Pika Pikachu Chupika Pikachu Chu(The Bond Between Trainer and Pokemon)
The Pokegang have awoken from their sleep and are preparing to go about today's events. The four of them are heading down the hallway towards the Pokemon Centre's lobby. Pikachu is riding on Ash's shoulder while Misty is holding Oddish
"So it's a Fire tournament huh." Alex says excitedly, "Charmeleon and I are gonna absolutely dominate."
"Don't be so certain Alex." Brock says, "Vulpix and I have a pretty good shot."
Ash doesn't say anything, instead just lost in his own thoughts
"Hey Ash are you ok?" Misty asks
"Yeah this is usually the part where you scream about how great you are or something." Alex says
"Hmm oh sorry were you guys talking to me?" Ash asks
"Uh yeah." Alex replies
"What are you thinking about?" Misty asks
"Oh I was just thinking about my egg." Ash says. He pats his backpack, "I just wonder when it might hatch."
"It'll probably take awhile." Brock says, "You know you could always leave your egg at a daycare and have them hatch it for you."
Ash shakes his head, "No I want to look after it myself."
They enter the lobby. It's generally quite empty besides Nurse Joy behind the counter. Brock prepares to make a beeline for her but Misty grabs him before he could get a chance
"Not today Brock." Misty says annoyed
"Aw come on." Brock whines
Ash's stomach growls, "I'm hungry. Let's have breakfast."

The doors to the Pokemon Centre open and Damien and Feraligatr stroll in
"Hey you don't have to apologize. I'm the one who needs to remember that you're not as young as you used to be." Damien says to his Pokemon
Feraligatr!
"Damien!" Ash exclaims. Damien glances over at the sound of his voice
"Oh hey guys."
Damien has joined the rest of the group for breakfast
"So you already have six badges. That's impressive." Damien says
"Well I try." Ash says proudly, "How about you?"
"I've gotten three so far." Damien shows off a Boulder Badge, Cascade Badge and Thunder Badge
"Oh hey you battled my father." Brock says
"And my sisters." Misty says
"Oh so you're the Pokemon breeder." Damien says, "Your dad mentioned you quite a bit."
"He did?" Brock asks surprised
"Yeah he said something about how he was proud of his son following his dreams. To be honest I wasn't really listening." Damien says
"He said that?" Brock says genuinely touched
"And I'm guessing your sisters are the Sensational Sisters?" Damien points at Misty
"Yep that's them." Misty replies
"This is for you." Damien hands her a bill. She stares at it horrified
"Your sisters had me clean their pool and then refused to pay me." Damien says
"I...I...I'm going to kill them!" She yells angrily
Damien chuckles, "Relax I'm kidding. I admit they kind of suckered me into it."
"It's because of how beautiful they are isn't it?" Alex asks causing Misty to hit him over the head. Damien blushes
"So Damien what are you doing in Sunnytown?" Ash asks
"I'm passing through on my way to Fuchsia City." Damien says, "I was just getting some training in before I get going."
"So you're not entering the Elemental league tournament?" Ash asks a little disappointed
"Afraid not. I'm falling a bit behind on my badges quest so I have to keep moving." Damien replies, "After Fuchsia I'm heading straight for Celadon and then heading for Saffron before looping around to get to Viridian."
"I wonder if the Viridian Gym leader is back yet?" Alex mutters to himself
"Would you be open to a practice battle before you leave?" Ash asks
"Sorry Ash but my Pokemon need to rest. I want them in top shape by the time I challenge Koga." Damien says
"How about just giving some advice then?" Alex asks, "I mean you have way more travel experience than us so I'm sure you could help in some way."
Damien shrugs, "I guess but I don't know how much help I'll be. I don't have the connection to your Pokemon that I have with mine."
Damien has followed the gang outside so that they could introduce him to all their Pokemon
"Come on out everybody!" Ash tosses all his pokeballs and Pidgeotto, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Haunter and Primeape pop out
Pidgeotto takes flight while Bulbasaur immediately starts napping. Haunter starts playing pranks on Primeape who keeps trying to hit the Ghost but failing. Charmander and Squirtle are just having a nice chat
"They all seem colourful." Damien says
Primeape! Primeape!
"Oh boy. Pikachu get in there and calm down Primeape down." Ash says worried
Pikachu rushes over to Haunter and Primeape
Pika! Pika! Pikachu! Pi-
Primeape punches Pikachu who responds by electrocuting Primeape and Haunter
Primeapeeeee!
