The Sister

Chapter 8

Elizabeth knocked on Billy's door, it felt strange to do so but she didn't just want to walk in unannounced. Billy opened the door a few moments later, a look of surprise on his face as he saw Beth and Juliet on his doorstep.

"Hey Bethie, what are you doing here?" Billy asked.

"Isabella and I had a fight. Is it okay if I stay here for a few days?" Beth asked stepping to the side so Billy could see Sam who stood next to Beth's truck. Billy looked at Sam, understanding there was more to the situation.

"Yeah, of course. Come in," he nodded to Sam. As soon as the girls were inside Sam disappeared into the trees. He would breathe easy now knowing they were safe. He could protect them here. Charlie stood to meet his daughter, forgetting about the final minutes of the game on tv.

"What happened?" He asked Beth taking the heavy looking bags from her. He carried them to the guest room and she followed after him.

"Isabella had a boy in her room, I said he should probably go home as it was getting late. Then she just went off at me. I'm not going to be talked to like that Dad." Beth knew she was lying but she didn't care.

"I'm sorry I'll have a talk to her and get things straightened out," Charlie said, setting the bags down on the bed. It was a small room, with a set of bunk beds on one wall that Billy's daughters use to share, and just enough room by the head of the bed to fit Julie's portable crib.

"Don't worry about it to much dad. I think it will be good for us to have some time apart, we're just too different," Beth said.

"Okay. She really shouldn't have had a boy in her room though, not while I'm not home." Charlie shook his head at the idea. He already had one grandchild, even though he loved her he definitely didn't want any more for a very long time. "Is there anything I can help with?" Charlie asked.

"No dad, you go back to the game. I'm going to find us something to eat, then go to bed. It's been a long day," Beth felt dead on her feet and was ready to crash.

"Okay honey, yell out if you need a hand," Charlie said before returning to the game. Beth went to the kitchen with Julie who had begun to get fussy. She was also hungry and tired and Beth couldn't blame her. Beth gave Julie a sippy cup of milk before making them some mac and cheese for dinner.

"Hey Beth. What are you two doing here?" Jacob asked wondering into the kitchen.

"I had a fight with Isabella and need some space from her," Beth said stirring the pot over the stove.

"It was quite without you here this weekend, glad to have you back." He smiled grabbing a glass of water.

"Thanks Jake." Beth smiled, glad to have such great people in her life.

"We can take Julie to daycare in the mornings if that makes things easier for you. As long as I get to drive your truck that is." Jacob smiled.

"That would be extremely helpful Jake." Beth said dishing up the food.

"No problem. Night Beth, Night little duck." Jake ruffled the little girls hair as he passed her. Beth took a seat at the table blowing on the mac and cheese before offering some to Julie. Charlie entered the kitchen a little while later as Beth was finishing the last of the food.

"Night Beth, I guess I'll see you around. If you want me to bring anything over for you just call. Or if you want me to pick Julie up just let me know." He hovered in the doorway scratching the back of his head. Beth stood going to give her dad a hug.

"Thanks dad, I love you," Beth whispered. She owed her life to Charlie, even if he wouldn't admit it. He had given her so much and supported her through every choice she had made. She didn't know who her blood father was but that didn't bother her, no way would he be half the man Charlie was.

"Love you too Bethie," he let her go and went to give Julie a kiss on the forehead, it was the only part of her face not covered in cheese sauce. "Be good Julie." He gave Beth a pat on the shoulder as he walked past her. She heard him say goodbye to Billy on his way out the door.

A few minutes later Billy rolled into the kitchen and started making himself a coffee. Beth washed the dishes and waited for him to speak.

"He told you didn't he?" Billy asked not looking away from the pot of water on the stove.

"Yeah," Beth nodded.

"It's a lot to take in," Billy said.

"I'm just wrapping my head around it all. Shifters, imprints, vampires," Beth laughed. She did that a lot when she was nervous.

"If I can help in any way just let me know," Billy said.

"Thanks Billy. Jake's already volunteered to take Julie to daycare of a morning, so if you could make sure he doesn't crash my truck and gets her there on time that would be great." Beth left the dishes out to dry and went to get Julie out of her chair.

