A Fighter to the End
Chapter 7 - End of the Line
Aithne stares at her shaking hands as she slowly stands up, her right palm has a deep cut from the centre up towards her thumb along with a couple smaller ones around and on her fingers, her breathes are shaken, her ears ringing so she can't make out what was being said around her, feeling lightheaded, she closes her hands into fist as anger boils inside, she turned quickly to punch the back of the seat next to her, then punches again, and again, and again, and kept on doing it getting faster than grabbing it shaking it furiously while yelling in rage at herself and sorrow not caring if her blooded hand pain increases nor stain the fabric, before gripping the sides of her head, she stopped, taking in deep breaths closing her eyes tight keeping the tears from falling, she felt something nuzzling her right shin, looking down only to see Bumpy, the Ankylosaurus grunts, her black eyes looking up at her, Aithne looks away, not baring to look at the baby dino. How much Ben cared for Bumpy.
"The monorail's going back!" Daruis cries.
The monorail turns making them all fall to the floor, and snapping Aithne back into the room.
"What do you mean 'going back'" Brooklynn questioned.
"When we switched tracks," Darius explained "We ended up on one headed north," he heads back to the panel.
Aithne did not seat up quickly like the others, her mind still on Ben, she gripped her blooded hand again, Yasmina spotted the drops of blood, Bumpy squealed looking at it too. Acting quickly she opens fisticuffs bag and grabbed a bandage roll, Aithne did not even flinch.
"Aithne?" She says softly, Aithne turned her head to face Yasmina, she shows her the bandage roll to her, silently telling her she need tending to.
Aithne just raises her right hand without a word, Yamina understands and starts wrapping up the wound.
"We gotta get off this monorail now!" Darius calls out.
Brooklynn gets up and looks out the rail.
"Oh! The track dips down up ahead! We can jump there!"
"What?" Kenji yelped.
"Jump?" Sammy squealed.
"We can't!" Yasmina exclaimed, finishing tying Aithne's bandaged hand. "It's too far to jump!"
"It's the only way!"
Aithne gets up tightens her bag strap before bringing it to her front, they all prepare to jump out of the window the Pteranodon smashed into as the monorail gets lower, Aithne kneels to pick up Bumpy, but gripping onto the baby dino's armour like body played merry hell on her hand as she tries again Kenji picks Bumpy up instead, not time to argue she lets him.
"One," Darius starts counting down. "Two… three! Now!"
They all jump out one by one, screaming and yelling all the way down, they hit branches on the way down before they hit solid ground, then tumble downhill, Aithne crashes into a tree back first then Yasmina crashes into her, accidently elbowing her on her bruised rib knocking the wind out of her.
"Sorry," Yasmina groaned as she stands up.
"Forget it," Aithne grunted, hunching over as she slowly stands up too.
"Is everyone alright?" Darius asks.
"Ish," Brooklynn grunted. "Are you?"
"Bumpy? Where's Bumpy?" Kenji exclaims. "I lost her when I the ground, she's gotta be here. Bumpy? Bumpy!"
"Shh!" Brooklynn hurries to him. "There are still dinosaurs out here, including Toro and-"
"Bumpy!" Kenji cries out, ignoring Brooklynn's warning. "Bumpy!"
Aithne stands up straight and as she reaches for her belt she realised she doesn't have the axe anymore; she cursed to herself for leaving it back on the Monorail, she stopped thinking about her mistake when the Voice announcer calls out.
"Attention, all park-goers must report to the south ferry dock for immediate evacuation, last ferry departs in 60 minutes."
"No chance we could get there in an hour!" Yasmina states. "It's way too far!"
"Not if we leave right now!" Brooklyn responded.
"But Bumpy and Ben-"
"WE CAN'T GO BACK FOR HIM!" Aithne yelled; everyone froze on her outburst. "Ben… Ben is gone…. There is nothing we can do now, nothing I could've-" she looks down at her feet, he hands tightened into fist, she inhales before looking back them now determined. "We need to move… we can make it if we go now."
