The Sister

Chapter 7

Beth broke out in laughter at Sam's unexpected comment.

"Fuck I actually thought you had something real to talk about, or you were in some kind of trouble. Sam just get out of my truck. I'm going home." Beth said feeling stupid for following him all the way out there.

"Give me five minutes to convince you I'm not crazy. Please Elizabeth," he grabbed her hand making her look at him. His eyes drew her in and she hated that she didn't want to leave him.

"I'm not getting out of this truck." She said.

"Okay that's fine. You stay right here. Please understand what I'm about to show you is a tribe secret, you can't tell anyone. It's going to seem really weird." Sam knew nothing he said would prepare her for what was about to happen.

"Weirder then vampires?" She asked with a disbelieving chuckle.

"Yeah." Sam nodded opening his door. "Just understand it's me, and I'm not going to hurt you." Wordlessly Beth watched as Sam climbed out of the truck. She was trying to work out if he was having some kind of mental break down or on drugs. Maybe both.

Sam walked a few meters in front of the truck and took off his shirt. Beth was even more confused as he took off his pants. He still had on boxers but they did little to cover him up. If Beth could have taken her eyes off him she would have driven away. He was clearly not stable. But she couldn't pull her eyes away from what was happening in front of her. She watched as he began to shake. At first she thought he was just cold, as he was standing outside practically naked. But no, this wasn't normal shaking, it got faster and faster until he was practically a blur.

Beth lent forward trying to understand what was happening to him. She shot back into her seat as a humongous black wolf leapt forward from the spot Sam had just been standing. Beth would have screamed if all the air in her lungs hadn't just disappeared. The wolf lowered its head and laid down on the ground in front of the truck.

Everything Sam had been saying started flowing through her mind again. It was a tribe secret, it's me, I'm not going to hurt you. His words looped around in her mind. She had heard the tribe legends as a young girl, the thought of a shapeshifter came to her mind. She tried to get the thought out of her head but how could she when one was standing right in front of her. She had watched someone she had known for years exploded into an overgrown wolf. With shaking fingers she took off her seat belt and opened the door. Her legs trembled as she stepped out of the truck, shutting the door behind her.

"Sam?" She asked, not stepping any closer to it. The wolfs head lifted and she flinched backwards. "Is that really you?" The head moved up and down slowly. She lost the ability to speak as she watched him, he seemed even bigger now she was out of the truck. She stepped forward slowly, the wolf stayed still as she approached. Beth took a deep breath as she stepped within reaching distance of the animal. If it wanted to kill her she would be dead. There was nothing stopping it.

She reached out slowly until her fingers touched its deep black fur. The wolf shut its large eyes letting out a deep breath. The fur was soft and warm between her fingers. It felt real, it was real. Beth stepped back, staring at him in disbelief.

"You were right, this is weirder then the thought of vampires," she gulped. Realisation hit her then that vampires were more then likely real as well. Her whole world changed in that moment, as the supernatural became more then just something she watched in movies and read in books.

Ever so slowly the wolf stood up, towering over Beth. She wasn't scared of it though. Looking into its large eyes she could see Sam staring back at her. She held her breath as it wondered off into the woods. Beth wasn't sure what to do then. Her nerves were through the roof and she needed something to take the edge off. Going to her trucks glove box she pulled out a cigarette and lighter. Elizabeth leant against the truck calming her nerves with the cigarette.

The door to the house opened and Sam stepped out only dressed in a pair of cut off shorts. He approached her slowly and her eyes watched his every move.

"Do you still think I'm crazy?" Sam asked, stopping a few feet in front of her.

"Yes. I also think I'm crazy now as well for believing you. You're a wolf Sam," Beth laughed shaking her head.

"Yeah, your telling me." Sam waiting to see what she would say or do next. She drew from the cigarette, her mind working over time to process what had just happened.

"Jared is also a wolf right? Shifter? Whatever you want to go by." She wasn't sure what the correct terminology was in their situation.

"Yeah, he's been one for around two weeks now. Paul phased Saturday as well so he's in the pack now too. So there are three of us currently," Sam said. He wanted to tell her so much more but he wasn't sure how much she could handle.

"Pack." Beth said the word as it started to all register in her mind. Sam was a wolf, he was in a pack, other people she knew and saw often were also in the pack.

"Did you want to come inside and talk?" Sam asked. It would be dark soon and he didn't want her out in the cold.

"Can I finish this first?" Beth asked.

"Yeah, I think you have earn that one. Did you want me to get Juliet out?" Sam asked.

"Sure. I actually forgot about her. What a great mother I am," Beth let out another dry laugh.

"Seeing someone turn into a wolf for the first time can effect memory. Don't beat yourself up over it. You actually took it better then I thought you would. Jared thought you would try hitting me with the truck," Sam laughed going around the other side of the truck to grab Juliet out.

"Dam, I didn't even think of that," Beth smiled thinking how that would have been a more logical response then patting the wolf.

Sam carried the small girl inside. Beth savoured the silence for a few moments. She took one last draw from the cigarette before stepping on it. Beth approached the house slowly. She walked up the steps onto a small front porch. Two sets of glass doors opened into a dining area. Beth walked in taking it all in. There was little furniture in it but the bones of the house were beautiful. The generous dining area was attached to the kitchen. A large island bench separated the two spaces. The kitchen was so much larger then her own one at home. There was a small room on the left and a winding staircase behind it. Sam sat in the lounge room that took up the other side of the ground floor. It had two sofas in it, a large rug in the centre of the room and a small tv stand and tv on one wall.

