(A/N) Really? Starting the shipping already, guys? I was just trying to give Peter a few moments with the campers to build relationships with them.
Well, like I said, I have the vote for what you guys want to see, and I am always keeping that in mind while writing.
So we are all on the same page: I like Sammy. I have no problem with Sammy. I am only saying this because this chapter might come across as I find her irritating. I mean, she is at times, but it comes from a good heart in my mind, at least. And I did kinda hate her my first exposure to her first time starting the show but I grew to like her.
After taking about a dozen showers, Dadius and Kenji joined everyone else for a small campfire moment while they were eating. As they did so, Darius decided to try and tell a campfire story. He placed now hood up to try and make a better dramatic telling of the story. The only one who wasn't around was Yazmania who was off on her own.
"We thought it'd be fun." Darius began while the fire began crackling. "We thought we'd be safe, but we didn't realize the horror waiting for us on the island. Claws. Teeth. Screaming." Sammy gasped. "So much screaming."
"How much screaming?" Ben asked, seemingly becoming afraid, clinging to Peter who let the kid do so.
"Shh!" Kenji said. "He's getting to the good part."
"The T-rex stalked closer." Darius continued. "Her jaws opened wide." Then a camera shutter clicks. "What?"
"What? Huh?" Kenji asks, everyone begins looking to see if it came from Brooklynn.
"For the vlog," Brooklynn explained. "Keep telling your little story."
Darius sighed as he placed his hood back up. "Oh, here we go," Kenji said.
"The T-rex sta-"
"Dang!" Brooklynn groaned as her phone stopped. "Ugh! Out of space. Wait, I'm sorry, hold on. I just don't wanna delete my selfie on Everest, you know?"
"You didn't think to clear your phone before coming here?" Peter asked her. "I didn't even bring my phone and I still did that."
"Ooh!" Sammy said, looking at the photo of her on Everest.
"Maybe I should start over." Darius sighed.
Ben cried out in terror. "No! In fact, you can just stop."
"Dude, chill. He's not even telling the story right now." Kenji stated.
Peter felt Ben grip his arm tighter. "And how is your grip this strong?" He lightly pulled Ben off of him. "Like... wow."
"So, the T-rex stalked-"
"Shouldn't we call Yasmina over?" Sammy asked, looking to see Yaz leaning on the railing with some sort of book. "I bet she'd love this story."
"I think she wants to be by herself," Peter said, seeing she was more introverted than outgoing.
"I don't understand," Sammy tells him with a blank expression.
Peter wasn't sure how much more obvious he could make this to her. "Okay... someone else wanna try to explain this?"
"You know how sometimes people just wanna be left alone?" Kenji tried to explain.
That only got Sammy to burst out into laughter. "Kenji, you're hilarious!" She then looked back to Yaz. "I think she's just shy and doesn't know how to make camp friends."
Before anyone else could try to explain, there was a sudden thunder strike, getting them to look up and see a storm was starting. The rain began to pour down on them as they all stood up.
"Maybe we should go inside," Sammy said, covering her head.
Ben was already running past, heading inside. "Way ahead of you!"
Everyone else was quick to follow, heading inside. "Hurry!"
"Aw, man!"
"Oh, it's coming down fast."
"Well, that was a waste of time."
Darius leaned down on the bench and sighed. "Thanks, Brooklynn."
"I wouldn't take it personally, man," Peter said, spooking Darius back to sit up when he saw Peter was still there. "Brooklynn seems to be the kind of girl that likes to share with the world."
"What... I thought.." Darius did a double take, thinking he went inside. "How did you...?"
"I didn't leave," Peter shrugged. "I'm a New Yorker. We've survived alien invasions yearly. A little rain doesn't kill us." He said as he raised his hood as Yaz made her way inside. "I don't think Brooklynn realized she ruined your story. She isn't as socially awkward as I am, but I don't think she knows how to interact with real people. People who aren't there for her videos. Like how she got us kicked from the lab. She wasn't exactly thinking of the group, but rather her videos."
Darius sighed as he began to understand what he was saying. "Yeah, I get that." He then became a little curious. "How are you this good at understanding people, but don't have friends?"
"It's more of a purposeful thing." Peter shrugged. "I go to a school for higher learning because my dad can afford it, and I got in doing this exam my old school gave out. They recruit bright kids or kids whose parents have fat checkbooks."
Darius was starting to understand a few things as he pointed to the doors. "Oh, that's why you-"
"Mocked Kenji the first chance I got a sense of what he was?" Peter saw what he was thinking. "Kenji reminded me of my bully back home. Flash Thompson. He's a pain. I get the full bully experience from him. He got in because of some football thing, and his parents were rich enough to pay for him to get in. I was not going to deal with Kenji becoming a second Flash. But... He seems to have cooled down since then, he seems to really care, it's just hidden underneath a shell of overconfidence."
"That would be a good way of putting it." Darkus guessed, watching the fire get put out by the fire.
