Inside the Sparrow Scout Hall, Hilda wasn't feeling in the best of moods. Ever since she blew up at her brother for the ghost fiasco, he kept distancing himself from her. No matter the possible chance she could apologize to him, he made it harder to listen to her. She never thought Hilbert would be this emotionally broken from their argument. And that's not all she has to worry about. Frida hasn't been to the meetings of the Sparrow Scouts for three weeks now.
"Hilda?" David was concerned. "Are you ok?"
"David, you ever had arguments with Frida before you met me?"
David rubbed his elbow. "Uh, yeah. They were sometimes tame, and we made up with each other later. Why you ask?"
"I just think that between that what went on with us is that this isn't an easy mess we can just sweep under the rug and forget about it. Not to mention I have my own problems as well. I really did Hilbert dirty."
"That bad?" David wondered.
"Worse than you can imagine,"
Hilda was interrupted by the Raven Leader. She announces the upcoming end-of-year camping trip and badge ceremony.
"After this, let's check up on Frida."
David was doubtful. "I'm not sure if that's a good idea. She might still be pissed off at us,"
Hilda sighed. "Look, David. I know we are the last people she wants to see, but we must check up on her to make things right. I mean, the worst she can say is no!"
Hilda was getting sprayed by tear gas and hit by rakes. She yelled in pain as Frida kept assaulting her unintentionally. Soon, she realized her mistake and stopped her attack.
"Turns out that 'no' ISN'T the worst she can say," Hilda groaned in pain.
"There's nothing like a stranger danger alert from YOU to expand a gal's vocabulary!" David tried hard not to laugh.
Frida rolled her eyes as she helped Hilda up. "I'm sorry about that, I thought you were a furry rat."
"What do you mean?"
Frida rubbed her elbow. "When I was sleeping last night, I heard some noises rattling in the kitchen. I went to check it out, but whatever it was, it got away."
"Well, don't worry about that," David cleared his throat as the trio headed upstairs. "We got something to tell you. There's a camping trip for the Sparrow Scouts. That's another easy badge for you."
"Actually," Frida inhaled sharply. "I won't be attending the trip. I got errands to run."
"What the hell?" Hilda was flabbergasted. "What do you mean?"
Before anyone can respond, they heard a subtle "Boo". The three jumped in a scared manner. They turned to the source of laughter, which was Kelly. "You three should have seen the look on your faces!"
David was offended. "Piss off, hag!"
"No, no, no, it's okay, she's with me!" Frida explained the situation.
Hilda noticed something on the floor. "Hey, what's this?"
Frida and David's eyes widened with shock. David picked up the object. "It's Frida's clay troll! We made it back in the first grade!"
"Yeah. It's a shame the principal had a heart attack seeing that thing since it looked like the real deal."
Hilda didn't even hear the rest of the conversation, let alone acknowledge Kelly getting along with Frida. She couldn't get that image of a young Hilbert out of her head when they were homeschooled in the first grade. She winced when she recalled the time that she got him hurt riding on baby polar bears. It left him to lose a baby tooth because Hilda was too late to warn Hilbert about the tree that he ended up hitting.
"Uh, Hilda?" Frida's voice cleared up her thoughts. "Are you ok?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah. I was just remembering something about me when I was that age."
"We should get going," David put an arm on her shoulder. "Frida and Kelly have to do some stuff together. We don't want to keep disturbing her."
"Oh… yeah," Hilda went downstairs along with the others to exit out of Frida's house. The kids split up as they head on to their destinations.
David was taking it the hardest. As he walked back to his house, he couldn't stop scolding himself. Gah, why the hell did you do that to her, David? You made yourself look like an ass there, and now Frida is considering abandoning you! Yeah, she shouldn't have said that stuff to Hilda, but you're much to blame for this situation.
David suddenly noticed Hilbert walking in the distance. He was accompanied by Vivian and Spark. David noticed the weary look that the boy had. He decided to check up with them.
"You STILL didn't make things right with her?" Vivian was in disbelief.
"Look, this isn't as easy as you think it is," Hilbert waved his hand. "Me and Hilda fought before, but not to this extent. What she said really hurt me. I still think about it to this day."
