Hilbert was in the middle of testing out another invention. This one is shaped like a cannon, and it can fire water balloons.
"You're doing some sort of water balloon fight with Vivian?" Spark asked.
"Hell no," Hilbert took offense. "This isn't child's play. I'm making something to defend people from the trolls."
Spark rolled his eyes. "Ah, yes. Getting them wet will totally protect people."
Another voice piped in. "Ah, it seems the defenses are increasing,"
Hilbert jumped in surprise. He didn't expect to see Erik and Gerda behind him. "Don't scare me like that! I'm used to my sister giving me hearts attacks!"
"Sorry about that, chap. We are just examining your abilities based on those inventions you mentioned creating," Erik straightened his cape. "And by the looks of it, it might be a success."
The boy's eyes widened. "Really? You believe that?"
"Of course," Gerda smiled. "You have some potential to use them for the better of Trolberg. In fact, we can use someone like you."
Hilbert couldn't believe what he was hearing. Someone other than his own mother approves of his inventions. It was a dream come true. He made a warm smile as Spark started to shake him. "Please don't tell me you're going to be in a happy coma again."
Erik was surprised to see the robotic hamster. "It talks?"
Hilbert pulled himself together. "Yes, but Spark is a male. Don't call him a thing, he considers it offensive."
"We'll keep that in touch," Gerda handed the boy an envelope. "Read this when you have the time so you can think about our offer."
As the Safety Patrol people left the area, Hilbert eyed the envelope. Whatever was inside, it felt like a golden opportunity. But he had no time to admire it more because the sun is setting. When the two made it home, they were surprised to see Johanna making some waffles this late.
"I know, it's unusual for me to do this, but we must eat this before they become raw. Plus, they are taking much space in the fridge,"
Hilbert did not seem to mind this since waffles are his favorite food. Even his sister and the deerfox consumed the meal. Tontu was quite stuffed from eating his share. The group headed off to sleep in their rooms.
"I must say, that was quite the day we had saving Frida from that tiger. The panic everywhere made my heart pant!"
"Well, that's the life of an adventurer for you, Alfur," Hilda yawned as she got on her bed. "Have a good night."
"Same to you, Hilda," the elf entered inside a clock and enabled the lights. It felt like a calm home for Alfur. Ever since he moved with the family to Trolberg, he made himself a home. Plants to water, a dresser for him, a couch, portraits of Hilda and the family, you name it. Alfur even adopted a nitten that came from Hilda during the troll rock incident. But what may happen in the next morning may be shocking.
As Hilbert poured in his cereal, he felt disturbed when he heard a faint yell from his sister's room. The sight he noticed when entering was bizarre. All of Alfur's belongings were moved to the floor, including the elf himself.
"Did I get drunk again?" the elf wondered.
Hilda was confused when she noticed another elf with blue clothes. "I'm sorry, who are you?"
"I'm Alvin," the elf grunted. "This twit's replacement."
Alfur couldn't believe this. "REPLACED?! This is preposterous!"
"Why would he get replaced?" Hilbert asked out of the blue.
"It's quite simple, egghead," Alvin cleared his throat. "The Keebler elf here is no longer going to be the Trolberg Correspondent. His reports are full of jack crap. Alfur here has been making crap up, I can tell."
Alfur made a cross face while the other elf listed the adventures they had for the past few months. Hilbert couldn't help but intervene. "No way, those are real things that happened. I once almost got decapitated by an axe that some crazy weather hag tried to kill me with!"
Hilda winced as Alfur nodded. "I can still see some parts of his hair missing."
Alvin wasn't amused. "Anyway, a special delegation will arrive that day to bring his ass back where he came from. So, you better prepare."
"I guess there's no talking you out of this?" Alfur asked.
"Afraid not. You'd best get going and say your goodbyes,"
"This is bullcrap!" Hilda pounded her fist against the table. This made everything, including the elves, rumble.
"Man, this girl has issues!" Alvin felt dizzy.
Alfur gave a sad sigh as he looked out the window. He would have to leave Hilda and her family. What choice did he have?
"Alfur, you can't go," Hilda persuaded.
"I'm afraid I must, Hilda. There's nothing I can do to change their minds."
"But you got a whole life here, Alfur. Don't think of this as some workplace. You're our friend. You're even family to us!" Hilbert counterattacked.
Alfur felt emotional hearing that. "You really believe that?"