"Thought your story was pretty engaging as well," Peter said in encouragement as he stood up. "We should head inside. This rain is fogging my glasses." They started to head in. "Oh, but I wouldn't go spreading that kind of story when you are on a secluded island surrounded by dinosaurs. It's kinda like telling a mentally insane story in a mental asylum. You saw how Ben reacted to the setup.
"Yeah, but that's what makes it fun." Darius defended as they entered the living area.
Darius headed off towards the dorm rooms while Peter saw Richard in the kitchen looking over his phone. He walled over and noticed his dad looked stressed.
"You okay, dad?" Peter wondered as he took his glasses off to wipe down.
"Yeah, I think so," Richard said with a sigh. "Just our timetable for our new attraction has been moved up. Masrani is coming by to see the attraction tomorrow. Hopefully, our investors are going to love it."
"What exactly is this new attraction?" Peter wonders.
"Can't say much," Richard sighed as he leaned on the fridge, looking down at his phone. He then rubbed his head. "Trust me, kid, work in a normal lab. Helping run an amusement park is exhausting, at least in the lab you don't have to give birth to new dinosaurs every few months to keep investors happy."
"I will keep that in mind," Peter said, reaching over and grabbing a handful of M'Ms they had in the bowl.
The spider from yesterday began to crawl its way down Peter's hood, heading for the back of his neck. "Oh, watch it, kiddo, you got a spider."
"Huh?" Peter asked, looking back and seeing the spider. "Oh," he then flicked the spider, not enough to kill it, but enough to send it flying. The spider crawls off, running towards its home in Peter's bunk. "I swear, there's a bunch of those guys around here."
"Well, that's what we get for opening a two-hundred-room facility for only seven kids." Richard joked, getting Peter to nod.
"You need a friend!" The two shrieked as they turned to the couch area, seeing Sammy sitting beside Yaz.
Yaz seemed to yelp as well as she clung to her book. "What?"
"I'm such a ding-dong!" Sammy said as she sat next to Yaz. "You're alone. And when I feel alone, having a friend around sure is nice." She was spewing words so fast they almost sounded like one word. "I could use a friend, and you probably could, too. So I thought, "Yasmina needs someone to make the first friendship move," so, here I am!"
"Um, I lost you around "ding-dong"." Yaz comments.
"She lost me at "friend"," Richard commented, taking a drink of water.
Sammy then gasped, getting their attention. "Is that a scrapbook? I love scrapbooking. We can make one together. Pull you out of your shell."
"I'm pretty happy in my shell," Yaz said, clutching her scrapbook.
"No one likes the shell," Sammy stated as if it was a true fact. "It stops people from getting to know you."
"Bingo!" Yaz said as she stood up and walked away.
"I know you're just shy!" Sammy cheerfully cried out.
"Can't hear you in my shell!" Yaz cried as she walked off.
"Wow, and here I thought that was a TV cliché that Texans had that kind of energy," Peter commented.
"What TV have you been watching?" Richard wonders.
"I was sorta going off of SpongeBob for my statement." Peter shrugged.
"Well, I don't know if I agree with you on that, but I do agree on her energy," Richard commented. "Reminds me of your aunt when we were about a few years older than you kids."
"Seriously?" Peter asks, wanting to hear more.
"Oh, yeah," Richard sighed as he leaned on the counter, remembering that day. "I didn't wanna go out one day, but it was college, we just got past the first semester, I wanted to sleep but by some miracle, Ben talked me into going out." He then stared off as he remembered it. "I was out of touch, didn't know what to do. Then there she was... Maybelle Fitzpatrick. She and your uncle had barely gotten to know each other, but she seemed to fit right into the party environment like she was the queen. She saw me sulking in the corner and tried to get me out of my shell."
"How'd she manage to do that?" Peter wonders.
"Oh, no, she failed spectacularly." Richard laughed. "No, I couldn't do it. I felt like all eyes were on me. I wanted to shrink into my shell and vanish."
"So what happened?" Peter wonders, this being the longest he and his dad have talked about the past.
"Your mother." This was the first time he had ever mentioned Mary to Peter. He sighed as he seemed to disappear into the memory. "May had dragged her along, and she also seemed like she didn't want to be there either. We snuck off, leaving Ben and May, and found a secluded corner. We got to talking, we started to find mutual ground on the idea neither of us wanted to be there."
"Wow." Peter chuckled.
"But if neither of us were there that day, imagine, we wouldn't have you today," Richard said as he walked over and held his son by the shoulders. "That's what got me out of my shell. Sammy has a... interesting approach, but I have a feeling Yaz needs a more subtle approach."
"I miss her." Peter sighed, becoming a little sorrowful as he thought of his mom.
"Yeah, me too, kiddo." Richard sighed as he held his son. He then saw the time. "Well, you should head off to bed. Early rise tomorrow."
"Why? What is going on tomorrow?" Peter wonders.
Richard chuckled as he took a sip of the tea he somehow made without Peter seeing. "I'm not one to spoil a surprise."