"Well, you can't ignore her forever," Spark consoled.
"Gee, what a novel idea! Why didn't I think of that?" Hilbert sarcastically replied.
Vivian and Spark rolled their eyes just as David started to approach them. "Hey, Vivian and Spark. What's with Hilbert here?"
"He's just making himself look like a smartass again," Vivian choked.
"Nope. That's not it," Hilbert defended himself. "Just not knowing how to deal with my dilemma."
"Let me guess: Hilda hates you." David made a guess.
"You got that right," Vivian interrupted. "I got something important to say about Frida. Apparently, she's hanging out with a teen named Kelly."
"She seemed friendly," Hilbert coughed.
"I'm not sure about that," David rubbed his arm. "Frida seems like she replaced us with her."
"To be fair, Hilda's adventures usually have you and Frida's lives in danger," Spark stated. "Like that one time that Hilbert got pushed off a cliff by Trevor."
"He was trying to catch Hilda via a trap," Hilbert complained. "If anything, I'm surprised that I didn't become troll food."
"What do you suppose we do about Frida?" Vivian asked.
"I guess we can only give her space. We've done enough," David sighed. "But we have to be on the lookout for some beast. It's somewhere here in Trolberg."
"A king troll?" Spark asked.
David shook his head. "They say it's big, scary, and black!"
"So is Van Gale's criminal record. That didn't stop us from foiling her plans." Spark added.
"I'd say we go capture that beast!" Vivian suggested.
Hilbert and David couldn't believe their ears. Even Spark was flabbergasted.
"Are you drunk?!" Hilbert felt his jaw drop. "We'll get killed!"
Vivian's excitement got shot down. "Bah, you're no fun."
"What do you plan to do about your camping trip, David?" Spark asked.
"Frankly, I guess I'll go to it so I can give Hilda some emotional support, even if Frida won't make it. She might not be in the best of mood with us involved, but I got to head to the camping trip for Hilda."
Hilbert and the others waved goodbye as David left. They started walking their way to Trolberg Plaza. Vivian cleared her throat. "So, what's our plan?"
"Our?"
"Yeah. The plan that we have when we go to the camping trip and spy on Frida's new friend."
"We?" Hilbert facepalmed. "Vivi, there is no we, there is no our; it's just me and Spark. And the first thing I'm going to do is to create some invention to protect myself from that giant animal."
Vivian felt her hair drop. "You cut me deep, Hilbert. You cut me real deep right now."
Later that night, Johanna was watching a news report about the strange creature. The news reporter was serious. "They say it's a nightmare on Trolberg. A heart stopper. Several children have PTSD because of this monster. It's big, scary, and black!"
Hilda hopped on the couch and witnessed the report. "I heard about that. Perhaps the animal is just lonely and needs some support."
Johanna glared at her daughter. "Are you insane? You could get hurt out there!"
"All creatures have a reason for their wild behavior. Remember when you got mad at Twig for barking all night, only to find out he was trying to stop that crazy woman from kidnapping me?"
Johanna knew she had a point, but she remained uptight. "Look, if you happen to encounter anything dangerous in that camping trip, let me know so I can get you safe. The last thing I want is you getting hurt out there."
As the two resumed watching TV, Hilbert was in his room finishing his invention. It was something that could protect him from the beast. As he put on the finishing touches, he looked at Spark staring out the window. "Everything ok there?"
"You know, even when we moved to Trolberg here, I expected that you would be open more often."
"What are you talking about?" Hilbert asked.
"You can't just keep being locked in here doing inventions all the time. I'm grateful you created me, but the fact that you haven't made any more friends like I did is sad."
"Hey, for the record, I did make friends!" Hilbert took offense.
"Ones that you made by coincidence or by force don't count."
Hilbert just placed his tools down. "Let's just sleep for the night, I'm exhausted here."
Spark snorted as he went to sleep as well.
The next morning, Frida was watching TV with Kelly. The show they are watching now was a truth or dare type of show. The contestants were put through dangerous events such as getting mauled by bears. The lady that lost some teeth was the winner.