They stays quiet until the announcement called out again.
"Last ferry departs in 60 minutes."
"We have to go!" Aithne demanded and started running, Darius runs then so do the others.
She glances over her shoulder before looking at her at her blooded bandaged hand.
"I'm sorry Ben," she muttered before a tear falls down her cheek.
They run and run but it seems like they have barely scratched the surface, just more jungle up ahead.
"Keep going! Come on!" Aithne hears Darius encouraging the group.
Yasmina yelps, falling over again, Aithne skidded to stop and runs back passing the boys while Sammy and Brooklynn help Yasmina up, she is falling forwards by the time Aithne reaches them, catching Yasmina, she starts to pick her up like a firefighter,
"HEY! Aithne!" Yasmina snapped at her, now placed on Aithne's shoulders, her right arm and like locked in Aithne's arms. "What are you doing?! I got this!"
"You can yell at me later, Aithne snapped back, starting to run again. "Let's move!"
"Last ferry departure in 50 minutes."
"Thanks a fucking bunch!" Aithne shouts out stopping in her tracks. "Isn't there a short cut on this fucking island?!
"The Tunnels!" Daruis says. "Kenji! Kenji! The maintenance tunnels, there has to be one that leads to the docks, right? Kenji right?"
"Ye-Yeah there is one not far from here," Kenji half heartly replied.
Yasmina taps Aithne's arm; she looks over her shoulder to sees Yasmina's vey annoyed look on her face.
"You going to put me down now?" she asks with a raised brow.
"When we get to these tunnels," Aithne replied.
Yasmina scoffs.
Kenji leads them to a hatch that was well hidden, as promised Aithne let Yasmina down, she goes down first, making sure it was clear she tells the others to come down too, Darius, then Brooklynn, followed by Sammy, Yasmina climbed down as carefully as she could nearly slipping when she got close to the ground, Aithne stops her from walking.
"Don't even think about it O'Connor," Yasmina warned.
"It's that or a piggy back?" Aithne retorted. "Either way you are not walking on that leg."
The two glared at one another, neither one seems to be backing down, when Kenji slides down the ladder, Yasmina scoffs.
"Whatever."
Glad Aithne lowers herself as she is the tallest girl, Yasmina gets on her back, wrapping her arms around Aithne shoulders, and Aithne grips her hands on the back of Yasmina's knees, before standing up straight.
"This'll get us to the dock in half the time," Kenji tells them before running down the tunnel.
They follow after him, Aithne must have gotten a second wind after her outburst, and in a way she was thankful, she is going to need it if they are going to get the ferry on time.
"Are we sure 'Mr VIP' knows what he's doing?" Brooklynn asks Darius.
"Kenji took me down here before," Darius replied. "Just trust him we'll be outta here in no… time.
Aithne turned the corner to see a gate blocking their path.
"Everything looks different with the lights all freaky like this, okay?" Kenji exclaimed. "This way," he runs back, passing them.
They watch him turn into another tunnel not far from them, but from Kenji frustrated 'No!' it was another dead-end, Kenji runs back and tries another, they follow and by the time they reach him, the path is blocked.
"This wasn't here before!"
"Why are there so many security gates?" Yasmina questions what they are thinking.
"The evacuation," Brooklynn points out. "The park must be locking down automatically!"
"Oh we have to go 'round!" Kenji huffed. "This way!"
They reach another blocked path, then another and then a locked door near a set of lockers, Aithne start to wonder how long they have been running around and how long they have left, Sammy and Brooklynn start opening the lockers, a stun prod falls out. She picks it up.
"Oh, Brooklynn picks it up. "We can use this for-"
Kenji snatches it from her and tries to open the door with it, but end up shocking himself he collapses on the floor.
Brooklynn takes it back from him.
