Eddie put her magazine down and looked over at Jamie who just took a seat on the bed. He had a worried look on his face.
"Does Cora seem distant to you Ed?"
Eddie shook her head and looked Jamie in the eye.
"She's a teenager bub. Hence the slamming of doors, the eye rolling and the raging hormones. She's growing up. Whether we like it or not, she's becoming a young woman."
Jamie sighed and hung his head.
"I know. She's 13. She will forever and always be 4 years old. I'm glad she's not going out with boys yet. I'll have to step up into overprotective mode."
Jamie got up from the bed and continued his conversation as he kissed the side of Eddie's head.
"I'm going to say goodnight to Cora."
Eddie nodded but gave him a look.
"Ok, but tread lightly bub."
Jamie quietly padded down the hallway and poked his head inside Cora's room.
"Knock knock. I came to say good night honey."
Poking his head further into the room, Jamie found it was empty. Stepping out of the room and into the hallway, he saw the light in the bathroom was on and the door way closed. He knocked on the door when he heard Cora crying behind it.
"Cora honey. It's dad. You ok in there?"
He heard Cora's voice, but it had a worried edge to it.
"Go away dad. I want mama."
He spoke once more, hoping to get through to her.
"Is there anything I can do?"
Cora answered, her voice quavering slightly.
"No. Go away dad. I want mama."
Jamie sighed and lowered his fist to stop from knocking on the bathroom door further. Walking away, Jamie went back into the bedroom and shook his head.
"Cora locked herself in the bathroom. She only wants to talk to you. She sounds kind of scared."
Eddie got up from the bed and gave Jamie a worried look.
"What's wrong?"
Jamie shrugged his shoulders.
"I don't know babe. Maybe you should talk to her."
Pulling the covers back, Jamie climbed into bed and covered himself with the blanket. It was nearly twenty minutes before Eddie came back. She looked tired. Jamie pulled the covers back on her side of the bed and patted it with his left hand.
"So, what's going on?"
Eddie took a breath and let it out slowly.
"She just got her first period."
Jamie let out a breath he was holding.
"Oh. Baby girl. This is already a confusing time for her. I can go and talk to her."
Eddie shook her head.
"We just talked about it. It's better if she talks about that with me. I know from a medical standpoint you know what your talking about bub. But lets face it, your a guy. You don't have to go through that one once a month."
Jamie nodded, doing his best to understand.
"I do understand from the medical perspective, but as for relating to what she's going through. No. I honestly don't know how I would've explained it to her without making it sound so awkward for her and me."
Eddie threaded a hand through Jamie's left one.
"We are going through the fun stage right now. You've always had my back bub. We're in this together."
"Your buses are here guys! Let's go!"
Cora lies on the couch all rolled up in a ball, a couple of blankets over her. Patrick, Maisie, Keena and Kaitlyn all ran out the door. Jamie gave them all their lunches and waved goodbye to them. Shutting the door, Jamie turned to Cora and knelt next to the couch, running a hand through her hair.
"How are you feeling honey?"
Cora made a face and shifted.
"Uncomfortable."
Jamie kissed Cora's forehead and nodded.
"I know honey. Cramps are a normal part of your period unfortunately."
Cora scrunched her eyes shut and shook her head slowly.
"Daddy…"
He watched as Cora opened up her eyes. Throwing his hands up in mock surrender.
"Ok, I'm sorry. Feel better baby girl. Your mom is getting you a hot water bottle. Should help with the pain, ok?"
Cora nodded and closed her eyes. Jamie shook his head. They had a teenage girl in the house. Patrick was a couple of years behind Cora. He'd have other obstacles to tackle. He ran a hand through her hair one more time and kissed her forehead.
"Feel better honey."
Cora was fast asleep. Eddie came back with a hot water bottle and placed it under the blankets. Meanwhile Jamie placed a pillow behind Cora's back.
"That should help her be less uncomfortable."
Jamie felt bad for Cora, but he was going to leave this up to Eddie. He felt somewhat awkward talking about all this with Cora. They were now raising a teenager.
