Prologue
Jolie
My mom is obsessed with France. When I was little, she'd tell me the stories of her study abroad in Paris when she was in college. She'd promise to take me to Paris for my sixteenth birthday (a trip that didn't end up happening, not her fault.) Her love for France wasn't even dimmed by the fact that my birth, to a guy she was dating (who then ditched her) in France, caused her to have to move back to the US to accept help from her parents in raising me. She's even a French teacher!
Her obsession with all things France even translates to my name, Jolie Soleil, or in English, Beautiful Sunshine. The only problem with this name is that I can't go into the sunlight. Well, I can, but it takes a lot of work to make sure I don't die, so most of the time, I don't.
No, I'm not a vampire. I have this rare genetic thing, called Xeroderma Pigmentosum (say that three times fast), or XP. Basically, my body burns really easily and is unable to heal itself afterward, leading to skin cancer. I had my first cancer removed when I was nine.
I'm not just some sick girl, though. I love to read, swim, ride roller coasters, play board games, and watch movies with my family. I went to public school up until my last semester of senior year, and I had friends.
Unfortunately for me, due to mom getting a new, and better paying, job in La Push, Washington, we have to move. At least Grandpa is coming with us. Grandpa can always make me laugh.