Turns out the next day's activity was riding in gyrospheres. They were brought to a clearing where they had fully charged Gyrospheres waiting for them.
"Yes!"
"This is gonna be so much fun!"
"Oh, man! I'm driving."
"We get to drive gyrospheres?" Darius asked. "Cool!"
"Saddle up, dudes and dudettes," Dave tells them. "We're going on a cattle drive, but with dinosaurs! It's a dino drive!"
"You are making me regret calling it that on the brochure," Richard tells Dave.
"And just to be clear, all these dinosaurs are herbivores, right?" Ben asked in fear.
"Well, they only chewed on the last kid a little, so we're, like, 99 percent sure they're cool," Roxie said jokingly.
But her words only began to make Ben whimper.
"Relax, Ben, it'll be fine," Peter said, looking over toward the spheres.
"Park personnel are moving a group of dinosaurs to fresh grazing lands across the island, and we get to ride along behind the herd," Roxie explained how this works.
"Are you kidding me?" Darius asked in shock. "Dinosaur migration patterns are my jam!"
"You may wanna consider a new jam, bro," Kenji stated as he walked past. "So, uh, you sure these things are waterproof? Looking pretty grim out here and hair this awesome does not come easy.
"Your hair is gonna be fine, Kenji," Dave promised, looking at the report. "Storm has already moved up the coast away from us."
"Cool! Time to show these fools what a GyroSphere master can do." Kenji said, heading for the Gyrospheres."
Roxie quickly crushed those dreams. "No way!" She then gestured towards one with Ben inside. "You are riding with Ben, as a passenger."
"But- Seriously? But he's so..." Kenji groaned.
They watched Ben struggle at the wheel as he slammed forward, coming to a quick stop, and slamming on the window. "Whoa!"
"Live it up, tough guy," Roxie said as she gestured him to the vehicle.
Yaz put herself in the driver's seat and got herself buckled in one of the Gyrospheres. "This is gonna be so sick."
Peter walked over to her sphere and knocked on the glass. "Hey, sorry, but mind if we shared a sphere? Kinda an odd number of us, and only so many spheres."
"Oh, uh..." Yaz didn't know how to politely turn him down.
"Just a quick warning, I don't think Sammy is going to let this one go," Peter warned her, getting Yaz to see Sammy over at the empty solo seating one, eyeing the one she was in.
"Okay, I see your point." Yaz didn't seem to want a repeat of last night. "Get in."
"Great," Peter said as he jumped in. "Two introverts in a glass ball. Let's see what comes of it."
Yaz rolled her eyes but there was a slight smile on her face, enjoying his attempt at humor. "Yay..."
"Everyone, seat belts at all times," Dave asked, seeing everyone in the gyrospheres, except for Darius.
"Well, what you waiting for, kiddo?" Richard asked him, gesturing over to Brooklynn. "There's one GyroSphere remaining."
"Right." Darius didn't seem interested in sharing one with Brooklynn after last night. "Um, is there a GyroSphere I could drive solo or-"
"Darius, you need to ride with your fellow campers. Bond, live the camp life, share your story, man." Dave tells him.
"Yeah, I tried last night, but, um not everyone was on board."
"Buddy, you can't give up." Dave encouraged him. "You need to get out there and you show those other kids what you got. Be yourself, Darius."
"Teenagers can be very accepting if you just give them half a chance," Roxie promised.
Richard gave her a look when Darius walked over to the GyroSphere. "Do they not have teenagers in England?"
"Your son is accepting." Roxie reminded him.
"He did not get that from me, trust me," Richard stated with a chuckle.
Everyone got into their vehicles and the doors closed as they prepared to head out. The adults had a jeep to follow them inside as they got inside and began to drive ahead. They had given the kids all small radios that fit inside their ears that they could use to contact them.
"All righty, campers," Dave said as he used the radio.
"The headsets are for emergencies. You can always reach us on channel six." Roxie tells them.
"Let the herding begin!" Dave cheered.
And with that, the campers were off, zipping past the jeep, making their way past and into the hearing area.
"Whoo! See ya!"
"Yes!"
"See ya!"
Then they head as something crashes into the back of their jeep. Looking backward, they noticed that it was Ben and Kenji's GyroSphere, which ran into them going backward.
"Okay, now." Ben tried to get a hand on the controls. "Uh, slow and steady wins the race."
Ben then started to try and get them going, which only ended with them slowly spinning around as they tried to catch up. Kenji showed a blank face of no emotion as he stared at the adults with that expression. Roxie offered a wave, Dave only smiled, and Richard was holding back a laugh from the back seat.
"Huh! I'm really getting the hang of this!"
Reaching the clearing, they were driving alongside Jurassic World professionals who were heading the dinosaurs, keeping them all in line and not hearing off into the jungle. As they did, the others were riding alongside them while Peter and Yazmania found the video that they played on the screens for first-time riders.
