The Sister

Chapter 6

"What are we really doing here Sam?" Beth asked once the food had been eaten and the small talk had stopped between them.

"I wanted to get to know you better," he grabbed her hand tugging her to move closer to him. She pulled her hand back and he watched her walls build back up around her. He had almost gotten through to her, he was sure she had put her walls down for at least a little while.

"Sam, this can never work. I'm not going to date my friends ex, I can already hear the gossip that would go around town. Not to mention my job would be at risk. And I have so much baggage it's not even funny, no one needs to deal with that much shit." She looked out over the water as she spoke, not meeting his eyes.

"Did you not have a good night?" Sam asked.

"That doesn't matter." Beth replied.

"So what other people think matters more then if you're happy or not?" Sam asked, he felt like he was back at the start all over again.

"I think it's time we go," Beth said standing up.

"Okay," Sam sighed, pushing her wouldn't make any difference. If she needed space then he would give her space. Sam carried the cooler and blanket, leading the way back to the truck through the dark trees. Beth followed right behind him, refusing to hold his hand this time. He went slow so she didn't rush over the uneven ground. When they reached the truck Sam put the cooler and blanket into the back of the truck. He expected Beth to be in the cab waiting for him but she still stood at the front of the truck staring out at the trees.

"Lizzy?" Sam asked.

Beth looked at him, her mind a wild mess of emotions. If she only had one night like this, she would make it count. She covered the three steps between them, grabbed his face and pulled it down to her hight. She pressed her lips to his and felt the wold around her slip away as he returned the kiss. She had hoped it would be horrible, that there would be no spark and she could just move on. But it was like being hit by lightning as every part of her body zapped to life. She hadn't kissed anyone in years so she couldn't be fully sure how it use to feel but she couldn't believe it had felt that good before. Out of breath Beth leant back, trying to get air back in her lungs. She looked around dazed. She was now sitting on the hood of Sam's truck no idea when she got there. He stood in front of her, his hands gripping her waste like she could float away if he was to let go for even a second.

"Sam?" Beth whispered.

"Yes Lizzy?" His voice was husky and she felt like she was going to melt on the spot.

"I want to do that again." He kissed her without hesitation. The pair melted together as their mouths desperately fought for more. If the heavens didn't open and cold rain hadn't pelted down on them they would have stayed like that all night. It was only when Beth started to shiver from the cold Sam insisted she get in the truck. They were both dripping wet but inside the truck was warm. Sam rested his hand on her thigh as he drove her home.

He drove slowly and took the long way to her house wanting as much time with her as he could get. But eventually he had to pull up out front of the Swan house. The lights were still on inside and outside the house.

Wordlessly Sam lent across the cab of the truck cupping Beth's chin in his hand. He pressed a quick kiss to her lips. Only a mer peck compared to their earlier make out session on the hood of his truck.

"Good night Lizzy," Sam whispered pulling away from her. She couldn't say anything, her mouth wouldn't let her. She didn't want to keep lying to him but she also didn't know what the truth was. Beth jumped out of the truck without a word feeling like she was tearing her heart in two as she shut the door and went into the house.

"How was your not a date?" Charlie called from the living room.

"You waited up for me?" Beth asked, hanging up her wet jacket and taking off her dirty boots by the door.

"No I'm waiting up for your sister, I just happened to catch you first. It's almost midnight. I thought you would have been home earlier if it wasn't going well." Charlie smiled. Even though he hated the idea of his daughters dating he was glad Beth was doing something other then working and caring for other people.

"Yeah it wasn't to bad, ended up getting drenched though. I'm going to go get warmed up, last thing I need is a cold."

After she showered and changed Elizabeth crawled into bed, her mind a wreck. She felt exhausted the next morning at work. She hadn't been able to sleep and tossed all night. Now she felt dead on her feet and counted down the time until she could go home.

"Hey, Beth?" Leah called walking across the diner, Beth froze, dread crawling up her spine. "I didn't think you were working today," Leah said stopping in front of her.

"Kim started today, your mum just wanted me to run her over things. I'm leaving soon, Dad could only watch Juliet for a couple hours." She said a little to quickly but Leah didn't seem to notice.

"Oh cool, is she going good?" Leah asked looking across the room at Kim as she took a couples order.

"Yeah seems to be picking everything up." Beth nodded. Kim was very smart, lacking a little in people skills but she would get there.

"That's good. Hey Jen told me about what Sam did the other night, I just wanted to check what happened?" Beth felt sick.

"What?" She asked her voice almost giving out on the word.

"The burger order Friday night, calling you hot?" Leah said and Beth almost sighed in relief that that was all she was talking about.

