Another time... another place...
In an inner city neighborhood, a school bus stopped in front of a four story apartment building that had most of it's windows boarded up. A short seven year old girl named Kaylyn stepped off the school bus and walked into the apartment building. Kaylyn then got out a key from her pocket and opened up the door the building. Soon, she got another key out to open the door a specific apartment unit. As soon as Kaylyn walked into the apartment building she said, "Mamma. One of the kids at school is having a birthday party on Saturday. Can I go? They gonna have pizza. But I gotta bring a present." Suddenly, Kaylyn heard banging noises coming from a bedroom. Kaylyn opened the door to the bedroom and saw her mother laying on the ground with bruises on her face. Kaylyn's father was standing over her mother with one of his hands clenched into a fist, and the other hand holding on a beer bottle. Kaylyn suddenly looked confused and scared as she said, "Mamma?"
Kaylyn's dad looked turned to look at Kaylyn with an angry face as he said, "Got to your room you brat!" Then a concerned Kaylyn asked, "But what about mamma? She looks hurt." Kaylyn's father then threw his beer bottle to the ground breaking it. Kaylyn screamed for a second in fear. Kaylyn's father then yelled, "I said go to your room! I gave you a freaking TV with freaking Netflix on it! Show some gratitude!" Kaylyn then ran out of the room scared as her father closed the bedroom door behind her. Kaylyn then ran into her own bedroom as she heard the sounds of slaps coming from her parents' bedroom. Kaylyn closed the door to her bedroom, and then quickly turned on the TV.
Suddenly there was a knock on the window to the room. Kaylyn got up and saw standing on the balcony outside her window was Wednesday Addams and Enid Sinclair. Kaylyn made a little smile as she opened up the window, and let Wednesday and Enid step in. A smiling Enid then said, "What's up Kaylyn? Mind if we hang out again with you today?" A happy Kaylyn then said, "Sure. Thanks for coming over. Watcha two wanna do?" Wednesday held her typical deadpan expression as she said, "We have unfortunately lost a member of our team in the Poe Cup. I was hoping this would encourage Enid to forfeit so I wouldn't have to wear a ridiculous cat suit again, but..." Then an excited Kaylyn jumped up and yelled, "I'll join your team!" A happy Enid then handed Kaylyn a pair of fake cat ears while saying, "All right! Welcome to the black cats! So as we head over to Nevermore Academy, why don't you tell us how school was today." As Enid held Kaylyn's hand, a happy Kaylyn said, "Well today in art class, I made a picture of my favorite animals."
Kaylyn was walking down a sidewalk holding the hands of a young adult male and young adult female. As they walked Kaylyn said, "And then Wednesday told Xavier she didn't want to go to the dance with him, but then Wednesday's friend set her up to go to the dance with Tyler. So Xavier got all jealous. But then Wednesday did like the coolest dance ever, and Enid really liked it. Then Wednesday taught me her cool dance after. Don't Enid and Wednesday sound cool Uncle Aaron and Aunt Marissa?" Kaylyn's uncle and aunt smiled a bit as Kaylyn's Uncle Aaron said, "That's nice sweety. And what do your mommy and daddy do when you hang out with Enid and Wednesday?" Kaylyn then looked a bit uncomfortable as she said, "Oh. Well... she and daddy do grown up stuff in their bedroom with daddy's bear drink." Kaylyn's Aunt Marissa looked very confused as she said, "Bear drink?" Kaylyn then said, "I think it's bear drink. It says B-E-E-R on the bottles. Ain't that how you spell bear?" Kaylyn's uncle and aunt looked at each other with concerned looks.
In a small office, Kaylyn's uncle and aunt sat in front of a man in a suit and tie. Kaylyn's uncle then said, "Look. My niece isn't safe living with my sister and her husband. It's a crime ridden neighborhood, and we're pretty sure Kaylyn's father is beating on my sister regularly. It's only inevitable that he'll start beating on Kaylyn. We're providing Kaylyn many of her necessities she needs right now. Why won't you let us simply get custody of her Mr. Han?" Mr. Han sighed, and then said, "Look. Unless Kaylyn's parents give up custody willingly or we have definite signs of physical abuse, we can't take Kaylyn from her home." Kaylyn's aunt then angerly said, "So wait. We have to wait until Kaylyn's father actually beats on his daughter physically before we can actually do something? What about emotional and mental abuse!? No girl deserves to be growing up in that kind of home!" Mr. Han looked down, and then said, "That's the system I'm afraid. It's not a good system, but it's the only one we have. I'm sorry." Kaylyn's uncle then angerly said, "Well you have to change the system. Also, isn't it obvious Kaylyn's needs are being neglected!?" Mr. Han with a straight forward tone said, "She doesn't seem to be malnourished or lacking any clothing." Kaylyn's uncle Arron then yelled, "Because we are providing her with that food and clothing! Are you saying we should stop providing her with that and wait until she's cold and starving for something to happen!?"