"Hey, there." Jimmy Fallon greeted them, dressed like a scientist and had a schematic of the GyroSphere behind him. "I'm Jimmy Fallon. Welcome aboard the GyroSphere, an amazing machine made possible by science. Your safety is our main concern. Which is why you're behind our invisible barrier system, which protects you from things like Dilophosaurus venom." He had a canister of it, which he accidentally spun too fast, causing an explosion and getting some on his fingers and face. "One drop of this can paralyze you, so watch out...Is this real? It is?" And with that, Fallon fell over and fainted.
Peter and Yaz looked at one another, then back to the screen. "I can't tell if they just couldn't afford Jimmy for more than one take, or that was a joke."
Yaz chuckled. "Well, I am going to say joke since he isn't paralyzed since my mom watches his show."
"They never said it was permanent," Peter replied.
"And for added protection, each vehicle is surrounded by aluminum oxynitride glass." Jimmy Fallon continued. "So tough, it can stop a. 50-caliber bullet."
Then he shot the gun at the glass on a display, which sent the display flying backward and shattering the cabinets behind it. "The Gyroscopic technology will keep you upright at all times. So, sit back, and enjoy."
Peter and Yaz then went into silence as they enjoyed the view as they drove alongside a Brachiosaurus. The creature bellowed as they rode alongside it and spotted Darius and Brooklynn across from them.
"So, you mind if I ask you something?" Peter asked her.
"If you have to." Yaz seemed less than ready to answer the questions.
"You seem a bit... closed off, which I am not saying is a bad thing," Peter said as he fixed his glasses, something he did when he was nervous. "Don't get me wrong, I am a worse introvert than you, I can tell. So, why would you wanna come to this?"
Yaz nodded and saw he had a fair question. "Well, Jurassic World is my corporate sponsor. So, they approached me with this and said that this was just a favor they would ask and would keep funding me."
"Kinda sounds like you were blackmailed to be here," Peter commented.
"No, it's more..." Yaz was trying to defend it, but realized he was right. "Okay, wow, I might have been blackmailed." She had a small crisis to hear that out loud. "What about you? You're an introvert, how'd you end up here?"
"Well, as you saw, my dad took a job volunteering here as he wants to try and spend more time with me." Peter sighed as he leaned back. "We haven't gotten to see each other much since he took the job to come here."
"At least your dad is trying." Yaz scoffed as she looked out to a triceratops being headed back into the group by a Jurassic World employee on a vehicle. "Mine left when I was barely a year old."
"Off. Sorry," Peter said as he readjusted his glasses again.
Yaz happened to notice him do so and looked at him. "Have you always worn those glasses? I don't remember seeing them on the boat. Or the ride to the camp."
"They're reading glasses mostly, I wore them in the labs." Peter shrugged. "I have 20/30 vision. Lost one of my contacts during that pen incident, so I keep these on hand. Something happens, I am going to wanna read the signs that say 'danger' and 'safety'."
Yaz laughed at that joke. "Yeah, staying alive is a good motivation. So, if your dad is barely around, who did you stay with?"
"I live with my aunt," Peter answered. "Back in Queens."
"Hm," Yaz said, seemingly ending their conversation there.
"So, I know you don't wanna talk about it, but I might wanna warn you, I have a feeling Sammy isn't going to give up on getting through to you."
"Oh, right, you saw that, huh?" Yaz said as she blushed a little, moving some loose hair out of her face.
"She seems to be the kind of girl who doesn't understand being alone," Peter tells her with a laugh. "If there is no one around, I could see her taking to the animals on the farm."
Yaz chuckled a little, eyeing the GyroSphere with Sammy inside and she quickly waved at them. "Yeah, you might be onto something."
"Yeah, she is the kinda girl who I could see making friends with strangers off the street after knowing them for five seconds," Peter tells Yaz. "Just saying, I get the idea of staying in your shell, but these guys are pretty cool." He then looked away with a slight stern. "Kenji I am still getting a feel for it. But these guys seem safe enough you can let your guard down. Out of all, I'd trust Sammy the most to not share anything. Something about her tells me she can keep a secret."
"You should go into therapy," Yaz tells Peter with a chuckle.
"How awesome is this?" Darius asked Brooklynn, watching the dinosaurs being heard across the field. "We're, like, so close! Brooklynn?"
Brooklynn was looking over her phone. "Used to be cool?" She began to read the comments on her videos. "You made Jurassic World boring? Lame. Lame. No one likes you anymore."
"Uh, hey, can you believe that an ankylosaurus' tail is strong enough to shatter bone?" Darius tried to get her to focus on something other than her phone.
"Can you believe I don't care?" Brooklynn asked in an annoyed tone, but she seemed to regret saying that the moment she said it. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I- I'm just having one of those days." Darius looked over to her, wanting her to elaborate on that. "There's a lot of pressure when your whole life is about being popular, and I'm not like you. I can't just tell a lame story and move on."
"It wasn't that lame," Darius muttered to himself.