"A walking stick." Brooklynn finished turning to Aithne and Yasmina.
She lowers down for Yasmina, and she takes the prod from Brooklynn, Kenji walks away,
They carrying on, trying to find and exit to the docks, walk on, and find another blocked of path, just as the others start to complain.
"Attention, all park-goers must report to the south ferry dock for immediate evacuation, last ferry departs in 30 minutes."
"Not helping!" Kenji shout up at the ceiling.
"Just try to remember," Darius carefully says. "Breathe-"
"What do you think I'm doing?" Kenji snaps. "Coming down here was your idea Darius so just back off!"
Aithne was about to tell Kenji off for nearly biting the kid's head off, but Sammy beat her to it.
"Uh Kenji, Daruis, the way we came from, where does that tunnel end?"
"It opens into the park, I guess," Kenji replied. "Why do you-"
He was cut off by a loud snarl from other end of the tunnel, the tunnel Sammy asked about, the flickering red light casts a huge shadow, and it has lots of sharp teeth as it snarls again. They all begin backing away slowly, Yasmina trips backwards, Aithne helps her back up quickly and moves her towards Brooklynn who is standing behind her, seeing how Kenji grabbed the stun prod, she wished she still had that axe, but when they finally see what casted that shadow turned out to be a size of a chicken.
"It's just a Compy," Darius sighed.
Kenji scares it away by turning on the stick, it shrieked in fright and ran away.
"Seriously Kenji?" Brooklynn stated. "It's like a foot tall!"
"And uh," Yasmina points ahead of them. "Not alone."
It regrouped with it little cluster, and there are a lot of them.
"Ah shite," Aithne huffed. "It brought the cavalry."
"We need to go," Darius tells them. "In a group, Compys can-"
"Not really the time for a lesson, Dino-nerd!" Kenji snapped, a Compy jumps on to his arm, he grabs it and throws it away.
Aithne would have said something if a Compy didn't jump onto her too, she grabs it by it neck, not caring if she was being carefully to not snap its neck, she had just about had it from nearly getting eaten by the hundredth time within 24 hours, she throws it back into the group of Compys, but another quickly jumped on her again.
"Why not?" Brooklynn spat. "It's not like you've gotten us anywhere close to the dock Mr VIP!"
Compy clawed at Aithne's left arm, she smacks it off her.
"Oh! Yeah, I'm sorry. Don't you have some sort of 'unboxing being a brat all the time' video to be shooting?"
Two clawed at her bandaged knee, tearing into it, she kicks them off.
"Hey calm yourselves!" Sammy exclaimed. "You're scaring the itty-bitty Compy family."
Aithne kicked one Compy from biting Brooklynn.
"'Scaring the'. Are you for real?" Another Compy jumps on him. "After everything, you're defending the dinosaurs?"
She kicks another from getting near to Yasmina.
"It's not her fault you got us lost!"
Aithne grabbed another that jumped onto her shoulder she bites her ear, this time she heard a little snap when she grabbed its neck, going limp in her hand, and throwing it back the Compys, her anger getting closer to boiling point.
"It's definitely her fault for some of this."
One bites into her shoe, thankfully the leather boot is thick, she kicks it with her other foot.
"Let it go, Yaz! It's just a phone!"
Another jumps on her shoulder, she grabs it by the tail and throws it away.
"Wait what?! I don't even know what's going on anymore!"
"Are we really going to argue when we are minutes away to become an 'all you can eat buffet'!" Aithne shouted at them after kicking three Compys away them, looking like she is becoming a Compy scratching post.
"Guys! Just-"
A thunderous roar made everyone freeze, even the Compys, they know that roar, coming into the tunnel, Toro stomp closer, the Compys shrilled as they ran like hell passing by the campers like forgetting them entirely.
"Anyone else think he is still pissed about the smack to the face?" Aithne whispered loudly.
Toro roars again as if to answer her question, he charges towards them.
