Zabuza fell to the ground, motionless, under the astonished gazes of everyone present. Naruto returned to the land, walking across the water. His eyes first focused on Zabuza and then shifted to the mysterious masked figure with long black hair tied in a bun. Kakashi jumped down from the branch he had been perched on and reappeared next to Zabuza to check his pulse. "He's really dead..." Kakashi thought, glancing warily at the masked figure.
"Thank you very much. I've been waiting a long time for the opportunity to kill Zabuza," said the masked figure with a slight bow of gratitude toward Kakashi.
"That mask... You're a hunter ninja from the Hidden Mist Village," Kakashi remarked, his brows furrowed and his voice laden with distrust.
"You're very well-informed."
"Hunter ninja?" Naruto asked in a commanding tone, demanding answers. His jaw was clenched, and his face twisted into a deep scowl.
"Yes, my mission is to hunt down rogue ninjas. I am a member of the hunter-ninja group from Kirigakure," the masked figure explained with a polite tone.
By their voice and height… They can't be older than Naruto, and they're already a hunter ninja, Kakashi thought, his gaze cautious. This is no ordinary child.
Naruto gritted his teeth, keeping his gaze fixed on the masked figure. His eyes darted to Kakashi and then back to the masked individual, who met his gaze. Naruto's eyes moved to Zabuza's body with a darkened expression before returning to the masked figure, who tilted their head in confusion.
"What the hell?! What are you?!" Naruto shouted angrily, pointing at the masked figure. Such was the fury in his voice that his teammates and Tazuna were startled.
"Don't worry, Naruto. He's not an enemy," Kakashi intervened gently, standing up.
"I'm not asking that! Zabuza... Zabuza was killed. He was very strong. He was very strong, and he was easily killed by a kid. By a kid not so different from me! We look like fools! I can't accept it!" Naruto couldn't accept it; his pride as an Uzumaki wouldn't let him. Accepting that someone his age was stronger would mean going against his belief that the Uzumaki clan was the most powerful in his eyes.
"Well, I understand how you feel, but..." Kakashi spoke with an understanding look. "But… this is the truth." The Jounin gently ruffled his student's hair. "In this world, there are kids younger than you who are stronger than me."
That only made Naruto look away sullenly, letting out a bitter huff from his lips. The masked figure descended to Zabuza's body, lifting it by sliding Zabuza's arm behind their head.
"His battle is over. Now, I must dispose of this body. It's a body full of secrets. Farewell." Forming a hand seal, the masked figure vanished in a whirlwind of leaves.
"Shunshin no Jutsu," Naruto muttered, narrowing his eyes in disdain.
Kakashi exhaled a tired sigh and pulled down his headband to cover the Sharingan.
"Now we must escort Mr. Tazuna back to his house. Let's go!" the Jounin ordered.
"Hahaha! Thank you so much, kids! Let's head home and relax for a while!" Tazuna declared with a hearty laugh.
Kakashi stumbled and collapsed to the ground, exhausted, under the startled and worried gazes of everyone.
"Ah?! What's wrong?!" Sakura asked in alarm.
"Ka… Kakashi-sensei!" Naruto exclaimed, distressed.
"My body… I can't move… I overused the Sharingan," Kakashi thought, weary, before falling unconscious.
"Is Sensei, okay?" Tsunami, Tazuna's daughter, asked with her hands on her hips.
"Yes… but I won't be able to move for a week," Kakashi replied, lying on a futon. To bring him to Tazuna's house, Naruto, Sasuke, and Tazuna had to take turns or work together to carry him, and as soon as they arrived, they dropped him onto the futon to rest.
"What? The Sharingan is incredible, but… if it puts so much strain on the body… I think you should reconsider using it," Sakura pointed out.
"It's not that the Sharingan exerts enormous pressure on the body—though it does. It's just that Kakashi-sensei isn't an Uchiha, so his body isn't compatible," Naruto explained with a nonchalant expression, though his gaze remained distant, as if his mind was still preoccupied with the masked figure and Zabuza.
"Oh! How did you know that, Naruto?" Kakashi asked, surprised.
