Meowth: Who Gets to Keep Togepi?
The Pokegang are still travelling along Route 20 to get to Matcha City. They have stopped at a Pokemon Centre to heal up their Pokemon and eat some lunch, but first Ash has decided to check in with Professor Oak
"I hope he's around." Ash says as he dials Professor Oak's number. The video phone rings for a bit before Professor Oak appears on screen
"Hi Professor Oak!" Ash says excitedly
"Oh hello Ash! It's been awhile since I heard from you. How is everyone doing?" Professor Oak asks
"We're doing well." Ash replies, "I've already gotten six badges and am on my way to get my seventh."
"That's good to hear. How about Alex? He never bothers to talk to me."
"Alex is..." Ash glances over to the side where Alex is trying to get Brock to stop harrassing Nurse Joy, "Occupied."
Pikachu hops onto Ash's lap to say hello to Professor Oak
Pika Pikachu!
"Hello there Pikachu. You're looking well." Professor Oak says
Misty suddenly shoves Ash out of the way, "I'm fine too."
"I'm glad to hear it." Professor Oak replies, "Well they say no news is good news but I do wish you'd let me know how things are going now and then."
Ash's Muk moves past the screen and starts bumping into Professor Oak
"I'm sorry Professor. It's just that we've been kinda busy lately." Ash says
"Tell him about Aerodactyl!" Alex yells offscreen
"An Aerodactyl? I recall Gary mentioning something about that." Professor Oak says
"Oh yeah well-" Ash's thoughts are interrupted by Muk grabbing onto Professor Oak
"Come on cut that out." Oak complains
"My Muk seems to be doing ok." Ash chuckles
Muk meanwhile has literally pinned Professor Oak to the table, "Taking care of it hasn't been so easy. Will you behave!" He tries to shove Muk off but the Pokemon isn't budging
Muk! Muk!
"I hope the next Pokemon you send will be easier to manage."
"I hope so too Professor, but I haven't caught any new ones." Ash replies realizing he hasn't caught any new Pokemon since the Safari Zone
"Well make sure the next one's not so-" Muk suddenly completely covers Professor Oak
Muk!
Professor Oak manages to slip free from underneath Muk, "I almost forgot! Bring Alex over, I need to speak to both of you."
"Oh sure. Alex come over here!" Ash yells and Alex heads over dragging Brock along with him
"Yep?" Alex asks
"Do you two have your Pokedex on you?" Professor Oak asks and they both nod, "Good. I need to provide you both with the new upgrade."
"A new upgrade?" Ash asks confused
"Yes more information on Pokemon and their movesets have been added to the database. It's important to keep you up to date on these things." Professor Oak explains
"How can we get the upgrade?" Alex asks
"Do you see that slot underneath the screen?" Professor Oak asks
"Yeah." Alex replies
"Just place your Pokedex in there and I'll upload the update." Professor Oak explains
"Cool!" Ash places his pokedex in. The video on the screen is replaced for a few seconds by a download bar before Professor Oak returns
"It's done. Now Alex place your Pokedex into the slot."
Alex does so and a few seconds later his Pokedex is also updated
"Thanks Professor." They both say
"Your welcome. I have to go now, goodluck my boys." Professor Oak hangs up
"I want to try this new update." Ash says excitedly. He points his Pokedex at Pikachu
Pikachu the Mouse Pokemon
"Hey the voice is different." Ash says surprised
"Guess the new upgrade changed the voice module." Alex shrugs
An Electric type. When several of these Pokemon gather, their electricity could build and cause lightning storms. Pikachu is the evolved form of Pichu and evolves into Raichu. This Pikachu is Male
"So cool." Ash exclaims
"Other than the voice change that doesn't seem that different." Alex states confused
The gang have now sat down for lunch, while they are waiting for their food they are overlooking a map. Brock is busy polishing the egg
"So I think we're about here." Misty points at a spot on the map
"Is it just me or does Route 20 feel way too long?" Ash asks
"It's like whoever was in charge of naming the routes got lazy and just lumped all the areas together." Alex says, "I mean look at this. Route 20 stretches all the way from Stone Town to Matcha City. There's like five cities in-between those!"