Haunter!
"Pikachu!" Ash yells
"Alright here's my team." Alex tosses his pokeballs and Charmeleon, Vaporeon, Parasect, Gyarados, Machop, Porygon, Hypno and Rhyhorn pop out
"Oh cool you have a Porygon." Damien says
"Yeah I...wait how do you know what a Porygon is?" Alex asks
"Hmm oh these things are all the rage in Johto. A bunch of them got imported there last year." Damien says
" 'A bunch of..' You mean it's not a one-of-a-kind Pokemon!" Alex yells shocked
"No. They're actually becoming quite common. Whoever invented them has figured out how to max-produce them." Damien comments
Alex slumps over depressed. Vaporeon pats him on the head
Vaporeon Vaporeon(There there)
Damien glances at the rest of Alex's team. Machop is busy striking poses, Parasect is once again trying to eat herself, Hypno has taken a nap and Charmeleon is standing by diligently. The real issue is Gyarados and Rhyhorn who are glaring at each other
"Those two don't seem to like each other."
"Hmm. Hey Rhyhorn stop picking a fight with Gyarados!" Alex yells
Rhyhorn scoffs and charges towards Gyarados who fires a Water Gun knocking Rhyhorn out
"Gyarados what the hell!" Alex yells
Rarrr(He pissed me off)
"We seriously need to get your temper under control." Alex says annoyed
"Alright my turn. Go-" Misty is about to toss her pokeballs when Psyduck pops out
Psyduck?
"Psyduck you have to wait for me to call you!" Misty yells. She sighs and tosses the rest of her Pokeballs, "Go my steadies!"

Horsea!
"I remember your Starmie." Damien says
Feraligatr heads over and shakes Starmie's fin
Tentacool glances over at Horsea who is balancing on the ground since it can't move on land

He knocks Horsea over

"And finally my Pokemon!" Brock yells

Vaporeon looks over at Vulpix. She walks over to her
"It looks like Vaporeon wants to make friends with Vulpix." Brock says
Vaporeon looks Vulpix up and down
Vaporeon(I've seen better)
Vulpix responds by firing a Flamethrower at Vaporeon which obviously doesn't do much
Vaporeon(You know I kind of like you)
"Wow. Uh your Pokemon are all..." Damien struggles to think of the right word, "...Weird."
Everyone slumps over
"That's reassuring." Misty says depressed
"That's not a bad thing." Damien points out, "It just means you'll have a more unique bond with them than other trainers. If every Pokemon and trainer acted the exact same way then there would be nothing special about them. We'd all battle the same, we'd all react the same. The more unique your Pokemon and your battling style is, the harder it is for your opponent to predict your next move."
"That makes sense." Alex says
"Take Feraligatr over there. I've known him since I was a kid. He used to be my dad's Pokemon." Damien explains, "But when I started my journey he was passed on to me. Because of that unique bond we have our battle style is a lot different from trainers who started with a Totodile. To them Totodile was that baby Pokemon that grew up into a strong Feraligatr. To me Feraligatr's always been an older wiser Pokemon with lots of experience."
Feraligatr nods
"You're right." Ash says, "It's all about the bonds with our Pokemon. And that's why I want to hatch my Dratini egg all by myself."
Brock nods. Damien looks at Ash confused, "You have a Dratini egg?"
"Oh yeah you see there was this bomb and-"
The next day Ash, Brock and Alex have lined up with the other contestants for the Sunnytown Fire tournament. Misty is sitting in the stands with Pikachu and Oddish
"Welcome to the Sunnytown Fire tournament!" The Announcer yells, "We have sixteen contestants here today ready to prove themselves!"
Charmander is standing next to Ash. He nods in agreement
Charmander(I will prove myself)
Brock is brushing Vulpix's tails while the Announcer explains the rules, "Try not to exert yourself too much Vulpix."
Vulpix!