"One reason is that you can't deactivate the Sharingan; instead, you cover it and close your eye. The other reason is the scar on that eye. Even though it's healed, I can tell it was very deep. I find it hard to believe it didn't involve your eye."
"You're very perceptive, Naruto."
"It's just logic." Naruto shrugged simply. "Besides, I've studied a lot about Dōjutsu. My clan has one, after all."
"Really?!" Sakura exclaimed, turning around with a surprised look.
"Yes. The Rokugan, a Dōjutsu as strong as the Uchiha's Sharingan and the Hyūga's Byakugan. Some even said it was the Dōjutsu closest to the Rinnegan, and that it was wielded by the Sage of the Six Paths in his youth, before becoming the Sage of the Six Paths."
"I've heard about it. Though I've never seen anyone use it, I've heard legends about the Rokugan and how its wielders were considered chosen by destiny and Chakra," Kakashi admitted.
"What makes it so incredible?" Sasuke questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"Absolute perception and understanding of Chakra. It can copy techniques like the Sharingan, though through different methods. It maximizes Chakra production and efficiency," Naruto replied with pride. "For example, if Kakashi-sensei had the Rokugan instead of the Sharingan, he could've copied Zabuza's Jutsu while reducing the number of hand seals to a minimum—perhaps requiring only a single hand seal. And because his Chakra production would be greater, his technique would've been more powerful. Not to mention the astonishing ability to copy Kekkei Genkai like Ice or Storm."
"You don't have it, Naruto?" Sakura asked.
"No. The Rokugan is something you're born with, and it's even rarer than the Sharingan or the Byakugan. There are various theories as to why, but since most of my clan was exterminated, they were never proven."
"So, the Rokugan was something that belonged to the Uzumaki Main Family?" Haruno asked, growing more interested. Every new piece of information about the Uzumaki clan astonished her.
"No." Naruto shook his head. "The Rokugan belonged to one of the two Protector Families, like the Shadow Uzumaki."
"Then what did the Royal Family have that made them so powerful?"
"A blessed physique, even superior to that of other Uzumaki. Greater Chakra quantity and quality. There must be something more, but my mentors won't tell me." Naruto pursed his lips in frustration, like a dissatisfied child.
"Well, the important thing is that this time we defeated a very strong ninja," Tazuna said, wiping the sweat from his brow with a cloth. "We'll be safe for a while."
"Anyway, who was that masked boy?" Sakura asked, placing a hand on her chin with a curious look.
"That's the mask used… by the special hunter team from the Hidden Mist Village. They're also known as the body eliminators. Their job is to completely dispose of a body, leaving no trace," Kakashi explained. "A shinobi's body contains secrets about their village's ninjutsu: information about different types of chakras, herbs, and other things that reveal details about the village. For example, if I were to die, the secrets of the Sharingan could be revealed. And in the worst-case scenario, my jutsus, including my Sharingan, could be stolen. A ninja's body can reveal important information. That's why, by killing rogue ninjas and eliminating their bodies, the hunters protect their village's secrets. They're specialists in that area. No noise, no smell—that's the end of a ninja."
"So, Zabuza has been dismembered and eliminated? How horrifying!" Sakura exclaimed; her face contorted in horror.
Naruto clicked his tongue, his expression dissatisfied.
"Is something wrong, Naruto?" Kakashi raised his head slightly to look at his red-haired student.
"It's nothing. It's just that something's bothering me."
The masked figure carried Zabuza into a forest, where they set Momochi's sword aside and proceeded to unfold a tool kit. Several kunai of different shapes were revealed. They picked the fourth one, a double-edged kunai shaped like scissors.
"First, I'll cut the bandage from his mouth, drain some of his blood, and…" The masked figure slowly brought the tool closer to Zabuza's mouth, only to be surprised.
"It's fine. I'll do it myself." Zabuza stopped them with one hand and, with the other, removed the bandages from his mouth, revealing sharp, pointed teeth.
"Oh. So, you've come back to life," the masked figure said with complete nonchalance.
"Damn it. You're too rough." Zabuza reached for one of the needles piercing his throat and yanked it out abruptly.
"Oh! Don't do it so roughly; you could die," the masked figure warned.
"How long are you going to keep wearing that stupid mask?" Zabuza sat up with a grimace.
