sunlight streaming in, illuminating a small, blue figure hunched over a pile of paint brushes.
"Is that a Squirtle?" Sabrina asked.
The Squirtle turned, startled by their presence. Instead of fleeing or attacking, it tilted its head curiously, a paintbrush clutched in its tiny hand.
Lucas chuckled, crouching down to the Squirtle's level. "Well, hello there, little artist. Are these your masterpieces?"
The Squirtle nodded, gesturing to the walls with pride.
"You know," Lucas said. "I think your art shows promise, but perhaps you could use some pointers. How about a quick lesson?"
"Squirtle!" It handed him the paintbrush.
Lucas spent the next hour teaching an eager Squirtle about colour theory and brush techniques. He was surprised by how focused Squirtle was and how quickly he improved. Squirtle had talent, but he needed guidance and better tools. Lucas resolved to bring some supplies back later to give to the Squirtle. As a fellow artist, he had to show his support.
As they emerged from the cave, Sabrina couldn't help but shake her head.
"Only you, Lucas," she said, "could turn a cave investigation into an impromptu art class for a Pokemon."
Lucas shrugged. "I had fun."
As they prepared to leave, the Squirtle appeared at the cave's entrance. It held up a paintbrush, waving it enthusiastically at Lucas.
"Squirtle! Squirt squirt!" it called out.
Lucas paused, turning back to the small Pokemon. "What's that, little guy? You want to come with us?"
The Squirtle nodded vigorously, gesturing to Lucas and then back to itself, mimicking painting motions.
Sabrina raised an eyebrow. "I think it wants to learn more from you, Lucas. It seems your artistic prowess has made quite an impression."
Lucas crouched down, meeting the Squirtle's eager gaze. "Is that true? You want to come along and learn more about art?"
"Squirtle!" it exclaimed, nodding so hard its shell rattled.
"Well, who am I to deny such enthusiasm for the arts? Welcome to the team. You know what, I have the perfect name for you. I'm going to call you Raphael. He's a really famous painter."
"Squirt!" Squirtle waved his brush around.
"And a really famous turtle," Lucas added with a grin. He pulled out a pokeball from his inventory and pressed it to Raphael, capturing him without any effort.
Summoning him again, Lucas took a moment to examine Raphael's parameters.

Now that he had captured Raphael, he had a complete team of six Pokemon, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. A good overall balance. When he returned to Kanto, he would get busy training his team and bringing them up to the point where he felt he could truly protect himself. He couldn't always count on Icarus and his Mega Evolution.
So, what do you think? In the next chapter, Lucas and Sabrina travel to Lumiose City.
