Chapter 14: Settling In

Principal King took Sophie and her parents further into the school, and then they got to the 3rd grade wing.
"His room is right over there. Sophie, I'll introduce you first and then he can meet your parents." Principal King told.
"Okay." Sophie replied.
The two walked up to the door, and Principal King knocked on it. Then Mr. Martinez opened the door.
"Hello Mr. Martinez." greeted Principal King.
"Ah hello, you caught me at a good time. What do I owe you the pleasure for today?" Mr. Martinez asked.
"I'd like you to meet Sophie Shaw. The new student I told you about."
"Hi Mr. Martinez." Sophie greeted.
"Pleasure to meet you Sophie, I'm Mr Martinez your new teacher. I can take things over from here Principal King, wouldn't be the first new student in the middle of the school year I've had."
"I'm sure you'll enjoy having her. And Sophie Mr. Martinez is one of the best teachers we have here." said Principal King, and she left the room.
"Well Sophie, this'll be your classroom for the next few months. I have your school supply sheet here, everything can be bought here in town. Now we do have a few rules to discuss before you start class tomorrow."
"Okay."
"First, I know kids today have electronic devices like iPhones and iPod touches, you are not to use them during class. During P.E. you are to leave them in my desk with your name on it so I know it's yours. Before class, lunch, and during free time you may use them. I have a strong no theft policy now. One of my students had something stolen from her a month ago and the thief got injured by her. I'd tell you what it was if you really want but I don't think you'd know or care what it was."
"Got it."
"Those are the main rules I have. Now I want to know about you. Where'd you live before here?"
"New York." "New York, quite a ways from here. Looking at paperwork your mom's name is Honey Shaw. I must say that name sounds familiar."
"Uh…I'm sure it's nothing. And Mr. Martinez I have a question."
"What's that?"
"Are the kids in your class…nice? My old ones weren't very nice to me."
"Well we are a small town near a mountain so way different than where you are. I'm sure you'll find someone you like here to befriend you. Everyone has their own interests. I feel I should warn you about Lucy before you meet her. She can be really sweet but does have some anger issues she's working out. She and her brother Kevin who's shy are the wealthiest students in class. Lucy loves showing off so I apologize for her behavior in advance. She's the student who injured that thief I mentioned. All over a necklace if you can believe that."
"I see."
"But I'm sure you'll fit right in here. And I'm looking forward to having you in my class." Sophie smiled.
Then it was time for Mr. Martinez to meet Sophie's parents. Honey and Zeke shook hands with Mr. Martinez, and talked about what kind of teaching method he used, and what kinds of things he expected of his students.
After all that was out of the way, Sophie was ready for her first day which would be in two days.
After picking up Zack from Honey's parents they went back home.
"I think we're going to like it here." Honey declared, as they got home.
"I think so too. So what should we do now?" Zeke asked.
Honey thought for a moment, and then looked at her phone.
"Well it's getting to be lunch time soon, why don't we go into town and get some. And we can also see what's in this town."
"Sounds good to me." Sophie piped up.
"Me." squeaked Zack.
And they all went into the car to go into town.
As they drove into town, they saw that the town was really basic. It had a Walmart, a couple of other stores, a few fast food places, a couple sit down restaurants, some small businesses, a small theater, and a library.
They also saw that some buildings were either closed, for sale, or boarded up.
"Wow this place sure is different than New York." observed Sophie.
"Yes, it is." agreed Honey.
"But don't worry, I'm sure we'll make this place our home. Besides you have to admit the air quality here is better."
"You got that right." Zeke piped up.
They pulled into a burger place, and went inside. After eating their food, they decided to walk around a bit. They also saw there was a park with a playground that didn't look too bad.
"That looks like a nice place for you kids to play." Honey said.
"At least that's one thing to do around here." Sophie replied.
"It seems like we're gonna have to go to the next town or closest city to do something fun or exciting." Zeke mentioned.
"Well, we'll make due." assured Honey.
A couple days later, it was time for Sophie to start school, and for Honey and Zeke to start their new jobs. Honey and Zeke were in their room getting ready.
"Well how do I look?" Honey asked.
She was wearing a light pink blouse, blue jeans, and black and yellow shoes.
"You look great, Honey." Zeke complimented.
"Thanks, Z. And you look good too."
He was wearing a dark blue t-shirt, jeans, and black shoes.
"Now I better go get Zack ready."
"And I'll go make sure Sophie is all ready." Zeke replied.
They left their bedroom, and went to check on their kids. In Zack's room, Honey got her son diapered and dressed.
"There we go, Zacky. All ready for your first day of daycare?" Honey asked him.
"Care." Zack babbled.
In Sophie's room, she had just finished getting dressed. Zeke knocked on her door.
"Sophie, are you almost ready?" he asked through the door.
"Yes, Dad. I'll be out in a second." Sophie replied.
"Breakfast will be waiting."
In the kitchen, Honey had Zeke in his high chair, and was putting breakfast on the table. Since they all had to eat and go, they had a simple breakfast of cereal and fruit. After eating they got their things together and got ready to leave.
Just as Honey was about to leave the house, she got a text from her parents. It read, "Good luck on all your first days." Honey smiled, and replied, "Thanks Mom and Dad." Then she got in the car, and Zeke drove them off.
"We'll have to see about getting our second car down here. That way we can go to work at different times." Honey told him.
"Good idea." replied Zeke.
First they dropped Sophie off at school, then Zack off at daycare, and then they went to Zeke's garage. He and Honey got out of the car, and Honey went to get into the driver's seat.
"Well here we go." said Honey, and she drove off to her new job.