Brock blows on the egg causing Ash to glance over at him
"Hey Brock when do you think that egg's gonna hatch?" Ash asks
"Who knows? But I've been keeping it close to me every night so it'll stay nice and warm." Brock says
"What? You mean you sleep with it?" Misty asks alarmed
"It's the only way it'll hatch. What else could I do?" Brock asks
"What if you roll over and crush it in your sleep?" Alex asks
"Why are you always so morbid?" Misty asks
"To cope with the loss of my father." Alex replies casually
"Uh..." Misty is at a loss for word. Alex just smirks at her
"Moving on...Brock what do you think it will hatch into?" Ash asks
"To tell you the truth Ash I don't know." Brock replies
"So it could be anything. Oh imagine if it's a beautiful Lapras!" Misty exclaims
"I'd like for it to be a rock type personally." Brock says
Ash's eyes widen, "Wait it could even be an Aerodactyl?"
"It's possible." Brock replies
Ash chuckles nervously, "I think one's enough."
"How is Aerodactyl doing anyway?" Alex asks, "You never let it out around us."
"Well the last time I let it out it tried to eat me so progress." Brock replies, "I've been doing some research on extinct Pokemon and I tried to get in touch with some old friends at the Pewter Museum but I haven't had much luck."
While the four of them are having this discussion, Team Rocket are spying on them
"Did you hear that?" Meowth asks, "They're hatching a new Pokemon."
"I think he said it's a Dratini." James says
"No no he said an Aerodactyl." Jessie says
"Whatever it is we've got to get our hands on that egg." Meowth says, "And I have the perfect plan to do so."
The Pokegang exit the Pokemon Centre and are ready to continue their journey
"It's not much longer." Brock says as he looks over the map, "I think about a week, maybe two before we reach Matcha City."
"Hello everybody!" They hear a high pitched woman's voice. They turn and see two women, who have their faces covered, have approached them. Both women are holding a basket full of eggs
"Would you like to buy our eggs?" The one woman with blue hair asks
They present the baskets to the group. Misty picks up one of the eggs and examines it, all the eggs look very similar to the one they have, "What kind of Pokemon eggs are they?"
"Wait and find out when they hatch." The woman with pink hair replies
"Won't you buy some? Please please please." The blue haired woman begs
"Uh we don't need any Pokemon eggs." Ash says, "We already have one."
"Ah" The women gasp, "Let us see."
"Um sure." Brock takes out the Pokemon egg, "Here. Like it?"
The two women suddenly toss their baskets at the gang causing all their eggs to spill out
"Ah!"
Brock's egg is knocked out of his hand and Meowth swipes it
"Guys I dropped the egg!" Brock yells
They look down at all the eggs on the ground, "Which one is ours?" Alex asks
"They're not egg sellers!" Ash yells
The two women start giggling and rip off their disguises to reveal it's Jessie and James
Jessie: Prepare for trouble!
James: Make it double!
Jessie: To protect the world from devastation!
James: To unite all peoples within our nation!
Jessie: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
James: To extend our reach to the stars above!
Jessie: Jessie!
James: James!
"Is that it?" Brock interrupts. Jessie and James realize that they're being ignored as the twerps are too busy digging through all the eggs
"Hey!" Jessie yells, "You didn't let us finish!"
"Yeah that's right!" James yells, "And we didn't even get to the best part!"
Misty grabs one of the eggs, "I got it!"
However the egg suddenly cracks open revealing a little flag with a frowny face inside
"Nevermind."
"I think this is it!" Ash yells
The egg cracks revealing a fake tongue inside
"Oh come on!"
"Is this what you're looking for?" They hear Meowth's voice and look over to see him holding the egg
"That's it!" Brock yells, "Meowth's got our egg!"
"It was..." Jessie starts
"...your egg" James finishes
Team Rocket suddenly take off running
"Come back you thieves!" Ash yells
Team Rocket have shockingly managed to get away. They are hiding in a cabin in the middle of the woods
"We did it!" Meowth cheers
"A great success!" Jessie leans back in her chair smirking, "All because I made such a cute egg's sale girl."
"Yeah maybe." Meowth rolls his eyes
"So should we fry it or scramble it?" James asks causing Meowth to scratch him, "Ouch!"
"We're not gonna eat it!" Meowth yells, "I'm hatching it!"