"I guess I can do that." Billy smiled, he was glad she seemed to be taking the news in her stride. "Good night Beth," Billy said as Beth left the kitchen.

"Night Billy," she said heading to the bedroom. She grabbed a change of clothes for Julie and herself and went to the bathroom. Julie went straight to sleep once she was clean and in her crib. Beth had thought she would have also slept like a log but her mind wouldn't let her. She picked her phone up off the floor. She scrolled through the numbers until she found Sam's number. She added him to her contacts then sent him a quick text.

"How do werewolves eat lunch?" She stared at the phone for a few minutes waiting to see if he was on it or busy doing something else. A few dots appeared at the bottom of the screen and her pulse quickened as she waited for his response.

"On a plate?" He replied. She laughed to herself as she wrote out the rest of the joke.

"They wolf it down."

"I'm glad you're taking this with a good sense of humour." He replied after a moment. He had also laughed at her joke.

"Night wolf boy."

She went to sit the phone back on the ground but it vibrated to life. She read the message smiling down at her phone in the dark.

"Sweet dreams Lizzy."

She signed, putting the phone back on the ground and rolling over in bed. It still took a while for her to fall asleep but she was happy as she waiting for sleep to over come her. Trying to think of more wolf jokes eventually tired her brain out.

The next morning went quickly. Juliet woke Beth before the alarm could. She got herself and the young girl both dressed and ready for the day before making breakfast and packing lunches. The guys woke in time for breakfast and Beth hurried out the door before they had finished. She had walked to the diner a few times from the Blacks house but wasn't sure how long it would take her to get there in the rain. She still managed to be a few minutes early but was glad she had left early.

"Coffee?" Leah asked as Beth entered the back door.

"Oh yes please," Beth smiled.

"Did you walk here?" Leah asked her eyes giving Beth the once over as she stripped out of her rain coat and changed into a clean pair of shoes she had brought in her bag.

"Yeah Jake is taking Julie to daycare so he needs my truck," Beth said taking a cup of coffee from Leah.

"You're not staying at home?" Leah asked sipping her own cup of coffee.

"Need a break from Isabella," Beth said putting on her apron.

"Say no more. I forgot how annoying Seth could be. I can't wait to get my own place," Leah said. She had practically been living with Sam, now she was back in her parents house full time. Real estate was so limited on the reservation though someone had to pretty much die to find a place. The only places spare in town were way out of Leah's budget.

"Don't stress I'm sure something will come up soon. Or Seth will go off to college eventually," Beth laughed. Leah swotted at her arm.

"God I better be out of home by then." Leah laughed. "Well I guess it's time to open the doors of hell," Leah sighed setting her drink down and going to unlock the front doors. Beth nursed her drink for a few more minutes until customers started showing up. Most of the timber yard workers would stop in on their way to work in the morning. Then school kids and teachers would pass through a little while later. Mid mornings were hit or miss and then the rest of the day would drag on with tourists and locals. The day was especially busy compared to the week earlier. Leah signed off at three and Kim took over her shift.

Right on time Sam entered the Diner followed by Jared and for the first time Paul. Beth was busy with another customer when they arrived and their normal sitting area was full. Everyone had flocked to Beth's side of the diner today and she wasn't sure why. Beth gave Sam an apologetic smile nodding to the other end of the room. As soon as she had finished with her customers she went to Sam's table. Kim stood there pen to paper but not writing anything down.

"Is everything good here?" Beth asked looking at Kim then at Jared who seemed to both be stuck in the same trance. She had seen that trance before, she had been in it.

"Yeah we're good Lizzy," Sam grabbed her hand giving it a squeeze. She looked at him with a question in her eyes and he nodded his head.

"Don't take too long Kim , more people are about to sit in your section," Beth patted her on the shoulder get her out of the trance before getting back to her own customers.

"Sorry what was your order again?" Kim asked as her cheeks reddened.

"I didn't say anything yet," Jared smiled.