The twins nodded. "Word by word,"
Alfur wiped his tears. "How are we going to do this?"
Spark had a suggestion. "Perhaps using some sort of elf to impersonate you will get them off your ass,"
"Brilliant!"
An hour later, Alfur and the gang met up with the Bragga Family. Once the proper deal was made, a fat elf named Agnes dressed up as Alfur while the latter dressed up in different attire. "Oh, dear. Now I know why other elves don't like this type of getup."
"Let's get this over with," Hilbert grunted before the Delegation arrived. Strangely enough, only one elf seemed very cheerful to meet Alfur as opposed to the others. Hilda and Hilbert whistled, waiting for them to take the bait.
"Ah, Alfur. I see you decided to be cooperative. My name is Aloysius," the tall elf introduced himself. "And I am pleased you aren't going to refuse your dismissal."
Alvin seemed suspicious. "You look different, Alfur. Did you gain weight?"
He ended up being interrupted when the cheerful elf beamed a smile. "I can't believe that is the real Alfur! His reports are the best!"
Eventually, things went south from there. When Aloysius demanded that the paperwork be provided for the departure to be set along with the passport, the fat elf went aggressive and roared at the Delegation.
"That went well," Hilbert sarcastically commented, earning a nudge from his sister.
"Not helping, jackass,"
Alfur had to step in and stop the attack. Sadly, this meant he had to surrender his passport. One look at the sad twins and deerfox made him feel more guilty. "Hey, Aloysuis. You said that according to Alvin, my reports are full of baloney?"
"I believe so. What's your case?"
"Well, I do have one report that happens to be true. It involves an elf. Do you know what did?" Alfur smirked.
Aloysuis crossed his arms. "What?"
"RUN!" Alfur sprinted away from the Delegation.
Aloysuis was pissed. "Get that bastard!"
The Delegation (along with the Lost Clan) ended up chasing Alfur into the Lighthouse Farmers Market. Hilda and Hilbert caught up with the fiasco, and they are in disbelief. While it seems normal that there is an elf chase there, to the common man, it just seems that a ghost is vandalizing the farmer's market.
"Man, this is like that time Trevor did that food fight," Hilbert frowned.
"Except the principal blamed us for it," Hilda replied in a sour mood. "Come on, we have to help Alfur!"
Even Twig tried to land a paw to help hinder Alfur from the other elves. The wild goose chase ended at the lighthouse. Unfortunately for the Delegation and Lost Clan, they ended up being captured by Gerda, who thought they were the spirits that haunted the famers market. Hilda felt her stomach punched. "Uh, what are you going to do with that?"
"We'll decide when we reach that point. I have to investigate," Gerda noticed Hilbert before dashing off to Safety Patrol Headquarters. "Oh, hello there, Hilbert. Hope you get a chance to consider the offer we made yesterday."
Hilda got suspicious. "Offer?"
"It's a long story. I'll tell you later,"
"We must organize a plan to get those elves back!" Alvin popped in. "Here's what we do: get some more elves, use a ladder, and find a rope to—"
"We don't have time for this crap!" Hilda cried. "Come on!"
The group headed to the headquarters of Safety Patrol. Inside, the Lost Clan and Delegation were figuring out some ways to escape. However, the elf that wanted to meet Alfur was not helping matters. She was writing reports of this "adventure".
"Adeline, wake up!" Aloysuis was cross. "You're not in a fairy tale! This is real life! We are going to be puppy chow if you don't take this seriously."
Adeline lowered her book sadly. "Yes, sir,"
Hilda and Hilbert snuck around with the elves and Twig on the building. Hilbert looked around for any guards. "Seems they are all inside the place. There's no use barging in,"
"What do we do, then?" Hilda wanted a solution.
Before Hilbert could answer, they heard a loud yell. "Ah, that feels so good!"
The group hid in a corner as they noticed that it was Erik Ahlberg stretching.
"Time to patrol around the block. We need to interrogate the spirits that haunted that farmers market."
Hilda was getting nervous. They would be caught and there would be no way to save the captured elves. That is until her brother had an idea. "You go on ahead. I'll distract Alhberg,"
"Are you sure you can do this?"
"Yes, just go before anyone else notices!"
The brat nodded as she and the others scurried over the windows. Hilbert managed to leap in front of the Safety Patrol Captain. "Uh, greetings there!"
Erik was surprised to see the boy pop out of nowhere. "What are you doing here, lad? This is Safety Patrol territory. We aren't open to Trolberg citizens."
