The Sister
Chapter 5
Elizabeth's morning had dragged on, and the afternoon wasn't looking any better. She was nervous to see Sam after the text they had sent last night. She still wasn't sure what to think. But he hadn't turned up at his normal time, neither did Jared. She had waited around work longer just in case they were running late but there was no sign of either of them. She felt deflated as she drove home to get ready for her last night shift for the week. She picked Juliet up from daycare on the way home and spent some time with her before she got ready for work. As she was almost ready to head back to work her phone rang with a number she didn't recognise.
"Hello?" She answered, unsure who was on the other end of the line.
"Hey Lizzy, sorry we couldn't make it in today some stuff came up," she jumped as Sam's voice came through the phone.
"Why did you call me?" she was confused.
"Did you want to go out to dinner tomorrow night?" Sam asked skipping over her question.
"Sam it's cute, really I appreciate the attention but no," Beth said.
"No?" Sam questioned. He was smiling on the other end of the phone. She may have said no but she didn't mean it. Her voice was too high, he knew she was lying.
"No, I'm not going out with you Sam," Beth said.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
"No, yes, no, yes Sam, I'm sure." Beth was flustered and started pacing as she tried to get her words right.
"For someone that's sure you seem very unsure," Sam mused from the other end of the phone. He liked it when she was flustered.
"The answer is no Sam," Beth said trying to sound more firm on her decision.
"Okay. Just in case you're not sure I'll drop by your house at six tomorrow." Sam stated and Beth paused for a moment trying to work out if he was serious or joking.
"What no, Sam the answer is no," Beth said after a moment of silence.
"No problem. I'll see you at six. Bye Lizzy." The phone went dead.
"Sam?" She called him straight back once she realised he had hung up.
"Did you change your mind?" Sam asked, answering on the second ring.
"No, but I think you lost yours!" Beth said.
"That's fine, I'll see you tomorrow. Bye Lizzy." He hung up on her again before she could get another word out. She stared at the phone confused about what just happened. She moved through the rest of her day in a daze. Sam didn't show his face at the diner that day either. Beth still didn't know if he was serious about the date or not. Either way she was too nervous to go to La Push the next day in case Sam really did turn up at her house. Isabella was shocked to see Beth at the table eating breakfast on a Saturday morning.
"You're not in La Push," Isabella said from the kitchen doorway.
"Thank you for that update. I wasn't sure where I was," Beth said giving Julie another spoonful of scrambled eggs.
"Isn't it Saturday?" Isabella asked, thinking she may have missed a day of the week.
"Yeah, I decided to stay here this weekend," Beth shrugged.
"Okay," Isabella went to the fridge to get some orange juice.
"There is more food in the oven if you want it, dad left early and I over cooked," Beth offered not looking at her sister.
"Thanks," Isabella was surprised but took Beth up on her offer filling a plate with food.
"So, you're really just going to sit around here all day?" Isabella asked taking a seat at the table.
"Pretty much. You?" Beth stood taking her plate with her and cleaning it off.
"I'm going hiking with a friend." Beth laughed.
"He must be a super cute friend for you to go hiking," Beth commented as she filled the sink. Bella blushed. "Just keep an eye out, there are some bad things out in those woods. Also try not to fall over or get eaten."
"Thanks," Isabella said.
"Come on Julie, let's get you changed," Beth said letting her dishes soak and going to grab her daughter from the highchair.
"Juliee," the little girl squealed and giggled as her mother picked her up.
"Yeah that's you, that's your name," Beth smiled.
"Mama," the small girl said pressing her hands to Beth's face.
"That's my name, mama," Beth carried her to the bathroom.
"Mama," the girl laughed, and Beth soaked in the sound, her worries fading away. Isabella left not long after she finished eating. An expensive looking car picked her up from out front of the house and Beth wondered who this mystery guy was.
Elizabeth hovered around the house all day, catching up on washing and food prep for her father. She was also just trying to keep busy until six that afternoon. It felt like it would never come as the day dragged on. When the time finally neared Elizabeth stood by the front window.
"Are you waiting on something?" Charlie asked as he cleaned his tackle box trying to fit in new lures but having no luck.
"I'm not sure," Beth said watching another random car drive by.
"Okay. Do you know where your sister is?" Charlie asked.
"She went hiking." Beth said not looking away from the window.
"No really Beth. Where is she?" Charlie asked with a laugh.
"She left with some guy this morning, said they were going hiking," Beth shrugged. It was three to six and she felt her heart rate picking up.
"Must be the Cullen boy," he said not sounding too pleased.
"No way," Beth whispered.