"Trust me, it was." Brooklynn still heard him. "It totally was, but you're not even fazed. I just need people to... to like m- You wouldn't understand."
Kenji had enough of this as he was stuck behind everyone with Ben. "Of course, I don't understand, 'cause you are literally the worst driver I've ever seen, bruh."
"If by "worst" you mean "safest," then, yes, yes, I am," Ben stated as he kept them at a slow pace.
"So not a compliment," Kenji said in a groan. "Now, come on. Faster, faster, faster!"
But up above them, the thunder rumbled as the adults in the jeep noticed the storm was coming back around.
"I thought you said the storm rolled up the coast," Roxie said to Dave.
"Oh, it must have rolled back down."
"It should be okay," Richard commented. "A little rain won't harm them in the Gyrospheres."
"He's right." Dave agreed. "Other than mussing up Kenji's hair, what's the worst that could happen?"
Then they heard louder thunderous crashes, which ended up spooking one of the Stegosaurus. It raised on its hindlegs, bellowing in fear of the weather. When it landed down, its tail then smacked into an ankylosaurus, causing it to roar and it seemed like the two of them were going to begin fighting. The adults all shared one look, and they all seemed to agree that this was not an environment to bring the kids into.
Driving ahead of the kids, they drove and turned the truck to cause them all to stop. Everyone left their rides so they could see and hear what is going on.
"Hey, gang, new plan," Dave tells them. "The storm's getting worse, so we're all going back to camp. Fun, right?"
"Aw, man!"
"Are you serious?"
"It was just getting good."
"Don't blame me. Blame the storm." Dave tells them.
"I blame them both," Roxie said, leaning ahead to be seen behind Dave.
"We're not gonna let a little rain stop us, are we?" Darius asks. "When else will we get the chance to ride alongside a herd of dinosaurs?"
"Sorry, can't risk it," Dave tells him.
"But, Dave, I'm sure under you and Roxie's capable leadership, we'll-"
"This is not up for discussion," Roxie informed them as she picked up a radio, hearing a static crackle. "Hello, hello! Roxie here. Can you hear me? Anyone?"
All she heard back was static as the storm seemed to be messing with their radio frequency.
"Okay, new, new plan. Storm's interfering with the radio, so Richie, Rox, and I will drive ahead and tell the others we're pulling out." Dave tells them as he gets back in the car. "We'll be right back."
"Don't ever call me Richie again," Richard warns Dave and then addresses the kids. "Stay in your vehicles, stay together, and stay behind the herd."
Then the three adults drove off to inform the others what they were planning to do. Everyone else headed back into their GyroSphere and watched from a distance. Thunder striking again caused one of the dinosaurs to run away and head its way toward the jungle for safety. Darius waited to see if anyone noticed it run off, but it seemed to have gotten past all of them.
"That Sinoceratops is gonna get lost," Darius said to Brooklynn. "We need to go after her."
"You heard Dave," Brooklynn said as she stopped looking at her phone. "Let's just chill out and wait here."
"I've read everything about sinoceratops' behavior," Darius said. "We can get her." He then got an idea of how to get her on board. "Plus, your followers might really love a thrilling dino-chase."
Brooklynn seemed to like that idea as she smiled and Darius saw she was on board and drove off towards the Sinoceratops.
"Wait. Are you guys going after her?" Sammy asked, using their comms. "I really don't think that's a good idea."
"I've seen cattle spook before, and-"
"Yep, they're going after her," Peter said into the comms. He chuckled, missing Yaz growing a grin. "I don't know about you but-"
"Uh-huh. Let's go." Yaz said as she ignored what he was saying and zipped off, causing Peter to fall back in his seat.
"Wait, are we following them?" Sammy asked as she started to follow after them, not wanting to be left behind.
Kenji and Ben shared a look as they were the remaining two who weren't moving. "Oh, no! There's no way I'm-"
"Great! I'll drive." Kenji declared, grabbing onto the stick and driving them forward as fast as they could go.
With that, all of them began to chase the Sinoceratops from entering the jungle. Brooklynn and Darius came up on the left side, while Yaz and Peter's GyroSphere came up on the right side. The Sinoceratops seemed to not like it, starting to shove them out of her way.
"Almost got you, girl," Darius said.
But as he was moving in closer, the Sinoceratops made a sudden turn, leaving them to almost hit a cliffside. Darius managed to move them out of the way, but Brooklynn almost dropped her phone in the process. But she managed to catch it with ease.
"Sorry. That was close." Darius said.
Brooklynn then got an idea as she took the gum she had been chewing and placed it on her phone. Then she placed the phone against the screen and allowed it to record from there.
"VoilĂ ! Instant phone mount." Brooklynn proclaimed.
"Great idea," Darius said, his face growing from a smile to a little disgusted. "And also, ew."
"Well, just keep driving, dino-nerd," Brooklynn tells him.
"Sure thing, superstar," Darius said, seeing they were starting to actually bond.