"Well the Compys got the right idea," Aithne says, getting Yasmina on her back quickly, "Run away!"
They dashed down the tunnel, Kenji in the lead, Toro is right on their tails.
"Now you know which way to go?!" Brooklynn yelled.
"You wanna stop and ask for directions?!" Kenji retorted.
"Less yelling more running!" Aithne shouted, clearly done with their bullshit.
They snap turn into another tunnel, Toro trips, they make the gap count, however ending at another dead end did not help, they dodge Toro as he slams into the gate, it was either due to the bad red lighting, or Aithne hitting it in the face before-hand made it hard for it to get them, it did not matter but it might not last long before it gets them. Around another corner, Aithne is ahead, she gets an idea, seeing the vents, runs ahead to get to the nearest one, Yasmina drops down from her back, so Aithne can open it, she gestures the others to get in, hearing Toro coming closer she is the last to enter, they stay quiet as Toro stomps pass them, they held their breathes as it roars before continuing it 'chase.'
"We can't stay here!" Sammy whispered. "The ferry-"
"Shh!"
Yasmina crawls deeper into the vent, Daruis and Aithne follow, they find another exit, seeing how the way they came in is a death zone, the three of them crawled closer to the end, try open it by force, so Yasmina and Darius prepare to use the prod to open it, but Aithne stops them, so instead she sits in front of the vent, brings her right leg up to her chest and with one kicks she gets it half open, but it made a loud thud that echoed in the tunnels, they wait for something to happen, nothing. Aithne kicks it again and gets it open, Toro smashes his head into the vent behind them, Brooklynn, Kenji, and Sammy hurries to the exit, she and Darius let the others go in first, Dino-kid still holding the prod, they get out of the vent, and hurry to the others. That was too close, Darius hands back the prod to Yasmina.
Without saying anything Aithne runs with Sammy, Kenji, and Yasmina when they see the sign 'Exit to Dock 1000ft', relief was coming back to her, they where going to be okay, but that relief quickly disappeared, the exit is completely blocked off by a stone wall. They begin looking for a door, a hatch or something to get them out, but the only thing around them are crate and containers from big to small and that it, they are trapped.
"There's gotta be a door or…"
"There's no way out," Brooklynn added. "They must've sealed it off after the park was finished."
"Ugh! Can't anyone associated with this place make just one good decision?" Yasmina complained.
A roar echoed in the tunnel, Toro has found a way pass the vents, they regroup near the end of the tracks, Darius drops down below the track, smashing his fist on the stone wall, Aithne watched, and her heart sank for him.
"Darius, Aithne," Kenji states. What do we do now?"
"I don't know," Darius replied, Aithne didn't answer but drops down near Darius looking around for anything. Toro roars again, it's getting closer.
"But you-"
"I don't know," Darius shouted. "I don't know what do, I didn't know what to do about Ben or Bumpy, or when the indominus-
"No," Aithne stops him, kneeling down in front of him, looking him in the eye. "Your quick thinking got us out before anyone else, the minute you doubt yourself that that the end, I get that you're the youngest here Darius, but you've got a hell of a mind."
"Aithne's right," Kenji says. "None of us would have known what to do, Darius, but because you didn't give up, we didn't give up either."
"You kept us goin'," Sammy added. "No matter what some of us have done."
"You made us feel like we were in this together," Yasmina included. "So, we are. We're a team, we're your team."
"Things fall apart," Brooklynn quotes. "And that's okay, because when that happens-"
"We pick up the pieces and we keep going," Aithne ended the quote.
Darius looks back at Aithne.
"But you did better job than me Aithne," Darius replied." You have be taking care of us, you've been carrying us this whole time." he points at Yasmina. "Literally."
"Not everyone," she looked at her bandaged hand, everyone else look at her sadly, "I couldn't save Ben," she closes her hand and stands up with determination in her eyes. "But I'll be damned if I let anyone else here down, together we strong, divided and we fall."