"We're ready for this Charmeleon." Alex says
Char Charmeleon
"And we'll now begin our first round matches!" The Announcer yells
Charmander, Charmeleon and Vulpix all easily make it through the first round. Brock is now battling a trainer named Cal and his Arcanine
"Vulpix use Fire Spin!" Brock yells
Vulpix fires the attack which starts surrounding Arcanine
"Arcanine get out of there!" Cal orders
Arcanine suddenly leaps over the flames causing the crowd to gasp
"That's some jumping power." Brock says shocked
Arcanine stares down at Vulpix whose eyes widen in fear
"Don't worry Vulpix. We can take it. Use Flamethrower!" Brock yells
Vulpix fires the Flamethrower hitting Arcanine...who absorbs the attack
"Wow Arcanine easily absorbs Vulpix's Flamethrower attack!" The Announcer yells
"How is that possible?" Ash asks confused
"It must be some ability." Alex mutters
Brock stares at the Arcanine. (It must be Flash Fire. Vulpix has the same ability.)
"Arcanine Crunch!"
Arcanine's fangs start glowing and it bites down on Vulpix
Vulpix!
Vulpix faints
"Ah Vulpix no!" Brock yells
"Vulpix is unable to battle! The winner of the match is Cal!" The Announcer yells
The crowd cheers loudly. Brock cradles Vulpix in his arms, "Vulpix I'm so sorry."
"I can't believe how powerful that Arcanine is." Misty says to Pikachu

"I'm sure Ash can handle it." Misty replies unsure
Arcanine stands proudly above it's fallen opponent, not a single scratch on it. Ash pulls out his pokedex and scans it
Arcanine the Legendary Pokemon. A Fire type. Arcanine is known for its high speed. It is said to be capable of running over 6,200 miles in a single day and night. The fire that blazes wildly within this Pokémon's body is its source of power. Arcanine is the evolved form of Growlithe. This Arcanine is Male
"One of us is going to have to battle it." Alex says
"We can take it Alex." Ash says confidently
"I admire your confidence sometimes." Alex rolls his eyes
"We have reached the semifinals! The next matchups are Ash Ketchum vs Shawn and Alex Martin vs Cal!" The Announcer yells
"Of course." Alex says deadpan
Charmeleon and Arcanine are preparing to battle. The sky is covered by grey clouds
"Alright Charmeleon we can't use Fire attacks since that Arcanine will just absorb them." Alex explains, "So we need to focus on other attacks and hope we can wear it down."
Charmeleon nods
"Battle begin!" The referee yells
"Charmeleon use-" Alex is about to command when Cal interrupts
"Arcanine Extreme Speed now!"
Arcanine speeds towards Charmeleon so fast that you could barely see it move. It slams into Charmeleon knocking the Pokemon to the ground
"Ah!" Alex yells
"That's fast." Misty says shocked
"Now Bite!" Cal yells
Arcanine bites down onto Charmeleon's throat
Charmeleon!
Charmeleon thrashes around and tries to slash at Arcanine who applies more pressure. Alex watches in shock
"Alex do something!" Ash yells
Charmeleon passes out
"Charmeleon is unable to battle! The winner of the match is Cal!" The referee yells
"And another easy victory for Cal!" The Announcer yells, "With that we have our final match determined! Cal vs Ash!"
The crowd cheers loudly. Brock, Misty, Pikachu and Oddish just watch stunned. Alex stares at Charmeleon in shock
Cal scoffs, "Next time train your Pokemon better." Him and Arcanine walk off
"Charmeleon..."
He feels a hand on his shoulder and he glances over to Ash
"Alex are you ok?" Ash asks
Alex shakes his head to snap him out of his daze, "Yeah I'm fine."
He returns Charmeleon and wanders off by himself. Ash watches him concerned. He feels something wet splash on him and glances up to see it's starting to rain
"We'll have to postpone the final match until the rain clears!" The Announcer yells
The Pokegang are sitting inside of the Pokemon Centre's lobby. They're gathered around one of the tables. Pikachu and Oddish are busy playing on the floor. Alex is staring at the table
"Cheer up Alex. It was just one match." Misty says
"I'm fine." Alex replies
"You don't look fine." Brock says
"Well I am so stop bothering me." Alex raises his voice
"There's no need to be rude." Misty says angrily, "We're just trying to help."
Alex takes a breath, "I said I'm fine. I don't need any help."
Alex storms away
"What's with him?" Misty asks Ash
Ash rubs his hand along his face, "He doesn't like getting sad."
Brock looks at him confused, "What do you mean?"
"He'd rather be mad than sad. He's been like this for a few years now." Ash explains
"Well if he's gonna be mad at least don't take it out on us." Misty mutters annoyed
"He'll apologize in a little while." Ash replies. He glances out the window, "He's usually better at keeping his temper under control."