Meowth grabs the egg
"But how will you do that?" Jessie asks
"I will warm it with my body." Meowth replies before laying on top of the egg. James and Jessie just stare at each other
Team Rocket are eating dinner, Meowth is still holding onto the egg
"Still holding that egg?" James asks
"Ofcourse I am." Meowth replies, "If I put down my beautiful egg it'll cool off and it won't hatch."
Meowth is now bathing with the egg
"Meow my little eggy wiggy. While you and I share a nice hot soak I'm gonna tell you a bath time story."
"Aw you're boiling it." James says delighted, "I like mine soft boiled!"
Meowth responds by throwing boiling hot water at James and Jessie who unfortunately caught up in the whole thing
"Boiled! I told you I'm gonna hatch it not eat it!" Meowth yells
Team Rocket are now going to sleep in their sleeping bags. Meowth places the egg down next to him and cuddles with it
"Goodnight egg. Time for us to go sleepy." Meowth goes to sleep. Jessie and James are watching the whole thing disturbed
"I didn't know Meowth could be so-" James starts saying
"Revolting!" Jessie interrupts
The Pokegang have spent the whole of the previous day tracking down Team Rocket. They've been following a trail of fake eggs that the trio unintentionally dropped in their big escape
"I think we're getting closer." Alex says
"They're pretty dumb aren't they?" Ash asks, "Leaving us this trail of eggs to follow."
"If they're so dumb then how come they have the egg?" Brock asks
"I guess you have a point there." Ash sighs
They arrive outside the cabin
"They must be in there." Misty says
Team Rocket are having breakfast. Meowth is busy polishing his egg off while James is cooking
"Rise and shine my little eggy-poo. Meowth's gonna make you nice and shiny cause we've got a lot of incubating to do."
James places a plate of food down on the table, "Here."
"What's that?" Meowth asks
"Scrambled eggs." James replies with a big smile
Meowth responds by throwing the plate into James' place, "I told you to lay off the e-g-g-s! How could you be so insensitive you numbskull!"
The window to their cabin is suddenly shattered as Pidgeotto, Geodude and Staryu break in
"We're under attack!" Jessie yells
James and Jessie are both knocked to the ground while Pidgeotto snatches the egg from Meowth
"Ah!" Meowth yells
Pidgeotto drops the egg into Ash's hands, "Goodwork Pidgeotto."
"Hey! Give me back my egg!" Meowth demands
"That's funny. And all along I thought this was our egg." Ash replies
"Get my egg!" Meowth yells and Jessie and James toss their pokeballs. Arbok, Weezing, Lickitung and Weepinbell pop out
Weezing immediately lets out a Smokescreen blocking off everyone's vision
"Becareful of the egg Ash!" Brock yells
Arbok suddenly leaps at Ash who dives to the ground to avoid it. He hears footsteps and looks up to see he is face to face with Meowth
"Uh hi Meowth" Ash says
Meowth scratches his face
"Owww!" Ash lets go of the egg to clutch his face. Meowth grabs it and tries to make a run for it when Geodude suddenly slams into him
"Oww!" The egg goes flying out of his hands and towards Misty
"I've got it!" Misty yells as she reaches out to catch it when Jessie suddenly leaps past catching it
"I've got it!" Jessie yells
"Hey! Staryu Tackle her!" Misty order and Staryu flies past slamming into Jessie
"Ooof!" Jessie is knocked to the ground and the egg goes flying. Alex manages to grab it
"I got it!"
Lickitung suddenly licks him
"I don't feel too good..." Alex falls backwards and Lickitung uses it's tongue to grab the egg. It then decides to try to eat it
"Lickitung no!" James yells, "Weepinbell stop it!"
Weepinbell shoots it's vines forward and snatches the egg from Lickitung. However Ash suddenly grabs the egg before Weepinbell could pull it back
"Got it!" Ash yells
Weezing slams into Ash sending the egg flying and into James' arms
"Got it!" James yells
And Geodude slams into James sending the egg flying into Brock's arms
"Yeah!" Brock yells
And then Arbok slams into Brock causing him to drop the egg which Meowth catches
"Ah ha!" Meowth cheers
"Pidgeotto use Whirlwind!" Ash yells and Pidgeotto starts flapping it's wings. A powerful burst of wind shoots through the room blowing the smoke away...and also causing Meowth to trip and toss the egg away from everyone
"Ah!"