"This reminds me of the old days," the masked figure said, bringing a hand to their face. "Besides, it was useful for this performance," they continued, removing the mask. Beneath it was an androgynous, beautiful young person with pale skin, lovely long eyelashes, and large dark brown eyes. "If I hadn't saved you, you would have surely died."
"You didn't need to attack my neck if you wanted to leave me in a near-death state," Zabuza retorted irritably. "You're as annoying as always," he added, adjusting the bandages around his neck.
"You're right." The young person offered a slight, graceful smile. "It's just that I didn't want to leave scars on your beautiful body. And the neck has hardly any muscles, making acupuncture easier there. You won't be able to move for about a week. But… you'll regain your mobility soon."
"You're so pure and sharp. That's what I like about you," Zabuza remarked.
"That's because I'm just a child." The young person let out a small laugh before standing up. "Look, the mist has cleared. Next time, will you be all right?"
"Next time, I'll defeat the Sharingan," Zabuza declared, his tone firm and his expression determined.
Kakashi suddenly woke up, startling Naruto and Sakura, who were very close to his face.
"Kya!" Both kids jumped back in fright.
"Oh, Kakashi-sensei is awake," Tazuna's daughter remarked.
"Idiot! What are you doing? We were so close to seeing under his mask," Sakura whispered angrily to Naruto.
"What is this? Zabuza is dead, but what is this feeling?" Kakashi brought a hand to his face, looking concerned. "I feel like I've forgotten something very important." Kakashi sat up with a thoughtful look. "No… something doesn't add up. Could I have forgotten something?"
"What's wrong, Sensei?" Naruto voiced what everyone in the room was thinking as they watched Kakashi's worried expression.
"Huh? Well. Body disposal teams usually eliminate the body of the person they kill on the spot," Kakashi said, waving his hand.
"So what?" Sakura frowned slightly, confused.
"Don't you see? How did that masked boy dispose of Zabuza's body?"
"Huh? How would we know? The masked boy took the body," Sakura said, shaking her head.
"Yes… if they needed proof of their work, they could have just taken his head," Kakashi stated with a serious expression. "And the weapon used to kill Zabuza…"
"Senbon needles," Naruto interjected, his gaze thoughtful. "A weapon designed for precision strikes, which can make it seem like you've killed someone."
"It can't be…" Sasuke's eyes widened in shock.
"Yes, exactly." Kakashi scratched the back of his neck, looking uneasy.
"What are you talking about?" Tazuna asked, confused.
"Most likely… Zabuza is alive!" Kakashi revealed in a somber tone.
"Kakashi-sensei, you confirmed his death!" Sakura shouted.
"He did, but it was probably only a temporary death," Naruto replied, crossing his arms. "Now I understand why something felt off."
Kakashi nodded at Naruto's words.
"The Senbon needles that the hunter ninja used. Unless they hit a vital organ, they have a low probability of killing an opponent. They're even used by doctors in acupuncture. Hunter ninjas have an intimate understanding of the human body's structure. Putting someone in a state of temporary death is easy for them. First, he carried Zabuza's body, which was much heavier than him. Second, he used a weapon with low lethality. These two points suggest that his goal wasn't to kill Zabuza, but to save him. We can't ignore that possibility."
"Aren't you overthinking this? Hunter ninjas are supposed to kill rogue ninjas," Tazuna remarked.
"No. If you sense something strange, you must prepare for the worst before it's too late. That's one of the ironclad rules of ninjas," Kakashi declared with a sensible expression. "Moreover, whether Zabuza is alive or dead, we have no guarantees that Gatou hasn't hired an even stronger ninja."
Kakashi's gaze drifted to Naruto, who was grinning from ear to ear and trembling with excitement. 'Heh, he's thrilled to hear that Zabuza might still be alive.'
"Sensei, what are you going to do to prepare before it's too late? You can barely move," Sakura asked, concerned.
Kakashi chuckled lightly.
"Guys, you'll have to train."
"Huh? Train?" Sakura's eyes and mouth opened wide in surprise. "Sensei! It's not going to be some light training, is it?!" she continued, her brow furrowed.