"Has he lashed before?" Brock asks
"Not at me." Ash replies, "But him and Gary had a big fight once. Gary had already started acting like a jerk at this point and him and I were arguing. Alex wasn't in a good headspace at the time and he lashed out at Gary. They apologized to each other afterwards but they've never been as close since then."
Alex is inside the room. He stares out the window where he can see Cal training his Arcanine in the rain. He grabs his pokeball and calls out Charmeleon
Charmeleon!
Alex bends down and rubs Charmeleon's head, "You ok buddy?"
Charmeleon nods
"I'm glad. I'm sorry I let Arcanine do that to you. I should have forfeited..." Alex trails off
Charmeleon pats his shoulder
Char Char Charmeleon
"We'll get them back someday. I promise."
Cal enters the Pokemon Centre with Arcanine trotting behind him. They are both soaked. Ash, Misty, Brock and Pikachu watch them from the corner of the room
"Has he been training out there this whole time?" Misty asks
"He must have." Brock comments
The two of them head straight to the bedrooms
"He didn't even leave Arcanine with Nurse Joy." Misty says surprised
"I get the feeling he doesn't really care what shape his Pokemon is in." Brock replies angrily
Ash stares ahead determined, "There's no way I'm losing to him."
The next day the sun is shining brightly in the sky. Ash and Cal are standing on the battlefield while the crowd cheers excitedly. Alex is sitting next to Misty and Brock near the front row. He has his eyes on Cal
"Alex are you ok?" Brock asks
"Yeah I'm fine. Sorry about yesterday." Alex replies
Brock pats his shoulder
"We can finally begin the Final match of the Sunnytown Fire type tournament!" The Announcer yells, "In the red corner we have Ash from Pallet Town!"
The crowd cheers
"And in the green corner we have Cal from Viridian CIty!"
The crowd also cheers
"Both trainers send out your Pokemon!"
"I choose Charmander!" Ash tosses his pokeball and Charmander pops out
Charmander!
"Go Arcanine!" Cal tosses his Pokeball and Arcanine pops out. It lets out a bark
The referee raises both flags, "Battle begin!"
"Arcanine Extreme Speed now!" Cal yells
Arcanine speeds towards Charmander, although it's movements seem a bit more sluggish than yesterday
"Charmander Flamethrower!" Ash yells
Charmander fires the Flamethrower which Arcanine absorbs
"Ash what are you doing!" Misty yells
Ash rubs his head sheepishly
"It seems young Ketchum has forgotten that Arcanine can absorbs fire attacks!" The Announcer yells, "That maybe a vital mistake!"
Arcanine leaps at Charmander
"Charmander quick do something!" Ash yells
Charmander spins around and throws some Ember from it's tail directly into Arcanine's eyes. Arcanine collapses to the ground and howls in pain
"What the hell!" Cal yells
"An unconventional move!" The Announcer yells, "Apparently Flash Fire does not work if you target the opponent's eyes directly!"
"Uh nice going Charmander." Ash says a little stunned, "Follow it up with Scratch!"
Charmander rushes forward and tries to scratch Arcanine but it dodges and bites down on Charmander's arm
Char!
"And Arcanine gets a hold of Charmander!" The Announcer yells
Arcanine pushes itself back to it's feet and applies more pressure to Charmander's arm
Charmander! Char!
Charmander is driven to it's knees as it desperately tries to break free
"Charmander no!" Ash yells
Cal watches with a smirk on his face, "Apply more pressure Arcanine!"
Arcanine's teeth sink further into Charmander's arm who screams in pain
"This is bad." Brock says
"Poor Charmander." Misty says
"Come on Ash. Think of something!" Alex yells
Pikapi!
Ash is trying to think but his mind is currently in panic mode. Charmander is screaming as Arcanine continues ripping into his flesh
"I don't know I don't know." Ash mutters to himself
"Enough." Cal commands and Arcanine lets Charmander go. The Flame Pokemon collapses to the ground clutching it's arm
"Cal calls off the attack!" The Announcer yells, "But how come?"
"This battle is over." Cal says, "Call back your Pokemon."
"No way!" Ash yells, "We can still win this!"
Cal scoffs, "Your Pokemon is pathetic."
Charmander's eyes widen
Char...(Pathetic...)
Flashback
Charmander is knocked back by a Water Gun. He slams into the ground hard
"Get up you pathetic Pokemon!" Damian yells at him
Char...Charmander...
