The Sister

Chapter 11

Sam wondered down the stairs, still rubbing sleep from his eyes as they adjusted to the morning light. He woke to the smell of food cooking, drawing him to the kitchen. He wasn't disappointed by the sight that met him. Beth swayed around the kitchen, a peaceful smile on her lips. Her hair was a mess of curls. She wore a grey t-shirt that hung off one shoulder and a pair of black tights, a hole ripped above one knee. She looked the messiest Sam had ever seen her, and he loved it.

"Good morning," Sam said after watching her for a moment.

"Sorry if we woke you, she's an early bird," Beth smiled at Sam apologetically.

"What type of bird are you miss Julie, are you a swan?" He asked the small girl. Her highchair was pulled up to the kitchen counter. Her hair was in the same messy state as her mothers. She wiggled in her seat reaching out for Sam. He smiled picking the little girl out if her highchair, tossing her up into the air.

"I call her a goose, Jake calls her a duck," Beth elaborated. "You probably don't want to shake her to much, she just had milk. You'll end up wearing it."

"Okay back in the chair you go," Sam said gently placing Julie back in the highchair.

"I hope you don't mind that I've taken over your kitchen," Beth said poring a cup of coffee and sliding it over to Sam. He laughed.

"This is literally the best thing I've ever woken up to. So no, I don't mind one bit," Sam said ignoring the coffee. Sam walked around the bench wrapping an arm around Beth's waste he pulled her close. She looked up at him with smooth chocolate eyes, that twinkled in the morning light. They were eyes that could stop the whole world from spinning. Or at least that's how Sam felt about them. He captured her lips with his.

"Mama, egg," Julie said, hitting her hands against the highchair.

"Someone is hungry," Beth said pulling away from Sam.

"Can I help?" He asked, hovering in the kitchen.

"No. Sit down and drink your coffee before it gets cold." Beth shooed him away. Sam smiled. He picked up the highchair and made a rocket ship noise as he carried it over to the table. Juliet giggled at the noise smiling up at Sam.

"She has your eyes," Sam says grabbing his coffee and taking a seat at the table.

"Thank god." Beth breathed out quietly as she plated up food.

"Do you have anything to do with her father?" Sam asked, before taking a sip of his coffee. Beth visibly stiffened, almost dropping the pan she held.

"No. It was a one-night stand, I didn't even know his last name," Beth shrugged putting a plastic plate of scrambled eggs in front of Julie and an overloaded plate of breakfast items in front of Sam. "The mornings are lovely here," Beth said changing the topic. She grabbed her own plate and sat down next to Julie.

"Thank you, they are nice here," Sam said.

"You can't take credit for nature Sam," Beth said rolling her eyes.

"No, but I can take credit for putting in those glass doors so you can see nature," Sam said before digging into his food.

"It would have been nicer to have them at the back of the house. Seeing trees instead of trucks would be much better." Beth said, before taking a bight of her own food.

"Done," Sam nodded.

"I was joking Sam," Beth shook her head.

"I'm not, be prepared there will be glass doors on that wall before next weekend," Sam said, and Beth paused to stare at him for a moment not sure if he was telling the truth or joking.

"Sure there will be," she replied her eyes flicking to the back wall not believing him. Her eyes caught on the fireplace as she turned back. A worried crease showed on her forehead.

"You're mentally baby proofing that fireplace, aren't you?" Sam asked.

"Am I that easy to read?" Beth asked eyes turning back to him.

"After breakfast I'll duck to the hardware store, I have baby gates for the stairs and cabinet locks also to pick up. I was also thinking about getting some paint for the other room upstairs. We can paint it and turn that into Julie's room." Beth stopped her fork halfway to her mouth. She lowered it back to the plate, staring at Sam for a long moment before speaking.

"Sam you really don't have to do all that."

"You both deserve it, and so much more. I want you both to be happy and safe here," he said, wanting that more then anything in the world. Beth went quite, her face visibly dropping.

"How long will this wolf thing last?" She asked quietly.

"Billy says I'll be able to stop phasing eventually, once the cold ones leave the area for long enough." Sam replied.

"No. I mean the imprint." Beth studied his reaction.

"If you're asking how long I'll feel this way about you the answer is always. Forever. For as long as I breathe and then some." Sam hoped his words would get through her walls; he could see her mentally trying to build them back up. "Are you okay with that?"

"Forever is a long time. Let's get through this weekend first," Beth said picking her fork back up.

"Whatever makes you happy," Sam said. More to himself then anyone else. He leant back in his chair admiring the woman across from him. She was more beautiful than anything nature could make. He hoped she realised that.

Sam helped clean up after breakfast before leaving for the hardware store. Beth got Juliet cleaned up and changed into new clothes. She put Julie in the play pen before beginning the process of moving their things upstairs. Beth wasn't sure about bringing so much stuff to Sam's but after seeing that thing in her father's house she was glad she had. No way was she going back there any time soon.

Sam was gone longer than Beth had expected. She moved all their stuff upstairs, cleaned the floor and found herself tidying the kitchen cabinets when Sam finally arrived home. He stopped in the doorway looking at the empty spot on the floor where boxes had been.

"You've been busy," he commented.

"Yeah, I just piled them upstairs, so they were out of the way. I hope you don't mind I reorganised the cabinets a little," Beth said. Sam raised an eyebrow walking around the counter to see all the neatly organised shelves. The dishes were not only stacked in size order but also colours from darkest to lightest.