'Is he trying to kill us?!' Sakura thought internally, filled with anger. "Our enemy is a ninja who put you in trouble even when you used your Sharingan!"
"Sakura… who saved me when I was in trouble?" Kakashi calmly pointed out. "You're growing fast." Kakashi gave a slight smile. "Especially you, Naruto! You're the one who has progressed the most."
'He's certainly much better than we all thought, but…' Sakura thought, looking at Naruto with discontent.
"But obviously, this is just training until I recover. You can't defeat him without me," Kakashi reassured his team.
"Speaking of recovering, Kakashi-sensei, maybe I can do something to help you recover faster," Naruto revealed, standing up under the puzzled gazes of everyone. "Before, I couldn't summon it, but now that I've taken the first pill, maybe I can." Naruto made a strange hand seal. "Was it like this?" He tilted his head with a thoughtful expression. "Or was it this way?" He made another peculiar hand seal, unrecognized by the ninjas.
"Naruto?! What are you trying to do?!"
"Sakura, please, be quiet. I need to concentrate to summon it," Naruto politely silenced her. He formed another hand seal with a focused expression. His eyes appeared to stare intently at his hands, despite being closed. His brow furrowed, and his lips pressed tightly together.
A powerful amount of chakra enveloped Naruto like a mantle. It was visible to everyone, who watched in surprise. "Round Deer." The chakra compressed and traveled to Naruto's shadow, which rose as a liquid-like substance, denser than water. The amorphous substance began to intertwine, taking the shape of a tall, muscular stag. Its ears were near the top of its head, above its fine-pointed antlers.
Naruto let out a slight sigh and bent over, resting on his knees. He wiped the small beads of sweat dripping from his forehead with the back of his hand.
"I did it." Naruto showed a proud smile. The stag advanced toward Kakashi, who hesitated for a moment before extending his hand to stroke its muzzle. A green aura enveloped Kakashi, whose eyes widened.
"How about it? How do you feel now, Kakashi-sensei?" Naruto asked with a slight smile.
"I feel as if I've almost fully recovered." Kakashi looked at his hands, slowly clenching them into fists. He stood up under the attentive and astonished gazes of everyone. "It's almost as if my fatigue has mostly disappeared." Kakashi fixed his gaze on the deer, then on Naruto. "What exactly did you do?"
"The Round Deer has the ability to heal, similar to what the First Hokage possessed. In fact, his regenerative ability was something the First Hokage learned during his brief stay in Uzushiogakure," Naruto revealed as the stag dissolved into shadows. "Now… let's train! This is getting interesting!"
"That's not interesting," said a boy with a bored expression. He had spiky black hair, covered by a white hat with blue stripes, and dull eyes matching his hair.
"Who are you?" Naruto raised an eyebrow in confusion.
"Oh! Inari! Where have you been?" Tazuna spoke in a voice full of affection, spreading his arms wide for a big hug.
"Grandpa… you're back." Inari removed his shoes and hugged his grandfather.
"You're a good boy, Inari." Tazuna smiled, embracing his grandson.
"Inari, greet these people," Tsunami scolded with a stern voice. "They're the ninjas who protected your grandfather."
Inari glanced at the ninjas with an annoyed look.
"Mom… they're going to die." Inari pointed rudely at the three Genin.
"Rudeness runs in the family, doesn't it?"
Tazuna chuckled slightly, nervously, at Naruto's words.
"Hey, Inari! Listen!" Naruto called out to the boy. "I'm the last descendant of the Uzumaki Royal Family! I'm going to be a hero who will one day become a ninja called Hokage!" he declared with a determined gaze. "I don't know this Gatou, but he's nothing compared to me!"
Inari let out a mocking and contemptuous snort.
"What do you think you are, you idiot? Heroes don't exist."
"What?!" Naruto clenched his jaw, his expression irritated.
"Stop it." Sakura placed a gentle hand on her teammate's shoulder to calm him.
"If you don't want to die, you should leave." Inari looked at them over his shoulder.
"Where are you going, Inari?" Tazuna asked curiously.
"To look at the ocean from my room," he replied before walking away and shutting the door behind him.
"I'm sorry," Tazuna apologized, looking embarrassed.