"Quick someone catch it before it breaks!" Misty yells
Ash dives forward to try and grab the egg but misses
"I missed!"
Luckily for everyone Pikachu manages to grab it before it hits the ground[
Pika!
"Pikachu!" Ash yells
Everyone else let out relieved sighs
"You did it Pikachu." Misty congratulates him
"Nice catch." Brock pets him
Ash takes the egg from Pikachu
"Hmm?"
"What's wrong Ash?" Brock asks
"It feels like it's moving." Ash says
The top of the egg starts cracking
"It's hatching!" Brock exclaims
Him and Ash huddle together excitedly. Misty suddenly shoves them out of the way
"Let me see!" She grabs onto the egg
Two stubby hands and round feet with two toes each emerge from the egg. The top half breaks away revealing a spiked head. The newborn Pokemon yawns and opens it's eyes
Togi?
"It hatched! It hatched!" Misty exclaims excitedly, "So cute!"

"Hello to you too." Misty says
Priii!
The baby Pokemon starts waving it's arms and legs around excitedly
Togi Togi Togi!
"Oh we're so lucky!" Misty exclaims
"We are." Brock says as everyone, even Team Rocket, crowd around the baby
"If Pikachu hadn't caught, that precious little Pokemon might have..." Jessie stops talking as everyone suddenly remembers that they're enemies. They all hop up to fight
"We have a battle to finish!" Jessie yells
"I almost forgot!" James yells
"Let's get them!" Meowth yells and him and Team Rocket's Pokemon rush forward to attack
"Pikachu Thunderbolt!" Ash commands
Pikachuuuuuuuuuu!
Pikachu fires off the attack shocking Team Rocket
"Ahhhhhh!"
Ash, Brock, Misty and their Pokemon escape
"My egg..." Meowth growls weakly
Alex groans as the paralysis wears off, "Guys?"
The rest of the group have stopped at a park nearby. Misty is playing peek-a-boo with the baby
"Where am I?" Misty removes her hands from her face
Togi Togi Priiii!
"It's so cute!"
"It is." Ash agrees, "But what kind of Pokemon is it?"
"Good question. How about you check Dexter?" Brock suggests
"Oh right." Ash pulls out his pokedex and scans the Pokemon
Togepi the Spike Ball Pokemon. A Fairy type. The shell seems to be filled with joy. It is said that it will share good luck when treated kindly. Togepi evolves into Togetic. This Togepi is Male
"So Togepi's your name. It even sounds cute." Misty says

Pikachu waves at Togepi who hops up and down excitedly

"You think so too huh Pikachu?"
Pika
"Ofcourse it's cute." Ash says, "All newborns are cute"
Ash suddenly realizes something is wrong when there's no snarky comment
"Guys we forgot Alex!" Ash yells
"Hmm? Oh I'm sure he's fine." Misty says
"Yeah he'll catch up soon." Brock says as he picks up Togepi. He sticks his tongue out and makes a funny face but Togepi just stares back blankly
"I really think maybe we should go back." Ash says worried
"Oh fine. Let me just grab my Togepi and-" Misty starts saying
"Wait what do you mean your Togepi?" Ash asks
"Yeah if anyone should keep Togepi it's me." Brock declares, "I'm the one who incubated the egg."
"But I'm the one who found it in the first place." Ash says, "I just let you watch it for awhile!"
"I mothered it!" Brock yells
Misty takes Togepi from Brock, "Well I think I should keep Togepi because it likes me best. Right Togepi?"
Priiii!
"It's obvious. Togepi has made the right choice."
"No fair!" Ash yells, "I found it so it's mine!"
"Well maybe you should have taken better care of it." Misty retorts
"But you never took care of it!" Ash yells
"That's right! I took care of it!" Brock yells
"Oh yeah!" Meowth stomps over to them, "I took care of it more than all of you put together!"
The three of them look confused. James suddenly pops up behind Ash. He has tears in his eyes
"That's right. You never saw how much Meowth cared for that egg." James says tearfully, "They were together when they ate. They were together when they slept. They even bathed together. It was touching."
Jessie pops up on Ash's other side. She also has tears in her eyes, "Please James. Just hearing it brings tears to my eyes." She uses a cloth to wipe away her tears
"I never knew you were so sensitive." Ash says a bit uncomfortable
"Save your pity!" Meowth points at Ash dramatically, "All I want from you is my Togepi!"