"Um, let's just let everybody settle down a bit." Sammy tried to keep up in her GyroSphere up to Yaz and Peter's. "We don't wanna get too close or-"
But that was when Kenji came in and caused Sammy and Yaz to separate their Gyrospheres from next to one another when they almost hit.
"Watch it, Ben. You almost hit us!" Yaz stated.
"It wasn't me!" Ben cried, looking back to show he was just a passenger. Then he looked forward and over towards Kenji. "You're gonna get us both killed!
"With you driving, we'll die of boredom," Kenji stated, trying to keep up.
"Give me!" Ben cried, trying to get control back.
"Just..."
"Give me!"
"Bro!"
Their fighting got them to lose control and go out into the field.
"Come on, Darius, get closer!" Brooklynn tells him.
"Someone flank her on the other side and we can lead her back to the herd," Darius tells them the plan.
"Wait, you'll scare her." Sammy tried to warn them, growing up around heading animals.
Kenji then zipped back and showed up between Sammy and Peter as they eyed him heading toward the Sinoceratops. "Let the big dogs handle this, cowgirl." He then started to do what Darius suggested. "Sino sandwich, baby! Hoo!"
They began to circle around the Sinoceratops as she seemed to become agitated by their appearance. "I'll cut her off. It'll be fine, Sammy."
"No, you're gonna make her bolt," Sammy informed them. "This isn't the way to do this. We gotta calm her down."
"You got any ideas on how to do that?" Peter asks her. "Don't tell me, I am just along for the ride here."
"Like you are not enjoying this," Yaz stated.
"Never said I wasn't... just not used to this kind of rush," Peter admitted when they came to a stop.
Darius stopped ahead of the Sinoceratops and kept her from running. Then Kenji stopped and blocked the Sinoceratops from running away. Then Yaz stopped and the Sinoceratops noticed she was becoming surrounded. But then the Sinoceratops ran off and made its way over towards the entire herd in a rush.
"That doesn't look good," Peter commented.
"No, it ain't," Sammy confirmed. "Listen up, y'all. We gotta get her before she goes and spooks the whole herd. Stay to the outside or-"
Kenji however ignored her as he zoomed past with Darius, leaving Yaz and Peter with her. "We've got this."
"Relax." Yaz shrugged as she saw they knew what they were doing. "Darius knows dinosaurs." Then she zipped off to follow after them.
The Sinoceratops made their way back towards the herd when Darius tried to stop it once again. But this time, it caused the Sinoceratops to fight back as she smacked into their GyroSphere, sending them flying into the herd and their screams filled their comms. They then knocked into several of the dinosaurs, causing those dinosaurs to get spooked and fight back, smacking the GyroSphere around and spooking even more dinosaurs, causing an entire stampede against all of the dinosaurs.
"They're disappointed, but they'll get over it," Dave told the worker they were informing the news about leaving. "Better safe then-"
That was when the herd reached them, causing the three camper counselors and the park worker to become afraid when they saw the herd was separating. "We've got multiple assets straying from the herd."
"The kids!" The counselors feared.
That was when they looked up to their jeep on the edge of the cliff, which was shoved over by a Sinoceratops.
"Move!" Roxie shoved Richard and Dave against the wall of the cliffside. When she did so, the truck began to lean over, making its way over to crush them. "Duck!"
They did so, causing the car to lean against them and providing a safe haven for them as the herd began to pass them.
Back with the others, they were trying to escape the chaos of the herd they unintentionally caused. Luckily the gyrospheres were holding up to their purpose of keeping them safe. But it wasn't like getting knocked around was something they were planning on being put up against.
"Watch out!" Peter cried as he clung to his seat.
Yaz moved out of the way of the dinosaurs, trying to keep them alive. "This thing's not going fast enough!"
"Stego, 12 o'clock! Tail, tail, tail!" Sammy cried as she drove around, avoiding all of the dinosaurs everywhere she turned.
"Ah! I wanna go home!" Ben cried in terror.
Darius and Brooklynn flew out of control until finally they came to a stop and saw another swarm of dinosaurs coming their way. "Go, go, go, go, go!"
Darius drove away as fast as he could, but they were slammed by the dinosaurs into the woods.
Peter and Yaz were close behind as they also made their way into the woods. "Low branch coming right at us!" Peter warned Yaz.
"I see it. Let me concentrate." Yaz said as they noticed thunder crashing and the storm was coming back.
As they were distracted, a tree was struck by the lighting, causing it to fall into their path. Peter and Yaz screamed as she tried to draw them to a halt. But that didn't help as that ended with them slamming into the branch, knocking Peter's glasses clean off. Yaz tried to back them up, but they ran into another branch causing her to draw them to a halt.
"Are we alive?" Peter asked in terror.
"Looks like it," Yaz commented.
"Great," Peter said with a sigh, realizing his glasses were missing. "Oh, god. Help me find my glasses."