"It's better if we head out to train as soon as possible," Kakashi said, breaking the spell of awkward silence.
"All right!"
"Not you, Naruto."
"What?!" Naruto turned around with a surprised look.
"That summoning you used to heal me consumed a lot of your chakra, didn't it?" Kakashi gently deduced. "Besides, what I'm about to teach Sakura and Sasuke, you should already have mastered. During my fight with Zabuza, you were able to walk on water."
"But…" Naruto tried to protest, his expression discontented.
"We'll train tomorrow, you and I," Hatake promised with a smile, placing a hand on the boy's shoulder.
Naruto grumbled before slumping down with a sullen expression. His teammates and their teacher left Tazuna's house to train, leaving him behind.
The Uzumaki attempted to lie down on the futon that, just moments ago, had been occupied by his teacher. However, deep sobs and muffled cries resonated in his ears. Naruto frowned and sat up, but the cries weren't coming from Tazuna or his daughter.
"Dad." Inari's soft whimper struck him like a punch, and Naruto's expression softened empathetically.
"I can't just stay here doing nothing while a kid is crying," the Uzumaki thought, standing up with a determined look.
Naruto formed a hand seal and summoned three clones. He then pulled out three crystals from his bag, directing them to dive into training with Kaida, Kaito, and Haruto. Afterward, he took a brush and some ink from his backpack. Rolling up the sleeves of his jacket and pants, he began drawing on his skin.
"What are you doing, kid?" Tazuna asked, confused.
"Creating a seal to increase the weight on my limbs, using it as if they were weights," Naruto replied, focused. After finishing the drawings on his arms and legs, he formed a hand seal.
When the seals activated, a sensation of heaviness began to flood his limbs. It felt as though his arms and legs were made of lead, making it increasingly difficult to move them. Gravity seemed to intensify, pulling his limbs downward with relentless force. His arms dropped violently to his sides, as if an invisible force was pressing them toward the ground, and his legs sank.
Naruto tried to stand up, only to be brought down by his own weight.
"Are you all, right?" Tsunami approached, concerned.
"I'm fine. This isn't the first time it's happened," Naruto said through gritted teeth as he got up.
With a fierce roar, Naruto used his arms as support and slowly began to rise. The process was slow and arduous. By the time he managed to stand upright with determination, Naruto was drenched in sweat. As he bent down to pick up his katana, he nearly fell to the floor but managed to maintain his balance.
He made his way toward the exit door; his steps were slow, and he barely managed to lift his feet off the ground. It was almost as if he were dragging them.
"Where are you going? Sensei said you should stay and rest."
"I can't sit idly by while my teammates are training. Besides, I won't be working on chakra today, I'm just going to train my body." Naruto turned to look at them with a smile. "After all, I'm weak against the tears of a child who misses his father."
Those were his parting words before leaving the house.
"Your opponent is a member of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. Or at least, he was," Kaida said with a somber expression. As soon as Naruto entered the crystal, Kaida began recounting all the events that had occurred during his mission. Kaida asked him to describe Zabuza's sword as soon as Naruto mentioned that he was a swordsman.
"The Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist? What's that?" Naruto tilted his head with a confused look.
"They're cruel, inhuman ninjas who are considered extremely dangerous and skilled swordsmen. Their creation dates back to shortly before the fall of Uzushiogakure, but even back then, their wielders were described as assassins and dangerous criminals." Kaida pursed her lips in disgust. "The first generation, and the most powerful, participated in the extermination of Uzushiogakure."
"Seriously?!" Naruto's eyes widened in surprise.
Kaida nodded.
"Several of my comrades were tortured and massacred by them until they faced the Celestial Demon. She showed those ninjas, who called themselves the most dangerous swordsmen, who truly stood at the pinnacle of swordsmanship. The Celestial Demon killed the first generation in the most brutal way she could imagine. I wasn't there, but I heard some rumors before I died: some of the Seven even begged for mercy during the cruel torment they were subjected to."
Kaida sighed and then shook her head. "To be honest, Naruto, it would be best if you left or avoided a fight against that Zabuza. Even with your level of power, it will be impossible to defeat him."
"But Kakashi-sensei can defeat him!"
