Alex: Ash something looks different with you
"Ash": What do you mean Alex?
Alex: The fact that your hair is blue
"Ash": I uh dyed it
Alex: And your eyes are a brighter shade than normal
"Ash": Contact lenses
Alex: And your eyebrows are huge
"Ash": Hey!
Alex: Just give it up already
"Ash": You're no fun
The fake Ash rips off her disguise revealing Duplica
Duplica: I just wanted to be goofy
Alex: Can we just start the chapter already?
Duplica: Ditto's Mysterious Mansion!
The Pokegang are travelling along Route 19. Brock is reading over a map, "You see this route ultimately leads to Matcha City. Once we get there we can get a ferry to take us to Cinnabar Island."
Misty glances at the map, "It's so far away though. We're going to be walking for days, maybe even weeks."
"Don't worry there's a couple of small towns along the way that we can stop at. The closet is Stone Town. It's at the foot of Evolution Mountain." Brock explains
"That sounds cool. What is it?" Ash asks
"That's where most of the evolution stones come from." Brock explains, "There's a whole bunch buried around there."
Ash takes out his Thunder Stone. Pikachu sees it and hides. Ash packs the stone away and Pikachu comes out of hiding
"I wonder if we could pick up a few." Alex ponders
A storm suddenly rolls in and it starts pouring
Pika!
"Where did this storm come from!" Ash yells
They take off running to try and find shelter
"This is why we should have Pokemon Centres spread all throughout the region!" Alex yells
"Look there's a mansion over there!" Ash points ahead and they rush over
"I don't like the look of it." Misty says as she looks it over
"Now's not the time to be picky." Alex replies and they head inside
The place is dark, no light other than what comes through the windows. There's no sign of life either
"Hello?" Ash yells, "Sorry to just barge in but we need shelter from the storm!"
They look around the room. There's a stage with closed curtains nearby. They approach it and see a giant sign above it
" 'Imite House.' " Alex reads
"This must have been some kind of theatre." Brock theorizes, "I guess it's abandoned though."
"Well since there's nobody around we might as well wait out the storm." Ash suggests
"Good idea." Misty says
Pikachu
They turn towards Pikachu and are shocked to see him facing another Pikachu. This one's back is turned to them
"Two Pikachu!" Ash shouts confused
"I wonder where it came from." Alex says
The two Pikachu are imitating each other flawlessly
"So cute!" Misty squeels. She rushes over and picks up the new Pikachu, "Hi there!"
She turns it around to face her and screams horrified. Instead of having a normal Pikachu's face, this one has two black dots for eyes and a line for a mouth. She drops it in shock
"What's wrong with it!"
Ash, Brock and Alex inspect the Pikachu closely
"Hmm maybe it's a new kind of Pikachu." Brock says
"Whatever it is, I want it." Alex says
"No fair I saw it first." Ash replies
Ash and Alex glare at each other
"Pikachu Thunderbolt!" Ash yells
"Cheater!" Alex yells
Pikachu fires a Thunderbolt at the new Pikachu who fires a Thunderbolt back. The two attacks hit each other in the air. Ash tosses a pokeball towards the second Pikachu when another pokeball flies out and knocks his back
"Ah! Alex!" Ash yells
"It wasn't me!" Alex defends himself, "It came from that direction."
Alex points to an open door where someone is peaking at them from the next room
"Come out where we can see you!" Ash yells
The person exits the room keeping their head down. To everyone's shock this stranger is dressed exactly like Ash, the only difference is their hair is coloured blue instead of black
"It's your evil doppelganger!" Alex yells
"I thought Ash was the evil one." Misty responds
"No it's not a doppelganger. She's a girl." Brock replies
"How can you tell?" Misty asks
"Men's intuition." Brock replies
"Who are you!" Ash yells
"Tell me who you are." The girl replies in a flawless imitation of Ash's voice
"This is kind of freaking me out." Alex says
"I'm Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town." Ash answers
"Duplica." The girl looks up at them and returns to her normal voice, "From the House of Imite."