She holds her hand out to Darius, he takes it and stands up, Aithne pats his shoulder.
"We can do this," she says to him.
"You are right Fisticuffs," Darius commented with a smile.
"A fighter to the end," Aithne replied with a smirk.
Kenji helps Darius out from the track, while Brooklynn help Aithne up. Toro roars again.
"He's getting closer," Brooklynn whispers.
"Let's see what's in these crates," Darius says.
They spread out, Aithne opens one create to find, blank signs, several two by fours and 5-inch-long nails. Before she could think on what she could do with what she found, she hears Kenji hoping for something that is, and I quote 'something pointy and something hurty.' Before turning around to see what is in Kenji's crate,
"Medical supplies?" Kenji moaned; thought it would be something he wanted.
"We had these around the house after my dad got sick," Darius explains, taking a container out. "Super compressed air, sensitive to pressure and heat!"
"Might be able to scare toro off," Brooklynn suggested.
"Or distract him long enough for us to find another exit." Darius added. "Aithne, Kenji, Brooklynn lets get this crate loaded on the cart, Sammy, uses those bandages and tape to make a fuse. We're gonna need something to light it with."
Yasmina answers that question by turning on the prod.
"That'll do," Aithne states.
Toro roars again, time is almost up, doing as Darius told them, they got what they need done when they heard Toro footstep echoing down the tunnel, they all hurry to hide behind the crate ready to light it, Aithne pokes her head out, Toro is in the right spot for the plan to work, she gives them the thumbs up.
"Light it up," Darius whispered.
Yasmina turns on the prod, but it's not working.
"Yaz?"
"I'm trying! It won't light!"
"Wait hand sanitizer!" Kenji whispers, opening Ben's bumbag, getting the bottle out and pouring some of it onto the fuse. "This stuff will burn."
Yasmina tries again and they have fire.
"Thanks Ben," Brooklynn whispered.
Toro roars, it now or never.
"Now!"
They push the crate forwards Toro, then Carno runs towards and smashes it into it like his name sake, pieces shatter everywhere, they all ducked and cover, so they don't get hit by burn wood or air compressed tanks that a highly flammable. Toro shakes its head after smashing the crate, it roars once it see them.
"Run!"
"Where?"
"Anywhere!"
It charges at them, they had no choice but to separate from one another when it swipes its tail at them, unfortunately Aithne get hit in the chest and is sent flying she lands hard on her front her bag cushioned must of the impact but it didn't mean it still hurt, looking up just to see Toro going after Kenji who jumps down onto the track, before changing its mind and going after Brooklynn and Sammy, feeling heat near her face, she looks to see one of the two by fours. Light bulb moment, she hears a metal clank when she looks back up Toro is going after Yasmina, quickly she grab a burning 2by4 like a flaming torch, climbs up on one of the wooden crate, jumps onto box to crate, one bigger than the other, just as Toro was about to bite Yasmina, Aithne jumps up towards Toro's head, raising the 2by4 with both hand above her head and smashes the wood onto its face, Toro roar out of pain, and bits of burning wood stings his nostrils, Aithne lands with a tug n roll, she turns to Yasmina.
"Go!"
She faces Toro when she heard fierce growls in front of her, it remember her, when it roars at Aithne, it was like it was saying 'you will pay for that.'
"Come on then!" she taunted him before running off, he chases after her.
She drive out of the way when it nearly chomped on her, she duck when Toro swipes it tail at her, hitting a crate instead, metal pipes fly out, hitting the floor with loud clangs, without thinking she grabs the closest one to her before sprinting off, Darius throws wood piece at Toro getting it to chase him instead, Aithne climbs on the crates on the track, Toro carelessly runs into a stack knocking them everywhere, one hit the crate she is standing on she missteps and falls but she felt a hand grabbing her arm stooping her from falling, she looks up to that is was Yasmina, she helps her back on the platform, they see Darius leading Toro in the track, with the Prod in hand, she and Yasmina regroup with Brooklynn and Sammy, hearing Toro roaring followed by a slam, it missed its attack, Kenji helps Darius up, a metal clang then a hissing, a tank is open,
Aithne gets the girls to cover behind some crates that have not been knocked over, the boys show up, Darius is preparing to throws the stick into the gas!
