"See," Jewel said to Luiz, "nothing bad happened."

"Well it could have," Luiz replied defeatedly.

Jewel then proceeded to take full advantage of the humans' lack of protection or their all important money and managed to pickpocket money from basically every person that walked past. She parkoured from bench to planter to traffic cone, snatching bills from people's pockets and tucking them under her wing for safe keeping.

Once or twice a human noticed their money disappearing and spun around hoping to catch the perpetrator, but not once did they suspect the innocent looking bird on the floor.

Jewel was used to life in the jungle, where you had to work for everything. If you wanted a brazil nut, you'd have to fly around and look for one. You'd have to evade the dangers of the forest, never lose your direction, always keep your head on. But in the human town, if she needed something, she could just get it.

And that is exactly what she did.

As she was picking pockets, she got kind of tired of having to jump and climb about. She then turned to face the shopfronts and soon caught sight of a bright video poster, advertising those sticky hand toys, and demonstrating how they work.

They immediately caught her eye, so she walked into the shop, strutted past the crowd of gobsmacked humans that seemed to coagulate whenever she bought stuff, placed a green thing on the counter and grabbed the packet of them.

"Easy as pie," Jewel said, bursting out the door, "I guess this is what being a pe... I meancompanionis like."

"From what i've heard, yep," Luiz replied, "just minus a few steps."

"Hmmm," Jewel pondered, but didn't elaborate.

She then used her new sticky hand to easily nab some more cash, flicking the hand up with her beak and watching as the gelatinous palm stuck to the target and pulled it cleanly out the pocket.

Jewel smirked at the ease of it all.

The next thing that caught her eye was a snood. The poster that she saw depicted humans suffocating themselves with the thing but Jewel saw that it could easily be used as something to keep her warm.

Therefore, she hopped into the shop and bought the snood.

"Looks like i've got enough stuff to survive the apocalypse, and it only took me... not long, i don't know i haven't been timing myself. now let's go back to the bookshop, it's just down this road, I've been keeping directions."