"As in imitate? Is that why you look like me?" Ash asks
"That's right." Duplica giggles
"You're right Brock. She is a girl." Misty says
"Yes but she might be a little young for me." Brock ponders
"You're sad." Misty deadpans
"Aww it still hasn't gotten over that habit." Duplica approaches the strange Pikachu. The Pikachu starts glowing and transforms into a Ditto
Ditto!
"It's a Ditto!" The Pokegang yell shocked
Ash takes out his Pokedex and scans it
Ditto the Transform Pokemon. A Normal type. Capable of copying an enemy's genetic code to instantly transform itself into a duplicate of the enemy. Ditto has no known evolutions. Ditto are genderless
Misty bends down and starts petting the Ditto, "Squishy."
"Wow a Pokemon like that can transform into anything." Alex says amazed
"Yes but it's face stayed the same." Brock says, "When it transforms shouldn't it be able to change completely?"
Duplica looks down sadly, "Yeah it still can't change it's face."
"But it's the only Pokemon that can transform like that right?" Ash asks, "Or are there others?"
Duplica looks up happily, "Nope. Ditto's one of a kind."
Alex checks his Pokedex
The only attack Ditto knows is Transform
"So the only thing it can do is transform into other Pokemon? It has no attacks of it's own?"
"You can't have the fun of teaching it different attacks? That's kind of boring." Ash says
"Boring!" Duplica sounds angry, "Ha! Well that's what everyone says when they don't understand Ditto's real power."
She smirks at Ash
"It's real power?" Ash asks confused
"Let's have a little match. Then you'll understand Ashy-boy."
Ash's eyes widen, "Ashy-boy!" He glares at her, "Fine you're on!"
A spotlight shines onto the stage where Ash and Duplica are about to battle. Alex, Misty, Brock and Pikachu are sitting in the stands watching. Misty and Alex are eating a big tub of popcorn
"Ash isn't thinking again." Misty says annoyed
"She pushed his Gary button." Alex explains, "Surefire way to mess him up."
"I choose to use my Ditto ofcourse." Duplica points at her Ditto who slides onto the battlefield
"I won't lose to some cheap copycat! I choose Bulbasaur!" Ash tosses his pokeball and Bulbasaur pops out
Bulbasaur!
Ash turns his cap backwards to show he's serious. Duplica smirks and does the same thing, "Ditto use Transform!"
Ditto starts glowing and transforms into Bulbasaur, however it's face stays the same
Bulba Bulbasaur?(What's wrong with it's face?)
"Bulbasaur Razor Leaf!" Ash yells and Bulbasaur fires the leaves towards Ditto
"Ditto Vine Whip!" Duplica yells
Ditto shoots some vines out of it's back and knocks the leaves out of the air
"Ah!" Ash yells
"Now Ditto restrain Bulbasaur!"
Ditto wraps it's vines around Bulbasaur and lifts the Pokemon into the air. Bulbasaur struggles to break free
Bulbasaur!
"Have you had enough yet? Ash-boy?"
Ash watches as Ditto squeezes Bulbasaur, "Alright I understand...I give up."
Ditto lets go of Bulbasaur who slams into the ground
Saur...
Ditto transforms back to normal
Ditto Ditto
"How could the real thing lose?" Ash mumbles to himself
Duplica is showing off all her costumes
"Wow you have a lot of outfits." Misty says
"Yep. I need these to do my impressions." Duplica explains. She grabs a Nurse Joy outfit and puts it on. She looks almost exactly like Nurse Joy
"Don't worry I'll take good care of it." She says in a Nurse Joy impression
She then changes into an Officer Jenny outfit
"My name is Jenny and you're under arrest for Pokemon poaching."
"The resemblance is uncanny." Alex says amazed
"Yes but she doesn't capture the more adult charm of the real Joy and Jenny." Brock says
"With all these costumes I can imitate just about anybody." She grins and grabs a few items. She goes and changes into them and comes out dressed like Misty. Duplica giggles in a way that perfectly matches Misty's voice
"Wow." Misty says amazed
"Yeah she's really good." Alex says
Ash is staring out the window pondering his defeat. Brock approaches him
"Don't be so down Ash. That Ditto's powers are unbeatable."