"Yeah, she's been hanging around with him a lot lately, not who I thought she would be interested in either but… Beth?" Charlie asked watching his daughter rush to the front door. He got up following her outside. A large black truck was parked in front of their house. Sam Uely walked around the truck saying hello to Beth. She ignored the greeting.
"What the hell are you doing here Sam, I said no," Beth said waving a hand at him. Charlie hadn't seen Sam in a few weeks and was shocked by how much the kid had filled out and grown over that time.
"Yeah, but you didn't sound sure on your answer," Sam said smirking down at her.
"I said no multiple times Sam," she said.
"Is everything okay here?" Charlie asked stepping closer.
"Hey Charlie, do you mind if I borrow Elizabeth for a few hours?" Sam asked just ignoring Beth and the glare she was trying to give him.
"Oh umm, I guess not. Why didn't you say you had a date?" Charlie asked looking at his daughter. She usually told him everything that was going on in her life but she had never mentioned Sam to him.
"It's not a date," Beth said quickly.
"So, is that a yes?" Sam asked turning back to Beth.
"Uh fine, wait here," she jogged back inside the house leaving the two men alone.
"I would say don't do anything stupid or think about hurting her in any way, but I don't think the threat would get through unless I was holding a gun. Just remember I have lots of them. You may have muscles, but they won't stop a bullet." Charlie said looking up at Sam.
"Don't worry Charlie. I think she's more dangerous than I am," Sam said, only half joking. Beth breezed past them now wearing a jacket and boots. She still had on the same grey t-shirt she had worn while cleaning today and a pair of old faded genes. Her hair was a wavy mess compared to her normal work bun.
"Come on, let's get this done," she said opening the truck door and climbing up into it without looking back at either of them.
"Good luck Sam," Charlie said giving him a pat on the back before heading for the house. Charlie knew he would need more then luck to get past Beth's shields. Sam went to the driver's door hopping back up into his truck and starting the engine. He didn't say anything as he drove down her street and turned towards La Push. He knew the best way to get her talking was to say nothing. After a few silent minutes passed between them she finally spoke.
"I'm sure I said no to this," she hissed. Her arms were crossed over her chest, and she looked anywhere but at him. He could tell she was putting up walls.
"If you really don't want to be here you wouldn't have gotten into the truck," Sam replied. She sat on that for a moment before talking again.
"So, where are we going?" She asked her shoulders softening.
"I was thinking the diner," Sam barely got the words out before Beth spun on him.
"What?" Beth yelled at him her eyes popping out of her head.
"I'm joking, calm down," he rested a hand on her thigh. "We are going somewhere a lot more private."
"Sus but okay," she sighed, looking back at the road. She either didn't feel his touch or she chose to pay it no attention. Sam turned down a few off-road tracks until he came to a stop at the end of a dirt road. It looked like it led onto a hiking trail of some kind, but Beth was so turned around it could have been anywhere. Sam got out of the truck without saying anything and Beth followed suit. He grabbed a large cooler and blanket out of the back of the truck.
"Come on," he said holding his free hand out to her. She took it without protesting. She was here, she might as well see what was going to happen next. He led her into the dark trees, and they started following a beater track, but Sam pulled her off it a few meters in. She couldn't tell how he knew where he was going. To her it was all dark except a few small spots of light that shone through from the moon above. Sam seemed to know where he was going though and told her when she had to watch her step or be careful.
The trees cleared suddenly and in front of them was a cliff, around a four-meter square area of clear grass then a straight drop off to crashing waves. It was definitely private. Moonlight shimmered on the waves and lit the small area enough for Beth to easily see now. Sam let go of her hand and sat the cooler down.
"Is this okay?" He asked, his smile was gone as he watched her for any kind of reaction.
"Yeah, this is good." He tossed the blanket out and unpacked the cooler. Beth walked towards the ledge her heart drumming loudly. She peaked over it at the long drop below. The wild wind wipped her hair around her face. She jumped as heavy hands landed on her waste. If Sam hadn't been holding her, she would have jumped right over the edge. She sighed, leaning back into him, her heart about to rip its way out of her chest. They stood like that for many moments, just looking out over the water.
"You need to calm your heart down; it's going to give out soon if it keeps going that fast." His lips brushed her ear, and a shiver ran down her spine. "Come on, let's eat." He pulled her away from the edge. Beth was glad he didn't let go of her hand, she felt ready to fall over. She wasn't sure what she had expected from Sam Uley. But a nighttime picnic on a cliff was definitely not something she thought possible. She had heard about many of his dates with Leah and this wasn't something he had done with her.
"You can cook?" Beth asked as she took a seat on the blanket and looked over all the different dishes of food.
"No. At least not good. But I can order take away and put it into dishes," Sam smiled taking a seat across from her. Beth let out a loud laugh making Sam smile even wider. At least he was honest about that.