"This is ridiculous," Frida muttered.
"That's why it's popular," Kelly laughed. "It's the best part!"
Frida heard some knocking on the door and tried to open it, but Kelly interfered and prevented her from doing so. Frida was confused. "Uh, what's the big idea?"
"It's no one important. Just that blue haired brat,"
Frida got miffed. "That's a little rude. Hilda's not a brat."
"Really? What about when she promised you to find your book, only to fail?"
The girl felt guilty remembering that. "Look, you can't really blame her for that. She didn't know the ghost got the wrong book."
"Really?" Kelly doubted it. "I can't say you enjoyed getting harmed by elves and almost burned by a lindworm. That's nothing compared to what we got in store tonight."
Now it was Frida's time to be curious. "What are you talking about?"
Kelly decided to use her manipulation tactics. "Oh, me and my friends are planning to go on an outing some forest. You should join in."
Frida started to get some doubts. It's been a while since she went to an outing with a couple of people. Even going one with Kelly made her anxious. But she had no choice, as the teen girl ushered her to make a choice.
"Uh, hello?"
"Oh, sorry, Kelly. I dozed off. I guess I can try it out."
Kelly smiled. "Good. Don't ruin this for yourself. You got this one shot!"
Back at Hilda's apartment, Hilbert was giving Spark some modifications. This allowed the hamster to become bigger to match Twig's size. "About time this happened. I don't want to get stepped on."
"That won't happen. I made sure of it. Not even a troll would dare destroy you."
Suddenly, Hilbert heard some rustling. Upon leaping on the couch, he was disturbed to see something furry and round. It got worse when Hilbert realized that it was biting on his invention. "Hey! Get the hell away from it!"
Hilbert tried to pull it away, but the creature kept its grip on it. "It's mine! You can't have it!"
"Yeah right! When trolls fly!"
Suddenly, Hilbert and the creature got up and started pulling each other. It wasn't until they ended up going through the floor. The boy screamed until he landed on some strange room. His sight cleared, and he gasped when he noticed where he was: Nowhere Space. Hilbert read about this kind of stuff at school. It's an area around houses that certain creatures can enter. He inspected various items that were in this place before he felt some paper crumbling. The boy looked down to see that it was Hilda's science homework, which he frowned upon.
"Damn it. I let her in here again," a scruff voice spoke.
Hilbert looked at the creature. It looked like a small boy with an afro for a face. "What the hell kind of animal are you supposed be?"
"A nisse, for your information. And I don't appreciate you breaking in these places."
"You're the one that wouldn't let go of my invention!" Hilbert soon felt some biting on his leg. As he looked down, he saw another nisse bugging him. And it had Hilda's clothes. "What's your problem?"
"You're not going to steal Jellybean, bastard! If I must risk breaking in, let alone getting banished to get him back, it'll be worth it!"
Hilbert sighed as he picked up the nisse. "Why are you wearing my sister's clothes?"
"Hey, a nisse can't keep themselves warm, can they?"
The other nisse popped in. "Oh, I see what's going on. The person I met earlier is your sister Hilda."
"Yes, yes, let's not get complicated. Why are you here?"
"Well, after your mother banished me from the house for what the other nisse did, I had to bend the rules and break in myself to clear my name. Being mistaken for being invisible doesn't have its perks, you know."
The other nisse cleared their throat. "Maybe if you had helped me find Jellybean instead of slacking off in houses, you wouldn't be banished again!"
Hilbert rolled his eyes. He had no time to deal with this crap, let alone wanting to do so. He had to get back home so his mom wouldn't have more stuff to worry about. He managed to get outside of Nowhere Space, though his return was unexpected. He ended up in an alley, where he was surrounded by Shenzi and the other Marra.
"Hey, looks like we got ourselves a smartass here! Let's use him as bait!"
Hilbert was not going to enjoy this. "Oh, boy."
