A Fighter to the End
Chapter 5 - Welcome to Jurassic World
"Ah my neck!" Aithne groaned, picking herself up after she was sent flying head first into the front passenger seat on impact, holding her neck.
She slowly crawled around to sit up, something falls from the seat, she looks down to see the radio complete smashed to bits, hearing the others moaning in pain too.
"Is everyone okay?" Daruis asked.
"Is everyone-?" Yasmina scoffed, slamming her hand on the stirring wheel.
Yasmina gets out of the van, slamming the door behind her so hard the van swayed.
"Yaz, wait!" Sammy calls out, she too hurries out the van leaving it open. "Wait! Yasmina!"
Aithne gets out too, holding her already bruised side, grunting, the others soon scramble out the van, groaning in pain, and all wondering how the hell now of them have broken any bones since the tower. Aithne drags herself the car bonnet, it was half open from the crash and black smoke was coming out of it, so it was easy to see the damage.
"Yeah that's is now undriveable," Aithne muttered.
"We're not okay!" Yasmina yelled.
Aithne looks up, Sammy had caught up to Yasmina, with a sigh she walks over to them as did the others.
"Yaz-"
"We're in the middle of a jungle with monster dinosaur out there, and you…You…"
"Destroyed our only way to get help and lied about it!" Brooklynn finished Yasmina's sentences. "I told you guys!"
"So you did take Brooklynn's phone?" Darius asked in disbelief. "Why? What were you doing?"
"Probably trying to erase my video of her taking those samples from the Sinoceratops," Brooklynn answered. "And you knew about the Indominus Rex because you were snooping around Doctor Wu's office when I ran into you. I knew it!"
Aithne did not even had the energy to tell Brooklynn to stop saying she was right and has to gloat about it.
"I didn't mean to destroy the phone," Sammy replied quickly. "I fell on it when the zipline came down and-"
"But you did steal it?" Ben cut in. "You had it that whole time and didn't tell us?"
"Hold up, what were you doing in Doctor Wu's office Brooklynn?" Darius asked.
"I can give you three guesses," Aithne muttered.
"I.. it doesn't matter," Brooklynn stumbled. "I didn't break our only way to call for help and then lie about it! this is not my fault! This is her fault!"
"I'm here to spy!" Sammy blurted out.
Aithne eyes widen, as did the everyone else, that was not what she was expecting to hear.
"For a company called Mantah Corp," Sammy admitted.
"The hell is that?" Aithne asks.
"They're a bioengineering company," Darius explains. Big rivals with Masrani. They tried to make dinosaurs too, but Wu beat to it."
"You doomed us all for some lousy company?" Ben exclaimed.
"Our ranch was in trouble," Sammy starts explaining. "So my folks had to borrow a lot of money from some shady people. We didn't know they were fronting for Mantah Corp, they said we'd lose everything unless I spied for them, use the behind-the-scenes access I'd get at camp to gather info from Wu's lab, and DNA from dinos, and whatever else they needed."
Sammy started to look more upset as she spoke.
"But then Brooklynn caught on and I got scared, and then, everything went wrong."
She turns to Yasmina who is not looking too pleased.
"This is the last thing I wanted to happen."
"Oh, to be next to a broken van on killer dinosaur island? Hey me too! What are the odds? Yasmina replied sarcastically.
"Yaz I-"
"Was it all a lie," Yasmina spatted. "Wanting to be friends? Pretending you cared about.. you just needed someone to hide what you were doing. Tell me I'm wrong!"
Sammy can't say anything but let's out an little sob was all they could hear.
"I'm such an idiot," Yasmina says and walks away.
Aithne hears her tone, it sounded so, defeated.
"You are wrong!" Sammy goes after her. "I just didn't know how to say it, how to explain to you. Just because I spied doesn't change who I am," she tries to explain, reaches out to grab Yasmina's shoulder.
"Don't touch me!" Yasmina tells her, and turns to face her again. "Go away Sammy."
Heartbroken Sammy hurries away from group, Aithne was about to go after her, yes what Sammy did was wrong, but they are all still in danger out in the open, but thankfully she didn't go far just giving everyone space, Yamina walks back to the others, Bumpy starts grunting and standing on her back legs trying to attention.