"I wouldn't go that far." Alex comments, "Ditto's great but unbeatable? There's a way to counter it, you just have to figure it out"
"I just can't believe I lost to a fake." Ash mumbles
"Don't think of it as a fake Ash. Ditto battled like a real Bulbasaur." Misty says
"If anything I'm more impressed with all the knowledge Duplica has." Brock states
"Knowledge?" Ash asks confused
"Think about it. To use Ditto effectively you have to have knowledge on all the attacks that your opponent's Pokemon knows. Otherwise you would just mindlessly copy your opponent's attacks. Like how Duplica used Vine Whip instead of Razor Leaf." Brock explains
Duplica, who has changed into her normal clothes, and Ditto head over to them
"You have a good point Brock." Ash says thoughtfully, "It's more than just imitation."
"I bet Duplica would make a great Pokemon master." Misty says
"No way." Duplica interrupts, "I'm only interested in becoming the world's greatest Ditto master."
"You made that up." Alex says
"Maybe but my point still stands. My dream is for Ditto and I to be big stars." Duplica explains, "That's why I created The House of Imite. So Ditto and I could put on shows and entertain people."
"Why here specifically?" Brock asks
"Well this area is so boring that I figured people crossing through could use some entertainment. And since I always liked imitating people and Pokemon I figured putting it here would be a good stop for those travellers."
Duplica's expression suddenly shifts to one of sadness, "Although things didn't work out too well."
Flashback
Spotlights shine on the stage as Duplica and Ditto come out. The crowd claps and cheers for them
"Thank you! Thank you!" Duplica waves at the crowd. Ditto imitates her
Ditto! Ditto!
"I am the amazing Duplica and this is my assistant Ditto!"
Ditto!
"And now for my first imitation..." Duplica reveals a flower hat shaped like Gloom, "My impression of..."
She places the hat on her head and makes a face like Gloom, "Glooooom."
The crowd cheers
Duplica goes through a few more impressions such as a Metapod, Psyduck and Horsea. The crowd is really into it
"Now it's time for my assistant Ditto! Would the Machoke in the front row please come onto the stage?"
A Machoke climbs onto the stage
Machoke
"Ok Ditto transform!"
Ditto starts glowing and transforms into Machoke. The crowd gasps in amassment...until they notice that Ditto's face hasn't changed
"Hey it didn't transform properly!" Someone in the crowd yells
"Yeah what gives!" Someone else yells
Duplica rubs her head sheepishly. Machoke walks off stage upset
"Thank you very much Machoke." Duplica says embarrassed.
She regains her composure, "Now how about this Voltorb?"
Voltorb hops onto the stage
Voltorb
"Ditto transform!"
Ditto transforms from Machoke into Voltorb...and it's face still hasn't changed
"Wow it transformed into an Electrode!" Someone from the crowd yells
"No it just didn't change it's face again!" Someone else yells
The crowd is starting to get upset
"Why does it still have that dumb face!" Someone yells
"That's so...you can tell them apart." Duplica laughs nervously
The crowd starts booing and throwing rotten tomatoes at her
"Ow ow! Cut it out!" Duplica yells
Ditto gets angry and Self-Destructs. The crowd runs off terrified
"No wait come back!" Duplica yells
Flashback ends
Duplica had lead everyone down to the stage while she was talking
"No one came to see our shows after that." Duplica finishes sadly, "And I was forced to close down..."
"That's awful Duplica." Misty says
"Yeah imagine mistaking a Voltorb for an Electrode." Alex says
"You always fixate on the weirdest part of these stories." Misty comments
Duplica bends down and rubs her Ditto who is also sad, "Ditto's trying very hard to master Transform, but it just can't get it's face to change..."
Ditto...
Ash clenches his fist determined, "I know! We'll help it!"
"We will?" Misty asks surprised
"Yeah it can't be that hard." Ash says determined, "We'll get your Ditto to learn how to transform properly in no time at all."
Duplica stares at Ash gratefully, "Really?"