Sam sat in one of the sofas, Juliet stood in front of him, her hands on his knees to help her keep balance. Beth stood watching the pair for a few moments. Juliet was chuckling at Sam as he pulled funny faces at her. Beth consider sitting in the other sofa but she knew that wasn't where she wanted to be. She moved to sit next to Sam. She sat down next to him leaving a small space between them. Without hesitation Sam wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her to his side. She felt calmer just being closer to him.

"So my sister is dating a vampire?" Beth asked leaning her head on his shoulder and watching the small girl wonder off to explore the room.

"Yeah, the Cullen's are all cold ones, vampires. I'm sorry to be the one to tell you." Sam rested his head on hers.

"I always knew she was heartless, but that's just next level." Sam laughed.

"You're taking this better then I thought you would. Thank you for not freaking out." He had expected yelling or screaming. But Beth was acting even more relaxed then normal.

"Oh, I am freaking right out, but it's just on the inside. Sam if it's such a secret and no one can know, why did you show me?" Beth asked one of the many questions swirling around in her mind.

"Your an exemption to the rule," he said.

"How?" Beth asked.

"Imprints are allowed to know as well," Sam said. Beth pulled away from him. He was worried for a moment as he thought she was going to leave. Beth only went to the other side of the room, picking Julie up before she could get close to the old fire place in the corner of the room. She grabbed the girl's hand turning her back towards the sofas and walked back to Sam with her.

"Imprints? Care to explain?" Beth asked, her eyes flicking up to meet Sam's.

"It's like the spirits pick out your perfect match. From the moment you see her your whole world changes, it's not gravity holding you to the earth, it's her." She felt her heart rate pick up. His words echoed deep into her mind.

"So you're trying to tell me we're soul mates?" Beth asked, making sure she understood him.

"In a way yes. What are you thinking now?" Sam asked. She had frozen in place at his words. Julie slipped her hand free as Beth tried to find words. The small girl stumbled forward but Sam reached out a hand easily catching her. He picked the girl up putting her down on his lap and waited to hear her mothers thoughts.

"I think the wolf thing was easier to process." Beth shook her head returning to her seat next to Sam. "So you left Leah because you imprinted on me?"

"I was already going to leave her as the elders said it wasn't safe for her to be around me. When I saw you in the diner the day after getting back to town... I knew you were my imprint. All my past feelings for Leah disappeared and that made leaving her easier in some ways." Beth was partly relieved she wasn't the reason they had broken up. Beth nodded. She closed her eyes and leant her head back. "I don't want you staying at Charlie's. I can't sleep at night knowing you're there with one of them."

"She's letting them in the house?" Beth asked.

"Yeah, one of them is staying there at night. The whole house reeks of them." Sam explained.

"I can't just move in here, it would raise to many questions." Beth had no idea how she could explain it to her father or anyone else who found out about it. Moving in with a guy after one date was not normal but neither were vampires and giant wolves.

"What if you stayed at Billy's for the week? And then do a trial run here on the weekend. Would you be okay with that?" Sam tried to compromise with her as his mind tried to come up with a reason she couldn't stay at her fathers house.

"I can't impose on him like that," Beth said.

"Billy will understand," Sam said.

"The elders know, don't they?" She asked.

"Yeah, Billy, Harry and old Quil know everything."

"Ok I'll stay with Billy. We can give living together a trial run this weekend," Beth said."But this place isn't really child friendly." Beth's eyes scanned over the room. An open fire place, stairs and multiple tools scattered around the place. She could only imagine the dozens of ways Juliet could hurt herself.

"It will be done by Friday, fully ready." Sam smiled, eager to get to the end of the week now he knew he wouldn't have to go the weekend without seeing her.

"I don't think you understand how much stuff goes along with having a child," Beth signed.

"Whatever she needs I'll make happen, you just say the word and I'll do it."

"Well at the moment I need to get her home for dinner and bed." Beth wasn't sure how time had gone so quickly as it was dark outside by then.

"We'll go grab your stuff now. Then I'll take you Billy's," Sam said standing up with Julie.

"Okay, sounds good," Beth stood, feeling a little light headed after such a long day and nothing to eat since early that morning.

Sam carried Julie out to the truck. Beth moved to buckle her in but Sam insisted she show him how to work the car seat. She took him through the steps, he fumbled with the clips a few times but worked it out in the end. Sam offered to drive as he could see how drained Beth was from the days events. She wanted to protest but decided against it. He drove them back to Forks in silence as Beth didn't have it in her to ask any more questions. She had a lot of them for him but they could wait.

An expensive looking car sat outside Charlie's house as Sam pulled up across the road. Sam went stiff beside her. Beth squeezed his arm.

"Just wait in the car, I'll be fine. You have to trust me on this Sam," she smiled at him. He nodded his head even though it went against every fibre in his body letting her out of the car. Beth hopped out of the car and jogged up the front pathway. Stepping inside she didn't see anyone. The sound of music came from upstairs and she went up to her sisters room. She knocked on the door and opened it before Isabella could reply.

"Beth?" Isabella screeched sitting up in bed. A hansom young man sat next to Isabella on the bed. His skin was unbelievably pale and he sat unitarily still. Beth felt uneasy being so close to him, she knew he was one of them.

"She knows," he said glancing at Isabella.

"What?" Isabella asked him, confused.

"I know he's a vampire," Beth said cutting straight to the point.

"How?" Isabella asked.

"Doesn't matter. I'm going to stay with Billy, I don't want Julie around him. If Charlie asks we had a fight and I'm refusing to talk to you. Or just tell him your boyfriend is a vampire, either way is fine with me." Beth didn't wait for the shock to wear off Isabella's face. She went back downstairs to her room, quickly packing a bag for Julie and another one for herself with work clothes. She took as much as she could carry not sure when she could be able to come back.