"Not now Bumpy," Yasmina says faintly.
Aithne would have put a hand on comfort on the Track Star's shoulder but thought against it, she need space too.
"Look," Ben stated. "I know the situation we're in is suboptimal."
"It's trash, just say it's trash Ben," Brooklynn says, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"Trash? It's gone to shite," Aithne added.
"Yes, but despite the obvious trashitude-" Bumpy bellows jump up at Ben. "We- we need to- Bumpy, what are you.."
Hearing approaching heavy stomping, something big is heading there way, Aithne turned around from behind, trees move and snapped, the Indominus it crashing its way out from the jungle, it roars as is charges forward, the teens scream as they separate to find cover.
"This is trash! This is trash!" Ben screams.
They all regroup by the side of the van, the Indominus keeps on running, it didn't seem to notice them.
"It passed us?" Aithne inquired
"What the heck?" Darius says.
Then a Helicopter is whirring after the dinosaur, firing at the monstrous.
"Masrani's helicopter!" Kenji pointed out. "That's his call sign on the tail!"
"They're shooting at the indominus!" Darius says, running after them.
They all follow, hearing the Indominus roaring in destress, they soon stopped running and watched from afar, seeing a huge glass dome in the distance, the helicopter is still firing, suddenly hear glass breaking that did not settle Aithne's nerves.
"What was that?" Brooklynn asked.
"I didn't like the sound of it," Aithne added.
"Yeah! Kick its butt Masrani!" Kenji cheers. "We're saved! Yeah, baby!"
They watch a horde of birds fly up towards the chopper, attacking it, the blade get caught on fire, they can do nothing but watch the helicopter fall and crash into the dome and exploded on impact, Aithne quickly realised that the birds where not the tropical birds that you get on island, no, they are flying reptiles and heading there way.
"With those Pteranodons loose, we're sitting ducks!" Darius exclaimed. "We got to take cover!"
Kenji takes it the tablet from Brooklynn and points out.
"The Kayak River! The entrance is near here. It goes underground, beneath the ridge, if we follow it, it'll take us right to the main park."
"Then that's where we need to be, come on!"
They all start running, Aithne skidded to a sudden stop when Bumpy squeals, Ben and Darius go back to get her, Aithne stops them both runs back and picks Bumpy up herself
"I've got Bumpy! Run!" Aithne orders them as she runs back.
She squats on Bumpy's side, lifting the baby dino from underneath her stomach, with a huff she runs to catch up with the others, however Bumpy is not light despite being so young, she is falling behind. A Pteranodon swoops down just missing Kenji, he leads them out of the reptiles sight, Aithne's lungs where burning, her arms are screaming at her from the strain, but she kept on going, she readjusts her grip on Bumpy.
"There it is!" Brooklynn cries out, as she, Kenji, Yasmina, Sammy enter the cave, soon followed by Darius and Ben.
The youngest boys look over their shoulders at Aithne and Bumpy.
"Keep going!" Aithne shouts.
They enter the cave, Aithne grunts when she feels her left shoulder getting scratched by a Pteranodon, she nearly falls forward Bumpy squeals, but she regains her balance, looking over her bleeding shoulder a Pteranodon lands behind her. With a determined inhale she sprint into the cave, the flying reptile follows after her. the cave is mostly dark with only soft light at the end, the others where there waiting with fainted breath for the MMA fighter, Yasmina was starting to close the door, as she was getting closer Aithne throws Bumpy first then she drives forward herself landing hard on her front not caring the pain on her side tenfold she was so frecking exhausted. Yasmina slams the door in the dinosaurs face, hearing a rather satisfying thud when it made contact, they all panting from relief and exhaustion, but not as much as Aithne who is still on the fall, she rolls to her right side, taking huge whizzing breathes, Bumpy wabbles up to nuzzles her face and purrs.
"Your welcome Bumps," she whizzes, weakly petting the dino's head.
She slowly gets on her hands and knees, she notices a hand offered to her, she looks at who's hand it was.
"Ta," Aithne thanked, grabbing Yasmina's hand, she helps her up.