"That was because he didn't know the abilities of the Sharingan. He fought without understanding his opponent's strengths, and that's why he was defeated. If, as you say, he's still alive, he won't fall for the same trick twice."
"But I can't abandon my teammates! The people of this country need someone to save them!" Naruto stood up; his fists clenched.
"You're being very arrogant, Naruto!" Kaida retorted, glaring at him with her indigo eyes. "Do you really think a twelve-year-old boy can save a country from a tycoon and one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist?"
Naruto couldn't respond; he only gritted his teeth in frustration. Silence filled the space for a few seconds until Naruto spoke.
"I won't abandon them, Kaida-sensei. I'm sorry, but they need my help," Naruto said firmly.
"Naruto. You're the last descendant of the Uzumaki Royal Family. Think about what that means, about how important you are. You also possess the Ten Shadows Technique of the Shadow Uzumaki. Is it really worth throwing your life away for a country that isn't even yours?"
"And if not, then why was I born with so many gifts?" Naruto replied, determined. "You've always told me I was born to do great things. This is one of those great things!" Naruto struck his chest with a radiant look of confidence. "This country needs someone to show them the path to salvation! And I'll be the one to show them!"
Kaida's eyes narrowed, fixed on Naruto with a piercing glare. Her furrowed brows and clenched jaw bore witness to the intense fury that consumed her over her disciple's arrogance.
Naruto shuddered and took a step back when he felt a strong killing intent emanating from his teacher. He had no time to think or defend himself when he felt his head being severed. His vision turned vertical as his head began to fall to the ground.
"What the hell?! I didn't even see her move!" Naruto blinked, and his vision returned to normal. He gasped; his forehead drenched in sweat. He stumbled backward and fell to the ground, terrified. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, and a chill ran down his spine. Had his head been cut off, or was it an illusion caused by Kaida's killing intent?
Naruto crawled backward, his teeth clenched and his eyes filled with panic. However, for a moment, he glanced at his left hand and the bandages still wrapped around it. The oath. With legs trembling like jelly, the youngest Uzumaki stood up, grabbed his katana, and immediately assumed a combat stance.
"Just like Zabuza, I was called a demon child." Kaida rose slowly, her movements filled with elegance. "My killing intent is so powerful that most children around me used to flee when I got angry." Her hair, red like fresh blood, swayed gently in the wind. "You're one of the few people who can stand firm and ready to fight despite being exposed to my killing intent."
Kaida unsheathed her katana, a beautiful black sword with a vibrant golden edge. "I want to protect you, Naruto, never doubt that, but it's difficult for me when my own student refuses to listen to reason."
"I'm sorry."
"It doesn't matter. You've shown great determination to protect others, and that's admirable." Kaida offered a small smile, just for an instant. "Have you already taken the first pill?"
"How do you know?" Naruto asked after nodding.
"The chakra emanating from you is different. That could only happen after surpassing the first pill." Kaida sighed. "In Uzushiogakure, you would already be officially a Genin. That's why, from now on, your training will be much harder than what you've received over the past three years," Kaida warned seriously. "Will you remain steadfast despite that?"
"Yes!" Naruto narrowed his eyes, his gaze radiant with resolve.
"Good. Because it won't be easy from now on. We're no longer going to practice with wooden swords or continue working on the basics. Your foundations have been well established over these three years. I'm going to teach you the Art of the Demonic Sword," Kaida declared with a cold expression. "What is the real you doing?"
"Training with seals that increase the weight on his limbs."
"That's good. You may have passed the first pill, but that doesn't mean you've adapted to your new strength. Although the benefits of the Black Serpent Pill lie in refining the senses," Kaida admitted with a slight nod. "But we can help you get used to your new senses here inside." She pointed her katana's tip at Naruto. "I'm going to cut you. Your arms, your legs, I'll impale you and even kill you. Will you remain steadfast even after all that pain?"
"Yes!"
"Good."
Naruto's eyes widened, and he turned his gaze over his shoulder to see Kaida behind him.
"I'm not just going to teach you a sword style. Now that you've taken the first pill, you're ready to learn the movement technique of the Uzumaki Celestial Demon: The Burst Step."