And that's when the lights go off
"What's going on?" Duplica asks confused
A bunch of spotlights start shining on the stage. Team Rocket rise out from a hidden panel
"It's them!" The Pokegang yell
"I didn't put a hidden panel in there?" Duplica says confused
"Oh we installed it ourselves." James says
"Yeah we had to make a dramatic entrance." Meowth says
"Now we're gonna steal your Ditto." Jessie says
"What!" Duplica yells, "Who even are you?"
Jessie and James smirk while The Pokegang just groan, "Allow us to introduce ourselves."
Jessie: Prepare for trouble!
James: Make it double!
Jessie: To protect the world from devastation!
James: To unite all peoples within our nation!
Jessie: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
James: To extend our reach to the stars above!
Jessie: Jessie!
James: James!
Jessie: Team Rocket blast off at the speed of light!
James: Surrender now or prepare to fight fight fight!
Meowth: Meowth! That's right! Let's give em a hand!
Meowth starts clapping. Ash ends up clapping as well. Everyone else just looks at him confused
"What? Clapping's contagious." Ash defends himself
Meowth suddenly leaps forward and grabs Ditto
"Ditto no!" Duplica yells
"Weezing go Smokescreen!" James yells
Weezing pops out of it's pokeball and breathes out the smoke. The whole room is very quickly filled with it and when it clears Team Rocket are gone, along with Ditto
"No my Ditto is gone!"
"I have to admit I'm impressed they got away." Alex says
"Not the time Alex!" Misty yells at him, "We have to find Ditto!"
Team Rocket have escaped to a small house nearby. The roof of the house is a giant Meowth shaped head that looks a lot like but is most certainly not the Meowth balloon
"Cute little Ditto. Our little Ditto." Jessie says happily
Ditto stares up at them terrified
"Why didn't we think of this before?" Jessie asks
"Yeah now we can take our name off the loser list and put them in the winner column." James says
"And da boss will make me top cat." Meowth says
"So what are we gonna do with it?" James asks
"I have an idea. Did you hear what happened with Andrew?" Meowth asks
"No. What happened?" Jessie asks
"Da boss sent him to steal a Dratini from the Safari Zone but he failed miserably. Da boss was so mad that he demoted Andrew back down to grunt status." Meowth says
"Woah that's harsh." James says
"Wait that means we outrank him now!" Jessie cheers
"Yes we're the greatest Team Rocket agents in all of history!" James cheers
"Focus you nitwicks!" Meowth yells. He takes out a book of Pokemon and pages through it to find a picture of Dratini, "This is our chance to really get into the boss' good graces. We can have this Ditto turn into a Dratini and present that to da boss!"
Team Rocket start fantasizing. In this fantasy Jessie is the boss and Meowth is Persian. James presents Dratini to her
"Sir we finally captured Dratini. That legendary Pokemon." James kneels
"Yes. Well done. I will reward you lavishly for your hard work. From now on you will take my place as the head of Team Rocket." Jessie says
Meowth
"Your wish is my command." James replies
The three of them start giggling and laughing like maniacs
"Let's do it! Let's make it change right now!" James shouts excitedly
"Hang on." Jessie interrupts, she has a mischievous grin on her face, "How about we have some fun first?"
James and Meowth look at her confused and suspicious, "Some fun?"
Jessie pulls out a picture and shows it to Ditto, "Ditto what would the person in this picture look like if he was an adult?"
Ditto studies the picture intently
"Transform and show me." Jessie has started blushing heavily
"Who's picture is that?" James starts trying to see the picture but Jessie is holding him back, "Let me see!"
"No way James this is personal!"
Meowth takes a look, "It's a little boy!"
"Oooh! Jessie has a boyfriend!"
Jessie holds the picture close to her, "He was my first true love."
"First love? When did this happen?" James asks confused
"We were much younger. Sadly things were not meant to be." Jessie shows the picture to Ditto again, "Show me."
Ditto transforms into a picture of the boy as an adult...and still has the Ditto face
"Huh!" Jessie yells shocked. James and Meowth collapse to the floor laughing their lungs out
"Your first love...sure has...an interesting face!" James gets out between laughs
"Especially...if you're...interested in Ditto!" Meowth gets out
Jessie hits them both angrily. She then turns towards the Ditto furiously, "Is that your idea of a transformation!"