Once everyone composes themselves they head to the river where many kayaks waited for them, each one grabbing a life-vest from the ground and putting them on, Aithne takes off her bag and puts it back on with it now on her chest, so she could put the life-vest on, wincing when the vest touched her fresh cut on her shoulder but she ignored it for now, she didn't fasten it due to her bag but better than nothing.
Aithne finds a Kayak with a single seat, properly to be used by staff or life guards, she grabs the rope that was tied to it and pulls it all towards the others.
"Brooklynn and I call the CKK," Kenji says.
"CKK?" Brooklynn questioned.
"Cool kids' Kayak," Kenji replied, pulling out a pair of sunglasses.
"Ben and Bumpy can go in this one with m-." Darius stated.
"I'll go with them," Yasmina quickly cuts in, shoulder push pass Sammy. "Let's go dude," she pushes Ben to the Kayak.
Aithne sighed, clearly that Yasmina is still pissed about Sammy, and she is too, but she can put it to one side for now, they safety is still number one. Ben and Yasmina struggle putting Bumpy in the Kayak, Aithne heads on over. Bumpy sees her approach, Aithne picks her up again and lowers her in front of Ben, leaving Ben and Yaz shocked by how easy she made it look, even after running with her.
Once everyone is in a kayak, they paddle down the river, the current was easy and smooth given Aithne the moment to rest her arms. Aithne was on Yasmina and Ben left, she watches Kenji and Brooklynn's Kayak bumping into Yasmina and Ben.
"Watch it!" Yasmina spatted.
"CKK has right of way," Kenji replied cooly.
"CKK is going to be R.I.P if you're not careful Kenji," Aithne warned.
"Sorry," Kenji squeaked.
"Hey, the cave's getting bigger," Brooklynn points out. "And brighter?"
They enter an opening waterfall with bioluminescence all around the cave wall, it was one of the beautiful things Aithne has ever seen, she was too distracted by the waterfall that she didn't realise was caught in a small current and was getting closer to it.
"No, no, no, no, ughah!" she groaned, nearly getting drenched, she paddles away, hear Ben and Yasmina giggle, she smirks and splashes them with her oar, the three of them laugh.
"Glad I can amuse you two with the water show," Aithne says brushes her wet hair away from her eyes.
They paddle by in silence for a couple of minutes, Aithne was starting to relax when she notices Ben stopped paddling and tending Bumpy who is looking unwell.
"Ben would you please put down that overgrown turtle and pick up your paddle?" says Yasmina.
"I think Bumpy's seasick," Ben replied, rubbing Bumpy's back.
"Wait how can she be seasick we are not in the se-," Aithne muttered. "You know what never mind."
"I think you need to paddle!" Yasmina responded.
Bumpy groans loudly.
"I think.. we both need to prepare for dino-vomit!"
Aithne drifts her kayak closer to theirs, and using the rope from kayak she ties the two together.
"Ben you just force on Bumpy," Aithne says. "I got this."
"Ok."
Aithne and Yasmina resume paddling.
"I know what you are going to say," Yasmina broke the silence. "That I should not be too hard on Sammy."
"I wasn't going to say that," Aithne replied.
"That look on your face tells a different story," Yasmina responded.
She did had a concern look on her.
"Trust is fragile a thing," Aithne replied. "One day it can be strong, and then the next it breaks like glass, and reforming it takes longer to be like it was before."
"Where are you going with this?" Yasmina asked, cutting to the chase.
"I'm not saying that you should forgive Sammy immediately, but take a step back and see though her eyes, if you had to spy to protect your family, your loved ones, would you not do the same, to lie, to sneak around going behind everyone's back, to have the fear of if you cannot do it, and your family could be gone."
Yasmina doesn't answer but the look in her eyes say that she was thinking on what to say next.
"Would you have done it? If it was you?" Yasmina asked quietly.
"In a heartbeat," Aithne replied at once. "My family is everything, come hell or high water, I would've done anything. 'Together we strong, divided and we fall."
"What?" Yasmina inquired. What does that-"
"You guys," Sammy called out. "Should the algae be moving?"
