"Oooh! Let's have popcorn!"
Cora nodded at her friend Jessie and got up from her spot in the living room floor where all three girls had their sleeping bags.
"I'll be right back."
Entering the kitchen, Cora looked at her dad who was making a sandwich at the island counter.
"Dad, do we have any popcorn?"
Jamie nodded but stopped his motions of making a sandwich.
"We do. You can have popcorn honey. But I want you to chew it very carefully. It's one of those foods that's easy for you to choke on."
Cora rolled her eyes at Jamie and shook her head.
"Daddy, I'll be fine."
Jamie kept looking at Cora seriously.
"I just want you to be careful, ok?"
Cora nodded and took the bag of popcorn out of microwave. Pouring the contents of the bag into a bowl, she left the kitchen. Jamie sighed and shook his head.
"We have a teenager in the house. It was so easy when she was 3."
Cora carried the popcorn into the living room and both Jessie and Natalie cheered.
"Awesome! Popcorn! You saved us from being deprived of snacks!"
Giggling, Cora set the bowl on the floor between the three of them and popped a handful into her mouth. Patrick came up from behind and stole a handful himself, causing Cora to look up at him stopping mid chew. Something didn't feel right. Patrick got a worried look on his face and called for Jamie.
"Dad! Come here! Cora's choking!"
Jamie rushed into the living room, Cora could see him, but she couldn't speak.
"Cora, can you try and cough for me?"
Cora tried to shake her head. Swallowing hard, Jamie got behind Cora and kept his conversation going.
"Ok honey, I'm going to do the Heimlich on you. This might hurt a little bit."
Cora knew what Jamie was talking about. They'd talked a little bit about safety and what to do in case of an emergency. She felt like she was still choking and then all of a sudden, the feeling was gone, and she could breathe again. A coughing fit took a hold of her, and she heard Jamie's voice to the left of her.
"Just breathe honey. You're ok now. Here. Take a drink of water. That's it. Better?"
Cora nodded as the coughing fit stopped and her breath came back to her.
"Yes. Thanks dad. I don't want any more popcorn."
Cora looked over at Jessie who'd had her phone handy and was recording. Jessie shrugged her shoulders.
"What? This is worth its weight in gold. People will know your dad saved your life."
Narrowing her eyes, Cora gave Jessie a look. Her voice still raspy from catching her breath.
"Nothing like that is worth sharing."
Jessie turned her phone towards Cora and smiled.
"Don't worry. See? Only our friends can see it."
Cora looked at Jessie and raised an eyebrow. A trait she'd inherited from Jamie.
"Keep the video but delete it from Tik Tok. Please."
Jessie frowned but nodded in agreement.
"Oook. But look at what the other girls said."
Cora glanced at Jessie's phone.
'Nice save. Your dad's a hero Cora.'
Continuing to read Cora pursed her lips.
"Please delete it. I told you before. I just go on Tik Tok to share videos with you and Natalie. Half of these other people aren't my friends. I don't know who they are."
Jessie tried to make a point.
"Come on. There aren't enough videos out there showing the good side of things. Only bad stuff. This is a win in our book."
Cora shook her head again.
"I have never been one to show off to the world. I like to either keep things to myself or share what I'm going through with you and Natalie. Does privacy mean something to you?"
Now it was Jessie's turn to give Cora a look.
"Uh hello. Privacy is kind of subjective."
Cora kept her eyebrow arched.
"No, it's not. I don't share my location with random people I don't know. My email. None of that. Do you?"
Jessie pulled up her profile.
"What's the big deal?"
Continuing to frown Cora pointed at her profile.
"What's the big deal? Well for starters, what if some creepy stalker tries to contact you? They know your address your full name. Your email. Everything. That's a big deal Jessie."
Natalie took a moment to put in her two cents.
"She's right Jessie. Look at my profile. Everything that identifies me is set to private. I don't have my email, my address or my birthday listed on here."
Jessie let out a dry laugh.
"I still don't see what the big deal is."
Cora took a step forward.
"If likes and follows is all your looking for Jessie. You can leave right now. I'm not interested in someone who just wants to be liked because they post a video of themselves or someone else."
Jessie closed her phone and started gathering her things.
"So, you don't want to be friends with me anymore because I shared a video of you being saved by your own dad with 'total strangers'?"
Cora felt her nose flare, her eyebrow still arched.
"Yes."
Jessie had fire in her eyes, and she threw invisible daggers at Cora.
"Well, I am blocking you on Tik Tok, Instagram and Snap Chat."
Cora shrugged and acted like Jessie's attitude didn't bother her. But it did.
"That's fine. I don't know what'd gotten into you."
Jessie had gathered up her things and completely ignored Cora. Looking to Jamie.
"Mr. Reagan, could you please take me home?"
Jamie sighed and nodded.
"Of course."
Cora watched as Jamie held a hand out and motioned to Jessie to go towards the front door. She shook her head as the two disappeared behind the front door and it closed. Natalie pulled Cora into a hug.
"Don't worry about her Cora. I don't know what's gotten into her. She's been doing a lot of weird things lately. I'm about ready to drop her as a friend too."
Eddie sat and watched from the kitchen entrance with a sad look on her face.
"I'm sorry about your friend baby girl."