"Team Rocket's acting almost human." Misty says confused
"Alright! The only way to decide this is with a Pokemon battle!" Ash yells
"A Pokemon battle?" Meowth asks
"That's right. We'll have a tournament and whoever wins gets to keep Togepi." Ash declares, "Are you in or are you out?"
Team Rocket huddle together for a few seconds
"Count me in!" Meowth declares
The Pokegang and Team Rocket have found a battlefield. Togepi has been placed on a pedestal to watch the action
Togi Togi
It has absolutely no clue what's going on
"We'll have a six way tournament." Brock announces
"Wait a minute!" Meowth interrupts. He points at Jessie and James, "These two have no right to participate."
"Hey!" Jessie yells
"What do you mean!" James yells
"I hereby testify that neither of you performed a single act to assist Togepi." Meowth folds his arms dramatically
"I can't believe you're being so selfish!" Jessie yells
"What about Team Rocket?" James asks angrily
"So then it'll just be the four of us." Misty says
"Sounds good to me." Brock agrees
Jessie and James scowl and slink off to the benches upset
"Let's only do one on one battles." Ash says
"Ok." Brock agrees
"Let's do it." Misty agrees
"Fine by me." Meowth agrees
Ash, Misty and Brock go off to separate corners to decide which Pokemon they're gonna use. Meowth is standing by himself confidently when a realization hits him
"I forgot! I don't have any Pokemon!" He looks over at Jessie and James, "Hey guys could I use your Pokemon?"
"Not a chance." They reply and Meowth slumps over
"What am I gonna do now?" He bends over and rests his paws against the ground
"Hmm...Oh yeah I forgot. I am a Pokemon. I can battle for myself." Meowth realizes
Meowth and Brock are preparing to battle. Brock has sent out Onix
"First up is Brock vs Meowth!" Ash yells
He bangs a stick against a soda can mimicking a bell
"Go Onix!" Brock yells and Onix slides forward
Rarrr!
"Go Meowth!" Meowth yells and he hops onto the field, "Meowth!"
Onix immediately sends him flying
"Meowww!" Meowth slams into the ground. He hops back over to the trainer corner
"Meowth give it your Scratch attack!"
Meowth then hops back to the spot where he landed and lays back on the ground. He forces himself back to his feet
"Meowth!"
He rushes forward and starts scratching Onix...and doing nothing. Ash and Misty are just watching in disbelief while Pikachu is using it's tail to play with Togepi
"Being your own trainer must be tough." Ash says
"Must be." Misty agrees
"Your Scratch can't do anything against Onix's rock solid body!" Brock yells, "Now Onix crush him!"
Onix swings it's tail down but Meowth manages to roll out of the way. Onix continues doing it and Meowth is knocked to the ground by the force of the blow. Meowth then hops back to the trainer's corner
"Hang in there Meowth!" He yells, "But your Scratch attack isn't working."
Priii
He looks over at Togepi, "I'll do it for Togepi. Meowth refuses to lose."
He looks around and notices two buckets full of water, "That's it."
"What do you say Meowth? Do you surrender?" Brock asks mockingly
Meowth grabs the buckets of water and rushes towards Onix, "Meowth use the absolutely drenched with water attack!"
He tosses the water at Onix who roars in pain
"Ah!" Brock yells
"Fury Swipes!" Meowth yells and swipes at Onix. The water has made it's skin softer and the attack does a lot of damage. Onix roars before fainting
"Onix!" Brock yells shocked. He rushes over to check on his Pokemon, "Are you ok?"
"The winner is Meowth!" Ash announces
Brock glares at Meowth, "Hey throwing water is cheating!"
"I am merely a parent fighting for his child. And I'm gonna win this thing!" Meowth replies
"Well well." Jessie says surprised
"Meowth won." James says surprised
"Mmm! Mmmm!" Alex suddenly hops towards them. His arms and legs have been tied up and he has been gagged
"Alex!" Ash rushes towards him
"Oh yeah I forgot we tied him up." Jessie says
Ash pulls the gag out of his mouth, "Are you alright?"
"Thanks for leaving me behind!" Alex yells, "Do you have any idea how long it took me to escape from that blasted cabin!"
