"Strong pillars."

Eddie looked up at Jamie, propping herself up on her right elbow.

"Huh?"

Now Jamie was leaning up on his left elbow and was mere inches from Eddie's face.

"Strong pillars. It's what our marriage is based on. We've weathered a lot of different storms over the years. With our jobs, the kids, us… But we've always stuck together babe. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world."

"Pat! I got you a cookie! It's peanut butter. It was my friend Amanda's birthday today. Here."

Patrick took the cookie from his sister Maisie and smiled.

"Thanks kid."

Maisie looked at Patrick expectantly.

"Wanna play Monopoly with me?"

Patrick smiled but shook his head.

"Sorry kid. No can do. I've got a lot of homework to do. Maybe we can ask dad if we can do family game night this weekend."

Maisie's eyes lit up.

"YAY! I'll go ask daddy!"

Patrick smiled as Maisie left the room and he popped the cookie in his mouth, chewing it. Swallowing it, he thought it had a taste of chocolate in it. Less than a minute later, he had that weird taste in the back of his throat, and he felt his throat beginning to swell. He had to get his epinephrine shot. He gasped and managed to get towards his open door before he fell onto his side. He swore he could see his dad from the corner of his eye.

"Hey Pat, what do you say we order a pizza tonight for dinner…"

Patrick struggled to reach for Jamie. Jamie continued talking to him.

"Pat, is your epinephrine injector in the bathroom?"

Patrick managed to nod his head.

"Ok, I'll be right back. Everything's going to be ok bud."

Jamie was back in a flash, and he had a look of worry on his face.

"Not in the bathroom bud. I have one in my bag I can give you. I'm sorry this is going to hurt bud."

Patrick felt his eyes getting heavy and his vision was turning white. He could still hear his dad's voice, but it was far away.

"Ed! Call a bus!"

Patrick opened his eyes. He was groggy. He was confused for a moment when he didn't recognize where he was at. Clearing his throat, he slowly turned his head to find his mom sitting next to him, her hand in his.

"Hey honey. Your awake. I'll text your dad really quick."

Patrick cleared his throat again and tried to speak up, but it was a whisper.

"Where am I mom?"

Eddie ran a hand through Patrick's hair.

"Baby, you're in the hospital. You had an allergic reaction to the peanut butter cookie you ate. It had chocolate in it. Maisie didn't know. When your up to it, she wants to apologize."

Patrick was about to speak again when he saw Jamie enter the room.

"Hey bud. It's dad. How are you feeling?"

Patrick shifted in the bed slightly and gave him a lopsided smile.

"Kind of groggy. I thought I tasted chocolate in that peanut butter cookie."

Jamie, seemingly forever in doctor mode, checked the leads attached to Patrick and correlated with the machine next to the bed.

"Can you lean forward for me bud? There we go."

Patrick leaned forward with Jamie's help.

"Dad, I'm not a baby…"

Jamie nodded his head and put the earpieces of his stethoscope in his ears.

"I know you're not bud. Take a deep breath for me. There we go. Another one. That's it. Your lungs are clear."

Patrick nodded and yawned.

"My leg kind of hurts."

Jamie winced and gave him a sympathetic look.

"I know. Sorry bud. You're going to have a bruise from the epinephrine I injected you with."

Patrick leaned back against the pillows.

"When can I go home dad?"

Jamie gave a small smile.

"As soon as your doctors give you a clean bill of health bud. Which should be very soon. I'll see if I can find your doctor. Hang tight bud."

Patrick sighed and looked over at Eddie.

"Mom come on. I'm fine. See? Can we go now?"

Eddie shook her head and smoothed some hair out of Patrick's face.

"You need a haircut honey. Not until the doctors sign off on it ok. I know it's hard to be patient."

Patrick moved his head slightly.

"Mom…"

Eddie made a face.

"I'm sorry honey, am I embarrassing you?"

Patrick arched his eyebrow; he looked so much like Jamie.

"A little. I'm fine."

Eddie smirked and shook her head and then whispered in his left ear.

"I promise I won't tell anyone about Mr. squiggles."

Patrick's eyes went wide with panic, and he looked around the room, unsure if anyone heard.

"Mom! Don't tell anyone about Mr. squiggles."

Mr. Squiggles was Patrick's stuffed black lab from when he was 2. He still slept with it sometimes. She giggled and pulled it out from under his pillow.

"Oh, come on Pat, no one is going to think it's weird. He was keeping you safe while you slept."

Patrick one last time looked around and then placed a kiss to the stuffed animals head.

"Put him with the rest of my stuff mom. Please."

Eddie tried to stifle a smile that was coming to her lips. Jamie re-entered the room and a smile came to his face.

"Oh. Mr. Squiggles. I haven't seen him in a while. I wonder where he's been hiding."

Eddie quickly placed the stuffed animal in Patrick's bag in the drawer under the bed. Patrick looked at Jamie.

"Dad, can we talk about that later please?"

Jamie nodded and gave him a small smile.

"Ok Pat. Your doctor is on his way. Hang tight."

Sighing, Patrick kept looking at Jamie.

"Hospitals smell. I just want to be home."

"Come in."

Standing in the doorway of Patrick's bedroom was Maisie. She was a little apprehensive at first.

"Pat, I'm sorry."

Patrick gave Maisie a sympathetic look and patted the bed next to him.

"Come here kid."

Maisie was struggling to climb onto the bed, so Patrick helped her up.

"Thank-you Pat. I'm sorry about the cookie."

Patrick pulled Maisie into a hug.

"It's ok. You didn't know. But remember what dad said? If we get cookies from the store, look at the box it comes in, we always read the labels on them to make sure it's something we can eat."

Maisie let go of Patrick and looked at him.

"You sound like daddy Pat."

Patrick rolled his eyes.

"I know."

Maisie smiled over at Patrick, and he brought his hand up to her side and started tickling her. She erupted into laughter.

"Pat!"

He hadn't realized both Jamie and Eddie were standing in the doorway watching the sibling's bond with one another. Things were just right at the moment.