Yaz was beginning to help as she leaned forward, only to hear a crunching sound underneath her shoe. She froze when she heard it, as did Peter when they looked and saw his glasses crushed under her foot.
"Found them," Yaz said in a sheepish tone, looking over toward Peter who gave her an emotionless squinted eyes look. "Sorry..." He still didn't change his expression. "Are you mad, or is this you trying to see me clearly?"
Peter still gave her an emotionless look before looking over and watching as a blurry GyroSphere headed in their direction. "Oh, boy."
"What?" Yaz asked, not noticing the GyroSphere coming at them.
That was until the GyroSphere knocked into them, getting them to shake and look to see it was Sammy. "Hey!"
"And this just keeps getting better," Peter groaned.
Yaz opened the gyropsphere and they exited the vehicle as Sammy climbed out of hers. "Ya'll okay?"
"We're fine," Peter said with a sigh. "I might be slightly blind, but I'll live." He then looked over to Yaz. "You?"
"Fine, sorry about the glasses," Yaz said, rubbing her arm a little.
"Eh, it's fine, just don't think that I have dinosaur coverage," Peter said, not wanting to make a big deal out of an accident. "Even though that will be fun to explain what happened."
"Let's just get these branches out of our way so we can get out of here," Yaz said, beginning to move the sticks. "We can't all fit inside Sammy's GyroSphere."
They then began to try and move the branches out of the way so they could find the others. "Good news- this gives us a lot more time to get to know each other," Sammy said on the bright side.
"We should do that... later," Yaz said, trying to get away from this. "Much, much later. First, we need to-"
"Help! Can you hear us?" Their comms were going off as Brooklynn cried. "We're stuck mudhole and we're sinking! Help!"
Peter ran over and picked up the comms from inside the GyroSphere. "Brooklynn? Brooklynn, can you hear me? Where are you?"
Yaz ran over and they heard the comms went dead. "We gotta find them."
"Brooklynn? Darius?" Sammy cried out.
"Guys! Can you hear us?" Yaz cried as she picked up another branch. "Keep clearing away the b- No, wait." She then started to throw the branches against the tree, "Pile it up. Pile it up. All of it."
"What?" Peter asked, looking down at the sticks and starting to get it. "Oh, I'm catching on!" He then started to try and help by stacking the sticks.
"Huh?" Sammy seemed to not be getting it.
"Just keep piling. Come on." Yaz said as they all started to stack the sticks.
They created a ramp that cleared a pathway and they all ended up piling into the one GyroSphere anyways. Peter took up a seat in the middle with the monitor and the girls took the seats. Yaz then drove as fast as the GyroSphere would go, ending with them jumping the branches like a ramp and allowing them to get past the tree.
"We're coming, Brooklynn!" Sammy cried as she tried to contact them. "Hello? Hello? Can anybody hear me?"
"Still no sign of-" Peter said when he shrieked as two people walked out of the trees. They came to a stop and found, "Ben and Kenji? Where is your sphere?"
"Long story..." Kenji laughed sheepishly.
That was when they came to the sad realization that everyone was huddled inside of the GyroSphere. Peter needed to move now sitting on the right side up against the wall Ben using the seatbelt and Kenji leaning on the panel side. Yaz was leaning on the controls to move them forward while Sammy sat on her left.
"I'm pretty sure we're exceeding the maximum occupancy in here," Ben commented.
"We're a little past that, Ben," Peter tells him. "Like, chasing dinosaurs, past."
"I lost them. It's just static." Sammy warned them.
They came to a stop and were trying to hear where they were. But with the thunder, it was becoming more and more difficult. But then Kenji picked up their screams.
"I hear them! They're over there!" Kenji pointed them in the direction.
Driving their way over, they found a GyroSphere sinking in the mud, getting them to drive over and stop.
"Brooklynn? Darius?" Sammy contacted them as they drove over and saw them sinking. "We're coming to help!"
"Help!" Brooklynn and Darius cried as they banged against the glass.
"Get us out of here!" Brooklynn cried.
Everyone left the GyroSphere and ran over towards the sinking GyroSphere to try and help them out.
Roxie! Dave! Richard!" Ben called into the comms, staying in the GyroSphere. "We've got a real emergency here!"
Kenji grunts as he tries to grab ahold of it. "I can't grab ahold of it."
"It's too heavy," Peter stated, trying to help as he and Kenji jumped inside.
"It's gonna pull you under!" Ben warned them. Getting out of the way, they tried to crawl away when they spotted something coming out of the woods. "Uh, guys?"
They then saw it was the Sinoceratops from earlier. "Oh, come on!"
The Sinoceratops growled, getting everyone to jump backward in terror. But it seemed that Sammy got an idea as she thought of something, seeing a branch on the ground.
"What if...?" Sammy wondered as she stood up. "I've got an idea."
Sammy then picked up the branch while Yaz was confused. "What are you doing?" Then Sammy picked up the branch and approached the Sinoceratops. "What? Wait!"