"Looks good to me," Sam smiled. He could really care less how the dishes were stacked but if this made her feel more comfortable great. She could put the toaster in the fridge for all he cared. As long as that calmed her nerves, he was happy to go along with anything. "I went past Charlie's and fixed the door. I got a mat to cover the marks in the floor, hopefully he doesn't move it."

"Thanks Sam," She opened her mouth to say more but shut it after a second thought.

"There was no sign of the red head, I don't believe she came back." Sam said.

"I swear you can read my mind," Beth laughed.

"Not quite," he pulled her closer, hugging her to his chest. She appreciated the contact and clung to him for a moment. "Come on, let's baby proof this place," Sam smiled pulling back.

The weekend ended to soon and Beth returned to work and Billy's house on Monday. Neither Beth nor Sam was happy about it. Even Julie was in a mood when Beth dropped her off at daycare. The little girl had screamed the place down leaving Beth frazzled for work. She felt zoned out, the clock on the wall felt frozen. The breakfast shift was quite and uneventful until Beth caught sight of Leah running into the bathroom. She followed, concerned.

"Hey Leah, are you okay?" Beth asked slipping into the rest room.

"Sorry I'll be out in a minute," Leah said before dry heaving into the toilet.

"Are you still sick?" Beth asked, she mentally slapped herself. Of course she was still sick she was throwing up. "Sorry stupid question. How did your appointment go on Friday?"

"Not great, seems like I'm stuck with this thing for a while," Leah sniffled. Beth grabbed some paper towel offering it to Leah under the bathroom door.

"Is it serious? How long did they say?" Beth asked. Worried for her friend.

"Around five more months, then eighteen years," Leah said taking the paper towel. "Thanks," she whispered.

"I'm sorry, you lost me," Beth said standing back up. Leah went silent for a moment, cleaning her face off and flushing the evidence. She stood fixing her uniform before exiting the stall. She washed her face in the sick, Beth watching her with concern.

"I'm pregnant," Leah said, staring at the water as it ran down the drain.

"You're… pregnant? No way," Beth said shock covering her face, eyes going wide as she realised what that meant.

"Yeah, I thought I was just gaining weight from the breakup but apparently it's because there is a big-headed baby in my uterine," Leah said drying her face.

"Have you told anyone?" Beth asked.

"No, I have no idea how I'm going to tell my parents. They are going to freak," Leah said eyes moving to Beth.

"And the dads…" Beth couldn't finish her sentence.

"Yeah, Sam. I tried calling him, but he won't answer me so I'm not sure how I'm meant to track him down. I went by his place as well and it's completely empty. The old lady next door said he moved out a week ago. I have no idea were too." Leah laughed dryly, no humour in the broken sound.

"Shit," Beth breathed out.

"Yeah," Leah nodded.

"You can leave early if you want. It's so quite today and you look like you could use the rest," Beth offered.

"Thanks Beth, but I kind of need the money now," Leah looked back at her reflection. "I just need a moment."

"Okay, take all the time you need. If you need anything just let me know." Beth said. She wanted to comfort Leah, but she also wanted to run to Sam and tell him the news. But it wasn't her news to tell, and she knew that. Beth was on edge for the rest of Leah's shift. Her nerves only slightly lessened as Leah signed out for her break. Beth's eyes snapped to the door every time the bell rang. As soon as she saw Sam's face, she dropped what she was doing.

"Hey Kim, can you watch my tables for a minute please," Beth said not waiting to hear her answer as she marched towards the opening door. "We need to talk. Outside, now." Beth grabbed Sam's arm pulling him back out the front door faster then he had walked in. Paul and Jared gave them odd looks but were not brave enough to follow. Their Alpha would have to handle his angry looking imprint alone.

"What's wrong? Are you okay?" Sam asked, surprised by Beth's unusual reaction to seeing him. She dragged him around the corner towards the back of the diner.

"You need to call Leah," Beth said stopping and spinning to look up at Sam.

"What?" They were the last words Sam had expected to hear her say.

"She has some very big news she has to tell you."

"What is it?" Sam asked very confused.

"I can't tell you. Please just call her," Beth said.

"Okay," Sam said but made no move. Beth sighed in annoyance letting go of Sam she stepped back from him.

"Call her now," Beth demanded. She felt like her insides were going to explode. She wasn't sure how Sam was going to react and part of her dreaded seeing it.

"Okay, okay I'm calling her right now," Sam said pulling his phone from his pocket. Beth watched as he found Leah's number and pressed call. She turned and went back inside her chest tight with emotion. Sam entered the diner a short time later, looking pail, his face sunken. He looked like he aged ten years with just one phone call. He dropped down in the booth and the other guys stopped their conversation looking at Sam with worry. Sam lifted his eyes catching Beth looking at him.

"It will be okay," she whispered. Hoping her words were true.

Sam had no idea how he was meant to proses the news Leah had given him. He had no idea what to expect when Beth told him to call her. It definitely wasn't the news he was going to be a father.

Authors Note***

So as you can see I did decide to go a different rout with Leah in this story. Not sure how it will go but I'm interested to see what comes of it. Really enjoying Sam I hope I am not making him to different from the original Sam I am trying to keep him the same. I do have another story in my writing graveyard that was meant to be a PaulxOC now thinking it would work well as a Sam x OC.