Outside the office, Kaylyn sat alone on a bench listening through the door at the conversation that her uncle, aunt, and Mr. Han were having. Suddenly from nearby, Wednesday and Enid appeared and sat down next to Kaylyn. Enid then said, "Hey Kaylyn. We were just passing by on our way back to Nevermore. You feeling sad right now?" Kaylyn sighed and said, "Yeah. Uncle Aaron and Aunt Marissa think my parents aren't good parents, and that my home is a bad home." Wednesday took a deep breath as she said, "Kaylyn... the world is filled with darkness... but you should never allow that darkness to hold you back from discovering your true potential. Just look at myself for example. I endure a consistent barrage of insults from those that would wish to break my spirit; but instead I break my would be abusers... sometimes literally." Kaylyn then looked up at Wednesday as she said, "Yeah. You're so cool. People are mean to you, but you still know how to be so smart and strong." Then a happy Enid said, "And don't forget about being kind. Even though Wednesday acts annoyed at all the bright colors I put in our dorm, she knows I just want to be nice to her. Her words say one thing, but her actions show she loves me. Anyway, tell us about school today Kaylyn." A smiling Kaylyn then said, "Okay. Well in math class, I finally learned how to add numbers with three digits!" Wednesday raised one eyebrow as she said, "Fascinating. Please continue..."
A few weeks later, Kaylyn was getting off the bus again and walked into her apartment. But as soon as she walked into the apartment, she saw her father grabbing her mother and throwing her across the room. Kaylyn's mother hit a wall, and her head began bleeding. Kaylyn's father then yelled, "Where's my money Francine!? I need that fifty bucks for what I'm doing tonight!" Kaylyn's mother cried as she said, "I didn't take it! I swear!" A confused Kaylyn then said, "Mamma, what's going on?" Kaylyn's father then smacked Kaylyn in the face, and pushed her to the ground. Then Kaylyn's father yelled, "Just shut up and go watch Netflix in your room! My God! All you do is get in my way and waste my money! I told you Francine, you should've had that freaking abortion!" Francine's mother cried as she said, "Don't say that! When she's old enough to realize what that means, she'll be traumatized!" Tears appeared in Kaylyn's eyes as she ran into her bedroom and shut the door behind her. Kaylyn then began to hear the sounds of smacking from the other room as she began to feel scared. Then Kaylyn went over to the TV and turned it on.
Then there was a knock on the window. Kaylyn turned her head and saw Wednesday and Enid step into the room. Enid then waved as she said, "Hey Kaylyn. You look really sad today." Kaylyn nodded her head and said, "Mamma is starting to get hurt harder and harder by papa now. I... I'm real scared about what's going to happen." Wednesday then put an arm around Kaylyn as she said, "I understand. When I was stabbed by Joseph Crackstone and was all alone... I thought my life was going to end... that there was no chance of that anything good could happen to me again. However... just as the darkness came in, a light saved me... and it is still possible that a light could still save you." Then Enid made a warm smile as she said, "We can't guarantee when or how it will happen to you Kaylyn... but you cannot give up. The future, no matter how certainly bleak it seems... is still unwritten." Kaylyn then gave Wednesday and Enid each a big hug as she said, "You two are the best friends ever."
A week later, Kaylyn was walking down the sidewalk with her uncle and aunt as she said, "And so Enid gave Wednesday a big hug, and then Wednesday hugged her back. So now they're best friends, which is so cool, because I'm also their best friend." Kaylyn's uncle chuckled a bit as he said, "Well that was a nice story you shared with us Kaylyn. But how about we help you practice for that spelling test now. Can you spell household?" Kaylyn groaned in annoyance for a second, and then said, "Okay. H-o-u-s... Wait. What's going on over there?" Kaylyn and her uncle and aunt looked up ahead and saw police cars outside of the apartment where Kaylyn lived.
A week later, Kaylyn's uncle and aunt were standing in front of a large man outside the door to Kaylyn's apartment. Kaylyn's uncle looked angry as he said, "What do you mean you sold nearly everything in there? It didn't belong to you!" The large man then said, "Hey. I feel bad your sister died, and that her husband is in prison now. However they were over due with their rent payments. I had to cover the costs somehow." Kaylyn's uncle then bitterly said, "But you sold all of my niece's toys, her clothes, her bed. How freaking heartless are you?" The large man then said, "Hey, I didn't sell the TV or cut off the internet connection. So at least you can still stream Netflix in there."
In Kaylyn's bedroom, Kaylyn sat next to Wednesday and Enid as she sadly said, "I'm gonna go live with Uncle Aaron and Aunt Marissa now. They say I'll make new friends in their neighborhood." Enid put an arm around Kaylyn as she said, "Well that's good. You need to make new friends that are like you." Then Kaylyn looked worried as she said, "But I'm gonna miss you two. You're the best friends in the whole world." Wednesday then put an arm around Kaylyn as she said, "Kaylyn... we have provided you comfort and reassurance when no one else could. Our time together was indeed important. But let what you saw in the friendship between myself and Enid help you learn how to find real friendships as you grow up without us." Kaylyn took a deep long breath, and then said, "Well... I'll try." Then Kaylyn stood up... and stopped playing the TV show which was playing on the television screen. The television screen simply displayed the words: "Thank you for watching Wednesday Season 1. What would you like to watch next on Netflix?" Kaylyn turned off the television, and then looked at the completely empty room around her. Kaylyn took a deep breath... and then said, "Thank you Wednesday and Enid... for everything."
The End
