The Codex Caper

V.I.L.E. Island

The faculty were watching recordings of their students and kept finding their eyes drawn to Black Sheep.

"You're going to teach her right?" Coach Brunt asked.

"No." Shadowsan said.

"Why not?" Countess Cleo asked.

"She is unruly and impulsive."

"And top of her class." Maelstrom said. "Especially stealth and combat. She'd be a perfect candidate for your 'special class'."

"We do need more specialized agents." Dr. Bellum said. "Counting you we only have two."

Shadowsan kept his stoic face but knew he was outvoted.

Black Sheep finished her origami cranes before the rest of her classmates and even made an origami dragon while waiting. Black Sheep was a fit girl of 18 with chin-length and slightly curly auburn colored hair, rakuda brown skin, and blue grey eyes.

Even though she was two years younger than her classmates she was top of all 5 V.I.L.E. classes. So, Shadowsan decided to teach her…her and Sheena.

Sheena is a physically fit, and athletic female of 22 years old. Her hair is platinum blonde. She has a small beauty mark under the right side of her mouth and baby blue eyes.

"Black Sheep, Sheena," Shadowsan said, "come to my classroom after dinner tonight. I have something important to speak to you about."

Black Sheep waited in Shadowsan's classroom with Sheena a.k.a. Tigress who glared at her. The platinum blonde never hid her dislike for Black Sheep. She just couldn't accept that Black Sheep was better than her.

Why does Shadowsan want to see us? Black Sheep thought worriedly. He didn't find out about the phone did he?

Then Shadowsan entered carrying two small boxes and sat across from them. "Black Sheep, Sheena," he began, "you know about the 5 classes V.I.L.E. academy teaches but there is a sixth class."

A sixth class? Black Sheep thought.

"I am the only faculty member capable of teaching this class. Only the most gifted of students are offered this chance. Most years there are no students. This year, only you two." He placed the boxes in front of them.

Black Sheep opened hers cautiously…wrist blades?

They fastened the blades to their wrists and faced Shadowsan.

"I will teach you the techniques of one of V.I.L.E.'s greatest enemies. The Brotherhood of Assassins."

For the rest of the year Black Sheep and Tigress went through a brutal training regimen that pushed them to the limit physically and mentally. How to free run, hide in plain sight, how to kill without being noticed and disappear. Both were particularly gifted at hiding in plain sight. Tigress was more ruthless but Black Sheep was the better fighter. She mastered all 6 assassination methods and their variations, Tigress only mastered 4.

Shadowsan never said it but he was impressed. Even he never mastered all 6 and there was something else, Black Sheep saw everything…like an eagle.

Stealth 101

Final Exam…

Black Sheep slipped her hands into pocket after pocket, not finding the dollar.

This is getting old. Black Sheep thought. She took a deep breath and started using all her senses at once. Suddenly everything around her turned gray and Shadowsan turned blue. She looked for a small gold rectangle but didn't see it.

What the hell? I've used this to pickpocket specific items before…is that coat empty!? Black Sheep picked every pocket, but no dollar, she failed.

Two years later…

"So, nothing?" Carmen asked. She had changed a little since fleeing Vile Island. At 20 years old she was taller, filled out but still lithe, and her hair was now long and wild.

"Sorry Red," Played said, "if this Assassin Brotherhood and Templar Order exist, they've kept that fact very well hidden."

"It's been a year. You think they would have made contact." She said looking at her own wrist blades. Shadowsan had gifted her and Tigress dual blades shortly before graduation. "What about the codex?"

Aside from the capers on the V.I.L.E. hard drive she had also been searching for the pages of Altaïr's codex. She had also started to teach Zack and Ivy. She was sure Zack could be better if he applied himself, but Ivy had talent.

"Actually I've been looking into the names Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze and I found something."

"I'm listening."

"I've learned that several pages are on display in public museums around the world. One is in Florence's National Central Library. I've already booked a flight."

"Guys, we're going to Florence."

"Italy? Pizza here I come!" Zack said enthusiastically.

"So what are we stealing?" Ivy asked.

"A page."

Undisclosed location…

"So what's the verdict?" Player asked.

"It's written in Arabic." Carmen said with a grin. "There are two pages. One is a schematic that describes how to hollow my blade to insert poison. According to another page Altaïr was interested in some artifact called آبل عدن."

"Abil Eadn?"

"It means, 'The Apple of Eden'. I remember Shadowsan mentioning Pieces of Eden. These are really from Altaïr's codex!"

"Do we know how many pages there are total?"

"I think Shadowsan said there were 30. He has at least 1 page and we now have 2."

"Going kinda slow."

"Shadowsan said it took Ezio 20 years to find them all." Carmen said. Carmen pulled up google and typed in 'Apple of Eden'.

Paris, France

Interpol French branch

"Inspector Chase Devineaux." The director addressed him.

He was a fair skinned man with brown hair and a 5 o'clock shadow. He was dressed in a brown suit jacket with a striped brown/red tie and a plain white shirt underneath.

"We're assigning you a new case. You are to track down and apprehend a master thief known as Carmen Sandiego."

"Yes sir."

"Also, we will be assigning you a partner."

A slender Chinese-British woman in her mid-20s approached. She had pixie cut navy blue hair with a blue shine and fair skin with freckles on her cheeks and nose bridge with darkly rimmed round glasses and dressed professionally.

"Meet Ms. Julia Argent."

Later that night…

Julia read and reread the file Interpol had given her on Carmen Sandiego. As she read something seemed very familiar about her MO. Especially how she eliminated guards. I wonder… Julia thought and her left wrist twitched slightly.