Up ahead they see Two glowing dinosaurs grazing by the riverbank.
"Don't panic guys," Darius calls out. "They're herbivores!"
"Hate to burst your bubble Dino-Kid," Aithne shouts back. "But herbivores can still do some damage if you don't piss them off."
"Doctor Wu must have put the bioluminescent gene into these Parasaurolophus's," Darius says, ignoring the warning.
"And he is in Dino Geek mode," Aithne mutters.
"What do you mean I insulted Bumpy?" Yasmina asked Ben.
"You called her a turtle and now she's upset!" Ben retorted.
"Ben dinosaurs can't understand English!"
"Well I'm glad she can't, because there have been several unkind things said."
Aithne had to look away to not let her smirk be seen, trying not to laugh.
"Okay, okay, I'm sorry Bumpy," Yasmina says.
Bumpy squeals.
"Oh great! Now you made it worse."
"Yep, this is the kayak I picked," Yasmina says to herself. "And don't think I can't see you laughing O'Conner," tapping her oar on Aithne's back.
Aithne tries to hold her laughing, having to cough to stop herself, Bumpy's squeals attracted the two Parasaurolophus's, they enter the water swimming towards the group, stopping near Darius, Sammy, Brooklynn and Kenji kayaks, Kenji nudges one with his oar, while Darius pats the other on its nose, as it pulls away from the young boy, a third one appears from the water on Darius other side, then other one, and another, not like what is happening she quickly unties the two Kayaks. As she depicted the Parasaurolophus's start shoving the Kayak's into one another. After nearly get smacked by one of their tails, Aithne had enough she stands up on her Kayak ready to fight them with her oar as they come closer to Bumpy, Ben and Yaz. Suddenly they stopped attacking, looked ahead of them at a dark tunnel, one of them bellow and as quick as the appeared they ran or rather swam away from them.
Aithne sits back down, and they drift down the river.
"Uh cool kids to nerds," Kenji calls out. "Where are you?"
"Over here!" Darius shouts back. "I think something scared the Parasaurolophus's."
"Darius if we stopped padding," Sammy asked. "Why are we still moving forward?"
Aithne looked into the water, and her heart stooped.
"We're in a Current!" Aithne shouts. "Paddle our we go into the tunnel!"
With all their strength they try to get back to the main path, the current is too strong, one by one they go down screaming into the darkness; however they stop when they are blinded by the sunlight. They are back out into the open, but where did they end up.
"We're okay, we're okay," Ben repeated.
"What?" Kenji gasps after putting on his sunglasses again, looking around in fright.
"Why did you gasp?" Ben asked. "It didn't sound like a good gasp!"
"Cause I know exactly where we are, guys," Kenji whimpered. "We're in the Jurassic World Lagoon, and so is Mosasaurus."
They all gasp, Aithne tightens her grip on her oar, glancing around the water surface for any sign of movement. That's when they all heard it, a low rumbling growl and they see a tail fin appear, brushing the water, they watch is swim around them.
"It's circling," Brooklynn quietly spoke. "Testing us, it's acting like a shark, Brooklynn. We're intruders in its domain so its investigating us, before it get confident, decides to. To..
"Let not give it time to figure out," Aithne replied.
They hear it snarling, it is growing confident, it's only a matter of time before it attacks them.
"We have to get out now!" Kenji exclaimed.
"There's a ladder by the spectator stands," Darius says pointing to the stand.
"How are we gonna-"
"Y'all?"
Aithne looked below her; it swam right under them. Time's up.
"Paddle! Paddle like hell!" Aithne shouts, and starts paddling.
"Go! Go! Go!" Darius shouts too.
They are all paddle for dear life, Kenji and Brooklynn taking the lead, followed by Yasmina and Ben, and Darius, Sammy and Aithne forming behind.
"This is not how Kenji wanted to go out!"
"This isn't on my to-do list either!"
If Aithne's arms where tried before, they feel like they are going to fall off at any moment, but she pressed on, suddenly she felt her Kayak get hit, then she is hauled up, she yelled out of shock the Mosa's tail knocked her high in the air, sending and her Kayak a good 10 feet up.
"Aithne!" Ben calls out.