"You can tell me about it later but right now I'm kind of in the middle of something." Ash says
"Are you serious?"
Alex is sitting next to Jessie and James as Ash and Misty prepare to battle
"So Alex..."
"It is taking all my restraint to not call out Gyarados." Alex tells them
"Next up is Ash and Misty." Brock says bitterly
"Our first battle since Cerulean City." Ash says
"This time I'm gonna beat you." Misty replies
Ash turns his cap around before tossing his pokeball, "Bulbasaur I choose you!"
Bulba Bulbasaur!
"Ah yes just as I expected. You chose Bulbasaur." Misty grabs her pokeball, "Which is why I choose Starm-"
Psyduck suddenly pops out
Psy
"Ahhhh! Quick Psyduck get back into the pokeball!" Misty yells
Duck?
"You're not allowed to call your Pokemon back." Ash taunts her
Misty clenches her fist, "He's right...Ok Bulbasaur go for the head!"
Ash chuckles, "Yeah like I'm that dense"
"You are!" Alex yells from the sidelines
"At least I'm in the tournament!" Ash yells back
"Because you left me behind!" Alex yells
"Could we focus on the battle?" Misty asks
"Fine. Bulbasaur go lick Psyduck's head."
Bulbasaur rushes forward and starts licking Psyduck who laughs at how ticklish it is
Psy aye aye!
"No Bulbasaur!" Misty yells, "You'll never beat Psyduck if you lick it!"
"Good! Now use your Vine Whip to tickle it!" Ash yells
Bulbasaur extends it's vines and starts tickling Psyduck under his arms and feet. Psyduck is rolling on the floor laughing
Psyduck! Psyduck! Psy aye aye!
Psyduck returns itself
"The battle's over! Ash and Bulbasaur win!" Brock announces
Misty falls to her knees while Ash hops around excited
"Alright! We did it! We did it! Yeah!"
Misty starts pounding her fists against the ground, "Nonononono!"
"They're such children." Alex mumbles
"Aren't you the same age?" James asks
"Gyarados go-"
"We're sorry!" Jessie and James yell
Ash and Meowth are now preparing to battle
"I choose Pikachu!" Ash yells and Pikachu steps forward
Chu
"I choose Meowth!" Meowth yells before hopping onto the battlefield, "Meowth!"
Everyone watches on anxiously. Meowth stares at Pikachu determined. He glances over at Togepi who is watching everything excitedly
(Little Togepi. I still remember when you were just an egg and all we went through together)
Meowth starts flashing back to the events of the previous days
(For your sake Togepi I will win you back!)
Meowth realizes Pikachu has placed his tail against Meowth's charm
"Umm..."
Pikachu lets out a Thunderbolt
"Ahhhhhhhhhh!" Meowth faints
"The winner is Ash!" Brock announces
Misty is just sulking in the corner
"We did it!" Ash cheers
Pikachu!
Jessie and James grab Meowth and start dragging him away
"I knew Meowth would lose." Jessie sighs
"The heroes always get the breaks." James sighs
Meowth opens his eyes and looks back at Togepi, "Little Togepi. I hope you'll be happy with your new trainer. Goodbye now."
Meowth starts crying as he is dragged away
"Togepi you're mine now." Ash says happily. He reaches for Togepi who just stares up at him blankly
"Huh? What's wrong?" Ash asks
Alex walks over, "It doesn't seem to like you. Can't blame it honestly."
"Togepi. Hey." Brock waves at Togepi who stares back at him blankly, "It's no good."
"I told you but you didn't want to believe me." Misty says
Togepi turns towards Misty and gets to it's feet happily
Togi Togi
"See it doesn't want to go to anyone else but me." Misty says
Priii!
Misty picks up Togepi who squeals happily
"What's going on here?" Ash asks confused
"It imprinted." Alex replies
"Imprinted?" Ash asks
"Check your Pokedex." Alex says and Ash pulls out his Pokedex
A newly hatched Togepi considers the first person it sees as it's mother
"What!" Ash yells
"That explains it." Brock says, "When it hatched Misty was the first person it saw"
"I knew it. Togepi likes me because it thinks I'm it's mother." Misty says
"Well it's definitely not for your personality." Alex replies
"Hey!"
"Don't hey me. You guys left me behind. I'm allowed to be rude." Alex says
