Chapter 37
The moment they rushed toward Vernon, Byakuya's men spotted them.
"Hey! Stop right there!" one of the guards yelled.
"Well, that's our cue to run," Kagome muttered.
Chaos erupted. Barb hit a button on her hacked phone, triggering cell doors to randomly unlock, sending prisoners into a frenzy. Guards scrambled to control the madness, giving them a chance to slip through the crowd.
Inuyasha yanked Vernon toward them. "Move. Now."
"What the hell is happening?" Vernon barked. "Why is Byakuya here?!"
"To kill you, genius!" Kagome snapped. "You're a loose end!"
Byakuya's voice rang out behind them. "Vernon, Vernon, Vernon," he drawled. "Running just makes me want to hunt you more."
Inuyasha turned, eyes flashing red, and growled lowly.
"Oh, hell," Kagome muttered. "He's losing it."
They broke into a sprint toward the exit, but Byakuya's men cut them off in the prison yard.
Byakuya smiled. "Going somewhere?"
Inuyasha stepped in front of Kagome protectively, claws forming at his fingertips. "Touch her, and I'll rip you apart."
Byakuya chuckled. "Oh, I don't need to touch her. But I do wonder... does she even know who she really is?"
Kagome froze. "What the hell does that mean?"
Byakuya smirked. "Oh, sweetheart. Your family's not as dead as you think."
Before Kagome could process that and things could spiral further, a loud explosion rocked the prison walls, sending debris flying. A black SUV screeched up outside the yard, doors flinging open.
Inuyasha grabbed her, pulling her against his chest. "Time to go. Now."
"Well, well, well," a familiar voice drawled from the driver's seat. "Didn't I say you'd owe me a favor, sweetheart?"
Kagome whipped her head around. Naraku Onigumo.
"Oh, for fuck's sake," Inuyasah snarled.
"Get in, unless you want to find out just how pissed Byakuya is today," Naraku called out, grinning like this was all just a fun little game.
Inuyasha clearly wanted to murder Naraku where he stood, but with Byakuya's men already regrouping, they had no choice.
"MOVE!" Barb shouted, shoving Vernon toward the SUV.
They piled into the car, and Naraku floored it, tearing through the gates as bullets whizzed past.
"So," Naraku said casually as he swerved onto the highway, Byakuya's men in full pursuit behind them. "How's your day been, sweetheart?"
Kagome rolled her eyes choosing peace because a dog demon was stewing right beside her ready to kill.
Kagome crossed her arms. "Bubba's dead, Vernon almost got assassinated, I've got a mob boss looking to kill me, and now I owe you a favor. You know normal stuff! How do you think?"
Naraku laughed. "See? That's why I like you. Always keeping things interesting."
Inuyasha growled. "Drive faster before I throw you out of your own car."