Hilbert tried to think of a good excuse. "Uh, I was chased here by some vitra. I was wondering if you can give some advice to deal with them."
Erik assumed it was an opportunity for him to show off. "My boy, it is quite simple. You must come equipped with some chainsaw."
The boy gulped, recalling that night when Hilda almost got killed.
"You ever made an invention for that occasion?"
Hilbert pondered. "Well, there was a weed hacker thing I made, but Mom made me not use it since I accidentally caused some damage on the field."
"Ah, mothers. They just don't know better," Erik continued. "It takes risks to make actions. Everyone should understand that."
"You've been a rebel as a kid, were you?" Hilbert asked.
"Oh, I was. I seek out for trouble, the family line was on my blood,"
Eventually, Alfur and the others managed to rescue the Delegation and Lost Clan. They were relieved that they made it out alive, especially Adeline, who blushed when Alfur caught her from falling. Despite the adventure, Alfur still had to leave. Hilda felt her stomach drop. "Alfur…"
The elf gave a sad smile to his friend. "It's ok, Hilda. You go on have a nice life with your family,"
"But… you're my family, too!" Hilda shed some tears.
Alfur couldn't stop himself from doing the same.
"Wait! I got something to say!" Alvin fell from a pigeon.
"ALVIN!" Alfur cried before he ran to catch him. Luckily, they were unharmed.
"Uh, yes," the elf poured sand of his hat. "As you recall, Alfur's reports was considered a bunch of crap that made no sense. However, with the amount of chaos we went through today, it is without a doubt that they are not far off. I would like to have confirmation that Alfur will NOT be leaving his post. He shall remain here to resume his reports."
Alfur couldn't believe his ears. He felt full of joy even when Twig started nuzzling his face. Hilbert felt squished when Hilda gave him a cheerful hug. As the Delegation started to leave, Adeline approached Alfur. "This has been one hell of a day. Possibly the best adventure I had. My notes are filled with them!"
Alfur chuckled. "Going to need make a report about that. By any chance, you want to co-author it with me?"
Adeline felt like she was on top of the world. Alvin coughed. "If you like, you can stay here with Alfur to help him with these reports."
Both elves blushed. Hilda noticed and made a sly smile. "Looks like an elf has got himself a keeper."
The two elves were embarrassed and tried to claim otherwise. Hilbert made a snarky remark. "Two elves about to make it to the naughty list, ho ho ho."
Alfur and Adeline covered their faces with their hats, not being able to handle the embarrassment.
"Alright, let's go home. But where will Adeline go?" Hilda wondered.
"Oh, I know the proper place for her to stay at, but for now, let's just head back home before it turns dark out."
The group made it back to the apartment. Adeline was in awe. "Wow, this is a huge place for elves."
"Well, there's more than just an elf living here. I live with three humans, a deerfox, a nisse, and a mechanical pet," Alfur explained. "Let's just say I got the good life."
Hilbert snuck Adeline and Alfur back in his sister's room while Hilda spoke with Johanna about their day.
"Well, that explains a lot. I suppose Frida didn't mind you flaking on her for that hike on the park?"
Hilda knew she had to come up with a reason to make her fib more believable. "Yeah. I ended up dodging a bullet. It was raining in that area."
"Uh-huh," Johanna ate her funnel cake.
"Man, this funnel cake is worth to die for!" Tontu exclaimed.
Eventually, when dessert was finished, everyone headed back to their bedrooms to get some shut eye. Alfur led the other elf inside the clock, and she was amazed.
"Wow, you were not kidding!" Adeline was in awe. "This is like the ultimate house for an elf!"
"You can say that." Alfur noticed his nitten. "Oh, and this is Peppercorn. I found a nitten from Hilda."
Adeline petted the animal. "Nice to meet you, nitten. Do you want this ball of yarn?"
The nitten began playing it and fooled around. Somehow, Alfur and Adeline were tied up together by the yarn, causing both to blush.
"Well, looks like these elves couldn't keep track of their reports, how naughty," Hilbert raised his eyebrows.
Hilda tried hard not to laugh. Twig rolled his eyes as he curled into a sleeping position. Eventually, everyone got settled to sleep. Hilbert headed back to his room while Hilda went to her bed. Thankfully, there is a spare bed for Adeline to sleep on.
"Good night, Adeline," Alfur yawned.
"Good night, Alfur,"