Charmander tries to get back to his feet
"This is just sad." Damian's opponent says, "Poliwag finish it off."
Poliwag fires another Water Gun knocking Charmander out
Charmander is following after Damian
"Get lost already!" Damian yells
Charmander keeps following him though. Damian growls in frustration
"What do I have to do to make this clear!" Damian turns towards him, "You're weak! You're pathetic! I don't want you!"
Damian turns and starts walking away but Charmander still follows him
"Enough of this!" Damian pulls out Charmander's Pokeball and stomps on it breaking it
"You're free! Now go away!" Damian runs off
Charmander...
Charmander stares at the broken pokeball
Charmander Char
He follows after Damian
"Charmander sit on this rock and wait for me." Damian orders
Charmander obeys
"Good. I'll be back to fetch you in a few hours." Damian walks off leaving Charmander behind.
Time passes with no sign of Damian but Charmander keeps on waiting. He lays down tiredly. His tail flame is starting to weaken but he keeps on waiting
"Why is there a giant rock in the middle of nowhere?" Charmander hears a voice. He sits up and sees four trainers as well as a Pikachu

Flashback ends
Charmander starts trying to force himself up
"Charmander is not giving up!" The Announcer yells, "This Pokemon may battle until it is physically unable to continue!"
Ash watches Charmander. He raises his pokeball, "Charmander return!"
The beam hits Charmander but he resists being recalled
"Charmander I said return!" Ash shouts
"It seems Charmander is refusing to obey his trainer's commands!" The Announcer yells, "He wants to keep fighting!"
The crowd is watching anxiously
"Why isn't Charmander listening?" Misty asks Brock
"It must be a pride thing or something." Brock says, "Charmander doesn't want to fail Ash."
Cal watches the whole thing annoyed, "You're a terrible trainer. You can't even command your own Pokemon."
Charmander's tail flame suddenly grows much bigger
"Charmander?" Ash lowers the pokeball
Charmander growls at Arcanine and suddenly rushes at it
"Charmander don't attack!" Ash yells
Charmander starts biting and slashing at Arcanine in a rage
"Charmander has completely snapped!" The Announcer yells
Arcanine bites Charmander but all this seems to do is piss the Pokemon off more. Charmander's tail flame grows even stronger
Charmander! Char!
Charmander slashes Arcanine across the face
"Arcanine fall back!" Cal yells and Arcanine leaps backwards
"Charmander stop!" Ash yells
Charmander rushes towards Arcanine who leaps out of the way
"What's happening to Charmander?" Misty asks worried
"It's Rage." Brock explains, "Charmander's anger has consumed it and it's gonna keep attacking until it either calms down, is knocked out, or defeats it's opponent."
Arcanine once again dodges Charmander. Although it's starting to get tired
Arcanine...
"Keep moving!" Cal yells, "And use a Flamethrower!"
Arcanine jumps into the air and fires Flamethrower at Charmander who shrugs off the damage. Arcanine lands on the ground and collapses onto it's hind legs
"Arcanine seems to be exhausted! I don't know if it can keep this up!" The Announcer yells
"Keep moving!" Cal yells
Arcanine tries to jump but can't muster up the strength. Charmander pounces onto it and starts clawing at it. Arcanine howls in pain
"Charmander has gotten the upperhand!" The Announcer yells
Arcanine faints
"Arcanine is unable to battle! The winner of the match is Ash!" The referee yells
The crowd cheers
"Bullshit!" Cal yells
Charmander steps away from Arcanine confused
Charmander?
Ash runs over and hugs Charmander
"It's ok Charmander. You won."
"And that's the end of the tournament!" The Announcer yells. He approaches Ash with the fire symbol, "Here you go Ash Ketchum. As evidence of your victory."
Ash takes the symbol, "Thank you."
He stares at the symbol conflicted
Cal returns Arcanine, "I'll deal with you later."
He stomps away
The Pokegang are leaving Sunnytown
"I hope we never run into that guy again." Misty says
"I do." Alex replies, "I have a score to settle."
Ash fiddles with Charmander's pokeball, "Do you think Charmander is alright?"
"I'm sure he's fine Ash." Brock says reassuringly, "The battle rage just got to him was all."
Ash nods, "I guess yeah."
Charmander is resting inside his pokeball, dreaming about becoming stronger