She lands in the water, is was shocking cold, taste of salt and fish hit her nose, not daring to open her eyes to see where the Mosa is, she swims towards surface, she coughs out the water, Darius, and Sammy paddle by her, it would seem she landed in the middle of the group.
"Aithne hurry!" Darius calls out, still paddling.
She swims towards them; she grabs on to the side of the Kayak.
"Keep paddling," she tells them as she pulls herself up, seating in the middle.
Despite losing her oar, she tries to help by using her hand to paddle but what good can that do, she is so exhausted, the Mosasaurs circles back, it got them in its sights.
"Come on we can make it," Aithne encourage.
"Don't look back Sammy! Just keep paddling!" Daruis says.
"I'm trying," Sammy responded. "What's Yaz doing?"
"What?!" Aithne gasped, she looks to see Yasmina on metal pillar in the middle of the lagoon.
Mosa is right on their tail, Yasmina start hitting the pole with her oar.
"Hey! Hey! Over here! HHEEEYYYY!" She creams at the top of her lungs.
The Mosa stops going after them and swims away.
"Over here! Here! Here!"
"She's distracting it," Darius says. "Buying us time, keep going!"
They see Kenji, Brooklynn Ben cheer from the stand, when they get to the Aithne turns back to the lagoon in horror.
"She's trapped!" Aithne exclaimed, seeing Mosa circling around the pillar.
"We gotta do something!" Sammy pleaded.
"Grab the chain!" Kenji yells, from the control panel.
Aithne, Darius and Sammy started run up the steps to where the control panel is after they saw Yasmina jumped onto the chain that pulled her up high, as the chain is bring pulled back to the stands, it was slow, Aithne looked back at the water, seeing the scaley hid disappearing into the depths, why was it doing that? it cant have given up, that she understood what the chain was used for, to bring its food.
Its going to drive up!
"Yaz!" Aithne yelled. "Starts swinging! Now!"
Yasmina did as she was told and swings the chain back and forth as best she could.
"Come on Yaz!" Sammy called out.
"Oh no, no, no," Ben mumbles, gripping on Aithne's arm.
"She's not going to make it," Kenji mutters.
"She will," Aithne says, grip the railing tight.
The Mosa jumped up, its maw opened wide, it snaps it jaws on the cable just missing Yasmina, the bite was so strong it breaks the cable in half, it falls back into the water with a huge splash, the chain carrying Yasmina falls towards the stands, she screams is flying towards the ground, her grip slips and land roughly falling onto her side holding her leg.
"Yamina!" Sammy cried.
Aithne wastes no time running towards her, jumping down from the steps, she and Sammy reached her first.
"You alright?" Aithne asked her, kneeling beside her helping her to sit up.
"I'm okay," Yasmina replied, but looks down on her ankle. she touches it, but pulls back in pain. "I think."
"Uh, also," Ben states. "Where'd everyone go?"
"Good question," Aithne says removing of her life-vest throwing it to one side. "Let find out away from the water shall we."
Yasmina tries to get up, but falls back down with a gasp, Aithne picks her up, her arm under her knees and the other on her back.
"Hey!" Yasmina protested.
"That ankle needs looking at," Aithne responded walking towards the seats in the stands. "While I'm doing that, you lot try and find something to contact Dave and Roxie or anyone."
"Where's the tablet?"
"Never mind that, just look around," Aithne called over her shoulder.
She places Yasmina on the bench, she winced when her feet touched the floor.
"Okay that just says that you can't put any weight on that foot at the moment," Aithne informs. "Is it alright I take a look?"
"What?" Yasmina says, as she was removing her life-vest.
"I need to know if its simple sprain or fracture," she replied.
"Ok."
Aithne carefully unties the shoelace to remove the shoe, and lowers the sock half way down.
"What's up Doc?"
"Well, its already swollen and bruising," she replied, lightly touching around the ankle. And its getting warm to the touch, it's a pretty bad sprain."
"Great," Yasmina complained.
"Could've been worse, it could've been a dislocated."
"Speaking from experience?"
"Dislocated my knee back in my rookie days," she replied removing her bag. "Worse pain ever."