Sammy approached the Sinoceratops and tried not to spook her. She roared, trying to scare her off. But Sammy was a little spooked but stood her ground. "Hey. I get it. It's hard to trust strangers. It's a scary world out there. But I'll trust you if you trust me." She then slowly approached the Sinoceratops as she seemed to be acting calmer. "I'm not gonna hurt you."
Sammy then left the branch in front of the Sinoceratops as she slowly started to trust Sammy and ate the branch. Calming down the Sinoceratops as she starts to eat the branch calmly. What she said got Yaz's attention as she thought about what Peter said in the GyroSphere as well and was starting to get it.
"Guys?" Darius got their attention.
"Real touching and all, but we're still gonna die!" Brooklynn called out.
Sammy then got her plan into action as she picked up some loose vines on the floor. "Hurry!"
They tied a lot of the vines together and then tied it onto the back of the Sinoceratops. Using this, they gave the other end to the hole in the GyroSphere caused by another Sinoceratops.
"Got it!" Brooklynn cried as she tied it to the seats.
But as they did, the GyroSphere sank into the mud.
Ben shrieked, getting their attention. "Hurry, Sammy!"
Sammy grunts as she picks up another branch. "On it!" She then leads the Sinoceratops to get it to drag the GyroSphere upward. "Come on, girl. Easy. That's it. Nice and slow." The GyroSphere began to slowly come out of the mud. "Let's go. You've got this."
Yaz used a stick to force open the doors, and they saw the two of them stuck in a moment of fear.
"Hey," Darius said sheepishly.
"It worked!" Peter cried in relief.
Yaz sighed as she dropped down and cheered. "Whoo-hoo!"
"All right! All right!"
"Cowgirl for the win!" Kenji congratulated. "Woot! Woot!"
They then heard the sound of a vehicle approaching. Then they saw that it was the counselors. They exited the vehicle and were shocked at what they were seeing.
"Hey, look! It's Dave, Richard, and Roxie!" Sammy called. "Hey!"
They looked over the scene as the Sinoceratops bellows and got them all kinds of confused. And also the fact is the whole thing might be a bit much with all of these kids together. It was like they were going out of their way to find trouble.
"You could have been killed!" Roxie stated, making their way upwards back to camp. "What were you thinking?"
"That we found a lost dinosaur and Darius and Brooklynn," Kenji stated with pride. "Don't ask me how I did it, but I did it."
Brooklynn laughed as they walked inside.
"What?" Richard was all kinds of confused.
"That's the funniest thing I've heard all day!" Peter mocked.
"Not as funny as your screams." Yaz mocked playfully. "Your eyes were closed."
Roxie led them to the elevators. "Now stay in your bunks, you hear me?"
They made their way back up to camp while the counselors stayed down.
"Weren't you crying at one point?"
"Hey, I helped!"
"Oh, my gosh, he's serious."
"Wow, Kenji."
Peter sighed as he was left alone in the bunk room as he was trying to see amongst his gear. He tried to see if he packed his spare glasses, but it seemed like there was no luck. He sighed as the door opened and Yaz walked in with her book of dinosaur sketches.
"Hey," Yaz called out.
Peter turned and had to squint as she was too far away to see her clearly. "Oh, hey, what are you doing here?"
"I just wanted to say thanks for what you said out there," Yaz told him. "You were right. I really do need to start opening up more. Especially around you guys."
"It's okay to open up slowly," Peter promised her. "Baby steps are important."
Yaz nodded as she backed off. "And I really am sorry about what happened to your glasses."
"Don't worry about it, I'm over it," Peter promised, taking a seat on his bed. He missed that the spider began crawling its way upward onto his sleeve. "But there is someone else out there you wanted to talk to?"
"Right," Yaz said, backing off. "Night, I guess."
"Night." Peter chuckled as she left.
Peter let out a weary sigh as he leaned back and sank into the soft embrace of his bed, the day's chaos fading into the background. He felt a warm sense of contentment at the thought of Yaz and Sammy becoming fast friends on this trip, and he couldn't help but smile at how Brooklynn and Darius were getting along. He was even more surprised that he was even considering these people as his friends. Sammy was a bit much, but she had a good heart. And Kenji... he was still getting a feel for.
However, the tranquility shattered when a sharp, stinging sensation pierced the nape of his neck. Instinctively, he jerked upwards and his hand went back to swat at the source of the irritation, his eyes widening in surprise as he caught sight of a small spider scuttling away. Confusion washed over him, quickly replaced by dizziness that enveloped him like a thick fog.
Before he knew it, he was crashing back onto the mattress, his heart racing as a wave of pain coursed through his body. It felt as if invisible tendrils were tightening around him, dragging him into a swirl of unease. Numbness spread from his neck, pooling in his limbs and causing him to lose his grip on reality. Unbeknownst to him, this unsettling moment marked the onset of something extraordinary, a transformation he couldn't begin to fathom as his body began to change in ways he had never imagined.
He was becoming something sensational.
Something amazing.
Something... spectacular.