"Oh he was just joking around. I put hot sauce on his burger the other day trying to get back at him but apparently he liked it," Beth shrugged not looking at Leah.

"He called you hot," Leah said pointedly.

"Sam and Jared joke around like that, I just ignore it. I can tell them to stop it if you have a problem with it. I'm sorry I didn't put a stop to it sooner."

"I saw them with Paul today, if they are hanging out with him god only knows what shit they are saying about women. Don't stress I just wanted to be sure he wasn't being rude to you," Leah smiled down at Beth.

"Men, who needs them," Beth said with an eye roll.

"They are only good for one thing and one thing only," Leah laughed. "If he gives you any problems just let me know, I'll get him in line. I've got to get going."

"See you tomorrow," Beth said watching Leah exit the diner. Beth felt horrible. She caught sight of Kim cleaning a table and went over to her. "Hey Kim if you don't have any other questions I'm going to leave you to it. Sue will be in soon anyways so if you have any questions just let her know."

"Okay no problem. Thanks for all your help Beth," the younger girl smiled brightly at her.

"That's okay, I'll see you tomorrow afternoon." Beth grabbed her things and got out of there as quickly as she could. She drove home with the windows down the fresh air calming her nerves.

"Hey dad," Beth said entering the house.

"Hey, how was work?" Charlie asked walking to the shoe rack and grabbing a pair of old boots.

"Good, good. The new girl is nice, I think she will do well," Beth said taking off her jacket and boots.

"That's good. Did you want to come down to Billy's for the game?" Charlie asked as he put the boots on.

"No I think we'll just hang here, let you boys have a night to yourselves." Beth picked Julie up out of her play pen.

"Okay, don't wait up," he smiled.

"Have fun, say hi to Billy for us." Julie waved a hand at her granddad as he opened the front door.

"Will do, you girls have a good time," Charlie smiled waving at them before shutting the door behind himself. Charlie wouldn't have been out of the street before there was a firm knock on the front door. Beth thought it was odd as they never had unexpected visitors. She went back to the front door, Julie still resting on her hip.

"Sam?" Beth was caught off guard as she opened the front door.

"Look I've got to tell you something and it's going to sound insane," he blurted out.

"So nothing new then," Beth laughed.

"Elizabeth this is serious," Sam said his face covered in worry.

"Did you want to come in?" Beth asked stepping away from the door.

"No, but would you come with me somewhere?" Sam asked.

"I can't just go Sam, I have Juliet." Beth wasn't sure what was going on.

"Bring her too, we can take your truck," Sam said and Beth felt uneasy.

"Where is your truck?" Beth asked not seeing it anywhere in the street.

"I ran here," Sam said like that was normal.

"You ran here?" She asked raising an eyebrow.

"Yeah, it's going to get a lot weirder then that," Sam said, his eyes were pleading with her and she wanted to say no but different words left her mouth.

"Okay give me a minute," she signed. Sam waiting by the door as Beth grabbed Juliet's travel bag. She slipped into boots and grabbed two jackets off the hooks by the door. "Where are we going?" Beth asked as she walked out the front door.

"I'll give you directions on the way," Sam said opening the car door for her to put Juliet in the back seat. He also opened the drivers door for her before getting in himself.

"Drive towards La Push," Sam said as Beth started the engine.

"Sam what's going on?" Beth asked as she started driving. He seemed a little calmer now they were away from the house and she couldn't work out why.

"Just take the first left when you hit La Push and follow your nose," he said not answering her question.

"What's in that direction?" She hadn't been that way before, she didn't think that old road led to anything.

"Trust me," Sam said.

"You think I would be here with my child if I didn't trust you?" Beth replied. Some reason deep down she did trust him, and she wasn't sure why. She followed his directions until she was pulling up a narrow driveway and parking next too a wood cabin. It was nestled in the trees with a small grass area to one side and enough room out front to park a few cars and turn around.

"Who's place is this?" Beth asked. If there hadn't been a light on inside she would have assumed it was empty by looking at the outside of it.

"Mine," Sam said and she looked at him with confusion.

"I thought you lived in town? Leah always made it sound like you did."

"I do. Did. My mother gave me this place a few years ago I've been fixing it up and have started moving in. I just rent the other place," he explained.

"Okay. Why are we here?" Beth asked.

"I want you to move in with me, both of you."

"Sam, we've been on one date," Beth said dumbfounded by his works.

"So you admit it was a date." Sam smiled.

"That's not my point Sam," Beth said

"You're not safe there Elizabeth."

"What do you mean?" She asked, confused. "Sam I don't understand what is going on."

"Your sister is dating a vampire," Sam blurted out instantly regretting his choice of words. He even thought that sounded insane.
