The flames hissed gently in the center of their camp, throwing shadows on Sasuke's face as he sat on guard. He was meant to be watching out for their environment, but his eyes kept slipping back to the girl lying beside him.
Sakura's head jerked a little to one side, and she trembled in sleep. With a soft sigh, Sasuke shrugged off his cloak and covered her shoulders with it.
She shifted, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Thanks, Sasuke-kun…" she mumbled drowsily.
He stiffened. "You're awake?"
"Mm… barely." Her fingers curled into the fabric of his cloak.
Sasuke looked away, pretending not to notice the warmth spreading in his chest.
He would never admit it, but he didn't mind staying up if it meant keeping her safe.