"I would like three burgers of the day, no fries," Paul said getting impatient. "Also two large cokes and a muffin." He handed her back the menu with a little more force then needed.

"Is that everything?" Kim stammered writing down the food as quickly as she could while grabbing the menu.

"That's just Paul's order. I'll take two burgers, make them extra hot, and fries," Sam smiled waiting for her to finish writing before handing her his menu.

"Okay. And for you?" She asked Jared her cheeks glowing red now she had to look at him again.

"What's your name?" Jared asked. Paul rolled his eyes.

"Kim, we take third period chemistry together," she said with a shy smile.

"I thought I recognised you from somewhere." It was a lie, Jared had no memory of her. He was sure she would have caught his attention it he had seen her before.

"I guess you haven't been to school for a while." Kim said.

"Yeah I have to get back to that, maybe we could have lunch sometime?" Jared smiled.

"Could you please flirt after we get our food, I'm starving here," Paul said loudly cutting in.

"Just double Paul's order," Jared was too dazed to really think about what he wanted.

"Okay," Kim nodded writing down some more notes on the order before scurrying over to the kitchen window. Beth was collecting another tables order from the window when Kim handed the new order over to the kitchen.

"They ordered eight burgers?" Kim said with wide eyes.

"Don't stress, they burn calories like mad, that will barely touch the sides." Beth smiled. She grabbed the tray of food taking it to the other end of the diner. She had hoped to get a few minutes to go check on the guys but her tables kept her busy. By the time she got a break their table was empty. She sighed getting on with the last of her shift.

Beth was dragging her feet as she left work, not feeling like the walk back to Billy's. It was only when she caught sight of Sam standing by the tree line that her mood changed. She walked over to him.

"You waiting for someone?" She asked raising an eyebrow.

"I didn't see your truck here so I was wondering if you wanted to walk together," he asked.

"I guess we could do that." Beth smiled.

"Come on I know a short cut," Sam said holding a hand out to her.

"Oh that sounds amazing," Beth said taking his outstretched hand. Her feet were killing her after such a busy morning. She was not looking forward to returning to work in only a couple hours. "So Kim and Jared?"

"Yeah apparently they are imprints. He's going back to school tomorrow to see her. I wasn't sure how I would ever get him back there," Sam laughed.

"That's good. At least he's going to school again. When will he tell her about the wolf thing?" Beth asked.

"That's up to him. Do you think she'll hit him with her car?" Sam joked.

"No," Beth said sounding quite sure of herself.

"Why are you so sure?" Sam asked.

"Because she doesn't have a car," Beth smiled.

"Smart ass." Sam shook his head. They reached the Black's house in record time. Beth was definitely taking that track more often.

"Thanks for the short cut," Beth smiled looking up at Sam.

"Any time," He said before pressing a quick kiss to her lips. "I'll call you tonight." He promised before jogging back into the woods. Beth felt like she was floating on air, a spring in her step as she walked up the front ramp. That spring instantly vanished as Jacob greeted her at the door, a not so pleased look on his face.

"I can't believe you're dating Sam Uley!" Jake yelled as Beth stepped into the house.

"Please Jacob let me explain," Beth said even though she had no explanation she could give him that didn't sound insane.

"Does Leah know?" He asked.

"Jake," Beth said in a warning tone.

"She doesn't does she?" He said turning his nose up at her.

"No she doesn't and unless it actually goes somewhere serous I would like to keep it that way."

"There has to be other guys in this town better then him. Come on Beth he's your friend's ex." Jacob couldn't understand why Beth would do something like that. She had never shown any interest in anyone and now to go after Sam Uley?

"Jake I'm hanging out with Sam not getting married to him. Please just let me see where things go for a bit." She held a hand up trying to calm him down.

"He's no good Beth. But if you want to waste your time with him then go for it. I can't stop you." Jake left out the back door going to his garage to work off some steam.

Author notes*** It's crazy to think less then a week ago this story was less then 4000 words long including all my notes and how it's over 19000 words. The next chapter is in shambles atm as I have a lot of little ideas for it but nothing is flowing yet. Im not expecting there to be a updated tomorrow but hopefully we are both surprised.