In the Huldrawoods, Johanna dropped off Hilda for her camping trip. As she drove back to the apartment, she had a lot on her mind. Half of her was still pissed off at Hilda for bringing a nisse home despite clear instructions to not get involved, while the other half was about the big figure she noticed on the way to the camp. Whatever it was, Johanna hoped it wouldn't go after her kids. Speaking of which, it was a while before she spoke with Hilbert since she had been focusing on Hilda lately. Johanna decided to encourage Hilbert to head on the camping trip to be with Vivian since she saw her making some s'mores there. But when she got to the house, she was surprised at the sight of a clean house. It was strange to her since neither her nor Hilda had the time to clean all of this up.
Spark came walking around with Twig. "Hey, Mom. Did you see Hilbert around?"
"Funny enough, I was gonna ask you that. But no, I haven't. Come to think of it, did he clean this place up? I could have sworn it was destroyed by a nisee I told Hilda not to bring."
"Unlikely, there would have been some small explosion if that were the case,"
Alfur came hopping on top of Spark. "I can answer that! I had some part in cleaning the place up!"
Johanna couldn't believe it. "Wait, really?"
"Well, I had to get some help from several of my elf friends. It took us over half an hour, but we managed to tidy things up!"
Johanna was impressed. "I cannot thank you enough for doing this for me. I would have been exhausted if I cleaned this place myself!"
"I don't mean to bring down your mood or anything, but do you know if Hilda and Hilbert will stop hating each other?"
This made the mother sigh. "That's the one thing I wish they would stop doing. Sibling arguments are bound to happen. But the fact that they won't even talk to each other, it's going too far. Something must be done."
"But what can be done?" Spark cried.
"I don't know," Johanna looked out the window. "I just don't know."
In another part of the woods, Frida was being walked by Kelly. They eventually got greeted by the Marra, including Shenzi. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Kelly, why the hell you brought her here?!"
"Relax, Shenzi. This is the girl me and the others planned for our new initiation."
"Your what?" Frida was flabbergasted.
"It's part of your new thing; you get to be a Marra like us!" Kelly started flying.
This made Frida's eyes widen. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. I didn't agree with this. I thought you girls were going to eat s'mores in the campfire."
"That's cliché," Shenzi scoffed. "I'm more into gossiping of what kids we cared. Like that wimp you always hang out with!"
Frida got a bit offended. "Hey, go easy on David. He gets scared, but he isn't a coward."
"If he wasn't, he should have faced off against Shenzi on his own rather than getting the brat to do it for him!" Jennifer howled.
Before any more arguing was made, they were interrupted by some bushes rustling. They found out it was Hilda and David eavesdropping.
"Well, well, well, look what the brat dragged in," Hazel laughed.
"No time for insults! A monster is about to attack us! It's big, scary, and black!" David cried.
Speaking of the devil, the bushes rustled again. Though what came out of it was a frog. The marras began laughing hysterically, embarrassing the boy.
"If it isn't my favorite victim," Shenzi flew in front of David.
"Ah, piss off!" Hilda cried. "You got no right to scare us! Especially Frida. You shouldn't force her on things like this. Come on, Frida."
As Hilda and David started to leave, Frida tried to join, but hesitated when the teen girls glared at her.
"Looks like you're the ones that should piss off," Kelly smirked. "Frida's having a blast here, and she doesn't regret it!"
She ended up flying along with Shenzi as their eyes turned green. "She's going to be one of us! One of us!"
Then the other teen girls chanted as well. "One of us! One of us!"
As Shenzi and Kelly floated around the two, David noticed yet another sad look at Frida's face. He had to let it out. "Frida, I don't understand. I know you don't want to be associated with me anymore, but why would you hang out with them? You're better than this. You always had my back since the first grade. You're my best friend. You make me less scared of everything."
Frida couldn't help but give a smile, satisfied since she knows that David isn't mad at her anymore.
"And it works. I am not scared. Especially not these bastards." David glanced at Kelly. The teen girl glared at the boy, but just as she was about to punch him, she and the others noticed something behind David as he kept talking. "What's scary about a sad bunch of creeps with nothing better to do than sit around being nasty about people behind their ass?"
Hilda grabbed David and turned him around. Everyone's eyes shrank in horror when they realized what was behind them: The Black Hound. The beast growled at everyone.
"Oh, crap." David choked.
