Patrick looked down at his little brother Liam. He finally had a little brother he could show the ropes to so to speak. He wrinkled up his nose and started to cry. Patrick sat wide eyed for a second and then sniffed the air.
"Oh. You stink baby bro. How about we change your diaper."
Jamie happened to be passing by Patrick's room when he heard Liam start crying.
"Everything ok in here bud?"
Patrick smiled and then grimaced.
"Yeah. We're ok dad. Liam just needs a diaper change."
Jamie stepped into his oldest son's room and pulled out a clean diaper from his back pocket.
"In that case bud, do you need any help?"
Patrick was hesitant.
"I think I can give it a try by myself. I'm so used to Cora helping me change his diaper. But I'll have to learn to do it myself. I'm his big brother after all."
Jamie was about to scoop Liam up from the bed when Patrick did it instead.
"Mind his head there bud. There you go."
Patrick carried Liam back to his nursery and set him on the changing table. Jamie handed him the clean diaper.
"You might want to hold off on taking his diaper off for a minute. Boys tend to pee."
Patrick shrugged his shoulder.
"He hasn't done that to me so far."
Jamie gave Patrick a hard to read look.
"Trust me bud. All boys do it. You did it as a baby too. So did I according to poppy."
Patrick proceeded to undo Liam's dirty diaper, and he made a face putting his hands up in front of it.
"Gross! He peed on me!"
Jamie was quick to close Liam's diaper and give Patrick a sympathetic/half amused look.
"I've got this bud. Go get washed up."
Patrick gave a groan of frustration and left the nursery.
"Gross!"
Eddie crossed paths with Patrick as he exited the nursery.
"What happened Pat?"
Patrick mumbled loudly behind his hands.
"Liam peed on me!"
Eddie tried to stifle a laugh.
"I'm sorry honey. Go wash up."
Entering the room, Eddie looked over at Jamie who was changing Liam's diaper, and he was very upset.
"I know bud. Daddy has to get you all cleaned up. Almost done, ok?"
Eddie gave Liam a sympathetic look and went on the other side of Jamie, running a finger alone his left arm, which was flailing. He settled somewhat and Jamie finished putting a fresh diaper on him.
"There that wasn't so bad now was it bud? All clean. Nice and dry. Should we go and check on your brother?"
As Jamie was about to pick Liam up, Patrick came back into the nursery.
"No need dad. I'm here. I went to wash my face and brush my teeth."
Eddie couldn't help herself.
"I had that happen to me too Pat. It's ok. Next time keep the diaper closed for a minute."
Patrick let out another frustrated groan.
"I've changed him lots of times and he never did that to me before. What are you feeding him to make his go so much mom?"
Eddie again gave Patrick a sympathetic look.
"I'm sorry that happened to you honey. I'm feeding him formula."
Patrick raised an eyebrow. He looked so much like Jamie it was uncanny.
"You mean he's not getting his food from you mom?"
An awkward silence fell in hushed tones in the room suddenly and Jamie cleared his through to help clear that silence.
"Pat bud, I'm not sure that's an appropriate question to be asking mom."
Patrick simply shrugged his shoulders.
"What? It's not like I don't know that mom hasn't breastfed all of us."
Eddie could only stare at her oldest son for a second before she answered.
"Honey, have you um… Been talking your sister again?"
Patrick shook his head and watched Liam for a moment. Looking up at Eddie he made a face.
"Nah. I hear things."
This made Jamie nervous.
"What other things have you been hearing bud?"
Patrick felt like he was backed into a corner.
"Cora has been talking to a boy from her class and he asked her if she wanted to come to his house."
Jamie felt his defenses go up. He wasn't about to let his 14-year-old daughter get herself into trouble.
"Knock. Knock. How's it going in here baby girl?"
Cora ushered Jamie into her room, and he noticed she was talking to a boy with dark hair and hazel eyes over a video chat.
"Hey Eric. I want you to meet my dad. Jamie."
Jamie politely waved at Eric.
"Nice to meet you, Eric."
Eric seemed nervous but politely responded back.
"Nice to meet you too Mr. Reagan."
Jamie sat on the edge of Cora's bed, and she quickly finished her conversation.
"Hey so Eric. I gotta go. So, I'll see you tomorrow night?"
Eric nodded his head over the video screen.
"We're going to have so much fun. I promise it'll be a night to remember."
The video went dark and Cora shut her laptop sighing. She was happy. She really liked this boy. The smile slid from her face as she turned to Jamie.
"What's wrong daddy?"
A frown was plastered on Jamie's face.
"I think it's time we had the talk."
Cora gave Jamie a hard stare.
"Daddy, I've already had the talk with mama."
The frown still stayed plastered on Jamie's face.
"Honey, I know you really like Eric, and you want to hang out with him and get to know him. But I want you to be responsible. Be a kid and have fun."
Cora looked at Jamie with that same hard stare.
"Dad, we're not going to have sex if that's what you're thinking."
Jamie remained calm. He was a teenager once. It had been a very confusing time.
"Look if you want to hang out with Eric that's fine. But supervised and not alone in a room behind a closed door. I was a teenager once. 14-year-old boys, they have a hard time controlling themselves sometimes. I don't want to see you get hurt."
Cora crossed her arms and began to pout.
"Dad. It's a party. All my friends are going."
Jamie felt a pit begin to form in his stomach.
"Are other boys going to be there?"
Cora nodded.
"Yes. But we're just going to hang out."
Jamie shook his head.
"I know what these parties are like honey. There's usually alcohol and the parents are nowhere to be found. I don't think it's a good idea that you go to that party tomorrow."
Cora turned on the waterworks hoping Jamie would give in.
"Daddy! It's going to be the most epic party! Please let me go!"
Jamie wasn't going to give in. He wasn't going to let his baby girl get into a situation she felt she couldn't get out of. He had to protect her.
