The Sister
Chapter 16
"I should have told you I invited Leah over. I just didn't know how," Beth said, watching Sam from across the room. She hated the broken look that covered his face. It was her fault it was there.
"I'm not mad at you. I'm just, I'm just mad at this situation Elizabeth. I need to get some air," Sam said with a shake of his head. He left the house and Beth didn't try to stop him. She knew nothing she did at that moment would result in anything good.
Sam didn't return that night. Beth tried to stay awake to talk things over with him but after ten hours had passed it was clear he wasn't coming back while she was still awake. She flicked the lights off and went to sleep in his bed. She stressed over if she had done the right thing or not right up until she finally lost the fight with sleep. She woke the next morning to loud banging coming from downstairs. Beth wiped sleep from her eyes as she got out of bed and hurried downstairs.
"What are you doing?" She asked from the bottom of the stairs. Her eyes were still adjusting to the light in the room. She rubbed them again to be sure she was really seeing what was in front of her. Sam stood by the back wall of the living room, swinging an axe into the wall.
"Making room for the new door. Want a go?" Sam asked, holding the axe out to Beth.
"Hell yeah," she said, taking the axe and swinging it at the area Sam had been aiming for. She missed the wall all together, her next swing hit but didn't even chip it.
"Come on, put your back into it," Sam said with a smile, watching her put all her strength into a swing to get no results.
"We aren't all super strong wolves you know," Beth rolled her eyes. Sam smiled wrapping his arms around hers and helping her with the next swing. Beth let out a relieved sigh as his warmth wrapped around her. His strong arms did most of the axe swinging but she didn't care. Eventually there was a hand size whole in the wall and Sam lowered the axe.
"So how long is there going to be a hole in the wall?" Beth asked. Peaking through the hole.
"You will be looking out the new doors by the end of the day," Sam promised.
"Sure," Beth laughed with a roll of her eyes. "Was the axe really necessary?" She was sure there was a better tool for the job.
"No but it's not everyday you get to smash a hole in the wall. I'm sorry for raising my voice at you yesterday, you were only trying to help." Sam said. Beth looked back at him a soft smile on her lips.
"I should have told you," Beth admitted.
"And then I probably would have chickened out. You did the right thing." He pressed a kiss to the top of her head and Beth relaxed in his arms.
"She'll come around Sam." Beth promised.
"Thanks for staying," Sam said looking down into her dark brown eyes.
"I'm not bailing on you Sam," Beth said caressing his cheek.
…
Beth laid back on the couch admiring the new glass doors. They captured the outside world like a moving picture. The trees swayed with the wind and leaves drifted to the ground.
"You haven't moved far today," Sam said as he entered the house. Beth smiled sitting up to look at him. She had been their when he had left this morning as well.
"I have, thank you very much," Beth said as Sam dropped down onto the sofa next to her. He wrapped an arm around her pulling her into his lap.
"Where is Juliet?" Sam asked noticing the toddler was no where in sight. He knew it was still to early for her to be in bed.
"Dads looking after her for the night, so it's just the two of us," Beth smiled up at him.
"Will you be okay sleeping here without Julie? You said you haven't been apart from her before." Sam said some worry in his voice. She laughed, he was not getting her hint.
"Well, I wasn't planning on doing much sleeping," Beth said, before pressing a kiss to the edge of his lips.
"Really?" Sam asked with a raised eyebrow. They had not approached the topic of sex in their relationship. Even though they were sharing a bed now, Sam had put the idea out of his mind as much as he could.
"Really," Beth smiled nervously. She expected a more excited response.
"What about Embry?" Sam asked.
"Well, I didn't think we needed his approval," Beth said.
"You know what I mean," Sam said seriously.
"He's gone home, and will be warning the other two also to stay clear of this place for the night," Beth informed Sam.
"You think of everything," Sam smiled.
"It's not just a hat rack. So, are we starting with dinner or dessert?" Beth asked a nervous smile back on her lips.
"Dessert, definitely," Sam smiled pressing a passionate kiss to her lips. Beth wrapped her arms around his broad neck, pulling herself close to his chest. Sam stood up with Beth wrapped in his arms. She gasped and Sam took the opportunity to let his tongue explore her mouth. Beth lost all track of time and place until she was tossed onto the bed.
Sam hovered over her and pressed his warm lips to her neck before moving lower. His hand slipped under her shirt, sliding over the smooth skin of her stomach. Beth ran her fingers over his chiseled chest that was already shirtless. She had dreamt of touching his abs since the first time she had seen them. She wanted to enjoy this moment forever, but a heavy weight sat in her mind not letting her fully enjoy it.
"Sam, I need to tell you something first," Beth said, pulling her hands back with a shaky breath.
"Is everything okay?" Sam asked sitting back, removing his hands from her skin. The concern in her voice instantly had his guard up.
"You have to promise you won't freak out or get angry okay? I've come to terms with it and I don't want to go any further in our relationship without you knowing this as well," Beth couldn't meet his eyes as she spoke. She sat up, her eyes focused on the lamp by the bed.