"GET DOWN!" Aithne shouts over Toro's roars, she covers the back of her head with her right hand as she ducked to the nearest person to her, hoping to shield them as well.
The explosion goes off, Aithne felt herself being airborne for like three seconds before hit something landing faceup on the floor, her nose is filled with smoke, her ears rang but it faded away it hear the eery silence, followed by heavy coughing next to her. opening her eyes, ignoring the burning sting seeing the area slowly depleting of the smoky aftermath, turning her head to the source of the coughing she slowly sit up resting on her elbows.
"Y-You..cough.. you ok?" she wheezed.
"Y-Yeah," Yasmina coughed. "You?"
"Alive," Aithne replied laying her head back down on the floor. "I little more well done than I like, but alive."
"Is everyone okay?" Darius called out.
"Uh, surprisingly, yeah." Brooklynn says.
"Whoo-hoo! We did it," Kenji chuckle. "We beat.."
The sound of stones rumbling made Aithne sit up quickly, Toro drags itself out from the rock pile, heavily burnt, stream coming of its body, he snarls and whines in pain as he tries to stand up.
"Stand your ground!" Aithne exclaimed, picking up the pipe she had early, just as Toro turns towards them.
The others finding something for a weapon, standing side by side, together, ready to fight again, Toro stares at them, breathing heavily, Aithne grips the pipe tightly, her knuckles turning white, glaring at this Carno that has been nothing nut a pain in the arse.
It lets out a small roar, turning and walking away from them, they beat it, they won.
"Yeah that's what you get!" Darius cheered; everyone cheers along too. "Take that Toro!"
"And don't come back!" Aithne shouts, raising her arms in the air.
Toro lets out one last roar before leaving their sights, while still cheering.
"Doesn't get any better than that."
"Wanna bet?" Yasmina saying, pointing to the wall.
The explosion made a hole in the wall, a way out, not wasting anymore time, they head out, not caring if the sun blinded them for a moment they ran though the jungle, not long before they hear the waves of the sea, only the docks are empty, no people, no ferries, they were too late.
"They're gone," Darius broke the silence. "They're all gone."
"They'll be back for us, won't they?" Sammy wondered.
"Of course they will," Darius replied. "And until then, we've got each other. Right Mr VIP?" lightly punched the tall boy's shoulder.
"Absolutely, dino-nerd," Kenji replied.
"Hey, don't forget superstar," Brooklynn says.
"Barf," Yasmina comments, resting her arm on Sammy's shoulder, seems to be on good terms again.
They all stare out at the sea, into the horizon, after a few moments Aithne sighed.
"We better get moving," she turns are from the sea. "Probably best we don't stay out in the open too long."
"Good call fisticuffs," Darius replied.
"Lead the way Dino-Kid," she says with a smile as she ruffs his hair, making him laugh.
And so they all start heading back into the jungle, they had now idea where to start, but they will come up with a plan they always do. Aithne just caught Yasmina from tripping, nodding her thanks they keep on walking, she spots Darius falling behind, she waits for him as the others walk on. When Darius caught up to her, she places an arm around his shoulder like she would do with her brothers.
"We'll find our way home," Aithne says to him.
"I know," he replied.
They walk but stop when they felt the ground under their feet starting to shake, and faintly hear ing from behind them.
"Um Darius? What could be making that noise?"
"Will if I'm not mistaken," he looks over his shoulder as does Aithne. "That's sounds like a…"
"Stampede!"
Well that season 1 done and dusted, onward to season 2.