"Yikes," Yasmina grimaced.
"Yep," she opens the front pocket and takes out the bandages, Yasmina look puzzled that they are dry, Aithne noticed. "Oh my bag's waterproof, a company back home sponsored me early years, and I've not changed it since."
She carefully rolls up her sock and starts wrapping up the ankle.
"You're good at this," Yasmina commented.
"Yeah, I go to my local gym, help out young fighters and I studied first aid, so I could help if needed, I cannot perform surgery, but I know what to if someone takes one too many hits to the head."
She opens another pocket and takes out a instant cool pack.
"This will have to do," she gently places the ice pack on Yasmina's ankle, and Yasmina takes it from her. "It may not be the right bandage, but it'll do the job until we get to professional help, or if the others find anything."
She sits next Yasmina; they sat in silence watching the sunsetting.
"Aithne," Yasmina starts. "Back at the river what did you mean by together strong thing?"
"Together we strong, divided and we fall," Aithne rehashed. "Oh it's something my Da would always say, it kinda like the O'Conner family motto if you will. In Gaelic its 'Le chéile táimid láidir, roinnte agus táimid ag titim'. It means that together in hard time in life we have each other's back, and, that applies here too."
"You don't give up do you?" Yasmina says.
"Nah," Aithne says, before standing up, "But I give my all, same as you." she goes to put her hands on her sides, she noticed something was off. "What the-" she looks down where the gun hostel is, but no gun. "Oh shite!"
"What? What wrong?"
"The gun is gone; it must have fallen out when that bloody Mosa set me flying."
"Yeah well I dropped the tablet," Yasmina sheepishly.
"I'm not driving in there again, I'm stubborn not insane."
Aithne walks away, she might as well look around herself seeing how none of the others have reported anything, she walks by Sammy.
"Hey," she stops when Sammy spoke. "Uh, how's Yaz doing?"
"Physical?" Aithne responded. "Or emotionally?"
"Both."
"Her ankle isn't broken, but she won't be doing track for some time, as for emotions wise, she might not be forgiving you, yet."
"Are, are you mad too," Sammy timidly asked wrapping her arm around her front.
"I was," Aithne sighed. "Because I felt stupid that I helped to aid your lie, but then I thought, what would I do if my family was in trouble too, I may not have forgiven you today Sam, but I can look pass it, life is too short to hold a grudge." giving her a small smile, the cowgirl smiles back. "Best wait five minutes before you head over."
Aithne carries on walking, she looks up at the stands, spotting Ben napping on the bench using a sound asleep Bumpy as a pillow, and Brooklynn, Kenji, and Darius at the top, she makes her way around the corner out of sight, it may not be the best idea seeing anything can happen, but she needed to. Once she was far enough, she takes a shaken breathe, nearly falling to her knees, tears filled her eyes, but she refuses to let them fall, that was terrifying, death seems to after them. The Indominus hunting them down more then once, a crazy man trying to steal their only transport, flying reptiles that where one minute away from reattaching the flying monkeys scene from Wizard of OZ and then nearly getting eaten by Jaws Jurassic counterpart. This place is Hell on earth.
After taking a few more steady breathes she composes herself, rubbing her face with her hands, wincing when she felt pain from her eyebrow and jaw, she spots what looks like a small workers tool shed, she opens it thankful it was not locked, and inside was many items, brooms, mops, buckets, bags of sawdust, a mirror on the wall, she glimpse at her reflection, the cut on her eyebrow is scabbed over, and her jaw was black and blue, she even looked at her teeth to see if any where chipped, she did not fancy going to the dentist after they get off the island, then again going there would be much better anytime now. But nothing seems wrong with them so that's one thing less to worry about, then she spots in the mirror behind her was an axe, not to sure why they would have a axe in the area, on one hand things on this island has gone to shit, while on the other she has another weapon to fight off anymore dinosaurs.
She grabs it testing the weight, it was heavy but not too heavy for her, so after looking around the confined shed to see if she missed anything she leaves the shed and shutting it close. That moment a loud siren goes off.
"Now what!?" Aithne exclaimed.
And another one done, damn and its nearly the end of the season 1.