Ditto responds by licking her causing James and Meowth to once again break out into laughter. Jessie grabs the book and shoves the picture of Dratini right into Ditto's face
"Now do as I say and transform into this!" She yells
Ditto responds by turning into a book...which still has it's face on it
"I'm beginning to see a flaw in this plan." James comments
"HOW DARE YOU INSULT US LIKE THIS! I'M WARNING YOU, YOU BETTTER TRANSFORM PERFECTLY THIS TIME OR I'LL TRANSFORM YOU INTO JELLY!" Jessie screams
Ditto starts shaking out of fear
"We've sent out Pidgeotto and Zubat for surveillance." Brock tells Duplica who is hunched in a corner depressed
"Thanks you guys." Duplica replies sadly
"There's no way they got away." Alex says, "I mean they travel in a giant Meowth shaped balloon."
Pidgeotto and Zubat fly through the window
Pidgeo!
Zubat!
"Did you guys find anything?" Brock asks
The two Pokemon nod
"How far?" Ash asks
Pidgeotto gestures with it's wing showing it's not too far
"Alright let's go get Ditto!"
"Wait." Duplica stands up, "I think I have an idea."
Ditto has transformed into Meowth...but it still can't get the face right
"What's wrong with you!" Jessie yells, "Why can't you get it right!"
"I don't have a goofy face like that." Meowth says offended
"Get it right this time Ditto. Or you'll regret it." James says angrily
Meowth extends his claws, "That's right."
Ditto!
Ditto starts rubbing it's face in a panic and manages to force it's face to transform into Meowth's.
Team Rocket cheer, "Success!"
"You really can do it if you try. Great job Ditto." Jessie congratulates the Pokemon
"Now about a Dratini?" Meowth asks
"Sorry Meowth!" They hear Ash's voice startling them. They turn towards the entrance when the lights turn off
"Huh?"
Ash, Brock, Duplica and Misty are facing away from Team Rocket with spotlights shining on them. They're also all dressed in white Team Rocket uniforms
Ash: Prepare for trouble!
Ash spins around to face them
Brock: And make it Double, Double!
Brock spins around to face them
James(angrily): Uhh, quit imitating us!
Misty: To protect the world from devastation!
Misty spins around to face them
Duplica: To ignite all people within our nation!
Duplica spins around to face them
Jessie(angrily): Err! This is insulting!
While Team Rocket are distracted Alex is sneaking around to get Ditto. He is also dressed in a Team Rocket uniform
Ash: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
Misty: To extend our reach to the stars above!
"How come I never get to do the motto?" Alex mutters to himself upset
Ash: Ash!
Misty: Misty!
Brock: And Brock!
Duplica: Duplica, that's right!
Brock: Team Rocket blast off at the speed of light!
Duplica: Surrender now, or prepare to fight all of us!
Pika, Pika!
Jessie and James are shaking out of sheer rage
"That was great to do the whole thing!" Misty exclaims
"Now I know why they like saying all that dumb stuff." Ash says
"I know. Maybe we should all become actors." Duplica suggests
"Team Rocket is not something to be made fun of but if you're going to imitate us at least do it right!" Jessie yells
"To unite all peoples within our nation not ignite!" James yells
"We'll be taking Ditto back now." Duplica says
Alex reaches the table where Meowth and Ditto are
"Uh guys we have a slight problem."
Everyone turns to face him and see that Ditto and Meowth look identical
"I can't tell them apart." Alex says
"But I thought Ditto couldn't transform it's face?" Ash asks confused
"It couldn't but through some tough love we corrected that flaw." Jessie brags
"That's right." One of the Meowth says
"That's right." The other one repeats
"Oh thank you!" Duplica's eyes start tearing up. Team Rocket stare at her confused
"I've tried everything to get Ditto to learn to imitate faces." Duplica's voice is quivering, "Now it can finally become the Pokemon I always knew it was meant to be."
