Cora nervously sat on the exam table in an exam room at Saint Benjamin's hospital. Jamie and Eddie had pushed two chairs next to each other she that they could both be next to each other.
"What if its bad news mama? What if its worse? What if its spread everywhere in my body? Then I'm gone…"
Eddie looked Cora in the eye with confidence.
"Hey. Look at me sweet girl. Whatever the news, your dad and I, your brothers and your sisters, your aunt Erin and aunt Linda, Uncle Danny, grampy, we're all there for you…"
Cora seemed to sadden.
"But we're missing one person mama… Poppy…"
Jamie reached over and squeezed Cora's hand.
"Hey. Hey. Ladybug. Poppy is always here with us. He's up in heaven watching over you right now. But he's also here in your heart. He's always here with you and with us. He is so proud of you for keeping strong and never giving up."
Cora swiped at her eyes and Eddie chimed in.
"Your dad's right honey. He's look down on your right now and smiling. He's proud of you for keeping strong and never giving up. We're all proud of you."
Again, Cora swiped at her eyes and gave a watery smile.
"Thanks mama, daddy."
Taking a breath Cora tried not to stiffen as her Oncologist, Doctor Lewiston entered the exam room.
"Hi Cora. Jamie. Eddie. How are you feeling today, Cora?"
Cora gave Doctor Lewiston an apprehensive look and spoke.
"Nervous. Just tell me, is it bad? I want to know."
Doctor Lewiston gave Cora a small smile and then went over to the sink to wash her hands.
"I'll get to that in just a minute. I want to start off with listening to your heart and lungs. Chemo can be very hard on the body."
Cora tried to relax, but it was difficult without knowing what was going on. Doctor Lewiston approached Cora and gave a quiet smile.
"Alright Cora, I'm just going to take a quick listen to your heart."
Staying quiet, Cora looked around the room and saw posters up on the wall. They were all about positivity. She had to stay positive. She'd gotten this far. Turning her attention back to Doctor Lewiston, she listened to her speak once more.
"Ok, now I'm going to listen to your lungs. Deep breath for me. There you go. Another. Good. Well, your heart and lungs sound good. Now are you ready to hear some good news?"
Cora seemed to have been blocking out everything Doctor Lewiston was saying, until this very moment.
"Did you say good news?"
Doctor Lewiston nodded and clicked on another page of Cora's very thick medical chart on the computer in front of her.
"Yes. I'm happy to say that the last round of chemo you had three weeks ago was absolutely your last. Taking a look at your latest scan here, you are completely cancer free."
Cora burst into tears, not sure what to say. There were so many emotions she was feeling right now. She looked to Jamie.
"These aren't sad tears daddy. These are happy ones. It means I get to live. I was afraid it was going to be bad news."
Doctor Lewiston nodded in understanding.
"I assure you; everything is normal. All your tests came back 100% clear. There are no more cancer cells in your body. Now no offense, but I don't want to see you on this floor again."
Cora let out a genuine laugh.
"Believe me, I don't want to be on this floor again either. Thank you so much for everything you've done for me, and for my family. I couldn't have gotten through this if it weren't for my family and you for always being positive with me."
Doctor Lewiston stuck her hand out and shook hands with Cora.
"It's my pleasure. Now you dad here tells me its almost your sweet 16. I hope its the best one ever. Good luck."
Jamie and Eddie were next in shaking hands with Doctor Lewiston. Everything was turning out right again. Hopefully they were over major hurdles.