"What is it?" Sam grabbed her hand, giving it a comforting squeeze.
"I haven't been with anyone for a long time. Only really my high school boyfriend when I was fifteen and then," Beth swallowed the lump in her throat.
"Juliet's dad?" Sam questioned.
"I went to a party in Arizona, I was drunk and two older guys from another school convinced me to follow them upstairs. They locked me in one of the bedrooms and took turns ummm. That's how I ended up pregnant," Beth let go of the breath she was holding onto. She had never said it out loud before and she wasn't sure how Sam would take the information. That night still haunted her sleep. She loved her daughter, but that night destroyed her life, it destroyed her.
"They raped you?" Sam said under his breath. Beth could feel the bed vibrate as Sam started shaking. He released her hand.
"Sam, you need to calm down, it's okay," Beth reached out to grab his hand back.
"That's not fucking okay Elizabeth, nothing about that is okay in anyway," Sam roared, standing up. All he could see was red. Someone hurt his imprint in ways no one deserves to be hurt. Sam stormed from the roomand downstairs. Elizabeth ran after him grabbing onto his arm as he opened the front door.
"Please Sam, it was a long time ago. You being angry over this won't change it. Please don't leave me," she cried. He was shaking so fast she could practically see two of him. It all happened too quickly for her to realise she was too close. He phased right in front of her, his claws slicing through the side of her face and shoulder in one clean swoop. A scream ripped from her as the pressure of the large wolf loomed over her and his hot breath burst down on her. There was also a hot sticky feeling running across her face and shoulder. It took her a moment to work out it was blood, her blood. She was in too much shock to feel the pain that would soon set in.
Sam recoiled moving away from her quickly. He backed out the front door and into the darkness. A gut-wrenching howl ripped from him as he ran away from her. Elizabeth felt cold laying there on the hard wood floor, a pool of blood growing around her. She touched her face only to pull her hand away covered in glossy red blood. She tried sitting up, but the pain was to much that she couldn't lift herself up. A face appeared above her. She had hoped to see Sam, to know he was okay, but it wasn't him. Paul pressed a rolled-up shirt to her shoulder wound as he yelled at Jared to get towels and call an ambulance.
"Hang in there Elizabeth, everything is going to be okay. Help is on the way," Paul promised.
"Sam," she whispered. "Is Sam, okay?" She felt hot tears stinging her eyes. Or maybe that was the blood, she wasn't sure.
"Don't worry about him right now. You're going to be okay. Jared where are those fucking towels man!" Paul yelled, the fear in his voice clear.
"Here. An ambulance is on the way. How are we going to explain this?" Jared asked.
"Call Billy, Harry as well." Paul pressed the towel to the side of her face. Elizabeth tried to pull away, but he held her as still as he could. "I know it hurts but we have to stop the bleeding. Elizabeth, Elizabeth!" Paul yelled as he watched her eyes droop shut. Jared tried to explain to Billy what had happened. Considering they only had Sam's messed up thoughts to go off, all they really knew was he phased too close to Elizabeth.
Time dragged out as they waited for the ambulance and watched as Elizabeth bled out in front of them.
…
Elizabeth tried to open her eyes, one stung and seemed only able to see black even when it felt wide open. The other eye was blinded by a bright light. She groaned and closed her eyes again. Pain surged through her side, and she had no idea what was going on.
"Beth?" Charlie's voice sent a wave of relief through her.
"Dad?" Beth asked, forcing her eyes open again. She still couldn't see anything with the left one but the right one adjusted better to the light then the first time. Charlie leant over her blocking some of the bright light. She looked around with her one working eye to find herself in a hospital bed.
"Thank god. Honey I was so worried," Charlie said holding onto her hand. Her eye moved back to her father's face. He had tears in his eyes, she couldn't remember the last time she had seen him cry.
"What happened?" She asked, her mind too foggy to remember how she had gotten there.
"You were attacked by a black bear last night; you lost a lot of blood. Doctor Cullen stitched you up, but the cuts were pretty deep. Your left side is fully bandage, but the bleeding has stopped so the doctor believes you are not at risk, but it will take a long time for them to heal properly." Charlie stared down at his daughter, relief flooding through him.
"Where's Julie? Sam?" Beth said more worried about them then herself. She would try and make sense of what Charlie said later.
"Julie is at the Clearwater's house. Sue is looking after her at the moment, she is okay. Sam hasn't come by. Billy said he would be part of the hunting party to look for the bear," Charlie said. Beth's mind was fuzzy, but she was sure there was no bear. The events of the weekend flicked through her mind right up to when Sam's wolf exploded from his skin. His claws ripping into her flesh. His heart broken cry. She was sure he would still be torturing himself over what he did. "I'm going to go get a nurse." Charlie said stepping away from her bedside. A deep sense of fear she hadn't felt in a long time wrapped itself around her. Elizabeth could cope with the pain, the wounds would heal, the scars would fade. She could forgive Sam for hurting her, she already had. But she knew the hard part would be getting him to forgive himself.