The Pokegang are watching moved by this. Jessie and James start crying
"That's so beautiful I can't stand it." Jessie wipes her eyes
"Hey guys how about we just resolve this without some big battle?" Ash asks
"You're right." James says tearfully
Jessie grabs one of the Meowth, "We'll just give you Ditto."
They hand the Meowth to Duplica
"Guys what are you doing?" Meowth asks confused
Team Rocket grab the other Meowth
"Goodbye!" They yell
The walls to the house suddenly fall apart revealing that yes...it was actually the Meowth balloon. Team Rocket take off
"Goodbye everyone!" Jessie waves at them
"Good luck with Ditto!" James yells
"Wait!" Duplica suddenly chucks Meowth towards the balloon
"Ahhh!" Meowth screams
"Duplica what are you doing?" Ash yells confused
"That's not Ditto!"
Meowth lands on the edge of the basket and clings on tightly, "Help!"
James and Jessie quickly pull him in, "How did they figure it out!"
Ditto suddenly bites Jessie's hand
"Ouch!" She lets go and Ditto leaps from the balloon. Duplica catches it
"I wouldn't be much of a trainer if I couldn't see through that transform." Duplica hugs her Ditto who transforms back to normal
"You both are dimwits!" Meowth yells at his teammates
"You're the one who did a terrible impression!" James yells
"It's time for plan B!" Jessie presses a button and a cannon pops out from the bottom of their balloon
"We'll get that Ditto no matter what!" Jessie yells
"Pikachu use-" Ash is about to give a command when Alex steps forward
"Relax I have this." He pulls out his Golden Pokeball. Team Rocket's eyes widen in fear when they see it
"Abort! Abort!" They start trying to float away faster
"Go Gyarados!" Alex tosses the pokeball and Gyarados pops out
Rarrrrrr!
It sees Team Rocket and immediately powers up a Hyper Beam
"This is gonna hurt." Team Rocket gulp. Gyarados fires the Hyper Beam hitting the balloon and causing an explosion
"Team Rocket's blasting off again!"
"That never gets old." Alex chuckles
Misty is hiding behind Ash, "Yes it does!"
"I'm so glad to have you back Ditto." Duplica says
Ditto!
"Ditto could you transform into a Pikachu for me?" Duplica asks
Ditto hops out of Duplica's arms and transforms into a Pikachu, face and all
"That's amazing. Ditto transforms perfectly." Misty says
The two Pikachu stand side by side
"Wow. I can barely tell them apart." Ash says
Ash gets down on his knees, "Actually I really can't tell them apart."
Both Pikachu just stare at him confused.
Duplica smirks, "Well I guess you need to keep training Ashy-boy."
Ash huffs. Duplica bends down and picks up one of the Pikachu which transforms back into Ditto. Alex meanwhile is doing stretches
"You know these uniforms are actually quite comfortable. Could I keep this?"
Duplica finishes fixing the sign on the outside of the theatre, "There. The House of Imite is reopened."
The Pokegang are preparing to leave. They wave goodbye to Duplica
"Congratulations!" Ash yells
"You did it Duplica!" Misty yells
"Thanks you guys!" Duplica yells, "And come back and see us anytime!"
"Take care of yourself!" Brock yells
"And good luck!" Alex yells
Pikachu!
They turn and head back down the path
"You know maybe I should catch a Ditto of my own?" Ash suggests
"I don't think you'd be able to handle it." Misty teases
"Oh yeah!" Ash yells
Team Rocket have crashed in the middle of the woods
"So our Ditto plan failed. Any other ideas?" Jessie asks
"Well I heard the twerp got a Dratini egg. How about we try and swipe that?" Meowth asks
"I don't think the boss would be happy if we gave him an egg." James says
Meowth sighs, "Back to da drawing board then..."

Duplica: You know for an organization devoted to stealing Pokemon, they're really picky about the kind of Pokemon they steal
Alex: You have a good point. I mean why go through all the trouble of making Ditto transform into a Dratini when you can just give the boss a Ditto?
Jessie: Yeah why didn't we do that?
James: We need to really start thinking our plans out better
